Recommend me an ExpressCard/34 SD adapter

I'd like to buy an ExpressCard/34 SD/memory card adapter to use with my new 17" MBP.
Preferably it'll read multiple formats (SD, XD, etc).
I see this one: http://bit.ly/drvWBS
on eBay. It says it's for Toshiba laptops, but I assume it'll work with a MBP since it's ExpressCard/34?
Also do any of them actually sit flush with MBP case once inserted?
Thanks

The card you've linked would probably work fine, but if I were buying, I would look for a card made and sold by Mac-oriented companies that I knew I could count on to support me if I had any trouble with the product. Here's one:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/MMRE34RW/
Sonnet and OWC have both been in the Mac business for many years and are completely dependable. I haven't used this card, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. OWC is happy to ship overseas, though I don't know what the shipping cost might be for this. If it proves to be too high, look for a Mac-centric vendor in the UK and buy what they recommend.
Something to be aware of with respect to ExpressCards is that some of them can interfere with system sleep. For someone who needs a card reader and has no other ExpressCard devices, it would obviously be desirable to be able to leave the reader in the ExpressCard slot all the time. But at least a couple of posters here have reported that when they did so, their MBPs either wouldn't sleep or wouldn't stay asleep, and the problem could only be remedied by ejecting the reader from the slot. It didn't matter whether or not there was a card in the reader. Before you buy a reader, it might be worth checking with its manufacturer to find out whether other users have identified this as a problem with it.

  • Dynex FireWire 800 ExpressCard Adapter...

I purchased a Dynex FireWire 800 ExpressCard.  My laptop acknowedges the card and it is visible in Devise Manager, however, it does not reccognize anything plugged into the ExpressCard.
The card is self powered but does have and optional 12v/2a DC plug which I am guessing is used for any device plugged into the card that does not provide it's own power.  The power adapter does not come with the card and there is no documentation that provides recommendations to the kind of power adapter to get.
I am connecting self powered devices to the ExpressCard and since I have verified I have the most current OS (Vista & all SPs) and drivers, yet Device Manager does not recognize anything other than the card, my guess is that it is a defective card.
Is there anything thing else I should check before returning the card for an exchange?
    Thanks,
    Zbowdawg

Vista installs the drivers automatically when I first inserted the card...  I did take it back and just exchanged it for another.  The new one has the same issue.  So even though the two firewire cables I have work on my other computers, I am going to try a new cable, and then if that doesn't work, I am going to take the card back for a refund.
I hope a new cable works because I have purchased Dynex products in the past with no issues.

  • CF Adapter ExpressCard causing kernel panic

I purchased a ExpressCard Compact Flash Adapter. This is a generic adapter which
seems to be made by JMicron with Model DR25. There seems to be several branded versions of this DR25 model.
JMicron create compliant cards to the standard (I am presuming it is the card I have)
    http://www.expresscard.org/web/do/pub/product/view?id=111
    System Profiler shows
Vendor ID: 0x197b (which is JMicron)
Device ID: 0x2368 (Does this hex value correspond with product number from above URL)
Anyway, I mention the compliance above, as in the first hour of use cause 3 kernel panics. I have attached the latest panic report as a result. I have seen at least one other report on the web of problems with a variant of this card.
Is there a known hardware issue with this card? Either way, the kernel should not panic. Is this issue know/being looked at by Apple? I can provide more information if needed.
This card actually works quite well when it works, and I can read and write at 40MB/sec to my Sandisk Extreme IV.
BTW, the panics occurred in several different scenarios. The first was when browsing in coverflow mode. The panic thread was quicklookd. The second was when powered off the card, and the third was when pulling out the card, having unmounted the CF card.

  • Expresscard/34 Esta Adapters Crash OS X -- long-standing issue.

    Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008) that has exhibited this issue from the onset of using an Expresscard/34 esata adapter: Upon inserting the Esata adapter, I will get a Kernel Panic (the one whree I get multiple languages saying I must hold down the power button to shut down).
I thought this was a driver issue, but this has been present from 1.5 Leopard all the way to the current 10.6.4, and has always been present. I have tried different brands / makes of expresscard/34 adapters, 1-port, 2-port, different chipsets -- but the problem always persists. And, of course, I have tried disk repair, etc to make sure the mac is running correctly.
The problem overall, however, is not fully consistent: upon plugging in the esata adapter, a number of times it will boot up the drives just fine, whereas others it will crash immediately. If the drives boot up successfully, it will never crash afterwards; it seems to be an initialization / startup issue with esata adapter cards (again, this isn't limited to one chipset, or brand, or model). Likewise, I have used different esata hubs, with different chipsets...and this doesn't seem to be the root of the problem, either; at this point the issue may indeed point to the Mac itself.
At this point, I'm not sure what to try. I've gone through years worth of OS X updates, patiently sent crash reports upon all the crashes, with descriptions -- but with no solution ever offered or integrated. My AppleCare warranty expires March 17, 2011...so if I need to do some returning, etc -- I feel like it should be done pretty soon. This Macbook Pro in particular has had the logic board and monitor already re-conditioned due to manufacturer defects (faulty NVIDIA chip, and the monitor issue). Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

  • External HD dock recommendations for esata backup

I know owc and other sites have many different ones available. Looking for recommendations.
Will be for a early 2008 mbp 17in non unibody. Will be purchasing sonnett express card/34 esata adaptor for esata interface. Single HD port. HD compatiblity to 1tb prefered.
    Thanks in advance.

Be extremely careful with expresscard adapters and MacBook Pros. I have a MacBook Pro 2007 and three different eSATA expresscard adapters:
OWC Slim ExpressCard to eSATA Adapter. T
APIOTEK EXTREME Dual eSATA SATA I/II Express Card 34 Adapter with the latest Silicon Image 3132 Drivers
    OWC ExpressCard/34 eSATA SATA I/II ExpressCard/34 Adapter
None of these work on my MacBook Pro 2009. The card is recognized, the hard drive mounts, and reads from it. However after writing for 5-10 minutes. The hard drive is corrupted and I have te re-nitialize the hard drive.
Exact same Mac OS 10.6.7, same card and same three different hard drives enclosures (OWC RAID and Non-RAID, and Hitachi): No problem on my MacBook Pro 2007.
There are many notes in xlr8yourmac about hard drive file corruption.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/OSXeSATA_PMreports.html
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/express34cardreports.html#storytop
There are also several notes on macintouch
I have talked with Apple and they are unaware of these issues.
So be very careful when using expresscard adapters and depend them to be reliable with hard drives. I have given up and use Firewire 800. Unfortunately, Apple has not taken the time to debug this and admit they have a problem.
Make sure you extensively test this before any actual use. It might take a few reads and writes to exibit the file corruption.

  • Hooking Up LCD TV Using mini DP to HDMI adapter ?

I am wondeirng if the Mini DP to HDMI adapters will work for my application as I have searched a few MFG. websites for the details but it seem all will only work fully (audio + video) with a LCD TV with a HDMI chip V1.3 or above. A LCD TV with a HDMI chip below V1.3 will get you only video.
My macbook pro supports audio though the Mini DP I know this for sure.
I cannot find the version of HDMI on my TV it is a Toshiba 42hl196 made in 2006. But I am betting it is older than V1.3.
I was trying to get away with only one cable so the Mini DP to HDMI adapter is the way I am wanting to go.
Can anyone tell me what version HDMI chip is in my Toshiba 42hl196?
Also can anyone recommend a Mini DP to HDMI adapter that would work for my application? Or am I stuck buying two cables like a Mini DP to VGA - connect to TV then run component audio (W/ stereo adapter) out of headset output on Macbook to TV?
This is what is listed under HDMI in my TV's manual:
    Suggested formats; 1080i, 480p, 480i, 720p
HDMI Audi; 2 channel L-PCM 32/44.1/48 Khz sampeling freaq. 16/20/24 bits per sample and Dolby Digital

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er
if your tv says hdmi audio it has hdmi audio (which it does) get this anyway since you're trying to make this connection and make sure you set your sound to the hdmi audio.

  • S-Video Adapter?

Hello, I recently became curious about ways to watch and record TV onto my older (2007) imac. I also am interested in maybe connecting my xbox 360 and playing games on my mac's screen. I ddi some research and found numerous ways to watch and record television, but I would like to know, are any of these products (namely ATI's All in Wonder USB or Elgato's products) any good for gaming? That would be a major breaker for me if the video was found to be slow or laggy. So I guess my question is that are any of these good for S-Video adaptions? Or is there something else that anyone could recommend, like just a S-Video adapter that was easy to use, but still gave decent quality and speed. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

  • L430 miniDP to HDMI adapter (w audio)

Can you recommend a miniDP to HDMI F adapter that works with sound on L430? I recently got one from Startech through Amazon, but it does not stream audio to my TV.
I checked some reviews in Amazon, and it looks as if it supports only audio conversion from mini display port to HDMI1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00310EEO4/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1#productDetail...
I'm running Windows 7, and in the playback devices I have the laptop's speaker and three times "Digital Audio (HDMI)" devices that are always unplugged even with the cable connected to the TV.
Anything that ships to the EU should suffice.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You shouldn't have a problem with your current cable, it's practically the same as the others and capable of transferring sound.
Maybe you should check either the setup of the vga drivers (part of them is the HD sound driver for the display port) or the setup of your tv connection.
Unless of course the cable is faulty, it should do the trick...

  • Which adapter plug  in World Travel Adapter Kit is right for Argentina?

My father in law is off to Argentina with his PowerBook in tow. We know it can handle the voltage down there but I don't know which world adapter plug he needs as it's not listed as one of the choices in the World Travel Adapter Kit. Nothing for South America is listed in the kit, for that matter. Any ideas?
    Thanks much,
    Jake

    Jake,
Check out this site for the type of connector and voltage used in Argentina (and everywhere else for that matter).
    http://kropla.com/electric2.htm
It is the "Australian" type that he needs.
If he hasn't already bought Apple's adapter kit I'd recommend he just buy a travel adapter in Argentina, or in the Airport departure lounge on the way out - they only cost a couple of bucks and will work just fine. When I moved from Canada to the UK nearly two years ago I thought the Apple kit was overpriced - spent £2 on the relevant travel adapter that I'm still using.
    Good luck,
    Gareth

  • Ethernet to USB Adapter Issues

When using the ethernet to USB adapter on the Macbook Air I am getting a red 'not connected' followed by an amber 'searching for ip address' (something along those lines). It keeps flicking back and forth between those two statuses. Once in awhile it will sucessfully connect but it will soon kick itself off the network and start filcking between them again. I am a university student and the University IT team are saying there is nothing wrong with the network so it must be an issue with my leptop. One of the IT guys said there could be an issue with the adapter itself but considering its a few weeks old I fail to agree with this.
    Anyone have any idead?
Thanks, PS I am connecting through DHCP

Apple recommends to connect the USB Ethernet adapter before starting your Mac.

  • Satellite P10-804: AC adapter makes loud noises

The power supply is periodically making terrible noises.
Can it be replaced with a non Toshiba power adaptor ?
If yes, is there anything I need to know ?

Looks like an AC adaptor would be faulty or maybe its only a broken cable.
However, you should not use an AC adaptor which malfunctions. Its too risky
So I would recommend using an original Toshiba AC adapter. In such case you are always on the safe side.
You could use the PA3290U-1ACA AC Adapter 120W with 19V DC output
