Recommend a source for learning about scripting?

I don't even know the difference between AppleScript and Automator. Is there a book or instructional download to help me get started?

  • More sources for learning about Aperture

I need to decide if I should continue using Aperture or not (10 days left on my trail) and I would like to know what sources there is for learning more about Aperture. I've looked at the videos that are available at Apples sites but are there other sources that I could use?
Yes, I know about the manual but I usually learn faster with examples.

I would say that one of the best instruction for Aperture is Derrick Story and Scott Bourne at Lynda.com http://movielibrary.lynda.com . There is a cost of 25$ a month for Lynda.com but its all you can eat with no ads.I feel it was more then worth it and if there is know other training you can just quet. It will allow your to hit the ground running.

  • Can you recommend a good source for learning about the Environment

Rather than post a bunch of obviously uninformed thread topics, I would really appreciate some recommendation of some books, DVDs, online vids, etc.
I've figured out and executed some of the basics such as playing the arpeggiator and the midi delay, and recording the output of the arpeggiator/delay to a track, but, obviously, there's a whole lot more (understatement of the year so far?)
The environment seems to be a snakepit of danger - don't want to screw up any projects.
Any recs would be greatly appreciated.

  • Good source for learning - SQL Stored Proceedures using Dreamweaver

I am looking for a good source for learning how to integrate
    Stored
    Proceedures using Dreamweaver?
Is there a book or something online?
    Thanks

    Hey Lee,
You find yourself in that position, I find myself in that
    position, every
damn developer/programer in the world find themselves in that
    position. It
may be on different levels, but everyones in the same boat.
Here is my suggestion. Take the existing knowledge you have,
    pick a
technology that is a bit more futureproof (if the one you
    have is getting
outdated) and one that isn't too far removed from the one you
    know and put
it all into that one area.
Databases are really important if you want to be a decent web
    developer. If
you're serious and want to be good then devote time to a
    particular database
and get to know it well. I would suggest SQL Server. You
    don't have to be
DBA standard but get as much knowledge on it as you can.
    Never underestimate
    your required knowledge of databases.
Set yourself goals. Say to yourself "In 6 months I want to be
    a proficient
developer in this language" and go for it. Don't get
    side-tracked into
something else just keep focused on one area and get good at
    it. Yes, that
language will become outdated in time but you will be all the
    more ready to
take on the next because of your past experiences.
I try to look at it like this; It is better to a master of
    one technology
and know enough to get by in others than a Jack of all
    technologies but a
    master of none.

  • Source to learn about cell phone programming etc...

Hi, I'm new to forum. I would like to learn all I can about programming, modifying and messing with cell phones ( Droid X would be my preference but would like to learn all). Is there books, a site or anything else that I can buy to learn more? Getting my Droid early next week, I'm a bit excited can you tell!
    Thanks Scott

I guess I didn't explain what I wanted to learn correctly. I would like to learn about how to set up, configure, root, and mess around with cell phones (Droid X).
    Thanks Scott
To do those things, you will need to do an internet search for that. We cannot explain here because the forum moderators will remove the information before you can see it.
The owners manual is on the verizon site for download. That will help with the setup part.
Be advised that rooting your phone will nullify your warranty on the phone.

  • Help, advice needed for learning Action Script

I don't have any experience with programing and even scripting and I can't find tutorials for total beginners. I started to read this one
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ActionScript/3.0_ProgrammingAS3/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d118a9 b8cbfe-7ff7.html
but I have difficulties understanding the explanations.
If you have any advice and pointers to tutorials for total dummy beginners I will greatly  appreciate it.

I’m 27 years old and one month ago I started study ActionScript 3.0. After red a lot of forums with recommendations about what need to do for study as3 I clear next things:
Try to visit forums about as3 and discus with people about your problems and also try to help other solve their problems (you can help a lot of people to solve their problems, you can find a lot answers to your questions, you can share your experience with others)
Try to read books about as3 (in books you can find all theory and some examples for this theory, so this info will be very helpful for you, because it’s a fundamental knowledge what you must to know)
Try to visit sites with tutorials (on the net you can find a lot sites with tutorials and there you step by step will study a lot of things)
Share your knowledge with others (create your blog or something else where you will show to people your examples of work, where you will write about as3 and will share your experiences and knowledge, this can give you chance to consolidate your knowledge and give opportunity other people study as3)
Try to separate big not understandable problem to smaller(after you find answer to all small problems you can find answer to big problem)
And the main what you must remember then YOU MUST CODING EVERY DAY! (I think without it you never been a as3 coder.)
I can recommend next sites witch can help you to study ActionScript 3.0:

  • Recommend good books for learning java?

im using Java How to Program, Deitel&deitel.
    i find it all right.
what do u think about this one?
    can u recommend any other?
    Natasha

There's a lot of online reference available, too:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/second_edition/html/j.title.doc.html
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/index.html
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html
There's links to all the online documentation, as well as to a few recommended books that you can buy, at:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/index.html
As for specific book, sorry I can't help you. I personally learned a lot more Java by browsing through the API reference than I did by checking out coding examples. But that might only be because I already had a decent background in programming when I started. If you start Java as your first programming language, then an example and explanation filled book would be really useful. Like I said, sorry about not being able to provide any solid recommendations.
Hope that helps though. Check out those links, they are pretty useful. The tutorial is pretty helpful sometimes, too.

  • Best resources for learning InDesign scripting

    Hello,
I am teaching myself scripting in InDesign and having problems with the help systems.
I read the scripting docs from Adobe, examine free scripts and use the help in the ExtendScript Toolkit but I lack an education in javascript to really do well.
What books or online resources do you think could help me go from tinkerer to amateur scripter ?
    Thanks in advance,
    emmanuel.

In my experience as a learner, there is no substitute for trial and error. Olav Kvern's very helpful comments in his numerous examples (with very helpful explanatory comments) are a great start, because they enable anyone to start experimenting on their own. And I return to his examples practically every day. They answer such simple questions as "How do I open a new document?", as well as giving very clear, well-commented examples of stuff that I would otherwise find completely impossible -- such as "How do I rotate a text frame around the top-left corner?"
I'm no longer a complete beginner, but I am very much a learner still, and I think trail and error is THE way to learn anything, especially scripting. When I started off, it was about 99% error. Now I've got it down to about 75% error. But I nearly always end up with a script that works, after a struggle that is every bit as enjoyable as it is maddening, and it's a huge sense of achievement when I get there. Some gullible folks have even paid me money for this -- I have one in the pipeline for tomorrow!
Rather than reading too much stuff written by experts, I would urge you to experiment as much as possible, just by playing around to see what works and what doesn't work. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work first time. I'll bet even scripting experts (most of whom are on this list) fail on almost every first attempt. After you get one modest script to work, and then another, you'll build up a sort of "library of past scripting achievements" in your head (and in your scripts panel). Nowadays, every time I start a script, I think of how I successfully managed to do something like it before -- and I build from there.
Good luck with it -- Jeremy

  • Best sources for learning digital scrapbooking?

I am interested in learning more about digital scrapbooking using PSE7.  I'd like to print them using Shutterfly. I've looked all over the internet and am now confused where to start. I need to start with BASICS!  I'd love to find a message board where people exchange ideas.  Thanks for any ideas you have!

Once you get the hang of digital scrapping, you are going to become a collector of great digital kits and elements. My advice to people just starting out is top get organized *before* you accumulate a lot of stuff. And beleive me, you will! If you are using PSE ther eis Organizer built in, but I founf that to slow my computer down a bit. Other scrappers use Picasa. I use ACDSee Photo Manager and I find that one to be the easiest and the best.
If you google "digital freebies" you'll find some great stuff out there. Also, Digital Scrapbook Place is a great site for tutorials.
    Have fun!

  • Learning about scripting, XHMTL, etc.

Hi. I've used bother GoLive and Dreamweaver to produce a
couple of websites, but I'd like to understand more about the
foundations of how a website works. Specifically, I'd like to know
more about XHTML, PHP, ASP, scripting etc. I'd like to know
specifically what all of these are, and when I might need to use
    what to create different functions.
I'm not looking to become a full-blown web developer. My
interest in this is primarily in being able to identify when I need
what outside help, and in being able to communicate with 'real' web
developers. I'd also be interested to know a bit of HTML, so I can
go in the back end of Dreamweaver and GoLive to identify what the
issue is, when problems arise. And hopefully to be able to fix them
    myself.
My question is really in two parts - What do I need to know?
And where is the best place to find user friendly,
step-by-step guidance on whatever it is I need to know?
Perhaps someone could recommend a good book on the subject?
Possibly one that has supplementary publication, should I decide
that I DO want to go into this further ...
    Thanks in advance
    Mira

    Hi Mira,
I realize you've already gotten an excellent answer, but I'd
like to mention one other book that I think may be of great help to
    you:
Webmaster in a Nutshell by O'Reilly Media (ISBN:
0596003579). I understand that you have no desire to become a web
developer, but don't let the title discourage you—what it is
is an overview of various technologies, with each one presented as
    a brief guided tour.
It will help you understand the purpose of each technology,
and give you the ability to identify them when you encounter them.
I cut my teeth on O'Reilly books, and they have plenty of other
in-depth books should you find yourself need of more than a bird's
    eye view.
Other publishers that offer a good selection of accurate,
useful books are: friends of ED, Peachpit Press (Visual Quickstart
Guides), and PoguePress/O'Reilly (Missing Manual series).
    Regards,
    Bev

  • Good Resources for learning Bash Scripting

I know, I should probably be lectured for the fact that I'm a heavy Linux user who programs in a variety of languages, but is very limited when it comes to bash scripting itself.
So, I've decided now is the time to learn. It seriously beats writing configuration scripts in C, I think (that's not really what C is used for these days...).
So, anyone know of some good (preferably free) resources on learning Bash?
    Edit:
OR if someone has any suggested alternatives (e.g., Python as a replacement?), do tell.
