Recommend educational resources -- Oracle 10g

Hello all,
we are planning to use Oracle 10g (and/or 11g) on an enterprise level, however in the light of our intentions, I would like to ask you to recommend reliable educational resources (books, manuals, tutorials, blogs, etc.) in order to find out more information regarding database model, design, administration, GUI tools, etc.
Thank you for your time. Your help is highly appreciated.

  • Recommended books for Oracle 10g

I'm new to this group, so my apologies in advance if this is not the appropriate group for this question. If it is not, please steer me in the right direction. Thanks!
Here's my situation: I'm currently a Microsoft SQL Server developer and have been for about 6 years, so I'm fairly conversant with SQL. Our company is in the process of purchasing an application that runs under Oracle 10g, and I need to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can about 1) being the Oracle DBA for our (small) company, and 2) developing in Oracle SQL.
Are there any specific books some of you would recommend for my particular situation (beginning level Oracle user, intermediate/advanced in SQL)? Any and all advice/suggestions/help will be gratefully accepted.
    Thanks in advance --
    Carl

First thing I would recommend is going in the OTN and download the 2 day dba article
and the top 20 Oracle 10g features

  • Oracle 10g on Windows XP Home Edition?

I was reading the installation guide and in Sofware Requirements section XP Home Edition is not listed just XP Professional.
XP Professional is recommended or mandatory, Oracle 10g does not work on XP Home Edition?

Oracle only certifies the database on the Professional edition, not the Home edition of Windows XP. If you are just installing Oracle for personal education, most things will most likely work just fine on the Home Edition.

  • Oracle 10G Non-Network install - OEM will not start when on the LAN.

    Greetings,
Got through a non-networked 10G Enterprise installation OK; I chose to create the orcl schema, connected to it through various utilities, added new tablespace, and all was well. I also checked my Host Name by pinging it in DOS, it showed me the IP address of the MS loopback adapter which is what I was expecting.
Once I connected the same machine to the LAN (and internet) and re-booted, for some reason the Host Name was now assigned the dynamic IP address of the LAN and not LAN2 (which is the loopback adapter that is assigned a static local IP address). It did this even though I had already added an entry in the /etc/hosts file that explicitly assigns a static IP address to the Host Name (as recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions). I also could not get the OEM to launch a webpage, run and connect to the orcl database after the re-boot; I am wondering if this is related to the IP address assigned to Host Name changing; maybe the Oracle agent can no longer resolve the URL for some reason?
In the end I find that the only way to insure I can have a working Oracle environment and be on an active network at the same time, is to bring up the Oracle environment on a standalone system first, and once Oracle is running connect the system to the network. Is there no way to automate this process?
The format of the hosts file entry recommended by the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions is as follows:
    ===========================================================
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
    where:
IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered for the loopback adapter.
hostname is the name of the computer.
domainname is the name of the domain.
    For example:
    10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
    ==========================================================
In my case since I am not part of a Windows domain (but am part of a Windows Workgroup), I added an entry in the /etc/host file that looks like the following:
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    # For example:
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.110.250 IBM-6AB1330E158
==> Note that I did not add the domain name to the entry I created since I am not part of a domain, I also used the format I found in the etc/hosts file which is:
    IP_address hostname.domainname
    - not -
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
Which is the format recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions; this does leave me wondering which format is correct...
Thanks in Advance for any help,
    ADG13

I have not. I am hoping someone (maybe even from Oracle support) will step up and officially tell us we are either right or wrong in the way we are approaching this. From the research I have done on the internet it sounds like this should work, you should be able to have Oracle starting and running fine whether you boot connected to the LAN or not, assuming you have created the MS loopback adapter, assigned it a static IP, and changed the hostname entry in etc/hosts file as part of the 10G WinXP recommended pre-installation instructions.
And yet I find I have to start Oracle when I am not connected to the LAN or the services will not start correctly. If this is a "feature" then hopefully someone will tell us and maybe give us a workaround or give us an idea if this will be addressed in a future release. Having said that and in fairness to the Oracle product; being a developer I have other products installed on my machine that have special networking setup needs also, and in my case this could be exasperating or even possibly causing this Oracle problem I am having. To be specific I have software for 2 different VPNs installed so I can tunnel into 2 private networks. One of these VPNs require me to make use of a DNS Suffix (as shown below) which might be contributing to my problems, not sure. I also have VMWare installed which uses it own network adapters when it is running, so you can see how things could get a little hairy... at any rate, there is my 2 cents worth (or is that 5 cents? : )

  • How to Install oracle 10g in a gues OS?

    Hello All,
I have installed Oracle Linus 5 using the template.
Since Oracle Linux Template does not have the X server, how would one install Oracle 10g using GUI.
Should i go for the 'un attended' installation ?
Also, can i use the same 10201_database_linux32.zip bundle that i use for RH4 ?
But the inside oraparam.ini, it does not 've any details about the oracle linux( only Linux=redhat-3,SuSE-9,redhat-4,UnitedLinux-1.0,asianux-1,asianux-2)
    TIA,
    JJ

I would recommend downloading the Oracle 10g template for Oracle VM from eDelivery. This automatically installs and configures Oracle 10g for you. This is a much simpler configuration path, as the OS and Oracle are pre-configured to work under Oracle VM. There are plenty of [Oracle VM Templates|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/vm/templates.html] to chose from!
Otherwise, I would recommend downloading and installing Oracle 10g 10.2.0.4 which includes support for installing on Oracle Enterprise Linux. You can install 10.2.0.1, but you would need to tweak some files first to fool the installer into thinking you're running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

  • Regarding T Bar in Oracle 10g Reports

    Hi,
We have the requirement to generate line graph report to meet the following requirement.
The graph must be draw 4 horizontal lines.
In these 4 lines, two lines displayed in the top and two lines in the bottom.
The bottom two horizontal lines should be drawn along with vertical lines(T bars ) for      every x values.
This graph is actually a combination graph which have both horizontal lines and T Bars.
We have been recommended to use Oracle 10G Report builder to build this kind of report.
We tried all the option available in the reporting tool, we could not able to represent T bars.
Is it possible to generate report with T bars using Oracle 10G
    reporting tool.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Oracle 10g R2 - Metadata Issue With Version Controlled Resources

We are trying to utilize the Oracle 10g R2 feature that allows user-defined metadata to be attached to XML DB resources. However, we are encountering errors when we try to append/attach metadata to a version-controlled resource (VCR). The following steps were followed:
    1. Register a new schema to be used for metadata (XMLSCHEMA.registerSchema).
    2. Add a new resource to to the XML DB and make it version controlled (DBMS_XDB.createResource and DBMS_XDB_VERSION.makeVersioned).
    3. Checkout the newly created version-controlled resource (DBMS_XDB_VERSION.checkout)
    4. Add metadata to the version-controlled resource (DBMS_XDB.appendResourceMetadata)
However, after step 4, the errors shown below are encountered:
    ========================================================
    begin
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [qmxStrCopy: INLOB 2], [], [], [],
    ORA-06512: at "XDB.DBMS_XDB", line 890
    ORA-06512: at line 2
    ========================================================
The steps followed for adding metadata to a resource were taken from Chapter 26 of the "Oracle XML DB Developer's Guide 10G Release 2" (http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14259/xdb_repos_meta.htm#sthref2302).
Is is possible to append and maintain metadata to an XML DB version controlled resource (VCR)? If so, what are the correct steps to do this? Note that if this is tried with a resource that is not version controlled, then no errors are encountered.
    Thanks,
    Steve

It appears that this issue has been solved in the next release of the database

  • Note 830576 - Parameter recommendations for Oracle 10g

    hi all DBA experts.
I am not good familiar with Oracle database while i read a Note 830576 - Parameter recommendations for Oracle 10g. in which SAP General Recommendation:
You should delete obsolete initialization parameters from the profile.
To determine which obsolete parameters are currently set, proceed as follows:
    SQL> SELECT NAME FROM V$OBSOLETE_PARAMETER WHERE ISSPECIFIED = 'TRUE';
when i execute above command then result is no rows selected
while there are many parameters in above SAP Note which are already obsolete and not set in initSID.ora file.
for exp.  the parameter OPTIMIZER_INDEX_COST_ADJ  is showing
    #### OPTIMIZER MODE
    #optimizer_index_cost_adj = 10
as you know that this parameter is very important regarding System Performance.
now please guide me . I have to set these parameter or no need while there is not showing any parameters against obsolete command.
    waiting you valuable reply.

    hi both,
thanks for knowledge sharing with me other SDN users,
    Dear Orkun,
Ok. At this stage, I can recommend you that apply what they have suggested,
in the message. So, you already did a part of it by configuring
    Oracle parameters, already.

  • Oracle 10g as Resource in IDM 5.5

    Hi,
We started adding Oracel 10g Databases to our IDM-Resources.
When provisioning users into Oracle 10g Resource we get the following Exception:
    com.waveset.util.WavesetException:
Error trying to update Oracle user 'G2814' ORA-30041:
Cannot grant quota on the tablespace
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-30041:
Cannot grant quota on the tablespace Since we already removed the oracleTempTSQuota-Attribute I assume that the adapter overwrites null values internally.
Any hints how to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance...
Oracle-Docs:ORA-30041: Cannot grant quota on the tablespace
Cause: User tried to grant quota on an undo or temporary tablespaceIDM_Technical_Reference_2005Q3M1 refernces Oracle 10g as supported resource

There is no need to give quota on temporary tablespace, because you will never create objects on a temporary tablespace
It is a wrong assumption to think that your temporary space usage will be limited by a quota.
The fact that you can "grant" quota on a temporary tablespace is rather a bug, which is fixed in 10gR2
Re: Cannot grant quota on tablespace
This bug is not fixed in IDM 6.0 SP1.

  • Oracle 10g database as Resource manager and heuristic transaction decision

    Hi,
I have read in documents about distributed tarnsaction that resource manager like oracle databasecthat are involved in distributed transaction can take heuristic decision(unilateral decision) and can either rollback or commit the transaction associated with itself without having confirmation from the transaction manager.
I want to know how a resource manager take this unilateral decision and can we set this as parameter either in resource manager or in application server.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Following are some links to documents.
    Handling Heuristic Completions
    http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs81/ConsoleHelp/jta.html
A heuristic completion (or heuristic decision) occurs when a resource makes a unilateral decision during the completion stage of a distributed transaction to commit or rollback updates. This can leave distributed data in an indeterminate state. Network failures or resource timeouts are possible causes for heuristic completion. In the event of an heuristic completion, one of the following heuristic outcome exceptions may be thrown:
HeuristicRollback—one resource participating in a transaction decided to autonomously rollback its work, even though it agreed to prepare itself and wait for a commit decision. If the Transaction Manager decided to commit the transaction, the resource's heuristic rollback decision was incorrect, and might lead to an inconsistent outcome since other branches of the transaction were committed.
HeuristicCommit—one resource participating in a transaction decided to autonomously commit its work, even though it agreed to prepare itself and wait for a commit decision. If the Transaction Manager decided to rollback the transaction, the resource's heuristic commit decision was incorrect, and might lead to an inconsistent outcome since other branches of the transaction were rolled back.
HeuristicMixed—the Transaction Manager is aware that a transaction resulted in a mixed outcome, where some participating resources committed and some rolled back. The underlying cause was most likely heuristic rollback or heuristic commit decisions made by one or more of the participating resources.
    2. Understanding EJB Transaction
    http://www2.sys-con.com/itsg/virtualcd/Java/archives/0504/tyagi/index.html
    Unilateral Decisions
The transaction manager allows certain heuristic or speculative decisions to be made based on the state of all participating resources in a transaction and the underlying two-phase commit protocol. A heuristic decision occurs when one of the resources in the transaction unilaterally decides to commit or roll back the transaction without permission from the transaction manager
    3. Oracle® Containers for J2EE
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28958.pdf
    Heuristics
To achieve consensus, two-phase commit is a blocking protocol. This means that, if a coordinator fails before delivering the final phase messages, the participants must remain blocked, holding onto resources. Modern transaction systems add heuristics to two-phase commit, which allows such participants to make unilateral decisions about whether they will commit or rollback. If a participant makes a choice that turns out to be different from the one taken by other participants, then non-atomic behavior occurs.
I got this problem while trying to do a distributed J2EE tarnsaction with two XA (one MQ and other Oracle 10g database XA) and one non-xa (oracle 10g database). According to above docs a resource manager can decide tarnsaction final state unilaterally and that can result in unatomic transaction.
Do oracle also make such decision and if yes then on what ground it takes decision? Can we change this according to our requirement either always rollback/commit anywhere as parameter setting?
    Thanks

The latter will expose you to native code bugs in OCI that

  • (again) oracle 10g client and oracle 10g express in one computer

hi again, sorry if this question looks like a double post to you.
Well this is quite embarassing yet still make some headache for me. I have my office PC installed with Oracle 10g client using admin component option, for connecting some application with database on remote server. Now, after I have developed some basic map using Oracle 10g Express on my home PC, I want to test it in my office network. But everytime I tried to install Oracle Express, it web interface will working normally while all other aplication can no longer connected with remote server from the client. If I remove Oracle Express, all client connection will working again as if nothing happened. I already created Microsoft LoopBack connection using IP 10.10.10.10, edit TNSNAMES.ORA, etc that could possibly helpful but nothing fixed. Strangely, if I install Oracle 10g Database version, all connection to remote server working again, and map application also working. But this kind of installation takes up all my PC resources (grrrr!). Any more suggestion?
    best regards
    net2surfin

I'm sorry if the information not accurate, but the client connection made by application which try to connect is simply "not resolved" and show no error code/number at all. I'll try to connect from sqlplus though, maybe the error number will be known from this way.
About 10.10.10.10 tcp loopback, I got this work around from here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14316/reqs.htm#BABGCEAI
in the Ora Database Preinstallation requirement, where it states like this:
+16.In the Properties dialog box, click Use the following IP address and do the following:+
a.IP Address: Enter a non-routable IP for the loopback adapter. Oracle recommends the following non-routable addresses:
    +■192.168.x.x (x is any value between 0 and 255)+
+■10.10.10.10+ <---- this is the value suggested that I've been used in my home PC
    b.Subnet mask: Enter 255.255.255.0.
c.Record the values you entered, which you will need later in this procedure.
    d.Leave all other fields empty.
    e.Click OK.
I'll try to remove the loopback later and see the ORA environment, to see the result. In the mean time, all suggestions is highly appreciated.
    thank you n best regards

  • Couldn't copy large amount of data from enterprise DB to Oracle 10g

    Hi,
I am using i-batis to copy data from enterprise DB to oracle and viceversa.

I have latest oracle 10g jdbc drivers.
remember, i could copy any amount of data from oracle to EDB but not otherway around.
PLease let me know if you have come across this issue, any recommendation is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    CK.

    Hi,
I finally remembered how I solved this issue previously.
The jdbc driver isn't able to directly call the insert with a column xml_type. The solution I was using was to build a wrapper function in plSQL.
Here it is (for insert but I suppose tha update will be the same)
create or replace procedure insertXML(file_no_in in number, program_no_in in varchar2, ost_XML_in in clob, btl_XML_in in clob) is
    begin
    insert into AQAOST_FILES (file_no,program_no,ost_xml,btl_xml) values(file_no_in, program_no_in, xmltype(ost_XML_in), xmltype(btl_XML_in));
    end insertXML;
here is the sqlmap file I used
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <!DOCTYPE sqlMap
    PUBLIC "-//ibatis.apache.org//DTD SQL Map 2.0//EN"
    <sqlMap>
