Recommend me a good wireless card

I currently use a DWL-122 (prism2_usb) adapter for wlan and I am getting tired of the driver problems: ndiswrapper (any version) causes a kernel panic and wlan-ng26 does not support WPA (i tried, and it's not supported by the WPA supplicant either).
Can someone recommend me a good PCI wireless card? Preferably one with good drivers and below $60.
It would be for a desktop of course, but the only reason why I use wireless is because the dog likes to gnaw on cat5 cables.

I got myself a MSI PC54G3 II card two weeks ago, for less than 20 EUR. Works fine.
I'd avoid Draft-N hardware (those with three antennas) and really make sure about the chipset. I think especially D-Link is infamous for shipping like four completely different hardware/chipset revisions under one and the same model name.

  • Good wireless cards for older Mac Pros

I have a Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz at work that we are trying to get online wirelessly. A couple of months ago, we bought a Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-N USB Adaptor, which was working fine until a recent update was performed. Since then, the computer crashes almost immediately if the wireless adaptor is plugged in, but runs fine when it is taken out. I am curious if anyone else has run into a similar problem when using a wireless adaptor. I also wanted to know if anyone had a recommendation for a different, reliable wireless card for an older Mac Pro.
    Thanks in advance.

I have almost the exact same situation.
Same system, a d-link wua 1340 usb wireless adaptor.
Worked fine for several weeks or so until i updated to snow leopard.
Now frequent system crashes, grey screen and the box that tells me to use the power button to shut down.
I tried going back to 10.5 and still the same problem.

  • Good wireless card for a B&W G4?

I'm looking to connect my B&W to my home network (one AE router, one PB, HP printer), an am curious what the best card might be?
    Any ideas?

  • Recommendation for third party wireless card

I have a client with a dual-core G5. They didn't purchase it with Airport but now they want wireless access.
Unfortunately it looks like you can't install a Extreme card after the fact as you could with the previous PowerMacs. They would have to bring the Mac into an authorized service center to have them install it.
Does anyone know of a PCI based solution? Am I going to have a problem since it uses PCI-express?
    Thanks,
    Mitch

The link pulls up a 404 page...drats. When going through the front door on Virgin site, I found their Broadband2Go, but it’s not Mac compatible. Only PC (drats again).
Like the OP, I’d love to find a “pay as you go” broadband solution for the MBP. I travel quite a bit for work, and most of the time can wrap the hotel’s internet charge into the client contract. Still, there are times the trips are on my dime, so it would be great to have a PAYG solution.

  • Wireless card loopy?

    Hello,
    I just bought a T430s with Windows 8.
Anyways, wireless seems to be going a little loopy for me. I installed a mobile SIM card and it works fine for the most part.
The problem though since I've installed that SIM card for the mobile network, is that the wireless adapter no longer picks up wireless networks.
I hit up the wireless connections tab on the taskbar, and on WI-FI networks, it usually says there's no networks in range, even though there are networks in range.
It resolves itself, only if I restart the PC, and only sometimes.  I usually have to manually reset the adapter by disabling and enabling it in Windows for it to finally pick up the networks.
Physically switching it on and off (the button on the right) doesn't work, neither does using a function command.
    Any ideas what's happening?
    Thanks

First to start that laptop only came with Windows 7 driver support and doesn't indicate any Linux driver support. If you need more Linux support you might have to go to the Linux distro support support site that matches your Linux O/S version that would have more resources to help you to do what your doing and only list drivers for Windows 7.

  • Recommendations on hardware Raid 10 card

Would like it to, but only planning on using 8 drives to start. since each SFF-8087 is 4 drives, would like one with 6 ports but could do 2 or 4 if there's a huge price difference.

We're looking to replace our old SAN with an onboard card running Raid 10  and having multiple  SFF-8087.  We're planning on putting it in a Norco 24 drive case and slowly expanding. Anyone have recommendations on a good hardware card with RAM?  Also will I be able to add additional drives to the raid10 in future?

    Hello
    > I am not happy with my integrated Realtek wireless card. Connection quality is not good.
I cant imagine that you are not satisfied with the connection quality
I also use Satellite A660 for October 2010 and everything is great! :) This is a wonderful piece of hardware without any problems and great build quality.
The WLAN connectivity is good and the same with other notebooks (I also have Realtek WLAN card). I only noticed that WLAN connection is a little bit slower in Eco mode so I have disabled the WLAN power saving function in Eco mode and now the problem is solved. Furthermore I have installed newest WLAN driver of offical Toshiba page..
So I would recommend disabling the WLAN power saving and updating the WLAN driver.
Of course you can use an external USB adapter but I think internal WLAN is more comfortable so I would try it with driver update firstly. ;)

  • Recommended PCMCIA wireless cards for Linux 2.4.20?

I am interested in any suggestions for Cisco (or other!) PCMCIA IEEE 802.11b wireless cards that are compatible with Linux 2.4.20, i.e., an upgrade of the Linux kernel is a last option!
The source files for the driver must also be available. It is preferable if the cards are IEEE 802.11g/n ready also, but this is not essential.
    Thanks for any replies!

Good luck to you. While it's slowly getting better in the 2.6 kernel line..
I've always just used the win32 driver with the NDIS wrapper in Linux. While it's not my favorite option, it works.
As for driver sources, if you do find an open source wifi driver for a major chipset like Atheros, let us all know.. :)

  • Recommended wireless card for G3?

I have a Powerbook GS series running OS 10.2 and am looking to buy a wireless card. Any suggestions? I went to the local Mac store and the guy there suggested a card that was about $80. Is this reasonable? Thanks for your help.

    Tyanlee,
To make your wireless experience as pleasant as possible, I would suggest this:
    1. Download and install the Mac OS X Update Combo 10.2.8:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdatecombo10_28.html
    2. Download and install AirPort 3.1.1:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=70176
After installing both updates, you can then buy one of the wireless PC cards below and it will be fully compatible with AirPort software.
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/aria_extreme.html
    http://www.macsense.com/product/broadband/WPE800.html
    http://www.buffalotech.com/wireless/products/airstation/WLICBG54A.html
I recommend downloading the standalone updates instead of using your OSX's Software Update. If you have only a slow modem connection, possibly a friend can download them or your local Mac store may burn a CD for you for a few dollars.
If you are running OSX 10.2.0 > 10.2.5, you cannot use AirPort software, but you do have other options. If you are not interested in updating to 10.2.8 (possibly you are already there), please reply.

  • Recommendations for Wireless Card?

I am thinking of getting a new wireless card for my laptop because my wireless connection is very weak at home. We all use a router, however my sister in the room next to me has flawless connection on her Windows laptop. It was suggested to me to look into getting a networking card that matches my Linksys router for stronger wireless connection, but I was hoping for some more advice. I do not know where to look first or how to start searching.

Some WiFi issues are known to be fixed simply by upgrading to 10.4.11. To upgrade to 10.4.11, follow my FAQ*:

  • Can anyone recommend a good wireless router for both Mac and PC?

Hello! I am looking to purchase a wireless router, and was told that Linksys in general (and a specific model in particular) isn't Mac-friendly. I need a nuetral router that works well with my MacBook and my Dell laptop (which I need to purchase a wireless card for). I also have a PC but I can just connect it via Ethernet cable.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
    MacBook 1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

hi - Linksys wireless routers work fine with macs (i
    have one)...
perhaps the reason you heard they're not mac friendly
is because the software they give you to configure
the router only runs under wintel.... but you really
    don't need that software...
one can have total control over the setup simply by
firing up a web browser (on a machine either directly
connected to the router via ethernet or w/ a wireless
    connection) and going to http://192.168.1.1/
that'll get you talking directly to the router...
i'm actually not aware of any routers that really
don't work well w/ macs... so i think you can just
choose based on features & price...
    cheers
    p.s. Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I currently am trying to set up a linksys router. Unfortunately, I dont know what to do once i am at the router's config page to make it start working. Can you help me out? thanks.

  • Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0 Wireless Card

Can anyone recommend a feasible solution to the Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR card? I can only find it at Mac-Pro.com and they want a whopping $217 for it - ridiculous. I assume the cost is so high because no one else has them, but alternatively, I may just go with a Wireless 802.11g Compact Wireless USB Adapter and see if it connects.
Anyone had any luck finding this particular Airport card under $100 or tried alternative means to get a good connection with their wireless router on a PowerMac G5 (Late 2005)?

The Airport/Bluetooth upgrade kit that you're looking at from Mac-Pro.com is only sold as a replacement part, which is why it's so expensive. Same reason why the replacement video cards are also so expensive.
Welovemacs.com also has them, but the price is pretty much the same since you need the Airport/Bluetooth card, the runway card, and the standoffs (all provided together in the kit).
There isn't any selection in PCIe wireless cards for Macs, that I'm aware of. MacWireless.com has a USB stick that'll work and offers 802.11n speeds.

  • Changing Wireless card for a GE60

Hi guys, New here and i need your help I have an MSI GE60 laptop and im a big fan of it, my issue is that the Wireless card an Intel Centrino 135 is Pitiful to say the least for my needs (i work with 5ghz alot) so i need to upgrade the card my friend recommended an Intel Centrino 2605 it seem good and offers great speed. but i soon as i swap the card and install the drivers im hit by some sort of software lock which don't let me use it (apparently Intel don;t like you swapping out the cards" so my question is there a way i can get this working because i would hate to lose this laptop due to a small issue like this :( a program i can run, some code i could run anything would be a great help!
    Thanks in advanced !!
    I can't give links to stuff :(
so ill just ask you to google the laptop Number if you need it :P

MSI does not 'whitelist' anything as far as we are aware. This is included in our FAQ section.
Are you 100% certain that the card is good? Have you tried it in another laptop to ensure it works there?
Yep my friend has a HP Business laptop with the same card and he swapped it and got great speeds from it ive just done a full restore of my laptop and it still seems like its wont work ive ran out of ideas. i tried his wireless card from his Laptop and it was the same error it looks like its installed and ready to rock but theres some sort of barrier stopping it :/
