Recommend an SD Card reader,

I have been using a dazzle card reader, pretty old now and big, but it is easy recognised by my OSX.10.5, I have tried using a stick on-USB2 brought off ebay-just does not work? can you recommend a SD card reader for OSX 10.5?

There's a previous thread with many recommendations, I have the Sandisk Extreme Reader (USB2)that comes with a little stand, and it works 'awesome' with the MacPro and PC.

  • Recommendations for xd card reader

I'm a new Mac user and just recently discovered that I cannot simply insert my XD memory cards into my laptop.  Before I go spend money, I was wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a card reader that they've used with success?  I would really appreciate the help - thanks!

Card readers are extremely inexpense. They all seem to work just fine.

  • Please recommend a CF card reader for Mac

I have a iMac (Intel) desktop and also a Windows based PC. I use the newer Mac to process JPEG photos in Lightroom 3, but here's the catch: most of the time my older Sandisk ImageMate 8-in-1 CF reader does not show up in LR3 (I connect the USB plug directly to the back of the Mac's USB slot). It works just fine with the PC. So it may be a hardware problem and I am willing to invest in a new Mac compatible card reader. My Mac runs on OS X (Lion).
Can someone recommend a Mac OS X-compatible CF card reader? I'm getting desperate.

While it is highly probable that getting a new reader will fix your problem one thing in your post gives me pause. You say that most of the time it doesn't show up, but sometimes it does?
You would think that a comparability problem would be an either or situation. It either works or it doesn't. I would check out a few things first before buying a new reader.
First I'd try a different cable, even if this cable works OK on the PC. Second would be to use a differtn USB port on the Mac. Then I would open Image Capture and see if the reader shows up there. Finally open System Information (in te Utilities folder) and in the hardware section select USB with the card reader attached. See if it shows up in the devices.

  • Could anyone recommend a reliable card reader for my MacBook Pro please?

    Hi,
Looking for a reliable card reader for compact flash and SD cards for my MacBook Pro.  Would anyone be able to recommend one please?  Most reviews I've read only seem to mention Windows and I'm not sure whether they are Mac compatible.
    Many thanks, Karen

    Karen,
Hi, what year is you macbook pro?  Is it the Early 2008 one with the grey keyboard, or the newer ones with black keys?  If you have the grey keyboard macbook pro I use the Sandisk card reader:
For the newer MacBook Pro's a usb card reader works well in addition to the sd card reader built in the MacBook Pro.  They are making thunderbolt card readers now for a low price:http://computers.pricegrabber.com/flash-memory-readers-accessories/SmartDisk-THU NDERBOLT-SD-STICK-WRITER-USB/m16520521.html

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • USB Hub / External Card Reader recommendations?

    Afternoon,
I have recently purchased a late 2012 27" iMac and would like to add some peripherals.
I am looking for a USB 3.0 hub and a multi card reader.
I have seen lots of posts about USB hubs (the joys of a google search) that either arent recognised as 3.0 or are on American sites. (Am based in the UK).
I know there is a card reader on the back of the iMac, but only for SD and I would prefer to not have to keep turning the monitor round to reach it.  (I still have xD cards that I use).
Without being too picky, I dont want 'ugly' units. Dont want to make a beautiful machine look ugly when surrounded by lots of horrible looking external add-ons.
Does anyone have any recomendations of hubs / readers, or even ones to steer clear of?
    Thanks very much.
    Karen

    Thanks for trying but ...
No, I can't see the drive when booted up with Cmd R.
I don't have a USB hub to test on.
I'm just tried resetting the PRAM as you suggested.
    No change.
Any other ideas gratefully accepted, otherwise, I can book into the genius bar thingy - no idea if that will be of use.  I work in IT so I'm fairly handy though there are many mac specific commands & tricks I'm not aware of.

  • Card Reader not working for HP 20 All-in-One

I have an HP 20 All-in-One PC and have bought two All in one card readers that use the USB slots to connect with the PC. Neither work though which is very frustrating!
Nothing happens apart from the light comes on in the card reader.

    Hi again bardofely,
It is good to hear back from you again!
Since you are still not able to discover your USB card readers, I recommend following the steps in this document on Windows 8 Safe Mode. This should help to enable your system to recognize your card readers without any additional services or background programs.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Device removal error.....   The card reader ejects itself

Hello, I'm new to macs and purchased a Mac Mini a week ago. Things were going well until I needed to move pictures from a digital camera to my mac.
I purchased a GE 19 in 1 card reader which is built for mac os x. I hook it up to a usb port and try and look at some pictures. After a few seconds, the card reader ejects itself and I get the "device removal" error. The error will then continue to appear over and over again. When I try to eject the reader using by clicking eject, the reader ejects and only reappears a minute later and ejects itself again. I've tried using another usb port and I know for sure that its not the cable.
If I can't get any prompt answer here, I'm going to call the Genius bar tomorrow morning and ask about the problem. <Edited by Moderator>

More often than not, when a card reader or other similar device disconnects from the USB bus because it is drawing too much power. In a card reader, that would not unusually be triggered not by the card reader itself, but by the insertion of a card causing it to read the content and mount the volume on the Mac's desktop. Part of the problem is that while everything is invariably quoted as USB compatible, many such devices don't entirely comply with the USB standard, resulting in conflicts or load demands which may be borderline, or worse.
You may be able to get more reliable performance from your reader by disconnecting other USB devices when you are trying to use it, or by using it with a powered USB hub. Occasionally, borderline problems can be temporarily resolved by connecting the device to a different port, if necessary switching devices around. Alternatively, it may be that in an attempt to produce a device with the greatest flexibility in terms of media compatibility, they have compromised on components.
I would generally recommend a card reader designed for the specific card type you need. These are typically far more reliable. If you need to use different types of card media, then be prepared to spent on a well established brand with a reputation in this sector of the market, such as SanDisk.

  • Why can't I use/build an SD card reader for iPhone?

I have searched and searched for an SD card reader for iPhone. Apple offers the camera connection kit for iPad but for some reason they have made it incompatible with iPhone. This doesn't make a whole lot of since to me unless they are trying to drive users to buy an iPad. So far I have only found one SD card reader that claims to work on iPhone: http://www.zoommediaplus.com/index.html . If they have actually made it work with iPhone and the app is in the App Store then Apple must allow apps to transffer data from SD cards. If so I can make one myself and build the hardware to go with it since the Apple SD card reader doesn't work on iPhone.
I guess my main questions are:
Does Apple allow SD Card readers for iPhone?
         if not:
              Why don't they?
Can anyone tell me where it is documented that you can not use SD Cart readers with iPhone?
How does ZoomMediaPlus get their app in the App Store if it isn't allowed?
         if they do:
Why aren't their more SD Card readers for iPhone?
Why doesn't Apple's lightning SD Card read work with iPhone?

Of course they forbid it.  You realize that an iPhone 6+ owner cannot use the Apple Lightning SD Card Reader, don't you?  We know the support for their own SD Card Reader is built into iOS 8 because it works with iPads.  Therefore, Apple intentionally turned the support OFF for iPhones.
and it appears no one else has bothered to attempt to produce one
No, Apple forbids any third parties from producing one.  They produce them for iPads but they cannot work on iPhones, because Apple chooses not to permit such functionality (i.e., they forbid it).  Third parties produce such adapters for Android, so obviously they would want to do the same for iOS so they could sell more.
You're recommendation for AirStash is uninformed.  I've tried it and found it to be a clunky time-consuming workaround if all you want to do is import some photos from an SD card.  Using Photos in iOS to import photos is a far more elegant solution - an Apple solution that just works (if you purchased an iPad).
If it bothers you that iPhones do not work with Apple's own Lightning SD Card Reader, then I suggest you leave feedback instead of attacking those who point it out:

  • HP GS60 - SD Card Reader Not functioning or visible in My Computer

    HP GS60 Product Number FS184UA
    Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (32 bit)
    Serial number (S/N):     2CE835J6V5
I'm an avid photographer.  I have run Windows 7 since shortly after it came out.   I have been using the reader regularly since Nov 2009.    (actually, I was using it earlier under Vista as well). In December 2011 the internal SD Card Reader on the HP G60-120US ceased to function.  I insert a SDHC card and it does not show up in my computer.
Right or wrong I've taken the following actions to try and resolve this issue:
    1) Reinstalled Realtek USB 2.0 drivers from the HP site.
2.) Reflashed the BIOS.  It was already at the current version F.54 A - I reflashed it anyway.
3). Deleted all devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and allowed them to readd automatically.
The re-add of the USB controllers went well enough although it did not solve the problem.
Confirmed that my SDHC cards are good by both using multiple cards in the slot and, when that didn't work, I inserted the cards back into the camera and connected the cards to the computer via a USB cable to the camera.  That worked fine (not desirable as it's so much slower).
Confirmed that all my standard USB ports worked fine by attaching other devices to it.  They work fine.
What might be relevant is that I do not see anything under disk drives that would look similar to this:
    Generic SD/MMC
Should there be? I'm not certain.
If there should be, how can I get it readded back in?
Currently, the only item under disk drives is the ATA drive where the o/s resides.
What is the proper device related entry for the SD card reader for the HP GS60-120US that should be present in the Device Manager?
I cannot tie the failure to any particular software change.  While I used the card reader often I do not use it daily.  A windows update could have come in, disturbed things but I might not have become aware of the impact to the card reader even if it was an update that did it.

    Hi @rlstockwell
I understand that you are looking for some help in how to use the SD reader on your notebook. I am happy to help with this.

  • Is it possible to install a 3G SIM card reader to Satellite M645-S4070

    Hi there!
I have Satellite M645-S4070 laptop with serial no. YA153766K.
It is WiMAX ready and also has a SIM card slot but does not have a SIM card reader.
I took a slight look inside and it does have something that has "3G" written on it.
Would it be possible to install a SIM card reader to my laptop?
I know, that I could also use a 3G USB modem but it would be a lot more convenient to get connection without additional devices around my laptop.
    Thanks!
    Taros

    Hi
As far as I know there are models which supports 3G or Intel 4G WiMAX
    Your unit supports 4G (WiMAX)
Im not quite sure if its possible to upgrade this unit with an 3G module but if it would be possible, this needs to be done by Toshiba authorized service technician.
By the way: your notebook belongs to the Toshiba US series and was released for the US market therefore I recommend checking the Toshiba US forum:

  • B590 - SD media card reader part number?

    Hi
Please can someone confirm the part number of the SD card reader and where I can purchase one for my B590 as it didn't come with one and there is a void in the casing where there should be one.
    I'm in the UK.
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi Brungle,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Looking at page 62 of the B590 HMM, the part number for the Card Reader (I/O Board) is 90000234.
     - Link to picture
AFAIK, having a void on the card reader slot means the I/O Board has no card reader (most likely on selected B590 models). To verify this, may I know the machine type model of your B590 system (eg. MBX3PUK)?
If you're planning on replacing the card reader, you can opt to:
    1. Replace it with this item (I recommend you contact the seller first for best compatibility)
    2. Use a USB card reader (cheaper alternative)

  • Vivitar Media card reader. Read only?

    Hello
Everyone I have a Vivitar Media card reader and every card I put in shows up read only? Any ideas?

Never reformat a camera's memory card using your Mac — always reformat the card or delete pictures from it using your camera's menu commands, not the Mac. A card that's been formatted on a Mac or had pictures added to or deleted from it by a Mac is likely to be found unusable by many cameras. Reformatting in the camera usually resolves that problem.
As for your card being seen as read-only by the Mac, that's not a drawback if you adhere to the practices I've recommended above. But if you want to use an SD card for something other than uploading photos from your camera to your Mac, then it's a pain, and the problem ha been reported here a number of times before. For some people, inserting the card very fast into the SD slot has remedied the problem. Others have found that they need to push the card slightly upward, downward or to one side or the other while inserting it, rather than just pushing it straight in. Still others have found that certain cards' locking sliders bind against the side of the slot and get pushed into the locked (read-only) position as the card is inserted. You can experiment with all these ideas and see what happens, but in some cases just switching to a different brand of card has been the answer. And while it's irksome to contemplate resorting to a USB card reader when you have what ought to be a perfectly good SD reader built into your computer, for some people that has been preferable to relying on an unreliable SD slot.

  • New Card Reader-no photos in library

    Hi All,
I just imported some pictures via a card reader, the icon images are in iPhoto, but when I click them it is telling me they cannot be found and a ? shows up. Now I know they were imported because I clicked import, and they are also showing under "Last Import".
Unfortunately, my card reader deletes everything once imported (I set it up that way, which I think I should not have done). Please tell me how to find my pictures or what is going on!
    Thanks
    Jeff

I did not have "copy imported items" checked. And can't find "referenced library".
a referenced library (that option is not checked)
You have a referenced library - which is not recommended for many reasons one being that importing photos becomes more complex
Since you told iPhoto not to copy the photos it did not - it referenced them and to use them they must always remain where it referenced them - unfortunately that is the memory card and you have deleted them from there so unless something like media recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - will recover them they are gone
I suggest that you reconsider the decision you made to not copy your photos to the iPhoto library or learn how to use that option correctly knowing that you are totally responsible for managing the photos and keeping them in their original location - referenced libraries are difficult for knowledgeable, experienced users, they are pretty much impossible for others
