Recommend me an external AP

Hi,
We currently run approx. 200 1142 AP’s managed by a couple of WLC’s (version 6). These are all in internal locations. We would now like to cover external areas and are looking for a simple external AP to deploy, ideally the AP will support 802.11 a,g,n. The external areas are the open spaces between campus buildings
We don’t want anything too fancy i.e. we don’t need CleanAir technology or 3G/4G offload.
Any recommendations?
Cheers

Dylan,
How large of an area are you looking to cover?  If you're just looking to cover a samll area right off of the building you could look into the 1310, which on the WLC acts as an AP, but it's outdoor rated.
If you need to cover a large area, like the parking lots, you may need to look into the 1552 AP.
Downside to the 1310, is it's only 2.4 b/g, the 1552 is a/b/g/n.
Alternately you could use the 1262 with some LMR to extend the antenna outside the building, again this would be for an area near the building.
HTH,
Steve

  • Recommend a good external DVD drive for Mac?

can anyone recommend a good external rewritable DVD drive for my EMac? i want something that will work with iDVD of course... thanks in advance.

LaCie is one. The Macally 500BC Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure with a separate Pioneer S-Drive is another viable option.
I personally use multiple ADS Tech 1394 Pyro FW Enclosures with a Pioneer 110D S-Drive as well as a few ext. FW HD's and they all work well on mult. G4 systems (completely interchangeable via FW 400).
This link may help you to build your own S-Drive if you wish:

  • Recommendations?  On External Hard Drive w/ firewire

Can anybody recommend a good External HD using firewire?

I would also be one to recommend LaCie Hard drives. I have three LaCie's hooked up to my eMac now (120GB,250GB,and 350GB). The 120GB LaCie hard drive has been running almost everyday (14 hours a day), for almost four years now ... with no problems outside of a loose firewire outlet on the drive that just needed to be re-soldered back in place.
Sometimes you can find great deals on LaCie hard drives on eBay!

  • Could someone recommend a good external hard drive?

Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
    1TB storage. Thanks!

LaCie and G-Technology offers superior hard drives (at a premium). They are pre-formatted for Macs out-of-the-box but you can format them to WIndows easily. They have FireWire ports (most of LaCie offerings and all of G-Technology) which is good on Macs and they also have USB 2 ports for Windows. Those drives are of good quality and will last a long time. G-Technology drives are mostly aluminium just like the material made for the Mac mini so it looks great together.

  • Recommend A Wireless External HDD?

Can anybody recommend a wireless external hdd for imac that works well with apple products such as new macbookpro and new imacs? I know that appletalk as far as I am aware was discontinued and has become more generalised into bonjour but I am worried about wireless conection to connection being able to talk fluently (computer speak) to each other over a wireless home network. Can anyone please recommend an external HDD which they know that supports apple and has in the past fast and fluently.
    Thanks .

Thanks so much didn't realise they had already solved this problem by this product . I'm going to get one.

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • Can anyone recommend a reliable external backup product that is not super slow?

I need a reliable external backup drive to store thousands of commercial photography projects that continue to add up over time. I've been using WD MyBook drives in 1 & 2 TB sizes and just purchased a Seagate 5TB drive. It is very slow on my system and seems to slow down my MAC. I have 16GB of RAM and that is all my system can hold. Can anyone recommend a solution for speeding up my backup processes and also not slowing down my system during backup?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  - Geo

I am still in the Middle Ages as far as connectivity goes.  USB2, Firewire and eSATA serve my needs.  Though my MBP has a Thunderbolt port, I have not taken that step.
Take a look at what OWC has to offer:
    https://eshop.macsales.com/search/thunderbolt
This just a sample but should give you a good idea what is available.  Naturally there are vendors as well.
Note that Thunderbolt hardware can be daisy chained, so not feel that you are restricted to two devices.
    Ciao.

  • Can anyone recommend a 1tb external hard disk?

I'm looking to purchase yet another external hard drive. I've already got a couple of LaCie disks (80gb & 300gb), the latter of which is now full of Apple Lossless files and converted ACC files for my iPod.
As I keep seeming to underestimate my space requirements, I'm looking to get a 1tb disk. Initially I was going to go with another LaCie drive but I've read quite a lot of bad things about them.
I need something that's going to be reliable and fast. Ideally with FW400/FW800 and usb2 interfaces. From what I've discovered so far it seems that the G-Tech and the OWC Mercury Elite drives seem to be the best.
Can anyone either recommend one to me or warn me about others?
    Many thanks

    Thanks for your input Chris.
I've been trawling through Google searches to find reviews of various drives. I guess that I'm looking for a pair of 500gb mirrored RAID drives with USB2, Firewire 400 & 800 connections.
I'm having trouble getting away from Other World Computing's Mercury Elite–AL Pro 800 RAID STRIPE FireWire 800/400.

But my trouble now is that I can't find a UK stockist so I think I'll have to start looking for other brands such as Maxtor.
Can anyone recommend a reliable manafacturer ??

  • Can anyone recommend a reliable external hard drive?

    Hi everyone,
I going to buy an external hard drive to back up my photos and music.  I already use time machine, but I've lost files so many times in the past, either through equipment eventaully not working or laptops being stollen etc.  So I guess I am backing my photos and music up twice.  I want to get a reliable hard drive, with a lot of space (as I have a lot of photos and music) whilst keeping costs fairly reasonable.
Has anyone got any recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

Well as with anything it can fail in one day or not for 10 years.
I have been using the Western Digital My Book Essential drives for about 5 or 6 years and the first 2 I bought, a 250GB and then a 500GB, are still working. So based on that, and the price and that it is USB 3, I purchased the newer style 2TB model.
It has also been my experience that if and when any external hard drive fails it is most likely the drive inside the enclosure is still good and it's just the electronics in the enclosure, the electronics that change the HDD standard connection to USB or Firewire or whatever, that have failed and taking the drive out of the enclosure allows you to get the data off it. That is if you have a SATA/IDE to USB adapter.
Of course there are times when the actual drive fails as they all do.

  • Recommendations for an external hard drive I can use for both the Mac and PC

    Hello,
I’ve used PC’s for nearly most of my life, and recently Imade the leap to using a Macbook Pro (the 15” Intel i7) as I got tired of theconstant crashes.  Long story short – Ineed to have a common external hard drive that I can use with both the PC’s andthe Mac I own.  Mostly I need theexternal drive to save my Microsoft Office documents, and family photos (aswell as Mp3’s and other programs).  I’vegone to the Mac Store in town, but I keep getting told that you cannot have acommon external hard drive between the two computers.  I’m just having a hard time excepting that,as I keep reading on Apple’s own website making the sales pitch of how PC userswho switch to a Mac wouldn’t have to purchase replacement hardware.  Are there recommended external drives thecommunity could recommend?  Also, wouldit be best to create a network drive to accomplish my goal? Any advice isgreatly appreciated.

Only one computer can be connected to one drive at a time without a server being involved or a NAS drive.
I don't think your needs are along those lines it's too complex.
Just a external drive formatted exFAT will do between Mac's and PC's.
Swtich the cable and connect to one or the other as needed or get two drives.
There are some hacks floating around that create a portable wireless shared storage so anyone with a wif can connect and share files with at like coffee shops.
Is that what your looking for?

  • Please recommend me an external CD/DVD writer to go with new Mac Mini

I'm thinking of buying a new Mac Mini, and I would like an external CD/DVD drive for it. It needs to be able to read and write to both CDs and DVDs, and I'm generally looking for something as cheap as possible. Obviously I don't want something that's going to break within a year though!
I plan on using it to watch DVDs, so something fairly quiet would be ideal. Speed isn't really a big issue for me.
If anyone can recommend something suitable and reliable (or, alternatively tell me what to avoid), I would be very grateful.

What is too expensive? The Apple Superdrive is $79.

I personally use a Samsung Blu-ray drive that burns and reads all.

One caveat, there is no Blu-ray player on the Mac that is free.
