Recommend a book on Illustrator....

I know there are zillions of online tutorials, but I like to have a hard copy book for learning software. I tend to look online to solve specific problems or needs I may have at a given time, but reading through a book I learn things more organically. Besides, I like to be able to look at a page.
To give you an idea what I'm looking for:
I've been using Illustrator off and on for a few years, and increasingly so over the past year, but I still come across pretty basic stuff that I don't know. So I'm somewhere between absolute beginner and intermediate, but I can use something pretty foundational.
Additionally, I'm still using CS3, so although I will likely upgrade at some point, I don't want a resource that spends half its time on CS5 features. It's much more important for me to get help learning and mastering the more legacy tools.
I know I could buy a zillion books, but don't have that kind of time or money, so want to focus on one or two that would meet my needs.
Some of the books I've looked at on Amazon that seemed interesting for my purposes are below:
CS4 Bible by Alspach: http://www.amazon.com/Illustrator-CS4-Bible-Ted-Alspach/dp/0470345195/
Adobe Illustrator CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques by Karlins: http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Illustrator-CS4-How-Tos-Techniques/dp/0321562909
Illustrator CS5 Digital Classroom by Smith et al: http://www.amazon.com/Illustrator-Digital-Classroom-Video-Training/dp/0470607831
Illustrator CS5 Visual QuickStart Guide by Weinmann and Lourekas: http://www.amazon.com/Illustrator-CS5-Windows-Macintosh-QuickStart/dp/0321706617
Real World Adobe Illustrator CS5 by Golding: http://www.amazon.com/Real-World-Adobe-Illustrator-CS5/dp/0321713060
Adobe Illustrator CS5 On Demand by Johnson: http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Illustrator-Demand-Steve-Johnson/dp/0789744457/
Of the above, I'm leaning most toward the Visual QuickStart Guide (a series I've used with profit before) and Real World (the description and reviews sound promising) but would like others to weigh in.
This book also sounds like something I could use, but hesitate to get it unless I can find one Illustrator-centric book that pretty much meets my needs by itself:
Vector Basic Training by Glistschka: http://www.amazon.com/Vector-Basic-Training-Systematic-Precision/dp/0321749596/
Any thoughts from experience would be much appreciated.

I only know one of the books mentioned above, which is the Real World one. I can very much recommend it, because it teaches the basic principles of Illustrator, but I can't compare it to the other ones.
As for the versions: I wouldn't recommend using a CS5 book to learn CS3. Too much has changed. It's not only functions that have been added, but stuff like the meaning of the ALT key in the pathfinder panel. If you can live with getting confused from time to time, OK...

  • How do I add Pantone Color Books to Illustrator CC?

I'm used to using the Pantone Process color book in illustrator, but it's missing from my Illustrator CC. How can I add it? I had it at work, so I assume it is a standard color book, because my work never paid for anything extra. I see I have a Pantone+ CMYK Coated color book, but the names of the swatches are different from Pantone Solid to Process color book I'm used to.

oh. then you are requesting for the old pantone books?
    here you go

let me know when you've got it because i'd like to delete it.

There are many factors that enter into the buying decsion. You have not specified the purpose, intent, budget or usage characteristics needed to make an informed judgement.
    Factors include:
    Budget
    Software that will be used
    Need for Ethernet
Need for additonal ports (i.e. extra thunderbolt or HDMI)
Need for built in optical drive
    Portability requirements/preference
    Disk space requirements

    Resolution preference

Ask in the AI forum. Certain Pantone colors have changed over the years and this may be such a case where it appears under a different number...

  • Recommendations for Book on Learning Java on Mac OS X Tiger?

Can anyone recommend a book title or two on Learning Java on Mac OS X Tiger? A generic learn-java-book is fine -- it just has to not be Windows-only. ie. the examples or included CD should at least include instructions for running the examples on a JAVA IDE available for other platforms such as Mac OS X (e.g. Eclipse).
    Thanks in advance,

  • Recommendation for Book To Learn Photoshop CS3

I have had Photoshop CS3 for a while now and I still feel like a beginner. Can you recommend a book that would teach me how to edit photos to improve lighting etc. I don't like learning from video programs because you can't look back to revise techniques easily enough. The trouble is I don't use PS often enough to get very good at it so I need to be able to refer to instructions easily. I don't need a complete beginner book but I do need something that isn't full of technical jargon. Can you recommend anything?

Quite a few people recommend the classroom in a book series from Adobe. A search on Amazon will provide you with a whole slew of books to choose from. If you scroll the page down far enough you will see comments left by people on their thoughts of the books. Even though you search on Amazon does not mean you have to purchase from them.
Problem with books is trying to read and do at the same time while keeping your page. I really recommend videos since it is so simple to just drag the timeline back to the point you were stuck at.

  • Recommended GUI books?

Hi folks, I'm looking for some recommendations on books and articles for coding GUIs.
    Two things I'm focusing on:
    1. 'Industry standards' for layouts, button names, and expected behavior in a GUI (eg, how should forms resize, is there an expected difference between OK/Close/Apply, etc - the little things that add up for the user).
    2. I want to build a network map type pane, but I'm not sure how to go about managing the layout.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • CMYK breaks different in Pantone books to Illustrator swatch conversion

Why are CMYK breaks specified differently in Pantone books as to when you convert the same spot colour to CMYK in Illustrator swatch options?
More importantly, which one is correct?

Patone decided to use LAB formulas in CS6.  So, if you call up a specific Pantone number and then convert to CMYK in Illustrator you get different CMYK percentages than what is or has been communicated in their swatch books.  I recommend bypassing converting, instead just build your own CMYK swatch based on the swatchbook.  This would be just to comply with your pre-existing workflow.  But, it means creating 2 files, one Spot, one CMYK for whatever is appropriate for your situation.  Obviously the Spot file goes to the print vendor, the CMYK file you build stays with you for proofing.  Sidenote:  I have seen some screen shots of users who had previous CMYK files next to a newer LAB>CMYK version and, on screen, the color "looks" closer to their ( Pantone's ) swatch book samples.  But users are reporting the files print much darker than before and no longer match Pantone's swatch books.  Go figure.

  • Color Books in Illustrator CS6 (Creative Cloud)

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and I am using Creative Cloud to download my programs. I have downloaded Illustrator CS6, and I am trying to replace the new Pantone + color books with the older versions. I have done this in the past on Windows with no issues.
On my Mac I can not find the new document profiles folder so I can change the spot color. I go into the Adobe folder and there is no Illustrator folder in there. Does anyone know where it would be, or why it is not in there?
Mac OS: [user]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6/[lang]/New Document Profiles
Also open to any other workarounds for getting the old color books. I need all of the old color books, not just a few swatches, so workaround 2 in this document below will not help me.
    Document I have been using - http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/pantone-plus.html
Thanks in Advance! Hopefully someone will have a solution for me :-(

The path for the New Document Profiles should be Mac HD/Users/<yourname>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CSX/en_US/ which is a hidden folder in OS10.7 and later. Do a Google search for how to access this folder. The Pantone color books go in Mac HD/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CSX/Presets/Swatches/Color Books.

  • Recommended tool for technical illustrations to be embedded in FrameMaker document?

I'm new to Framemaker and don't know, if this is the right tool for me.
I have written a technical document of about 500 pages using MS-Word. Now I want to figure out, if FrameMaker would be a good alternative. I think it could be.
But one of my needs is to be able to create technical illustrations (diagrams with shapes with text and arrows, lines and arrows linked to the shapes when repositioned).
In my opinion the capabilities of FrameMaker to create such illustrations are very limited.
Currently I create the illustrations using MS-Word-2010. I think concerning illustrations MS-Word is more capable than FrameMaker.
On the other hand the capabilities of Adobe Illustrator are plenty too much for me.
Can you recommend some external tool for creating illustrations, which can be easily integrated into a FrameMaker document?
    Regards,
    Martin

Import the ai file directly into the FrameMaker doc.
Select where you want the illustration to be located (use the smart select tool and click on the area in your text flow)
    File>Import>File
If you want to have the illustration in the document to automatically update when the drawing changes, select Import By Reference.
Once imported you have the option of positioning where you want it to be located relative to the text.
Right click the anchored frame, select Anchored Frame
Select the Anchoring Position, Alignment, etc.
Adobe Illustrator is all you need to create quality Technical Illustrations.

  • Can anyone recommend e-book reader app for mac os10.8.5

    Hi
Im trying to find an app to use for e-books from public library and other free e-book resources. I am not ready to update to Mavericks which uses ibook app because I am waiting for some of the glitches ie printing, accessibility - dragon dicitate and all the  problems reported by the support community discussions.
Personally I am not happy with ios 7 changes and I am reluctant to upgrade mac notebook and desktop. So I am being very cautious to make mac os changes especially when my printer being older model may or may not work and reports of dragon dictate, ms office and all the programs that are costly to replace.
I have vision problems and he ability to read an e-book both on and off line on a large screen would open a world of possibilies. While I like audiobooks nothing replaces seeing the words on a page and reading them to myself !
So when recommending an app please let me know how well it can increase font size, differentiate colors, and bookmark pages.
The ease of scolling and pagination in an e-book is important with my handicap.
I am financially unable to invest in purchasing apps that are more then $5.00 nor am I am to buy an e-reader like an ipad or other brands.
I know I could use a pdf app but the page flow of a pdf file is not visually appealing. I also find it hard to find where I left off reading.
Thank you in advance for your help

Thanks very much. That fixed the problem.
