Recomended External HD FW800 with power-off/sleep feature

Hi.
After "googling" some hours, I dont want to miss asking here before I spend more money, beacuse i could skip any model or so... Any recomendations (based on knowlage or experience) of brand/model to buy for an external HD with this kind of features:
- FireWire 800 port (does 800 give 400 compatibility?)
- supports 1Tb or some more
- power´s/off/on when I power-off/on my iMac, or if it sleeps.
-last, not so important but cool, could include some USB/firewire Hub feature too.
thanx
vcosta

I have to agree with the previous poster, the LaCie Quadra D2 are good drives. I have 3 (320, 500 & 750 GB) daisy chained together connected via FireWire 800 so far they are running fine. However others really like OWC Mercury series too. You can find those at:

Anyone had issues with on/off sleep button not working anymore?

If there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, use virtual Lock Button, tap Settings App > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Device > Lock Screen. This can even turn OFF iPhone. To turn ON, connect iPhone to power, charger or USB of computer.

  • Fans running with power off

I think my mini was killed recently by lighting, now if i plug my computer in the fans run at full speed, and when i boot it up it runs slow and eventually crashes.
after opening it up there is no sign of damage, i think it has gone in to a "panic mode" thinking that the processor is over heating or something.
Anyway, has anyone seen/had this happen to them? if so any ideas on how to fix this?

Fans at full speed is what happens when you do the PMU reset on an Intel mini - an incorrect procedure. If the mini had failed to start after an apparent power surge (like a lightning hit) and the PMU reset was attempted, it'd make matters worse. The proper procedure is the SMC reset. If the PMU reset was not attempted and there was an apparent power surge event, the brick or logic board may be damaged.

  • MacPro - External FW800 drives & auto power off

Hi, I have a new Mac Pro and am using two LaCie FW800 external drives with auto power off facility however when I power my Mac Pro down there is still power going to the FW800 ports as the drives down shut down. I am new to macs so is there any config setting to get round this issue?
    Cheers
    Paul

Don't believe there is but the power to the firewire port is a built in specification.
You could go to the Apple Developer site and look at their firewire SDK (there's many firewire applications, what they do I don't really know. Little too scarry for me.

  • Turn Off Sleep with Lid Closed

I am using my X60 with an external monitor (no docking station) and I would like to turn off the feature that puts the X60 to sleep when I close the lid.  Is there any way to turn off this feature?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

don't know what os you're on but in windows 7:  control panel, power options, on the left click choose what closing the lid does, then choose when i close the lid, you want to choose do nothing.  there's a setting for, on battery and one for, on power.

The screen shows problems with iCloud only choices are ignore or settings, however nothing I do will unlock it from this screen, cannot power off keeps that bubble on the screen. What do I do?

    Try this now.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • When waking from "sleep" screen turns grey under the pointer and the computer is effectively dead. Have to hold power 'off' for five seconds to regain computer.

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • My question is what if I have troubleshooted with holding the sleep/awake button and power and it's not changing to any other screen what should I do? It doesn't even show the battery strength wheither its completely dead or charging at all.

    - If you did not charge the iPod for a couple of hours before you did the reset then charege and reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then connect to your computer and if iTunes sees the iPod restore via iTunes.
    - Next see if recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod. For recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • HT201150 How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
    Thanks!

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button

One day i  was just flipping through my ipod i put it on sleep mode then next time i opened it without me doing anything it gave me an option of ''slide to power off'' i pressed cancel then  it automatically went back to sleep mode it is still happening my ipod is jailbroken and i didnt fiddle with the settings.. please help.

If it is jailbroken, we are not allowed to help you with that here.  You'll need to seek out other sources of help.  The jailbreaking could potentially be part of the problem, for all I know.
BTW, just a pointer...  punctuation is your friend!  Your post was very difficult to read without any.  Many people will simply stop reading and click the "back" button when encountering something like that, which limits availability of help to you.

  • Is there a way that when using airplay with power point the ATV does not sleep/screen saver frequently

s there a way that when using airplay with power point the ATV does not sleep/screen saver frequently???

I have done this for several Titles, using Photoshop and a Layer Mask, that gets "erased," revealing the letters. My Titles were of "handwriting with chalk" on a blackboard, so I could keep the edge of that Layer Mask, looking more like the "chalk." Photoshop also makes it easy to output Layer Comps for each "step" in the handwriting process. IIRC, I did about 5 Frames per Layer Comp on Import, but do not recall if I used an extremely short Cross-Dissolve Transition between those - I intened to do so, but just do not remember if I liked that, or went with just the Still Images? Will try to find that animation, and maybe create a full tutorial of the process. In my case, I also added an SFX of chalk on a chalkboard.
If you have Photoshop, it's really quite easy to pull off.
Now, I do not know if Photoshop Elements has Layer Masks yet, which make it so very easy to accomplish. One could do it backward, where the Text Layer gets Erased, and then one would have their full Image as the last in the sequence, and then the next would have a little bit of the Text removed, then a bit more, then a bit more - going backward, until the "writing surface" is clean. One could also do this with a Transparent Background, so that one saw the Video below, and no actual "writing surface" visible.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Waking up the Mac from a complete power OFF with WOL not possible, ***

I was told by AU applecare stuff that ALL Mac cannot be woke up from a complete power OFF. I asked the team at applecare because my mini server won't do a WOL.
    Is this for REAL?
Can't I do WOL on Macs?
What a horror! How is this possible  in this day and age? Macs are intel macs now, and it is just a matter of the network card/chip has this build in. A $200 PC can do this ages ago.
It is huge environmental disaster if we cannot wake the Macs from power off remotely via LAN/WAN, and putting them to sleep when not needed.
Can someone help brighten up my day by pointing me to some official documentation on this or you real experiences on waking up a Mac with WOL
    from a complete power OFF?

Maybe necroposting here, but HRMUser is right. Many (most?) modern PCs support WOL from a powered-off (shutdown) state. PCs that support WOL usually have a BIOS setting that allows you to enable/disable it. The network interface itself is powered enough that it will "see" magic WOL packets. I regularly use this feature for PC administration. It's annoying / silly that Macs don't support WOL from power off.

  • Sleep or power off for traveling?

Is it ok to transport the MBP (in the back-bag) while it is in the sleeping mode? or should I turn it off totally before transport? Please let me know, thanks

    Hi Tom71,
The MacBookPro actually has various possible sleep modes, but the default is one which both saves a 'sleep image" to disk (in case of a battery running out, etc - hence the slow "going to sleep" process, and maintains the contents of RAM - hence the fast wakeup unless the sleep image has to be accessed, but the continuing current drain).
Maintaining the contents of RAM necessarily uses power.
You can change the sleep mode using terminal if you wish, but a useful little utility called "SmartSleep" makes this easier.
    Your choices are essentially:
    1) the default (discussed above) - slow to sleep, fast to wake, with power maintained to RAM.
    2) "sleep only" mode - in which power is maintained to the RAM, but no sleep image is written - fast both in going to sleep and waking up but less secure than the other options and still uses your battery.
    3) "hibernation" mode only - doesn't maintain power to RAM, but writes the disk image - slow to sleep and slow to wake, but it substantially reduces power consumption while sleeping over any extended period and is safe if your battery runs out anyway.
(there are two additional modes which are relevant if you are using "secure virtual memory")
If you want to use Terminal commands to make the changes see http://www.macworld.com/article/53471/2006/10/sleepmode.html
There is also a Widget available called "Deep Sleep" - http://www.axoniclabs.com/DeepSleep/ that will "hibernate" your Mac if you wish.
    Cheers

  • When my intel based desktop goes to sleep I have to shutdown to restart or turn power off and on to restart

After downloading OS X my desktop will not restart when clicking the mouse after it goes to sleep.  I have to either unplug and plug it back in or hold the power switch down until it shuts down completely and then restart.  Other then that, everything is fine.

I think I have resolved my problem by uninstalling my cell phone software : Sony Ericsson PC Companion 2.0  I found that this program was interfering with windows when I wanted to turn off my computer and stopped shut down.  It interfered more after two recent upgrades.  I don't think Sony Ericsson has very good programer, because the more they upgrade the program the more it conflicted with Windows 7 64 bit OS  I had this program on my system for a long time before the problem arose.  I uninstalled the program and noticed my system ran better.  It shut down without forcing any program to end.  Since there was such a dramatic change in how the system worked, I tried to reset my computer to go to sleep and not shut it down.  It works a designed and no longer loses power while sleeping.  I didn't think an installed program could affect this feature but apparently it can.
