Recommend me an external Monitor

Can anyone recommend me a good (cheap-ish) external monitor for my Thinkpad T420? I think I only have the standard graphics card and not NVidia. I am primarily interested in businessy type applications so do not need super high resolution or anything. Naturally, I don't have an HDMI out port.

I don't think you need to spend anywhere near the high end of that range. Even a good old VGA/DVI model will work fine for your needs. That also expands the universe of possible LCD monitors to ones that don't have HDMI input, including second-hand and off-lease, etc.
When you find something on offer, Google the model number and look for reviews to ensure that there are no significant issues with that model.

Recommendation for external monitor

I have a G4 12" 1.5 GHz PowerBook with 768 MB of RAM, currently running 10.4.7. I'd like to buy an inexpensive external monitor, and am currently looking at a Dell 19" flat panel (model number SP1908FP). I'm pretty ignorant about monitors; I've read some of the discussions on this board, and looked at the specs for my laptop, but I'd like a confirmation before I buy it. The Dell monitor specs say 1280x1028, and although I don't actually know what that means, I see that it matches the PowerBook specs. Do I need to know anything else? And what do I need in the way of connectors? Should I be looking at other brands?
Total newbie about this stuff, so all help is much appreciated!

My recommendation would be to get a widescreen monitor, as I think it fits more with the Apple design.
Your 12" PB came with a mini DVI to DVI adapter (you do remember where it is?). Using this adapter, you can hook it up to a monitor that supports a DVI input, which means you can display a digital signal - the computer doesn't have to convert it to analog first. I think the digital signal produces a crisper display.
We use a 19" Samsung widescreen monitor (model 940BW) on our mac mini (not a PB, I know), and it provides a great, widescreen, digital picture. The Samsung came with the DVI cable, so we didn't have to buy one. Got it from Sam's, around $200.
On an LCD screen, I think it's important to buy locally from someplace with a good return policy. Sometimes you can get a display with dead LCD pixels, and many vendors won't take them back unless there are a fair number not working (as I recall, one vendor says there have to be at least 8 pixels not working). If you buy from the internet, make sure you understand their return policy, and ask about dead pixels indicating a defective product (if you decide you don't want it, many companies will make you pay for return shipping. Defective mechandise most vendors will pay return shipping).

External monitor on MacBook Air looks terrible, recommendations?

I'm a software developer and I want to be able to connect an external monitor to my MacBook Air 11". The Apple store guy recommended a Belkin adaptor so I can connect my HDMI input devices. The connection works, but even at 1080p resolution, there are jagged edges and the text looks horrible. I tried an ASUS monitor and also my Samsung TV. It looks fine when using my Windows 7 computer. Is the adaptor no good? Is there a setting to turn on? What am I doing wrong?

Recommendations for external monitor in combination with USB 3.0 dock and X1 carbon touch

I'm waiting for my X1 carbon touch and USB 3.0 dock and keyboard/mouse to arrive any time soon. However, I'd be glad to get some help/recommendations on external monitor choice.
For instance, the new HP envy 27" caught my eye, since it includes speakers, but it comes with HDMI and Displayport connections only. As far as I understood, video connection itselft shouldn't be a problem using a DVI to HDMI adaptor, but how about the resolution of the X1 vs. a HD+ monitor, and how do I use the audio on this monitor (don't want to use the microphone jack in front of the dock, as it should look as minimalistic as possible)?
Is there a solution? via usb 3.0? or should I better consider another monitor? Anyways, DVI or HDMI, I don't want to connect a separate audio system to the dock. Any recommendations, or is it one of those gadgets that has not been thought through well enough and you need to wait for the next generation to be developed?

Since you don't want to use the jack on the dock, you could usethemini-DisplayPortontheX1cTouchasyourvideooutputoption because the version of DP on the X1c Touch includes the ability for audio to streamed over the DP connection in addition to video. This would require a compatible DP monitor.
You'll also want the monitor to support audio over the DP connection. The X1c Touch's graphics supports the output of an audio stream over DP and the machine should be be capable of this. This gives you two cables connecting to the X1c Touch -- the DP cable for audio and video and the USB 3.0 cable connecting to the dock. The dock would be attached to keyboard, mouse, USB accessories, and Ethernet (if necessary).
As far as what to look for in a monitor, my general recommendation is Dell Ultrasharp. They tend to be a good deal for an IPS monitor with at least an sRGB gamut and a solid warranty. I've never bothered to attempt to stream audio over DP because I have separate speakers for audio. In the same way that my last 3 laptops have been ThinkPads, my last three monitors have been Dell Ultrasharps. The graphics in the X1c Touch should be fine running a 1920x1080, so I wouldn't worry about resolution. It can be a little jarring to use monitors side-by-side when they have different pixel densities, so you'll likely end up treating them as separate display surfaces. I often have e-mail and Pandora open on my T420's screen while I'm doing the bulk of my work on my main monitors. If you think you'll be touching the screen a good bit, then you might want to look into buying a touch capable monitor. Otherwise your brain can become easily confused because it'll begin to think that all computer screens are touch-capable and you'll reach out and try to touch your desktop monitor without thinking.

I'm looking for a good external monitor. Any recommendations for a good 17 inch LCD monitor for my iBook?

There is an adapter for hooking up to an external monitor included with your iBook, but it can only mirror the image on your iBook's screen; if you want to use dual monitors, or you want to use a higher resolution, you'll need Screen Spanning Doctor (VersionTracker.com). Although it's a freeware app, it's very good and shouldn't do any damage to your iBook (I use it, and I have no problems).

Depending on your requirement and how much you are willing to pay. The one which can calibrate colors for photoshop normally more expensive than others. Your machine should be able to handle all normal monitors in the market today.

External Monitor - Max Recommended Resolution

I am planning on setting up a desktop situation for my laptop for when I am using it at home (for more screen real estate / comfort). The Nvidia information page says the 9400M can output up to 2560x1600.
I am wondering what is the recommended maximum resolution to try to drive with my Macbook? When I am using it with the external monitor I plan to have it in clam shell mode so all the graphic resources are used on the single display. I just won't want my external monitor to have to high of a resolution which may cause the graphical portions of OSX to slow down / lag.

Ideal because when I go shopping for a LCD monitor I'll look for one specifically with a 1920x1200 native resolution. Can you believe the only current computer monitors are all CRT? Haha! I've been a bit slow in updating in computer display technology .
It is good to hear that a higher resolution won't make the operating system chug. I didn't think it would, but I wanted to be sure. This is my first time using a mobile graphics card.

Good external monitor recommendations for T61?

I need a good external monitor for my T61, the bigger the better. I would prefer to keep the branding the same with Lenovo. Does anyone have any advice? Should I go with another manufacturer? The Apple displays are really cool. Does Lenovo make anything similar?

Recommend an external monitor

Hello All,
Looking for an external monitor to connect to my MBPro 2008 ; DVI out.
Right now I connect via DVI to HDMI cable to an old monitor that just doesn't have enough resolution and is only about 18-19'' diagonal.
Most of my footage is 1920x1080... Using FCE and Motion .
There are so many choices ; LCD, LED etc.., and I wonder what size I should get .
Best Buy has an AOC IPS LED 23" on sale for $139.

all consumer monitors are consumer monitors, so it does not really matter which one. check for a good picture. calibrate with test patterns for optimum contrast and colour reproduction. you will find these on the web.
if you work with interlaced formats (eg 1080 60i), most computer monitors will not display this (they show you a progressive conversion instead, so what you see is NOT what you get, especially with animations!). in this case, you better buy a TV with HDMI in. important: check that all automatic picture enhancements can be switched off. this is how i work.
monitor size depends on your viewing distance. check wikipedia for that. i work with a 42" TV about 1.20 meters away from my eyes. this is pretty well optimized for full HD, but would not be for standard resolution or 4k.

I am guessing you are receiving a message: "This movie cannot be played because a display that is not authorized to play protected movies is connected." To view HD video on an external display, the display must have a digital connection (DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI) and also support HDCP. If the monitor is HDCP compliant, then the issue would be related to the connect between the Mac and the monitor. I would recommend trying with one of the approved digital connectors.

2011 Macbook Pro External Monitor Problems

Hi all,
Looking through some of the threads, it appears that getting macbook pros to work with an external monitors is a big issue.
I've just bought a phillips 27" monitor and I'm having no luck whatsoever getting my MBP to see it. I've tried both HDMI and DVI using Apple's own mini adapters, but no matter I do, the monitor fails to detect any kind of signal and goes into sleep mode.
I occassionally get the blue screen flicker on my MBP as though it's trying to connect, but the monitor does nothing!!
I've tried most of the suggestions in other threads, which relate to earlier OSX versions, but nothing has helped.
I'm running 10.8.4 on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7.
If I fire up my Apple TV, I can use mirroring and the monitor displays my desktop no problem, but the picture quality is poor. So I guess the monitor works. I want to use a bigger screen as I use Logic Pro, so clarity is pretty essential when it comes to picture quality.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm? I don't know too much about this stuff. My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

1. Pretty much any make. Some monitors are MUCH better than others. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. There may be other monitors as good as Apple's 27" models, but I've never seen one better.

External Monitor for MacBook Pro 13"

Hello, I know there has been a number of threads on this topic, but I haven't found my answer yet.
I am looking for a third party external monitor for my 13" MacBook Pro. I read a lot of text on my computer so it is important that the text is sharp. I have tried a couple Samsung monitors so far and the text is far from sharp and in fact it is outright hard on the eyes.
Currently, I am using a 23" Samsung SyncMaster SA550 with a HDMI/MiniDisplay 6" cable, I am using it as the primary display with my laptop closed and the resolution is set to 1080p. It's almost as though the video card is not powerful enough to drive this monitor - is that possible?
I have two questions:
1) Is there anything I can do to get this monitor to display clearer text?
2) Can anyone recommend a monitor that would display clearer text?

The only reason I thought of suggesting 1920x1080 was becaue I looked up the specs on your 23" Samsung SyncMaster SA550 and see it only has vga and hdmi input. I suspect that because it's hdmi input the EDID info tells Displays to add 1080i and 1080p to the resolutions and suppresses the 1920x1080. It's why I wasn't sure it would be there in the first place.
So have you tried 1080i just to see what kind of results you get? And to cover all possibilities have you tried using the VGA connection?
It may just be that what you see on this particular monitor is as good as it gets.

Yes, it's possible to run an external monitor — all MBPs can do that. You can use any monitor and almost any widely available USB or Bluetooth mouse or trackpad, though I highly recommend Apple's own Magic Trackpad.
