Recommend firewall appliance to use with AEBS?

My ISP provides me only with a bridge modem - no firewall, etc. I'd like to install a hardware firewall between my AEBS and the modem.
Any recommendations for something effective, reliable, and easy to admin?
Also, should I worry about things like Deep Packet Inspection? This is just a home network, but I'd like to err on the secure side...

FWIW, I am currently using the following combination and it is working quite well for me:
Internet Modem > Cisco RVS4000 > 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), where ">" represents an Ethernet connection.
In this configuration, my AEBSn is bridged and the Cisco is providing both the router and hardware firewall services.

You can't run iMovie 11 on a PPC G5 running the old OS 10.3 Panther - which is what you say you have.

Apple used to sell the Apple Hi-Fi which I thought complimented the Express nicely.
They're both white -- I'll give you that.
What I was thinking of more when I said similar in design was the way that the AirPort Express simply hangs on a wall, no desk or shelf shape required, with the bare minimum of cables. By the same token, I'd like to have a small amp and/or speakers that could hang/be mounted on the wall and deliver music into the room via AirTunes -- without an octopus of cables and without having to dedicate an entire tabletop to it (audio should be heard and not seen.)
Well, that would be great, but there are way too many variations of audio equipment for people with all kinds of tastes to make for a worthwhile market. Whereas I might think it's silly to have more than a 100W stereo amp others would consider that pathetic.
If Apple could pack a 100W+ amp into something that hangs off a power outlet, more power to them. I was thinking more along the lines of 5-10W, or just enough to power some wall mounted speakers. That said, [these speakers|http://store.apple.com/us/product/TU902VC/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1NA&mco=Mjc4M jI1MQ] look somewhat promising. It looks like they could be powered off the USB on the AEX, so at least no power brick. Unfortunately, they don't look geared to wall mounting, and who knows what the audio cable connections look like (because the ad deceptively photoshopped them out of the picture.)
The Express's low power analog output, plus optical, not to mention an Ethernet port, router, bridge, a/b/g/n wireless access point and USB printer port in such a tiny package with a self-contained power supply is a such a generalist's piece of connectivity I can't imagine asking for anything more.
It is a pretty impressive package. But, I'm still asking for GigE in the next rev.

  • What is the best ADSL modem to use with AEBS in the UK?

I'm currently using the Netgear DG834G with it's wireless functionality switched off, and my AEBS (gigabit) is set up as a bridge.
When I've tried to resolve various problems such as getting iChat AV working I've got the impression that I might have fewer problems if I let the AEBS do the routing, and simply had an ADSL modem connected to it (rather than a modem/router combo).
What do other people use in the UK, and what success do you have with Skype, iChat etc?
Is there a better way to configure my DG834G so it only acts as a modem? I don't have much technical knowledge in this area, though I have been through the Netgear control panel and sorted out fixed IP addresses.
In some respects, ie. internet browsing, streaming movie trailers on the Apple TV, OS X software updates, all perform perfectly. From that point of view, it seems that there cannot be too much wrong?
A couple of 'by the ways': I also have an Airport Express configured in bridge mode to use with my iPhone and 802.11g MacBook, so that I can keep the Airport Extreme (gigabit) set to work exclusively on 802.11n for maximum performance to the Apple TV. The Extreme and Express are using different frequencies.
I've just ordered the new Mac Pro, which has two Ethernet ports. Is there a way I can put these to good use, for example having a standard network separate from a gigabit network using jumbo frames? I'm sure this is too much to put in one thread, but in a way it's probably best to cover everything together!

I use the Linksys ADSL2MUE - which I managed to buy for £12.
I configured it in bridged mode - leaving the Apple Extreme do all the firewall and DHCP stuff.
It's not pretty but does the job.

  • Recommended color space to use with my D50

    Hi -
I'm pretty new to Mac and I'm now finding time to work with digital photos taken with my Nikon D50. Having read up on some things, I realize Mac OS and iPhoto can match the color space of the imported photos as an attempt to keep colors consistent between camera, computer, and eventually the printer. I was wondering what is a recommended color space to use when shooting. Nikon offers 3 choices - IIIa ( sRGB with a boost to green ), Ia ( sRGB ) and II ( Adobe RGB ). I believe their IIIa is my default and I have not changed it. I've noticed, however, that when I took a picture of my daughter in her prom dress outdoors in natural sunlight, it rendered it's magenta color as more red than magenta. Would Adobe RGB be better ? I read some articles here on color and I believe somewhere in the article it said the Adobe RGB color space has a broader color gamut than sRGB.
    Any opinions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

I don't have a Nikon (I use Sony's) and I find my cameras output matches up well with sRGB. iPhoto seems to use sRGB as well. Adobe RGB comes up very saturated, too saturated for my taste. When I use Adobe. I set Adobe to sRGB as well.
Magenta is a tough color and many fabrics reflect infrared and/or uv band and some camera sensors can pick that up. You may find the same effect with flowers.
Gamut depends more on where you plan to output the images. A broader gamut is not always the best thing for displays but may work well for printing. Personally I find sRGB works well for me.

  • Can anyone recommend and mouse to use with Aperture?

    Hi ,
I have been using the Apple Mighty mouse with my iMac and am looking for a replacement. I have a lot of trouble using the right click on the mouse and am fed-up with it.
I want something bluetooth that will not take up one of my USB ports. I have set the third button to expose all windows as I frequently switch between applications and I like this function with the big screen I have.
Aperture and Photoshop are my main applications so I’m looking for something that is going integrate with those well. I want to be able to zoom and scroll around pictures with ease.
    Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am using a Logitech VX Revolution, actually a wireless notebook mouse but I have small hands, so prefer the smaller size over a regular size.
Apart from the size (which is an individual feature and there is a normal sized version called MX Revolution) it should fit most of your needs. It has six buttons a four way scroll function and a zoom slider. Using the Steermouse 3rd party mouse driver (Logitech's one is known to cause problems) you can individually set all buttons and functions of the mouse systemwide and for specific applications. Speed and accuracy is more than sufficient for my needs.
Only thing is that it uses a proprietary wireless dongle, so you still lose one of your USB ports.
Microsoft also produces good mice (imho their hardware is a lot better than their software , even some with real BT support (they still come with a dongle but you don't have to use it). However, from what I've heard, sometimes it can be a little bit tricky to get them to work with Mac OS X.
    Bye,
    Carsten

  • Is lightdm recommended over gdm now (used with GNOME3)

I am a Ubuntu user intending to switch over to ArchLinux. In Ubuntu, lightdm is used over gdm. But in the Arch docs for GNOME, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … ning_GNOME, it says
For the best desktop integration, login manager GDM is recommended. Other login managers (a.k.a. display managers) such as SLiM can be used in place of GDM. Check out the wiki article on display managers to learn how desktop environments are started.
Is that still the case? Or should I use lightdm which is newer already. Is there a problem with "desktop integration" if I use LightDM?

Stock packages are generally considered better than AUR packages. But you are free to use whatever you want when you know what you are doing.
I have had issues with lightDM in the past and quit on it. I don't understand what lightDM brings that GDM doesn't?
I use LXDM and it has been pretty good all this time.
I think what lightdm brings to the table is the easier way to create frontends so it can adapt better to different environments.
GDM is gtk only and has some hard depencies because of that but with lightdm you should be able to have a simpler core and a frontend with the technology you want, for example QT, QML, GTK, HTML, etc.

  • Seeking a DVR Recommendation that I can use with FCP 5!!

I am looking to purchase a DVR, not a Tivo!! I was looking for someone who is currently using a DVR, that has Firewire out, that they are using in FCP to edit content to send to DVD. I am open to any any all suggestions!!
As always thanks in advance for your the courtesy of your to read and reply to my Post,
    Sebastian

Motion 2.0 was paired with FCP 5. Final Cut Studio 1 included both. When Apple switched to Intel processors, they released FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 as an Intel compatible "cross grade". FCS2 had FCP 6 and Motion 3. FCS3 is Motion 4 and FCP 7.

  • Recommended HD Camcorder to use with non intel based mac?

I have been looking for an HD camcorder that is compatible with my mac. I was leaning towards the Canon Vixia HG20 but don't want to invest in something that will not work with my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will the Canon Vixia HG20 work with my system? I don't have an Intel based mac.
    _Here are my specs_
    System: OSX 10.5.8
Processor: Dual 1.8 GHz Power PC G5
    Memory: 3 GB DDR SDRAM
    Software: Imovie 8.0

I went out and got the Canon HV30 camcorder and imovie is not recognizing it... anyone know if i need to do anything special to get it working?

  • ADSL Modem Compatible with AEBS

I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend an ADSL modem compatible with AEBS. The NetGear ADSL 2+ Ethernet Modem advertised in the Online Store is very poorly rated.

Pretty much any ADSL modem that provides a regular internet connection with an RJ-45 cable would work with the AEBSn. More importantly you should ensure that the ADSL modem you purchase is compatible with your ISP ADSL connection. In most cases, the ISP provides a "custom" version of a ADSL retail modem with firmware modified for ISP tech support.

  • What harddrives are approved for use with ix4-200d?

    Hi,
I found an article on the Lenovo site for the process of swapping out all 4 hard drives in an ix4-200d, but what I can't find is an article showing the list of approved/recommended hard drives for use with the ix4-200d.  Can anyone point me to such an article?
My ix4-200d has a 4x500GB configuration (Seagate ST3500412AS drives).  I'd like to swap them for either 2TB or 3TB drives, so I can have one place to store all my raw video, which right now is spread out over three different devices.  Also, if you have any advice or gotchas to look out for when I swap out the drives, I'd love to hear you on that matter.
    Thanks,
    William

    Hello vitorpereira
In regards to the ix4-200d and ix4-200d CE, Iomega/LenovoEMC never created an approved list of drives.  When a disk failure occured the disk should be replacing with a matching drive if at all possible.
When it is not possible to use a matching disk model, a similar disk should be used.  This would be a disk with the same manufacturer, capacity and rotation speed.
For the ix4-200d specifically, the units shipped with either a 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP (5900rpm) Hepburn disks.  ST3500412AS, ST31000520AS, ST32000542AS
That is what the ix4-200d units were qualified to use.  Outside of those three specific drive models you will be dealing with hypothetically compatible disk options.
The recommendations that Wesley made previously are correct.  You should go though the ix4-300d list find a model that is similar to the stock drive or at least within the capacity limits of the device model.  (ix4--200d is 2TB disks, ix4-200dce is 3TB disks)
If a different disk models are used in either version of the ix4-200d, it is highly recommended that all disks be eventually replaced with the new model of disk for RAID stability.  to do this, the Capacity Upgrade Guide should be followed.

  • Firewall, sync issues with AEBS

    Setup:
    - DSL modem with an AEBS (gigabit .n) acting as router, NAT/DHCP, Firewall etc... running 5GHz
    - AEBS (UFO style .g) wired to the main router, acting as a bridge for any 2.4GHz devices
    - iMac CD wired to the main router
    - MacBook C2D wirelessly connecting to the main (.n) router.
When wirelessly connected to the .g AEBS (acting as a bridge), the Apple TV connects, shows up in iTunes on both Macs, can access the internet and properly syncs with the Macs.
When wirelessly connected to the main .n AEBS, the Apple TV connects, shows up in iTunes on both Macs and can access the internet but cannot sync. Instead the following error is returned:
"The Apple TV "Apple TV" is not responding
Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689".
It's obviously not the computer in this case but the router. Has anyone had success using the AEBS .n as in my setup and been able to sync a Mac with the ATV. I've tried different settings but with no success and as all devices are internal, behind my router, I can't explain this behaviour.
DSL modem -> Airport Extreme .n
-> Airport Extreme .g (UFO) ethernet to the .n
Apple TV connects to both routers and can connect to the internet as well.
    Syncing however isn't.

I'm running a 40GB ATV via my Black Macbook and a 1TB Time Capsule. I'm having the same intermittent sync problem noted above; same error statement regarding my ATV "not responding," check my firewall, etc with one twist: My ATV always shows up nice and strong in the device list. Similar to one of the postings above, it seems to sync only when it wants to (as I type this.. it's syncing, despite my best efforts to get it to do so over the last 30 minutes). I gave lincris's solution a shot and I'm still getting an no response error on a random basis. Does anybody have any new ideas on this? I'm not suffering to much, as it seems to sync on its own from time to time, but I'd love to make this process a little more predictable.

  • Experience with router/firewall appliance?

    Hi,
I'm searching for a router/firewall appliance to run as a virtual machine in front of a larger number of VMs.
    What I need:
    * L2TP for remote user access
    * Ethernet/L2 VPN for hosting ActiveDirectory servers for customers
So far I've tested Vyatta, but I don't want to use it becuase the WebUI is not included in the free license (and their licensning is a bit inflexible). I've also tested pfSense, but I dislike the fact that their L2TP server doesn't support DNS suffix, which I kind of need to get all Microsoft SMB shares working nicely.
Any recommendations? I prefer if it's open source/free or relativley affordable (less than $400).

You should probably download and try Halon's https://solutionexchange.vmware.com/store/products/halon-vsr-virtual-security-router 'cause it supports both L2 tunnels and search domain over VPN. There's a free version.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

I've been using "Burn" for years and it has been the only DVD burning software I have ever used for the mac. I have never needed to look at other apps. Unless you want something that has more bells and whistles such as Roxio's "Toast" : http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html
There are thousands of quality free apps out there for the mac that are not part of the App Store. All you have to do is read reviews online, do a little search, the Apple forums are full of recommendations from experienced users that have been here for years...
