...recommend good analog /digital converter....

...can anyone who has a lot of experience with analog /digital converters recommend a good unit. It seems that CANOPUS ADVC 300($569) or the ADVC 110($249) or ADS TECHNOLOGIES PYRO A/V ($139)---Who's who? and What's what? are they both high quality? (the ADVC 300 will stabilize and clean up artifacting as the others don't seem to). I will have a video commercial archiving DVD to produce with some of the material on VHS cassettes and some on DVD, so the quality will vary. anyone with experience with this please reply..Thanks

I have a ADVC300 that is used to digitize archived Hi8 material.
The ADVC 300 really does do a good job cleaning up timing errors as well as giving you some control over chroma and saturation when dealing with analog formats. The Picture Controller 300 application that comes with the box gives you the ability to tweek the parameters of the image but, if you have no clue about the technical elements of the video imaging, the manual will be frustratingly spare in explaining the effect the parameters on picture quality.
While not as capable as a full frame TBC, for the money and convenience, it is hard to beat. The other devices you mention are no better than your basic DV camera used to convert analog to digital.
Good luck.

  • Image fluctuates through analog digital converter

I have a videonics mx-1 mixer/switcher going into my analog/digital converter. on the vhs side of the switcher and the monitors, the video is perfect. While it is on the computer, after about 20 seconds, the screen fluctuates with distortion at the top 1/4th. The image is fine on the monitors. It only happens through the converter. It starts when I switch cameras after about 20 seconds. It stops when I switch to another camera but then starts again after another 20 seconds. The image records that way. We use to record our productions vhs but we now use the imovie and idvd. I need to stop the fluctuations. It seems to be in the switcher but it doesn't fluctuate on the monitors. Only fluctuates through the converter. But when I switch it stops. I know, I said that. I don't want to buy a switcher if my switcher works well. Not sure if it the converter either. I tried the RCA and the video jacks. Either way I get the same conclusion. Can anyone help? My converter and computer are new. The switcher is from 1994.

    Hi Alan
    Scart are a bit tricky.
If You got a SCART/RCA plug with three RCA connector on it's back ONLY.
My bet is that You have one video in TO YOUR VCR not the way back (and
that You got it with Your Camera ?? at least I did so).
You need a SCART plug with a Switch on it marked IN/OUT.
and then it is the VCR - mine has two SCART "ports" only one of them has
the ability to communicate both ways.
The Canopus ADVC 55 is a one way device. From VCR to Mac - not the other
    way.
    And finishing:
You or Your Mac can't remote control the VCR. You need to press play on it
or on it's remote to start to deliver to the Canopus and to iMovie.
Hopfully this gave some useful ideas. Self using Canopus ADVC 300 and
    very happy with this one.

  • Dvdxdv vs analog/digital converter

    Aloha all,
I'm new to mac and FCE. The camera I already own is a sony dvd. I already know all the bad stuff and am looking for a replacement.
What I would like to know is which will give me better results. Finalizing the dvd and using dvdxdv or using the analog to digital converter that I also already have? Or is there yet a better way that I have missed?
    Mahalo!

I use both an A-D Converter and software (usually Toast 7) to convert DVDs.
On balance i think there are likely to be less problems with footage from the converter but the overwhelming reason to use it is that it is so much quicker.
It does it in real time and you can select EXACTLY what you want to convert.
Using software usually takes longer and you have to convert a lot of material you may not want.

  • Analogic/Digital converter ...

    Hello.
I've a PCI-MIO-16E-1 card with 2 analog outputs, and I want to use both in the same time (in multisamples mode for each one), but I can't.
So, is it possible to "split" or to share the converter between the two outputs ? Or to do "one point for DACOUT 0, one point for DACOUT 1, one point for DACOUT 0 etc ...
    Thanks.

    Hi Lacertae,
Unfortunately, the PCI-MIO-16E-1 (PCI-6070E) does not allow you to generate two individual analog signals. There are two factors that make controlling two output channels impossible.
First, E-series boards rely on the DAQ-STC chip to provide the timing for the board. In the E-series devices, only one Analog Output update clock exists to control the timing of the analog outputs. What this means is that when you start the output on Channel 0, the update clock for both channels is started. There is not a second update clock available to control the start of the second channel independently.
Second, there is a limitation in the NI-DAQ drivers that only allow you to configure one output group. Therefore you can only specify properties for one group
and all channels that you wish to use must be in that one group.
With that said, you can program your analog data generation to appear as though there are two analog signals generated independently. This is described in a knowledge base document on our website:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/862567530005F09E8625676F00454A3D?OpenDocument
The only way to truely achieve independent control of two analog output signals is to split up the two output channels between two separate E-series boards.
    Thanks for contacting NI,

  • Analog-Digital Converter not visible as Source

    Hello Forum,
I run a ADVC 110 Converter from Grass Valley (Canopus) to convert my old VHS to digital videos. It is connected via Firewire and works fine on my W8.1 computer. The converter is visible in Windows Movie Maker and works, but I can not make it visible and running in the new Adobe Premiere Elements 13.
Any Ideas?  I tryed of course all the sources and options, I am usualy not so bad with computers.
    thank you.

  • Analog to Digital Converter-- What's A Good Product For My System?

What would be a good analog to digital converter for Final Cut Express HD 3.5 on a Mac OSX 10.4 system? I've used a Canopus on a MacPro with Final Cut Pro before and liked it, but wasn't sure what would be a good product for my macbook. I've looked at the Canopus advc-110 and 55 but am not clear on the difference and if it would work with what I have.

The ADVC-55 is capture only. It includes composite & s-video inputs and stereo audio inputs. Firewire output.
The ADVC-110 is bidirectional (meaning you can both capture and output through it - this is a very good way to monitor your video during production as you can see the actual quality on a monitor/TV rather than just your computer screen, which has limited capability to show you the actual video quality.) It includes composite & s-video inputs and outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output.
The ADVC-300 is also bidirectional and includes composite, s-video and component video i/o (D1 connector) inputs & outputs; stereo audio inputs & outputs; Firewire input & output; and software that enables you to tweak its video settings. Helpful in cleaning up particularly bad analog videos.
I've used these things for years and they all work great. I do not believe there is any difference in the internal conversion hardware ... The primary differences are support for one-way vs. bidirectional conversion; input/output connectors; and the software that comes with the ADVC-300.
If you have basically clean analog video, any of these units will be fine. You can use any analog source (VHS deck, camcorder, DVD player, etc.) and would typically use iMovie or Final Cut Express to capture your video on a Mac.

  • Analog to Digital Converter boxes

Does anyone think Apple will ever fix iMovie to restore usage of many analog to digital converter boxes that were broken by iMovie 5?
I have a SONY DVMC-DA1 firewire unit and wish I could use it again in iMovie. Does anyone know what the exact component is that they left out or changed that would cause this problem? I'm just trying to understand.

  • Premiere Pro 1.5: Best analog to digital converter for BNC?

Recently I've been looking for an external analog to digital converter (that connects via firewire)that will work with Premiere Pro 1.5 for capturing uncompressed digital video from any source, whether it be BNC composite from a U-Matic to S-VHS via S-Video (either DIN or Y/C BNC) to Betacam SP BNC Component.  It would also be nice if it could import digital sources (i.e. DVCPRO 50/Digital Betacam) as well by SDI.
I've looked at a few by AJA or Blackmagic, but I'm not sure if they would work with Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP SP3.
Does anyone know of a good converter?

I have NO IDEA if it will work with everything you list, but do some reading at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters

How exactly are you performing 'Analog to Digital'???
Grabbing image using camera OR performing data acquisition using DAQ card OR some other way????

Anyone have any thoughts or tips on using this analog to digital converter with a VCR and CS6? Has anyone used one of these before?

You can also test if you get a better result by applying set up or otherwise in switch 2.
BTW - how old are the VHS tapes and what do they look like before digitising them?
    Are they PALor NTSC originally?
(The box wont do a great job of converting them either so stick to what they are ).

  • Which is the best Analog to Digital Converter

    Hey everyone,
Im new to this movie making digital world.  I have been using imovie for a while and looking to upgrade to FCP.  Before I spend the money, just a few questions hoping someone would know the answers.
1:  Can I use idvd to burn my movies with FCP?
2:  Im need an analog to digital converter, but not sure which one to get.  I have VHS, Hi8, mini DV, etc...     Which converter is best with mac, specifically with FCP?
3: Does FCP work well with an external harddrive?
    Thanks...

    1. Yes
    2. Canopus and DataVideo are popular but some camcorders have a built in A-D converter. Note that Mini-DV works without needing a converter. Just plug in your camera with FireWire.
    3. Yes

  • Do I even need an analog to digital converter for old VHS?

I'm just trying the most cost effective way to transfer all of my old VHS & HI-8 material to a digital format for better preservation. Since, why I do not know, PE doesnt allow for analog capture, I need a converter like Dazzle to get my analog source to digital. Or do I?? Can I not just use Windows Movie Maker to capture then import into PE?  Doesnt my capture card do convert?? I have my VCR hooked up via S-video to the card. Is the card not the same thing as an external converter? I just want to know the best way so I dont waste my time only to have to go back and redo everything. Thanx yall

Thanx y'all. Thats where I'm a bit confused. You mentioned "quality DV-AVI". I'm under the assumption that when I capture an analog signal that I set at 720x480 is a "quality DV-AVI". After I have captured and rendered to an .avi file I then import that into PE. Is that what you are meaning? Or is that an inferior quality video file? The capture card I have is a Legacy capture card that came with Pinnacle Studio ver 9. Pinnacle is a great intro level editor, but it sucks because it's slow, unstable and captures out of sync audio which I have to go in and manually sync. I shouldnt have to do that. I'll spend $100-$200 if thats what I have to do to get the results I want. I'm not looking for HD quality here. I simply want to capture all my old analog media, edit it, and burn to DVD and keep on my HD to preserve it all. I want it to be the same quality as it appears on its original medium.I also want to continue to edit and burn stuff using my Mini DV camera as well. I just want an editor thats above intro level, but not as complex as Premieire Pro. I feel that PE will do the job well. My capture card has S-video, firewire & composite inputs. Is my card not what I'm needing??  Or, do I need an analog to digital converter to get the analog material into a raw digital format thats the same quality as the original?
To help in my endeavors i recently upgraded and built anew PC so that I would have no problems, seeing that video editing does tax a computers resources. My new build is a Quad core 4 gb of RAM system. So my computer power should not be an issue for home editing and what not.

  • Capturing footage using an analogue to digital converter

    Hi
I've recently edited a 2 hour mutli-camera show from Digi Beta. We captured
the footage via firewire, cut the programme and mastered it to DVD for
duplication. We've now been asked to online the programme for broadcast.
Presumably this should be a simple task:
    * capture the footage from Digi Beta with an analogue to digital
    converter
    * Export the current programmes as an EDL into a DigiBeta (PAL)
    version.
    * Render anything necessary
    * Import the online audio
    * Output to DigiBeta with the Digital to analogue converter.
Please can someone recommend a suitable D-A converter? We were thinking of
getting an AJA Kona LH/ LHe.
Also, is there anything else we may have missed in the process / potential
    pitfalls?
We usually offline on FCP 5.1.2 and give and EDL to a post-production
facility but figure doing it ourselves will be a cheaper option.
    Current kit spec:
    Mac OS X version 10.4.8
    Processor 4 x 2.5 GHz Power PC G5
    Memory 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    Thanks

just on the semantics of it ... analogue doesn't come into it
DigiBeta is digital, so is FCP. you need an I/O card.
the Kona LHe from AJA is a very good choice, as are the Decklink offerings from Blackmagic Design.
the method would be to create an "offline" version of your project with the "online" codec/resolution setting of your choice. you do this using FCP's "File > Media Manager" tool. next you would use Batch Capture to capture the media needed to recreate your sequence at that codec/resolution (using the DigiBeta masters via the I/O card to your Mac). then you'd output the upresed "online" version back to Digibeta (again going via the card)
potential pitfalls ... media manager has a long history of being hopeless
    chck this post: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1075398
(although apple claims media manager is feeling much better now)
heres a ink to a tutorial on the process ... not new but still relevant

  • Connecting Digital Converter to Firewire Port

I have an analog to digital converter (Pyro A/V Link) that I have been using to preview my video from Final Cut Pro on my television. I now want to set this up to convert some analog tapes and now my computer just randomly doesn't identify my converter when it is plugged into my firewire port. Now, when I plug it in to the computer and go to system profiler, I get a message that says it cannot read my firewire drives at all. When I unplug it, the profiler identifies my external hard drive. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?
Note: The only change from before is I upgraded to the new Mac operating system, installed my Ram, and installed a newer version of Final Cut.
Thank you to the great person that may help me...I NEED IT!

I just switched the cables between the hard drive and the converter and now they are working. Now, just to figure out how to get this beta player footage to my computer...its a never ending battle.
I don't know if switching the cables worked or if it was something else...I guess I'll never know.
    Thank you!
