Recommend a superdrive for a G4 Dual 500?

Anyone know how I can find a compatible superdrive for a Mac G4 Dual 500? What specs do I need to know about?

Hi-
The Pioneer DVR-115 or the Pioneer DVR-116 are very good drives.
Pioneer has the best native support in OS X, especially after OS X 10.4.3.
Prior to that, most any drive will need the Patchburn utility for full burn support.
My choice would be (is) the Pioneer DVR-116. Probably one of the quietest, and definitely a refined drive.

  • Recommended partition layout for Ubuntu/Arch dual boot?

I just got a new (old) laptop, and my plan is to dual-boot Arch and Xubuntu. The Xubuntu is mostly to hold me over so I have a stable system while I'm setting Arch up/if I mess up Arch somehow/for testing. It has a new 160GB (149.05 GiB) drive, and my plan is to allocate roughly 35 GiB each for the Xubuntu and Arch / partitions, and a roughly 80 GiB partition for common data (that is, most of my home directory folders will be symlinks to that partition - e.g. ~/code will link to /common/code*).
Right now, my plan is to have three logical partitions - one for Xubuntu, one for Arch, and one that contains the common and swap partitions. So, I'm asking (A) are there any better ideas for partitioning, (B) does Arch still need a /boot partition, and (C) how should I handle the bootloader situation? (i.e. should I install Xubuntu's to the MBR and have it chainload to Arch's on a separate partition, or what?)
*The reason I'm not using a common /home partition is because my config files and the like will probably be different between the two OSes.

    A) Probably -- partitioning is always a relative subject
    B) no...and it never did
    C) Whatever you prefer.
    Basic tips :
Having a separate /home helps in re-installing(if you ever have to) and it saves your config files.
Having a separate /var allows you to put a different filesystem on it which may be more suitable to the type of files in /var
You can use a separate /boot, if you are going to use the same /boot for both Xubuntu and Arch. That way 1 partition handles both. If not, I think there is no need to create a separate partition. If you do create one and plan to use it for Xubuntu and Arch, make sure that you install a filesystem that is acceptable to both distros. For eg. Arch grub is patched so it can read from ext4. I do not know if Xubuntu's grub is patched or not.

  • 2nd hard drive for Dual 500 MHz Sawtooth

I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth with a 40 GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM. I don't have any PCI slots left and I was hoping to add a second drive. Is this possible? Does this model have the ribbon and power supply for a second drive? I've been searching the discussions, but haven't found any info on this.
Also, is an ATA-133 drive fast enough for this model or could I put something in that's faster?

    Hi, Al -
    I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth...
A dual 500MHz G4 is not a Sawtooth model; the Sawtooths are the G4 (AGP) models.
Your dual 500MHz G4 is a Gigabit Ethernet model.
Yes, it does come pre-equipped to accept a second internal drive - the mounting sled, data cable connector, and power cable connector for it are already present.
The built-in controller is an ATA/66 controller. This means it has a hardware limit of not being able to 'see' more than 128GB of drive size. If a drive larger than that is connected, only 128GB of it will be available. This is a drive size limit, not a volume limit; partitioning will make no difference.
The new drive should be an ATA (or PATA, Parallel ATA) drive, not a SATA (Serial ATA) drive. Although the bus speed is ATA/66, newer drives are often ATA/100 or ATA/133 - that's okay, such a drive should work fine though it will operate at ATA/66 speed. Since that is the case, there is no advantage in paying extra for speeds in excess of ATA/66 - unless the plan is to be able to use it at a later time on a newer machine with a faster bus.
Typically the original drive will have been jumpered as Master. Set the jumpers on the new drive to Slave. Which drive is which makes little difference; the designations of Master and Slave are addresses, and do not establish a priority or preference - either can be used as the primary boot drive.
If your original drive happens to be a Western Digital, it may be using a third jumper setting, Single - this is often used by WD drives when it is the only device on the bus. If this is the case, it will need to have its jumpers reset to Master (or Slave, as desired) when adding a second drive.
When there are two devices on the bus, and Master and Slave are used, there can be only one of each.
Do not use Cable Select on that model G4.
Another option would be to use a firewire drive. Your machine is firewire bootable. Such drives offer a lot in convenience, in the ability to move them from one machine to another quickly.
Some cost savings in having a firewire drive can be achieved by purchasing a firewire drive enclosure (rather than a complete drive), then installing a relatively inexpensive ATA drive.

  • For Sale: Mac G4 Dual 500 - Worth It?

Hopefully this is in the correct forum. If not forgive (and maybe still give me an opinion...).
    I found someone selling this:
Selling a Mac G4 Dual 500 processor, 1 gig ram, 20 gig hard drive, 2
firewire, 2 usb, DVD-rom, Zip drive. Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger installed,
also Toast, Photoshop, Acrobat, Real Player, Apple Works.
Comes with 17" Dell monitor, keyboard, mouse, usb hub.
for only $200. Can someone link me to the exact description of this (like wiki or ...).
He says that it is currently running 10.4.10 and performing excellently.
My sis has three children and I am thinking this is a super way to introduce them to Macs.
She has a 12" PowerBook and I have a MacBook Pro and was thinking it would also be a good idea to have this around loaded with TechTool Pro incase we need to use it to get the PB or MBP started and repaired. Am I right in my thinking?
Are there any upgrades that can be done on this Mac G4? Can I add another HD? The owner thinks the ram can go up to another 512?
So is it worth the $200?
    thanks all,
    frank

Hi! This would probably be a good buy IF you get all the software discs especially the Tiger discs in case you ever need to do a clean install since the disc for another computer won't work. Look HERE for more info but it looks like a Gigabit model. The ram can be maxed at 2 gigs If there are enough slots. I've bought several Sawtooths for 100 bucks but none had a monitor. So it's not overly cheap but it might be a good learner machine. You can add a processor upgrade but again you'll be spending a few hundred. Tom

  • Recommended transition solution for ISP:s with enterprise customers?

What would be the recommended solution(s) for ISP:s with enterprises only as customers?
It both needs to support IPv6 and at the same time save IPv4 resources.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
There  are many possible choice for a soft transition of the Service Provider:
    - Dual-Stack
The SP can run both protocols in the backbone for a while so he can test IPv6 Service by switching some part of the Network to IPv6 Only and see if it is OK. In case there is a problem he can get back to dual-stack, fix the issue and resume its testing until it is Ok and he can allow IPv6 Only.
    - It is possible to provide IPv6 Service without upgrading the backbone to IPv6 Immediately using 6RD if the backbone is IPv4 or 6PE /6VPE (I did the dev-test for 6PE and 6VPE for CISCO for 3 years) if the backbone is IPv4/MPLS. This way the SP can start providing both IPv4 and IPv6 without upgrading the backbone. He can then move slowly to IPv6 with a Dual-Stack period not to switch immediately to IPv6 and allow to fallback if soething is not properly configured to work in IPv6 Only.
With 6VPE, the customer benefit of a dual-stack VPN and recently, CISCO has improved the Support of Multicast in MPLS which was main weakness of MPLS based solutions.
Once the SP has migrated to IPv6 Only, it is still possible to offer dual-stack, IPv4 and IPv6 service to its customers using DS-Lite or better, A+P when it will be available as A+P (dIVI-pd based) does not rely on CGN which has a couple of drawbacks for the SPs.
Once the Customer has migrated to IPv6 Only, it is also still possible to access some IPv4 resources (Networks, servers, applications) using NAT64.

  • Will my dual 500 go faster? Harddrive & external hard drive issues

    I need some advise, please!
    I have a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4. Memory: 1.38 GB SDRAM. Harddrive 40GB
The memory slots are a follows:
    256MB
    128MB
    512MB
    512MB
    1. I would like to speed things up as it is sooo slooow! If I replace the 2 smaller cards with 512MB each will that make a substantial difference or not? I work mainly in PhotoshopCS so I am working with big files, and I am begining to get the feeling someone's sneaked OS6 on here when I was asleep - yes its that bad!!!
    2. On start up I get a folder with a question mark in it. Not an immediate problem as it always finds the drive. However I have noticed that when I go to the disk utility to repair permissions the name of the drive in the left hand pane doesn't match the name of the drive on my desktop. Is this the cause? If so can you tell me how to solve it. My desktop harddrive is called MAC, the one showing in disk utilities is called disk0s9 ...that's a 0 not an O in disk0s9
    3. Finally I shutdown my computer without ejecting the external formac 500GB harddrive first. On reboot this morning it says it doesn't recognise the disk and gives me the options to format, ignore, eject. Obviously I haven't tried formatting. I have tied all reboot senarios including restarting, shut down, both with and without the external drive plugged in, switched on/off to no avail. HOWEVER the external drive DOES work on my powerbook. How do I make it work again on my desktop computer? It seems to me to be the computer at fault not the external drive.

    Hilary-
Here's a doc to explain target mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Should you not be able to restore DVR or ext. drive access, Target mode is a great option to have.
It sounds like you better get a copy of DiskWarrior FedEx'ed ASAP.
Like I mentioned previously, I think you have directory problems (and possibly worse). That would explain the question mark folder at start up, and the different ID for your internal drive. The internal drive, if the origional, is old, tired and wants a break.
I'm glad to hear you have a possible backup solution with the ext drive.
    Don't delay.
Along with back up, I have some things I think you should try.
Because you have possible directory problems, I think it would be good to try a "safe boot". This explains how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
This explains what safe boot is:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Basically, you force the system to look at itself (directory check), and it simplifies the start up items. Note that some things don't work in safe mode, but you can check other items such as drives and FW.
Also, with the various devices not mounting, you might try a PRAM and NVRAM reset
This link explains doing so via the keyboard at start up
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If that doesn't help, reset the PMU. It's inside the computer, on the motherboard, back by the little battery (that should be replaced every year or so)
This link explains how to reset the PMU manually
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
Doing the above may help to restore the DVD drive and the Firewire.
Also, when resetting the PMU, of course, shut down the computer, then, unplug ALL cords- power, USB, FW, etc. Also, don't pace around in stocking feet, or anything that causes static before reaching inside. Before unplugging the power cord from the back of the computer, touch the metal on the computer (this goes to ground) to safely discharge your built up static.
Most of all, don't panic. Be methodical, and you'll get through this.
    Good Luck-
    Chris

  • How big of a hardrive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 dual 500.

    Hi there.
I wanted to now how big of a hard drive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 powerpc with a dual 500 processor . at the present time i have one 80 and one 20 gig drive in there now.
So my answer is how big of a drive can i use before i have problems with seting it up. Like i want to use a 500 gig drive in my computer and my old 80 gig too. i want to buy a apple tv and store my dvds on the big 500 hardrive so i have alot of room for the vidio files, for apple t.v . If i can use one as big as one terabite you now the real big one that would be fine. The more room i have the better for me. I will be able to watch the movies i downloaded from the internet and i wont have to burn them at all.
This is of corse if apple tv will handle it.

    Hi-
If you need that much storage, and you'll have to buy a controller anyhow, get a SATA controller card, and put one or two 500gb SATA drives in. The enterprise class of SATA drives are made especially for multi media storage, have excellent seek times and fast data transfer rates. A "bargain" on a package can be had at OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM500GPCI/
    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM10TBPCI/
The MaxLine Pro drives have great characteristics, and are reviewed favorably.
I have an OWC SATA card, and the card works perfectly, and is cheaper than other makers cards of equivalent specs.

adobe flash  player  for (nokia x dual sim )mobile

    It's Android®...
There is no more Flash Player for Android and there won't be another. Android is no longer compatible with Flash Player. Playing Flash content is very processor consumptive and it drains your battery, also shortening the life of it. Android (Google) recommends using either "Dolphin" or "Puffin" as your browser if you need to view Flash content with a mobile device running Android. They're both availabe in the GooglePlay store. These browsers use "server side" rendering to reduce the load on your device.

  • Adding a vidio card for a hp palviloin 500-023w what is compatibale for me how many slots ?

adding a  vidio  card for a  hp palviloin 500-023w  what is compatibale for me how many slots ?

    Brule01, welcome to the forum.
There are two main things to consider when adding / upgrading a video card: 1) the wattage required to run it properly and 2) the length of the card.
Most newer mid-level video cards require at least 400W to operate properly.  The power supply unit (PSU) in the computer is 300W.  Therefore, to add a discrete video card will require a PSU upgrade, as well.  A card that will work with the existing 300W PSU will not be much, if any, better than the Integrated Video.  I recommend at least 500W (600W would be good for future upgrades).  I like OCZ and Corsair PSU's.  They are very good quality.
The video card has to be PCI Express x16 and it can be a double card.  The double cards only use one slot, but because of the width they may cover a second slot making it unavailable.  This is normally not a problem for most users.  Your computer case is mid-size.  Therefore, I recommend a card that is no longer than 9".  This will assure that it fits into the space provided.  You can choose a card and get the measurements.  Then, you can make a cardboard template of it to see if it will fit.  You should add 1" to the template if the card has additional power connector/s.  I like XFX, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY cards in that order.  This comes from spending many years on enthusist / gaming forums.

  • Can anyone recommend a process for moving just my OS and Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to the SSD?

I have an early 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. I just removed the superdrive and added an SSD. I want to use it to boot from and also run Photoshop and Lightroom from. Can anyone recommend a process for moving my OS and those programs to the SSD?

I'm assuming your doing this because of data you don't want pernament on the SSD as they can' be scrubbed like hard drives can.
    Disconnect any other drives.
1: Format the SSD 1 partition, click the box, option GUID and OS X extended journaled as the format.
    2: Download Carbon Copy Cloner.
3: Clone your MacintoshHD partition to a blank powered external drive also formatted the same as above.
4: Hold option/alt key and boot the machine (wired or built in keyboard) and then select the clone to boot from,
5: Once in the clone, click it's drive name and change the name if it's the same as the OS X boot volume.
6: On the clone, head to System Preferences > Accounts and create a new Admin account.
7: If you need to move files between accounts on the clone, see this. Combine two+ Users Accounts on the same machine   (be careful that your selecting the correct clones other account)
8: Once your moving files on the clone is complete, then log into the new user account and delete the old user account.
9: Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the clone to the SSD.
10: Use Disk Utiltiy to repair permissions on all drives.
The SSD should be moved to the HD slot and the HD to the optical slot and used as a file drive.
CCC has a option to not include certain folders like the other user account you don't want, however I tend not to recommend things that are not too far out of line with Apple's ways of doing things as it usually results in bad things occuring. Somewhere in OS X it's recorded of that other user account, so it might still show up in logins and such.
Also you may want to transfer some files to the other account, so that's why I recommend this method.
    Good Luck

  • Recommended bookmark tool for FF on Mac OS X Leopard?

    Hi all,
I have tried out the latest "Gmarks" add-on for sorting my ~1,500 bookmarks. Importing from FF directly does not work, and there is no other import option, e.g. from html. Does anyone have experience with google bookmarks and/or this add-on? Does this problem the depend on the version of Gmarks, FF or Mac OS X? Is the Google toolbar inevitable (it seems to be discontinued for FF)?
Of course, any other tool but Gmarks would be fine and I appreciate recommendations. Two things are essential: previewing bookmarks (so I don't need to open each one) and being able to search within the sites, rather than only the title and address. I have a synchronising option already, however this is less important.
    I am using FF 14.0.1 on a MacBook with OS X 10.5.8.

  • Is there a "Cisco Recommended" wireless headset for the SPA 504G Phones?

Hello, Is there a "Cisco Recommended" wireless headset for the SPA 504G Phones?
Please let me know.  Thank you, Paul

    Hi Paul,
My recommendation would be the "Plantronics Savii 700 series" which have worked consistently and without issues, you need the HL-10 Handset lifter with them which work with the SPA-500 series.
The Savii series come as DECT for when you are using it with a phone (Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better reception than Bluetooth) and Bluetooth for when you have it synced with a computer at the same time, it also comes with combination headset connectors so you can have one over the head, or around the neck or even just hanging over the ear.
I fully recommend them with the 500 series phones.
    Cheers,
    David.
