Recomended PowerBook protection products?

Just ordered my first Mac last week: a 15" PowerBook. I plan on treating this like my baby and want to give it all the protection it needs to last and stay healthy & clean. I'd love to get any advice, experience, and recommendations you can share with me in that regard.
Here are some of the specific types of protection I've been looking at, but I'd value any other suggestions, too:
Cable lock: From what I've read, it is best to go with a combo lock because the key locks are easy to pick. But a lot of the best rated combo locks I've found are so thick, they look like they'd interfere with the nearby power jack on the PowerBook. In fact, the people at PC Guardian admitted as much to me about their product. Does anyone have a PowerBook with a combo lock that fits that they would recommend?
Keyboard protection: I am especially interested in this type of product as I will be doing a lot of work in a restaurant environment (and probably the occasional coffee house) and I deeply fear having something spill on that beuatiful backlit keyboard. The only product I've found is the iSkin (below), but users at the Apple store have scared me away from it with some of their reviews (especially reports that it marks the screen... granted I could just remove it when closing). Can anyone give me advice on this?
http://www.iskin.com/protouch_PB1.html
Screen protection: I use screen protectors religiously on my Treo and my digital camera and they work great. So I'm thinking I can get the same benefits from a similar protector for my PB. Of course, the Treo & camera do not have very high resolution screens, so I'm inclined to wonder if such a film would be more noticable on the high-res PB screen? Is this recommended by any users? Any advice on this or similar products?

Screen/keyboard/wrist-rest protection: I have read a lot about the wrist rest getting dirty and fingerprints transferring to the screen from the keyboard when the PB is closed. These must be an issue to some degree, as I've found more than one product addressing this (examples below). Is this hightly recomended? Any advice on this or similar products?

Port protection: This seems like a good idea in general, especially in the aforementioned restaurant environment. Any experience or comments you have on this product?

Cooling products: Much is made about keeping laptops of both the PC & Mac variety cool. I've had PC laptops issued to me by employers before and never had a cooling problem; but I've been given the impression that a Mac PB runs hotter (is that even true?). I will be using the PB daily, often for hours at a time. Any recomendations or thoughts about cooling products like these?

A big thanks to all who respond.
(if you noticed it... plz forgive X-post)

I have a Kensington combo lock which works just fine although on my 15' PB the lock slot is on the right hand side at the front, I dont know if it is different on the newer models. I also fitted a radtech(???) protector sheet that goes between the keyboard and the screen when the lid is shut, this seems to stop screen marking, also cleaning the case/screen often with IKlear or similar seems to build up a protection layer and stop marking, and a company called matias do nice hard briefcase style cases which esp in my case seem to put up with a lot of abuse!!
Hope this helps

No differeence...it's just increase the work you have to do in SLD...but the important thing here is when you move the tranports of the SLD BS from DEV to Production you have to maintin the same name as you have maintained in the trnsport targets in the DEV......your ID tranport to Production is dependedn on what is the BS name you are mentinog of production in the transports targets.

I don't have a ready answer for the faxing. but suggest first doing the free upgrade to OS10.4.11, which is the last version. Perhaps that fixed it. Software Update should do it.

  • Problem Uninstalling McAfee Family Protection now ...

I tried to uninstall home protection but must have hit an error at some point,  a message did appear but I was unable to read it as lthe system restarted.  Now I get message saying:
" Fatal error! Cannot load language mapping DLL. Please reinstall filtering application"
I can't access the internet to reinstall Home Protection as I can no longer get a connection due to this problem I assume, I tried to restore back to a date prior to home protection being installed but there was no restore point back as far a that.  Hope someone can help soon!
    thanks

The "incompatible Internet Content filter" message is very revealing.
It is probably the case that you have at least one more protection product installed. This may be , say, an original product installed when you acquired the laptop or something that you loaded in the interim.
Use you windows uninstaller to review all the software products present on your device. You may find something like a Symantec/Norton trial package or any number of protection packages from AVG to Kasperslky through Ad-aware and many others.
Be robust- uninstall anything that looks remotely protective including any older MS products. If you find anything that will not uninstall via the windows uninstaller - post the details here and we will find a mechanism to achieve the required result (eg Symantec also has an MRPC.exe equivalent).
Given that we now know you have PC that is in full working order you could also download a complete version of your preferred MS Internet Explorer and install that full version on to the laptop. Alternatively chose another web browser, Chrome, Safari, Firefox and the rest all are all satisfactory performers.
    Keep us up to date.

  • McAfee Endpoint Protection for MAC v1.2 and NAC

Has anyone been able to check for and enforce compliance using NAC for MAC OS X systems running this McAfee endpoint protection product?
    Thanks in advance!!
    David

The newest product from OPSWAT, GEARS, allows you to perform endpoint compliance checks on Mac devices, as well as provides the administrator the option to detect advanced threats on the endpoints. It integrates easily in the Cisco ASA and ISE devices to provide the compliance checks on an ongoing basis.
You can read more about the integration/configuration steps in the attached document.

  • Recommendation for protection of a LabVIEW built application

    Hi all
I was hoping that someone out there could give me some advice on protecting a LabVIEW built application (the application runs on an operator interface for TestStand and call LabVIEW written modules).
Any advice on what products work best with TestStand and LabVIEW written applications?
Would you recommend a hardware or software implementation? (the application is a specialized application and realistically will be sold to a reasonably small number of vendors, should this influence our chose of SW v HW protection implementation.?)
Do NI provide any software protection products or will we need to work with a 3rd party’s implementation?
This area is somewhere I have very little experience in so any advice that you could provide would be much appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks a lot for you response. It looks like we will go for the Sentinel Superpro keys option for protection. I have added another post outlining in more detail my specific application, if you have a chance could you have a quick look (its under labVIEW general titled "software pretection"). In you experiance do you think the Sentinel Superpro keys would work well in our case. Any futher input will help our confidence in forking out the cash for the Sentinel Superpro development kit.

  • Screen Protection

now that the protection products have been out for a little while, what is a good product to prevent the screen from scratching? basically, i don't care if there is a case covering the whole iPod's surface, i just care about keeping the screen as scratchless as possible. so, if you know of a good product that you have actually tried out for yourself, tell me about it. thanks

Hey guys, I've ordered my Agent 18 case 2 weeks ago and it still isn't here. I live on the USA East coast. How long did it take your cases to ship? I'm too scared to touch my 'pod without a case... ooooo I hate the Christmas rush... lol.

  • Macbook palmrest/touchpad protection from polished effect, any idea?

My mb was purchased last December. No discoloration sign found so far as I always keep hands clean before touch it, however, there are spots where I rest my palms turning to shinny look slowly(including some key caps). I know it's common for all plastic cover as a natural worn out but I do wish keep my mb like new for years. Just thinking about applying a palmrest protector on the cover. Marware is one option only with two cons: the big logo and the missing protection for the touch pad besides less availability in my country. Palmrest protection product on the net just looks fine. Any mb fans have better ideas? Please advice.

    Hi Bruce,
For track pad you can use this:

  • Using Power Adapter with surge suppressor

I have been experiencing a new issue with my new Powerbook: I have been connecting my Powerbook G4 to a APC laptop surge supressor that I recently purchased. Now several weeks later I am noting that some time after I start up the computer that the light on the connector at the computer has gone out and unknowingly the computer has been running on battery instead of AC power (I am more observant now). Today I connected the power adapter directly into the AC outlet and thus far everything is going fine = light is green on the AC adapter connector. Is a surge protector necessary or desireable with the Apple AC connector. I am suspicious that the surge suppressor is very sensitive to power line "noise" and essentially shuts the power off to the computer. I thought others may have experienced the same as I have or be interested in this type of problem.

I think that your serge protector is faulty. I, like the other responce, recomend the belkin products for portable computing.
The use of a power protection device is recomended for all electronic devices. I have been using a serge protector with all my computers (desktop and laptop) for a very long time. I had a protable serge protector that did the same thing a few years ago and found that is was faulty and the company repaced it free of charge. If you have not had the serge protector for very long you should be able to return it to the store that you bought it from for an exchange. If you have had it for a while then contact APC and use the warienty.

  • What is the recommended virus software for my apple laptop?

What is the recomended virus protection software for my apple laptop?

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email.  If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgement, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Ipod Classic will no longer connect to car deck's usb

I updated my ipod in itunes and now my car's usb deck will not recognize the ipod. It had been working for years without a problem. I emailed kenwood and they said apple pushed out an update that is causing compatibility issues with car decks. They suggested a "soft reset" which did nothing. Kenwood told me to contact Apple and Apple wants me to pay for support. Guess I'll surf around this forum till I find a way to revert back to an older version of the ipod software.
    Here's the thread from kenwood:
Thank you for contacting Kenwood USA Corporation. We value you as a Kenwood customer and appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance.
I understand you are having an issue with playing back your Ipod. If you recently updated your Ipod to the newer iOS4 software version we recommend attempting to soft reset the Ipod and attempt reconnecting to your head unit. The available updates from Apple have caused some issues with connectivity. For information on resetting your Ipod we recommend visiting www.apple.com.

Read this Apple Support Article on Restoring iPod.
    It is on step 6.
Restore would reformat your iPod Hardisk, if it is still in good condition, but some iPod Hardisk may be damage, due to abuse and misuse, so the Restore would fail.
For a successful Restore, I would also suggest that
    Disconnect all other USB devices
    Use the USB2.0 port
Do not use any USB Hub.

  • Static NAT to two servers using same port

I have a small office network with a single public IP address. Currently we have a static nat for port 443 for the VPN. We just received new software that requires the server the software is on to be listening on port 443 across the internet. Thus, essentially I need to do natting (port forwarding) using port 443 to two different servers.
I believe that the usual way to accomplish this would be to have the second natting use a different public facing port, natted to 443 on the inside of the network (like using port 80 and 8080 for http). But, if the software company says that it must use port 443, is there any other way to go about this? If, for example, I know the IP address that the remote server will be connecting to our local server on, is there any way to add the source IP address into the rule? Could it work like, any port 443 traffic also from x.x.x.x, forward to local machine 192.168.0.2. Forward all other port 443 traffic not from x.x.x.x to 192.168.0.3.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Mike

    Hi,
Using the same public/mapped port on software levels 8.2 and below would be impossible. Only one rule could apply. I think the Cisco FWSM accepts the second command while the ASA to my understanding simply rejects the second "static" statement with ERROR messages.
On the software levels 8.3 and above you have a chance to build a rule for the same public/mapped port WHEN you know where the connections to the other overlapping public/mapped port is coming from. This usually is not the case for public services but in your situation I gather you know the source address where connections to this server are going to come from?
I have not used this in production and would not wish to do so. I have only done a simple test in the past for a CSC user. I tested mapping port TCP/5900 for VNC twice while defining the source addresses the connections would be coming from in the "nat" configuration (8.4 software) and it seemed to work. I am not all that certain is this a stable solution. I would imagine it could not be recomended for a production environment setup.
    But nevertheless its a possibility.
So you would need the newer software on your firewall but I am not sure what devce you are using and what software its using.
