Recommend a quiet external drive?

I have a Newer Technologies miniStack - at 250 GB, small by today's standards, but it's big enough for my needs. However, compared to my nearly-silent iMac, it is annoying. It seems like the fan runs a lot more than it used to, even when it has no reason to be doing anything. Can anyone suggest a very quiet external drive? I'd like to spend $150 or less, although I can be flexible about that.
Thanks,
Faye

I bought a Mercury Elite-AL Pro from OWC. It is pretty quiet. $150 would get you a 320 GB FW 400 + USB.

  • Need a good recommendation on an external drive

Digitizing DVCProHD footage. Our internal 3TB Raid keeps getting filled up. Wanted to capture straight to an external Drive. Was going to use LaCie bigdisk quadra via FW800 but FCP kept dropping frames during capture and would bust the capture. Currently capturing to Internal Raid (using Apple Pro Rez(HQ)) Then transferring files to external drives. Would like to skip this step.
If I use the eSATA connection with this drive can I capture straight to it or is there another external drive that would be fast enough to capture directly?

Why are you capturing DVCPRO HD as ProRes HQ? That is a HUGE waste of space. Capture DVCPRO HD as DVCPRO HD...zero quality loss. You gain nothing by going to ProRes from DVCPRO HD.
And ProRes HQ is for 2K workflows...all you are gaining over regular ProRes are files twice the size.
    http://forums.creativecow.net/faq/applefinalcutpro#75
You are wasting a lot of space needlessly. And the ONLY external drives that can play back HQ are eSATA, Fibre and miniSAS. Firewire won't cut it.

  • Need very large and quiet external drive for my mac mini

Hi, I already own a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme 1TB triple interface drive.
the problem though is that it is extremely loud.
can anyone recommend an external hard drive as large or at least a 500 GB drive that's reliable and more importantly quiet.
    thanks in advance

can anyone recommend an external hard drive as large
or at least a 500 GB drive that's reliable and more
    importantly quiet.
Not quite what you asked for but this really is better...
Buy a PC box. Find one that is dead quiet and has a large number of disk drive bays. I have an Antec "Sonata" with a
2.4Ghz Pentium on an Asus M/B inside. The sonata is a
full sized tower and makes about is much noise at a Mac
Mini. Load the box up with up to 6 disk drives.
Next install Linux and use NFS to export the file system
to the Mac(s) (OK if you don't like Linux use Apple's
"darwin" as the two are nearly the same thing) What you've
got now is a "file server" which has much more functionalliy than a firewire disk drive. For example it can serve
the same files to 100 Macs and it can have it's own RAM cache and do RAID. You want "quiet" put the file server on the end of a 100 foot long Ethernet cable and put in in a closet. Darwin/Linux/BSD is happy to be "headless"
(that means run with no monitor/keyboard/mouse.)
Once you start takling "terabyters" you really should start
thinking about file servers and RAID and backup
It can be fast too. The server can make use of as much
RAM as you want to use as a cache, the RAID caclulations
and RAID multiple writes are done on the server
Apple has it's own storage system but it's middle four
digit price tag you can build the same thing with the
Antec Sonota box and common parts
My setup works well. The Seagate SATA dives are faster
than the Mini's internal drive but the Mini only has
100BaseT Eithernet. So that becomes the bottleneck.
I have yet to try to setup a firewire network between
the server and the Mini. It could be done but I'm not
    motivated. 100BaseT works well enough

  • Bought retina Mbp yesterday couldn't afford biggest hard drive, recommendations for future external drive?

I bought a retina Mbp yesterday. I bought the 8 RAM. It is the middle model. I couldn't afford the top model with more RAM and bigger hard drive. I have been told that in the future, I will probably need an external hard drive. Any recommendations on external hard drives?

If you wanna save some money, go to an internet retailer/local computer store and buy an external enclosure. Then after that, buy a notebook/desktop hard drive (whatever fits, 3.5in = desktop, 2.5in= notebook). I reccomend getting a hard drive over 500gb, with 7200rpm, sata 6gbs (if desktop HDD) and at least 8mb cache. If your Mac supports it, do RAID 1, which basically sets the opposite disk as a backup. You can also buy an SSD, which is much more expensive, but up to 3x faster than a HDD. You can buy them at the same store and can format the drive to your liking. They usually come in 2.5 inch, are extremely light, have a large data cache, and are the future of memory storage.
Also, while you are over there buy 1600mhz 8gb memory. Get the single stick and replace only 1 of the already installed sticks. I personally think 12gb is enough, but if you want more, buy another stick of the same RAM.
    I hope this helped!

  • Recommended setup of External drives

Currently I have an iMac, MacBook Pro, MacMini and an AppleTV all networked using an AEBSn. The advice that I need is that I'm thinking of purchasing two external hard dives, one to use for time machine that will be connected to the AEBSn via USB so that all of the computers can be backed up. The other will be connected to the iMac which is the main computer (via firewire) and be used for my iTunes and iPhoto libraries which are getting rather large. Is this the best configuration or should I be doing something else? Cost is not a big issue, however I would like to keep it as low as possible.

The networked Time Machine backup drive, if it's backing up three Macs, would need to be fairly large. To work effectively, it should be at least twice as large as the data to be backed up. If that data includes the data on the iMac's new FireWire drive, it may be more cost effective to get a separate Time Machine drive and connect it to your main iMac. This will also allow the hourly Time Machine backup (as well as the initial complete backup) to complete much faster and provide a longer backup history for data recovery.
So that's one USB drive for general network storage and Time Machine backups (for the MacBook Pro and Mac mini); one USB or FireWire drive for Time Machine backup of the iMac (including data on the FireWire drive); and one FireWire drive for the iMac's additional storage.
For the FireWire drive(s), I think you should get one with both FireWire and USB 2.0. Apple took FireWire off the newest MacBook, so if that's a trend, having both interfaces will allow for the best long-term usefulness of the drive.

  • Recommend External Drive?

So I finally got my MBP and am going to be using the machine primarily for Logic and on the go music related stuff. I need to get an external firewire drive to store all my samples so that paths can remain consistent between my G5 tower and my new MBP when transferring Logic files back and forth.
Any recommendations on what external drive to get? I want to go with a bus-powered drive for less crap in my travel bag, but I have heard of people burning out ports with these types of drives. Is that something to worry about? Also, 7200 rpm spin speed will be most efficient since I'll be working with audio files. Will a drive rated with that spin speed be able to draw enough power from the MBP's firewire port? Also, no less than 100GB of storage.
Basic questions, I know, but I haven't been in the laptop game for a while (about 5 years) and would like to make the best decision I can.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
I just got one of these drives and put it inside of one of these enclosures. Spent about $160 & couldn't be happier.
Firewire bus powers it. Haven't tried USB though. The enclosure has a power switch. It's nice & small. The LED is super-bright. If you read the reviews on newegg.com you'll see that that is the main issue have with the enclosure. Personally I don't mind it so much....
So far, I'm loving it. I'm rendering After Effects comps to it right now. I feel good recommending this setup to anyone.

  • Is there a problem with my external drive?

I recently bought a WD "My Passport" drive - 500GB USB2/3 including WD's own Smartware software. I had to replace it. This is what happened.
I reformatted the VOLUME not the drive, in Disk Utility, from MS DOS FAT32 to Mac OS X Extended (Journalled)
    I created 3 partitions
I used two partitions to copy the contents of the 2 partitions of my ancient Wiebetech FW drive
I named the third partition Time Machine
I spent a whole day creating an encrypted disk image the size of my PB G4's HD in the TM partition
Though very slow, it seemed to do everything. The next day it took forever to recognise the partitions, and the drive kept making a metallic tapping sound. Of the first two partitions, it would show either or both, but trying to switch between them in a Finder window caused Finder to freeze and the computer needed a hard reboot. It didn't show the TM partition, except in Disk Utility.
In the end, I phoned Amazon to say the drive was defective and they sent an identical replacement. This time I :
    Deleted the WD software first
Reformatted the drive to Mac OS X Extended (Journalled)
Copied my Wiebetech HD to FOLDERS not partitions
Set up Time Machine to use the remaining space (plenty of room left)
So far, it seems to have behaved itself. HOWEVER, when I go into Disk Utility, the top level still shows the drive to be MS DOS FAT32. Yet the VOLUME (which is the same size as the whole drive) is Mac OS X Extended (Journalled). Does this mean the replacement drive is also faulty?

The WD My Books have had far less than glowing reviews for Macs...

  • External Drive to play DVDs on Macbook Air

Does anyone have a recommendation of which external drive to purchase for my Macbook air so I can play my DVDs and load Microsoft Office onto my Macbook Air?

It's a subjective questions since each user will have preferences that vary from one to another. I have an Apple External Superdrive for the MacBook Air. I tend to favor the matching asthetics and support. Many "generic" external drives will work just fine. I have a Toshiba external for one of my netbooks, and it works too.
Realize that the Apple unit will not function on any other computer, if that is important to you. It runs $79.00, which is a tad more pricey than your "run-of-the-mill" external DVD.

  • Looking for a quiet, sleepy drive

Any suggestions for a quiet external drive for the Mini, that will go to sleep when the Mini does? I am about to return a Maxtor OneTouch II that I found to be noisy (louder than the Mini, for sure) and which unfortunately refuses to sleep when the Mini does.
For anyone who has a OneTouch: I was surprised at the loudness of this drive (it sounds like a constant fan noise), after reading how quiet others found it. I was also surprised that it won't sleep when the Mini does - it spins down, but then immediatly spins up again. Maybe I got a bad unit?
Sorry for posting yet another 'which disk to buy' thread
Mac Mini; 12in Powerbook, iPod Shuffle   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Bobb, I checked with Maxtor on this sleep issue. The support person told me that the unit is supposed to just run. Period. Of course, you can unmount the drive and then unplug it or turn it off, but from what he told me there is no way to make it sleep when the Mac does.
I also have a LaCie drive and it sleeps just fine.
On the other hand, the hard drives in servers, Tivos or similar devices that need to be on 24/7, do it year in and year out.
The noise, though, can drive one a bit crazy.

  • Recommended External Drive for iTunes

Can anyone recommend a good 2-3 terabyte external drive to be attached either to Mac Mini or Network and to hold all my current and future iTunes media ??
I have 500gb already and dont want to use up the entire Mac Mini drive
    Tha

I have been using a Western Digital 3TB drive for about 3 months now ( upgraded from a 2TB other make ) and have had no issues. It is quiet and reliable and fast enough sending movies to ATV over LAN that I don't notice any delays.
Sometimes it will sleep but wakes upon accessing a movie.... the movie starts playing after a few seconds buffering.
    No complaints.

  • Recommend An External Drive (FW800 or eSATA)?

    Hi everyone
I wanted to see if people had any recommendations for external drives... I'd like to get one with FW800 - eSATA would be a bonus to future-proof myself but not necessary...
So far, I've tried the NewerTech miniStack v3 and am rather disappointed with it... its fan comes on on frequently, even if I'm not accessing the drive...
So far, I've seen the Seagate FreeAgent for Mac and the WD MyBook... what about GTech's products?
    Thanks!

If you are going to utilize the ODD sata ports, then yes the newertech esata adapter + mercury elite dual drive esata only.

Make sure you get the right dual-drive esata only one. OWC updated it, as it used to be all black. There's a usb one that can be confusing.
As for WD drives, right now they are on top of their game. Giving best speed, quietness, cooling, AND cheap. WD Blacks are the best all around everything.
They are fast (gives Velociraptors decent competition imo), 32mb cache, very quiet, run cool, 5 year warrranty, and most of all dirt cheap. $69 for 640GB and $99 for a high performance 1TB.
I used to like Hitachi's enterprise class long time ago for raids, but I think they have just started to fall off.
The reviews from newegg of WD Black pretty much say it all:

  • A New MBP (and one for the road: any highly-recommended external drive for.

If I order a new MBP 17" for architecture and planning grad program, will SL come installed on the machine? Is SL considered a whole new OS or jut an update to Leopard? I am not even sure I am wording the questions correctly, so I apologize if I am not. I stopped at Tiger because the Leopard OS looked a bit too intimidating for me back then but I think I can deal with it now. Is it a big set-back that I did not learn how to use Leopard and now I am getting SL?
thanks for any help in this area.
I will throw this out there. I also need a decent but very heavy duty external hard drive to use for the work done with CAD. Any recommendations on a top-of-the-line heavy duty external hard drive? I guess the case is the main thing but the drive should be able to take some extra abuse because I baby the MacBook Pros but sometime the external drives get the abuse. I think USB2.0 is good enough for what I need.
    Thanks Again

I would imagine that you could turn up good and bad reports on any drive. I have been highly satisfied with my 3 LaCies, two dating back to 2004. And, LaCie has very good phone support.
I use only clones and drag and drop for data changes between clonings. If I had to choose one method of backing up, then I definitely would use this process. Still, one can take a dual approach other than mine. The idea is to have a clone, which is updated fairly recently, to serve as a fail-safe, system backup, and restoration device. And, one could still use TM for day-to-day backups because of the flexibility it allows in moving backwards in time to retrieve data and because it updates automatically frequently. I want to experiment more with TM. So, I will move to this sort of dual system in the near future--as soon as I figure out which partition on my main external I can do without.
For cloning, I like SuperDuper because it has the ability to make incremental clones--thus, shortening the recloning process significantly. CCC is good, but I have never used it. Actully, Disk Utility is a highly respectable cloner, but it does not have as many options as the others, including not having the ability to make incremental clones.

  • Any recommendations for a recovery software for my lost photos on my external drive?

Would like recommendations for a reputable recovery software for my lost photos from my external drive that I used with my MacBook Pro.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Recommend a good external DVD drive for Mac?

can anyone recommend a good external rewritable DVD drive for my EMac? i want something that will work with iDVD of course... thanks in advance.

LaCie is one. The Macally 500BC Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure with a separate Pioneer S-Drive is another viable option.
I personally use multiple ADS Tech 1394 Pyro FW Enclosures with a Pioneer 110D S-Drive as well as a few ext. FW HD's and they all work well on mult. G4 systems (completely interchangeable via FW 400).

  • Can anyone recommend a good 2TB external drive for my iMac 10.9 ?

can anyone recommend a good 2TB external drive for my iMac 10.9 ?

The Griffin Survivor is a military-grade case that I use. It's $40 and I purchased it at Best Buy. It has a rubber piece that covers the charging port, but can be easily removed for charging while still in the case. The only downside of the case is because of the added girth, it makes the iPod unusable with iHomes or other docks unless you take it out of the case.
