Recommend a PCIe SATA RAID5 card?

Hi all
Ive been planning on putting an Areca ARC-1220 into my master2Far for a while now but decided to check this forum just in case.
And its a good job i checked too as others seems to be having problems with these two working together.
What I want to know is whether anyone can recommend a PCIe (either x4 or x8) SATA RAID card that plays well with a master2Far ?
I really need RAID5......

  • Pcie sata III card

I have replaced the airport card of my mid 2010 iMac with a pcie sata III card which works fine (I can even boot from it) but it takes 3 minutes now for the screen to come up and start the OS.
I believe it is some sort of hardware initialization/negotiation that takes that time. Or maybe the system keeps ckeing for the airport card.
Anyone got anmy idea how to solve this? Thank you in anticipation!

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately that time (which seems to be almost 4 minutes) is simply missing form the system log (see below).

  • PCI SATA III card on 2006 MacPro

I'd like to instal a SATA III SSD on my macpro to use it as scratch disk for photoshop and other software.
To be able to use all the speed of the ssd I wont to instal a pci sata III card... but I don't know if there are cards compatible with my 2006 macpro
    Could you help my?
    Thanks
    Daniele

Yes, if your SSD is new SATA3 6G, and also, to not have to share, to off load, the scratch to PCIe
Mac Pro is very limited in just how much I/O bandwidth there is even with 4 internal SATA ports it is less than 1Gb, less than even 250MB/sec per port in real world.
Ideal is to max out RAM to 24GB first or instead, then dedicated scratch disk or array.
    Much much more:

  • SIIG PCI SATA MAC CARD in Tiger

Guys, I need a cheap external sata solution for my PM G5 1.6
I found " OWC Mercury Elite Pro -AL Dual SATA Drive Enclosure" for 80 usd, and "SIIG PCI SATA MAC CARD" for 40usd.However, I heard people saying that siig pci sata-mac hangs under Tiger. Is it true?

I have also read of problems from some with the dual drive enclosure, which is less than even their dual FW800.
I did see this eSATA enclosure $69.
I would stick with either Sonnet 2-ch or FirmTek/SeriTek.

  • What's a good SATA RAID5 Card?

Looking to buy an SATA card for RAID5. Which one is good.

Look here: http://www.tweakers.net/reviews/557/21. Good luck buddy. Raid cards are a pain in the butt. You really need a PCI-x slot if you want performance from them and you need a server mobo, and they are all dated mobos, to get a PCI-x slot.

  • PCIe SATA II card for San Digital RAID tower

I have a San Digital 5 bay RAID tower that I want to use with my Mac Pro.  I used this tower previously with a G5 with very good results.  The tower came with a PCI card that is too long to fit in the PCIe slots in my Mac Pro 3.1 (it fit in the older G5 despite being told it would not work in a Mac, it worked fine with 10.4 and 10.5)
I need to find a card to run it now.
I attempted to run it off the unused SATA slot on the motherboard but did not recognize it in disk utility or system profiler.  Just out of curiousty, is there anything I can use the two unsed SATA spots for?
    Thanks for the help.

I attempted to run it off the unused SATA slot on the motherboard but did not recognize it in disk utility or system profiler.
Users who connected Drives directly to these ports have reported no difficulties under Mac OS X. Windows use requires additional configuration steps to alert Windows BIOS to use them as AHCI ports.
OWC sells a US$20 kit with cables, and one cable is a 90-degree cable because space at the motherboard is so tight.

  • Mac Pro Boot from PCIe SATA Card

Is it possible to boot a Mac Pro from a PCIe Sata adapter? I bought a PCIe SATA III card to connect to my 64 Gb C300 SSD Drive.  The internal SATA II drives are not fast enough to take full advantage of the C300.

Old Thread But Great News for MAc and PC Laptop Owners I know and trust this company and just bought this for my MAc Pro it boots up the hard drive a couple ways.  In Mac hold down the option key and or once in MAc OS tell it to startup disk the external Sata (eSATA)
Worked 100% on my Mac Pro 2008 and this works on Laptops Mac and Windows
One catch its expensive but can go up to 6G WOOOOOOOOWs
Only card out of  TON I have tried that will boot at least MAc OSX dunno about windows/Boot Camp but I think theoretically it will with the "Option" key wait and be patient and once you choose the sata drive maybe you can boot boot camp dunno?   Actually yes you can once you set the startup disk to the esata boot camp windows will boot!!!   Wooooooooot

  • Someone please suggest bootable SATA-II card

    Hello,
To whom it may concern, I have a Power Mac G5 Quad with 10GB memory and SATA capability. I am fully aware that the G5 Quads natively can only support 1.5GB/sec type drives, however I am in search of a not too expensive PCIe SATA-II card which will allow me to hook up 3.0GB/sec drives to it. I was also told that there is a substantial difference in speed between 1.5 and 3.0. Of course, coming from a G4 Dual 1.25 which used PATA, 1.5 is enough of a difference.
However, I would like to get a nice SATA-II card which support booting into OS X. I have a 640GB green Western Digital SATA-II drive on order, but for me to take advantage of 3.0 speed, I need a nice bootable, SATA-II PCIe card.
Can someone please recommend one for me? Also, will the G5 accept SAS drives?

    Hi Nadav,
This and, ideally this, should do it. But it only works on a few mac pros if your heading that way.

There are larger Firmtek cases if thats your need.
Edit, not sure if any G5 or Mac Pro can supply that speed.

  • PCI SATA disk causes GRUB to fail "loading Stage2..."

    Hi,
I'm setting up a small home server using an old PC.  The motherboard is an Aopen MX46U2-GN.  It has a 40GB IDE HDD and an IDE CD-ROM drive.
I have bought a new 1TB SATA HDD for data storage, and a PCI SATA adapter card because this motherboard has no SATA ports.  All of the hardware is working, except it is causing a strange boot problem.
I have a working Arch installation on the IDE drive.  I can boot to this, or to the Arch liveCD or install CDROM in the optical drive.
However, if I power up the system with the SATA drive connected to the PCI card, it detects everything but hangs with the message "GRUB loading stage2...."
Powering up without the SATA drive connected is fine - I can then hotplug the SATA drive into the PCI card and it is detected as /dev/sdb.  However, unplugging and replugging the drive every time the machine is rebooted is impractical.
I believe from Googling that it is related to the order in which the various drives are detected (hd0,0 etc.) and the new PCI card being detected before the IDE devices??
Question:  How do I fix the GRUB installation so I can boot the machine with the SATA drive connected?
    Thanks in advance

    Hmm... thanks for the advice.
I think you are correct that the new disk is recognised first and therefore becomes sda for Linux and hd0 for grub.
Therefore, I changed the Grub menu.lst entries to hd1,0 etc. (from hd0,0).  Booted from CD, chrooted into the partition and reinstalled grub.
    Unfortunately it still doesn't work.
Strangely, when the new SATA disk is connected, I can't even boot from the CD-ROM!    I get as far as
    Boot from CD : Loading stage2 ....
    before the system hangs.
Again, if I hotplug the SATA disk after booting from either the CD or the old HDD, I have no problem.  Weird.

  • Which PCI SATA card for B&W G3?

I just picked up a 400GB Seagate SATA drive and I would like to install it into my B&W G3. Does anyone have any recommendations on which SATA PCI card to buy? I have found prices from $22 to over $100. Most of those on the low end when you look at the specs always reference the minimum requirements for a PC, but nothing for a Mac.
If the card is PCI compliant, shouldn't it just be plug and play?

SIIG's SC-MP4A12 UltraATA 133/100 Pro is what I went with - should retail about 65-100$. Be careful with lower priced models as the bus speed may be lower (in my head, this being the speed at which data is transfered through the harddrive into the system and back. Slower might be OK but there's little point in getting a drive that you are at pains to get info to and from. And the card MUST be mac compatible - no it isn't just plug and play (I learned that the hard way assuming a Belkin would be since they make so much mac stuff). Others to look for include ACard. Also keep in mind there are serial ATA and ultra ATA cards - get a drive that matches the card and vice versa.
So far the SIIG card works but I'm having some hiccups and kernal panics (probably an addressing issue - it takes a bit longer to start up the computer as it looks for the OS across all the drives and something might be mismatched by me right now). Also, leave your OS-based drive attached/connected to the motherboard connection (though you can have back up startup disks attached to the IDE controller - that's another name for the card, right) since it looks there first on start-up it appears. Hope that helps.

  • Recommend a 4 way SATA controller card?

I am having huge problems of finding a SATA controller card that:
    1. Can attach 4 discs
    2. No raid (i will use ZFS)
    3. supports NCQ
    4. supports SATA II (i.e. 3Gbps)
If anyone know of a card that works, please post the model here, so I can buy it. Ive looked everywhere, but it seems that the SATA chipset that are supported, can only be found on motherboards, and not as standalone cards.

Ok, this card requires a PCI-X slot. It is therefore suited to server motherboards. I have heard that PCI-X will work with an ordinary PCI slot without problems. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Mac Mini Early 2006 Mini PCIe SATA Card Not Showing Up

I'm trying to add a couple of SATA ports to an early 2006 mac mini by swapping out the mini PCIe AirPort for a SATA card. This is the card I'm using http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/2-Port-Mini-PC I-Express-Internal-SATA-II-Controller-Card~MPEXSATA22I, problem is it doesn't seem to show up when installed in the mac. The card works perfectly when installed in a different machine.
The AirPort card shows up fine when swapped back, so the connector's okay. But with the SATA card installed, System Profiler says the computer doesn't contain any PCI cards. I've tried resetting the NVRAM with no success. I don't even see an entry for the device it in the ioreg output, so I'm thinking there might be a power issue. Does the mac mini supply both 3.3V and 5V to the mini PCIe connector? Is there anything special I need to do to get this card to show up?
    Thanks.

There a long thread about this on the 123MacMini forum.  At page three, they mention drivers (you need drivers, right?) and there is a link...
    http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22943&postdays=0&postorder=asc& highlight=pcie+sata&start=30
Actually, that thread might refer to a different, but similar, card.
Don't know if it finally worked.  Be very interested to hear.  (Not sure why Apple is/has always shunned eSATA?)

  • Boot MEGA 180 from PCI Sata card

My onboard IDE controller has given up the ghost so I have purchased a PCI sata card to use a spare sata disk, the problem is I can't see any way to get the 180 to boot from the PCI card.  Anyone any ideas?

Yep - I disabled the PATA ports.
No - the card has no bios - I guess this is the problem.
