Recommend an Apple tv?

I'm thinking of buying a 40gb model mostly for listening to Apple lossless music through the optical output via an external amp. The music will be stored on my mac pro. I currently use an old Logitech squeezebox but I'm getting fed up with the buggy squeezecenter software.
I've seen a lot of comments on the forums regarding connection problems and was wondering if the contributors here recommend the ATV or should I stick with the squeezebox for a while longer?

I store most all of my commonly played playlists on my AppleTV as I don't always have my MacBook on. However I also store most of my purchased iTunes videos on a TimeCapsule, which to play them, I have to have my MacBook on as they run from the TC to my MacBook, then to the AppleTV. I don't have any connection problems (I'm running an 802.11n WiFi network, not that it matters).
I do however unplug the AppleTV every week or two just because it needs to be reset as it starts to run slow when flipping through it's menus (not playing music mind you), which I would describe it as on a Mac that the ram needs to be cleared.
The AppleTV is like having a modern juxebox and I'm very pleased with it. I never play iTunes on my MacBook like I use to before my AppleTV.
I would however suggest to you that you consider the 160 gig version incase you decide to just transfer your music directly to the AppleTV for when your Mac is off.

    Hey Xxx_Dank_xxX,
Have you ever been able to sync your iPod shuffle to iTunes on your computer, or has something recently occurred?  Are you working with a Mac or a PC?   Without knowing what has been recommended to you, I'm going to start here with the basics troubleshooting for this issue.

How can I sync my ipod nano 4 to iTunes on my PC? I've tried the sync botton on iTunes and the 5 steps recommended by Apple to correct sync problems with no luck.

How is your iPod configured to sync content from your iTunes library? Any error messages during the sync process?
You may want to reset warnings on the device by right->clicking on it under Devices and choosing Reset Warnings.  Then resync the iPod to see if any alerts appear.
Is this the same computer you normally sync the Nano with?

I want to clean my mac. what is best mac keeper or mac booster  or is there any recommended by Apple?

Neither. I would stay away from any such software. Apple does not make recommendations for any software except their own.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions About Mac Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.
Four outstanding sources of information on Mac maintenance are:
    1. OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
    2. Mac maintenance Quick Assist
    3. Maintaining Mac OS X
    4. Mac Maintenance Guide
    Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
    Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. Malware Protection
As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion, Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary. To assure proper protection, update your system software when Apple releases new OS X updates for your computer.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection:
    1. Mac Malware Guide.
    2. Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware
    3. Macintosh Virus Guide
For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
    Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
    Installing System Updates or Upgrades
Repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Update your backups in case an update goes bad.
    Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. You can never have too many backups. Don't rely on just one. Make several using different backup utilities. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
         1. Carbon Copy Cloner
         2. Get Backup
         3. Deja Vu
         4. SuperDuper!
         5. Synk Pro
         6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
    Final Suggestions
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.

Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Most if not all maintenance is for troubleshooting problems. If your computer is running OK, then there isn't really a thing you need to do except repair the hard drive and permissions before installing any new system updates.

  • Does VUDU come on Apple TV? If not, how do you recommend that Apple at it to the iTunes Store?

IS VUDU available on Apple TV?
If not, how do you recommend that Apple add it to the iTunes Store?

It is not listed in Apple's list of Apple TV apps…
    https://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
You would need to do something to an Apple TV that will get this post deleted, see if you can guess what that is.
You could just buy a device that actually supports the services you need…
https://www.roku.com - it is a channel that can be added to a Roku.
    http://www.vudu.com/setup_roku.html
Other media boxes also support Vudu (Chromecast, Xbox, Playstation, Android, WDTV… basically everyone who isn't Apple).
If you think Apple will add Vudu as an Apple TV channel ask them via the feedback form. Just bear in mind that Vudu directly competes with iTunes video sales & rentals.

  • What internet security do you recommend for apple products

What Internet security do you recommend for apple products

None.  The best security is to backup your data frequently, and using WPA2 encryption on wireless routers.    Otherwise basic good practices include:
    1. Do not download sites that suggest installing cleanup software.
    2. Do not do things that might slow your Mac down:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6921
    3. Do not install updates except directly from reputable vendors websites, and the Apple Mac Store.
    4. Do not follow instructions of popup windows or banner ads.
    5. Do not use peer2peer or torrent software.
    6. Do not open .scpt, .sct, .app attachments.
    7. If you use Windows on your Mac, the same security rules for Windows on a non-Apple machine apply as an Apple machine.

  • Recommendation to Apple for Recent Calls

Am I missing something or did the RECENTS not cover all of the calls the phone makes? It has a tab for All and Missed. I recommend that Apple make the tabs at the top not only note "all" and "missed" but add calls "incoming" and calls "outgoing." This way I can quickly look at all my incoming and outgoing calls separately. Because I have so many l am not sure if the numbers on my phone were received or calls made because they are all together. Am I not doing something right.

I hope that someone is still around..., my 2g iphone stopped registering my recent calls.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any idea of how to fix it?
    thanks

I'm still struggling with being able to sync ipad3 and iphone 4s to itunes after upgrading software to ios 6. I've gone through all the recommendations by Apple and suggestions from other forums and nothing seems to work. Help!!!!!

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • IPhone: Recommendation to Apple for a quick pause function for iPod

First of all, we love our new iPhone, as it has been a lifesaver and helps us efficiently use our time. However, there is one issue that I hope would get resolved: if I listen to music on the phone's iPod function while performing other tasks (type an email, browse the web, etc.), if someone interrupts me and I need to quickly pause the music, I have to 1) hit the home button, 2) hit the iPod button and then 3) hit the pause button on the currently playing song.
Instead of having to perform three steps, I recommend that Apple updates the software to have a "quick pause" button that would be placed at the top of the iPhone screen in the same way that one would see the green bar at the top of the screen while on a telephone call and performing other iPhone tasks. This would give users one quick and easy way to pause the music that is playing on the iPod!
    Alan

I like your idea for using the top button as a pause button.
Why don't you go ahead and submit it to the iPhone feedback page:

  • Where to send a recommendation to Apple for a change?

I've seen a link here somewhere that you can send a recommendation or "suggestion" for a change to Apple. Anyone know that link?
The blank areas above and below a TV show in 'wide screen' are WHITE which is very distracting! They were black in the 5th gen iPod video which is much more watchable!
    Thanks,

  • Can someone please recommend an Apple Display?

    Hi Guys,
I have a 24in iMac with a mini DVI port. I am looking for a secondary monitor to give me a bit more screen real estate but without a whole bunch of adaptors to enable the connection!
So could you please recommend something that will connect easily and works well with the iMac?
Thanks a lot for any advice!
    Cheers

Just get the new Apple LED Cinema Displays. They may be more expensive but the Mini DisplayPort plugs right in to the iMac without an adapter.
    Hope this helps.

  • Recommendations for Apple TV Speakers?

I've been using a Klipsch iFi as the speakers for my Apple TV. Great sound. But the dock assembly unexpectedly quit yesterday.
Anyone have recommendations for a speaker system to use with the ATV? The iFi had its own remote for controlling volume, which is nice since there doesn't seem to be any way of controlling movie volume with the supplied Apple remote.

there are three options as i see it.. so in order of quality
    1) *powered/computer speakers* is what you have.. you kinda plug everything into a subwoofer that is attached to left and right speaker.. you can also get surround sound version of these as well
    2) *all-in-one surround sound systems*.. are sold as a complete package and sometimes called "surround system in a box". usually have at the centre a dvd player that can decode the surround sound and the speaker attached to it... some are "3.1" and have left, centre and right speakers + a subwoofer.. most are "5.1" and have left, centre, right, left rear, left rear and a subwoofer (the subwoofer is the ".1").
actually some new ones just have a subwoofer and a strip of small speakers in an flat enclosure that get can be mounted on a wall just below the TV.. sometimes these will have the decoding done in the subwoofer sometimes the strip of speakers enclosure.

    3) AV Receiver.. "5.1" or "7.1" the receiver connects to the speakers that are bought separately.. you can pipe the video and audio from a many of devices through it to the speakers and to your TVs.. it's kind of a swiss army knife

a surround system can add a lot to the enjoyment of a movie since the sound can be use to mimic movement of things with sound from anywhere to anywhere in the room (e.g. the ham that shoot into B.O.B. from over your right shoulder in Monsters vs Aliens), adds atmosphere.. e.g. the echo of a large empty room or a wind going past your right ear etc.. all these thing are lost with a traditional two speaker stereo system.. also it's how the director intended the movie to be enjoyed.. i think it adds a lot..
