Recommend midi/audio interface

I am just getting back into home recording and have the following setup:
Mackie 1604VLZpro mixer
Akai S5000
Various keyboards
Effects.
Guitars
Vocal mic
I want to purchase a suitable midi/audio interface to work with my G5 DP1.8 / OSX 10.3.9. I am thinking of buying Logic express or pro, haven’t decided yet.
Can anyone recommend a suitable interface that would work well with my setup.
Could the audio, guitars and vocals, be routed back through my mixer independently once recorded into logic?
Cheers
Rob

Check on the Alesis io14 or io26 -- I read all the forums and this one is coming up as the best, especially at the price. Also recommended by my pro audio guru friend (not a salesperson). I bought it and it worked immediately with my MacBook Pro.....for both audio and MIDI. It's in your price range, and believe me the io26, in particular, is a lot of high-end audio for the money. It's light, compact, but most of all it has some of the best components and construction you can buy.
The following link is to a Harmony Central pro review of the io26. Review is located at http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1562285
It's a long thread, dating back to its introduction in March, 07, and there is some discussion of early problems with certain computers and sequencing software. If you read through the entire thread you'll see they were resolved and that the reviews are very, very positive---especially the pro audio review by the Harmony Central reviewer.

My midi/audio interface ( Edirol PCR1) will not interface with Yosemite 10.10 and Roland have no driver update, is there any fix for the problem or is the end of the line for this device.

Same problem here, what a shame as this has been my favorite portable keyboard for ages. Whenever I see one in a store(very rarely) I'll grab it.

  • Recommendations for audio interface with new mac pro to avoid latency?

    Hi friends,
I have a new Mac Pro on order for editing video in FCPX, but Presonus says my older Presonus Firebox won't work with Mavericks and the new Mac Pro. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement?
I only use the interface to drive 2 powered expternal speakers and a headset, so I don't need something super sophisticated.
As I read about units, almost all come with USB 2.0 connections. But the new Mac Pro only offers USB, Thunderbolt 2, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 Ultra HD inputs. If I can't find a fairly inexpensive audio interface with USB 3.0, I'd have to go through another connection to get into the Mac Pro.
The key for me is to make sure and avoid latency, a critical issue for editing video.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

    Thanks Mark and Smokerz,
Your point about USB2 working in USB3 ports is something I wasn't aware of. That opens a lot of doors for me. And I'll look into the Yamaha sound board as one possibility.
Thank you both for helping me.

  • New-MIDI and Audio Interface

I am new to garageband but not new to the mac. I used to use Cakewalk on the PC for my sequencing about 15 years ago. I have a 12 powerbook 1.5. For MIDI I was looking at the MOTU FastLan. What about Audio? Can I use the line in on my laptop or do I need some kind of USB or Firewire interface?
As the interface is USB fast enough or do we need firewire?

If you are cash-strapped, you can use the line in on the Powerbook; however, you may need a preamp to boost the signal into the PB. I can use my electric guitar straight in, but a mic wouldn't work. I agree that you should probably just get a MIDI/Audio interface from the start, especially if you don't have any preamps of mixers laying around that can boost a signal. The consensus around here seems to be that Firewire works better overall and stresses that CPU less than USB. Lot's of people swear by the Tascam US-122 (USB) though. I'm saving for the M-Audio Firewire Audiophile or the Firewire Solo.

  • Audio interface/mixer advice

    Hi All
I've got a first gen macbook (the black one). I've got a USB external harddrive (about an extra 100 GB).
I have Logic Studio installed and i'm going to be doing some recording of my band in January.
I'm going to be buying an audio interface/mixer with a budget of between £300 - £400 UK pounds.
I will be requiring it to be a firewire connection that can stream the channels simultaneously (for recording drums tracks etc).
Recording the drums i know is the important part when it comes to channels etc so i think 8 or 10 will be absolutely fine.
Can anyone recommend an audio interface/mixer that they think is good, will work fine with my macbook and logic pro and achieve good quality home studio audio.
I've checked out M audios NRV-10 but dont think it has QUITE enough channels for drums etc
Is this Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire Mixer + Audio Interface any better?
    Any other suggestions
    Thanks in advance

  • Audio interface 2013 logic

I have some new monitors, audioengine5+ that don't seem to work with my old M-Audio Fasttrack interface, the first version; which M-Audio / Protools / Avid no longer supports. I looked at Apogee's offeringings, they support OS X Mountain Lion, but the products are geared towards thier Maestro software it seems. So what company does Apple recommend for audio interfaces? TC Electronics, Presonis, Focusright, etc. etc. ?

I don't know about what Apple recommends.... but I currently use and have used Motu products for the last 10 or so years and frankly I wouldn't use anything else at their price points... Their drivers are usually very stable and normally they are well ahead of the game when new OS X/ Logic versions are released so their drivers work right from Day 1 of release...
I am currently using several Ultralites (2*Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and a Mk3 Hybrid), an 828 Mk3 and an 896Mk3 Hybrid... and have had no issues whatsoever... for many years. I have also used the 4pre and 8pre many times at a client's studio again, without issues of any kind.
Nothing wrong with using Apogee equipment either... They cost more and I;m not really sure they offer that much more than the Motus for the price differences involved...but if you can afford them and feel they would provide you with better results.. then they work very well with Logic setups..
I would certainly avoid using M-Audio/Digidesign/Avid products with Logic.. at all costs based on the experiences of those that have purchased them and reported problems, mainly to do with failures of drivers to be promptly or correctly updated... time and time again here and elsewhere..
    Just my personal opinions... YVMV!

  • Newb question - audio interfaces - advice pls

Hey all, new to making music in the uk and have got myself a tutorial guide to logic and just getting started...cant wait to start making music, it seems awesome...
have got myself a macbook pro and logic pro 8.
I have discovered i'll need a midi audio interface asap to play a midi keyboard into logic, could anyone give me advice, if theres any that aren't compatible with macs or any that are particularly good for my price range/beginner model?
I am not likely to record more than 2 instruments at a time for a long while, probably just a keyboard for the foreseeable future, as i will probably just dabble in hiphop/trip hop beats to begin with
(have tried to search the forum but get a bit bogged down with the terminology as am new to this!)
any advice would be welcome...I dont mind paying between 150-200 for this..
    thx very much!!

I'm proud to say that i only regretted the purchase of my first guitar : ) every other piece of equipment has served its purpose wonderfully...
if you are going to buy something that only does one thing, make sure it does it well...for example, make sure that the guitar your using is comfortable and crafted well...
if you are going to buy something for various uses (i.e. audio interface) make sure that the features it possesses are applicable to your cause. Dont spend all that money on a audio interface with preamps if you can't sing, dont want to sing, and never ever will sing...much in the same sense that one wouldn't buy an iPhone if they already had a good phone, a good ipod, a good computer...the money pays for convenience sometimes...
in this particular situation concerning audio interfaces, the money you're paying only goes so far for features (preamps, inputs/outputs) the majority of the money after those features really goes for the sound quality. I bought my firepod on ebay for half price and it works like a charm...just know what you want to contribute to your songs by purchasing one

  • Recommendations for intel compatible midi and audio interfaces?

Right now I'm looking for recommendations on a small and cheap midi interface that already has Universal drivers.
Also, what audio interfaces are people using with intel macs? Who has drivers ready besides MOTU?

I've got an m-audio firewire 410, which is supposed to be a compatable interface, but the midi doesn't seem to work at all and the headphone cue only works when you monitor the aux sends.
-Know that even if you get one of the compatible interfaces, you may have to wait for a driver update before it functions at 100%.

  • What's a good hardware set up for a solo musician? USB pedal USB keyboard audio interface MIDI interface?

I am new to Main Stage. I have not bought any hardware interfaces yet because I don't know what will be the most flexible in the long run. I would be using the Main Stage's innate synths and keyboards, drums, an acoustic/electric guitar, bass, harmonicas and vocals. What type of hardware would you recommend? MIDI/USB keyboards? MIDI interface? Audio interface? USB pedal board controllers?
Would guys help me with specific suggestions and pointer on how I can make a good choice based on my needs?
    much thanks!

Then below this is the recording level slider which is all the way to the left or at 0. This is where the problem lies I think as this slider is greyed out and cannot be moved!

  • Midi controller / audio interface

hi - After years of working with Cubase on a PC, i have become a brand new mac convert and have just invested in a macbook pro with logic express.
I am looking for recommendations for getting midi in & out of the computer as well as a good audio interface. I play keyboards and will use an external midi sound module for sounds so midi latency (as near as possible to zero) is important as is audio quality and I am looking to buy a new midi controller keyboard. Am i right in thinking that the new breed of keyboards will act as the midi interface too?
Finally if there are any good "starting out" reading resources you can point me to that would be greatfully appreciated!
    thanks

    Hi Alex,
    Welcome to the Forum!
You already have the solution on the back of your mind,
Most midi keyboard controllers can be pluged via USB to your computer, and act as a midi interface for other modules too,
some of them also have an audio input.
As you don't state any buget, my only advice will go to the audio interface,
each one has it's own preferences, and I'm sure it's going to rain answer on that matter; go for an Firewire interface to audio (USB's weak), also take a look at your internal HD (I believe it's an 5400rpm drive) you need and external HD 7200rpm in that case for audio.
Finally, if the resources you looking are about Le, instead of reading
the best I fiound to date is Martin Sitter's videos:

  • Audio Interface recommendation?

I just bought logic pro sutdio for my macbook pro. I'm looking for a recommendation for an Audio interface.
Preferably good quality / low price / 2 inputs ok / include USB interface.
    Any suggestions?
My friend likes the Apogee Duet, but it's kind of expensive.

Interesting. I've heard great things about the Duet, but not THAT specifically. My MOTU sometimes makes me breakfast and tells me I'm cool. It's nice to hear.
Actually the MOTU seems to have more expandablility than the Duet (as I can tell, I haven't used the Duet). The MOTU has 10 analog outs, MIDI, S/Pdif, and 6 1/4 inch ins, as well as the stuff that the Duet has, XLR's, headphones, main outs, etc. You can actually use it as an analog to digital converter/mixer, without a computer.
Anyway, I've heard the Duet is a great piece. If you need more ins and outs like me, check out Ultralite.
    Good Luck!

  • Yamaha MO8 and Korg Volcas with Logic Pro X- recommendations for mixer and audio interface

I plan to use Logic Pro X to access and configure the patch list for my Yamaha MO8 workstation. The Steinberg software I downloaded previously didn't work and never allowed me to configure the sounds. From what I've heard, I was told to use a cheap mixer or a Audio/MIDI interface (like the Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4). The Yamaha MO8 will be used as a master and has MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU. I also have the Korg Volca synths to use as slaves (they only have the MIDI IN port), and plan to connect them to the MIDI THRU on the keyboard. I already have the Yamaha USB driver installed, and the Mac recognizes the device. I also have the Portmidi app and wonder if that will allow me to see the patch list (with the actual names, not numbers).
What mixer and audio/MIDI interface do you recommend to use the Yamaha MO8 and the Korg Volcas? Just to be clear, I don't want to use software synths, but would like to use the external instruments to get the audio (which I know can be selected through the Environment Panel on Logic Pro X).

Anything with 2 audio inputs and 2 MIDI outs.
-Out HP jack of Volca-1/8 to 1/4 adapter into Audio interface 1 (For any that are stereo use both 1 and 2 and use a Y splitter in addition to 1/8 to 1/4 adapters.
-Midi out from interface to Midi in of volca (Or buy a USB to MIDI interface for about $35)
-When starting up the volcas hold down the "Memory button" the LED will tell you what MIDI channel it is set to, you can change it if you wish)
-Create external MIDI track and set it to the same channel as the Volca (Only if you want to do sequencing in the DAW, if thee Volca sequencer is handling it then not necessary)
-Patch together the Volcas via the "synch out/Synch in" jacks to insure they are synched
-Record them all together or one at a time, depending on how many simultaneous tracks your interface can handle.

I’m having an intermittent problem with my midi controllers triggering Mainstage 3.
I’m using a PreSonus Firebox audio interface.
It’s been working fine for months, but now when I first turn on the computer in the morning , I’m not able to trigger MainStage from the keyboard.  I tried different midi controllers, different keyboards, different midi cords, and check midi preferences.  The audio interface is working fine and is recogonized, but the midi doesn’twork.  I re-started the computer several times and then finally it miraculously starts working again.
I’ve been having to this every day now.  Any help or ideas is very much appreciated.

I Had the same problem with a FireStudio. Try unplugging the FireWire plug and the power plug. Wait for a few seconds, then plug both back in. The light on my FireStudio was flashing blue/red which means "not connecting." I did what I just described, and everything works again. Hope it works for you.

  • Recommend me an audio interface

I need an audio interface - PCI, Firewire or USB-2 - with a bunch of inputs and outputs (min. 6 in, 4 out), a couple of universal XLR/minijack input jacks with good pre-amps and, here's the clincher, separate level controls for headphones and monitor output.
Does anyone know of anything that suits my needs?

I agree, I would stay away from M-Audio and definitely from Digidesign. I really want to recommend Metric Halo and the RME Fireface, but they are both out of your budget and do not give you separate headphone and monitor knobs on the physical interface (except the ULN2 which is limited in i/o options).
I would look into Presonus first, and MOTU second. I think the converters on the Presonus interfaces are slightly better. But MOTU interfaces are pretty solid and have good drivers.
    Good luck.

  • Looking for reccomendations for a midi keyboard/audio interface.

I heard that I can buy a MIDI keyboard that also acts as an audio interface for Garageband (or other audio programs). I would like a keyboard with a decent octave range; weighted keys would be nice but that may be asking too much. Anyone have suggestions?

There are few combined keyboard interfaces about: M-Audio make a couple:
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.list&ID=audiointerfacekb
but I don't think they are at all a good deal. For the money you would do much better to buy an M-Audio Keystation 49e or 69es and a separate audio interface such as Edirol's cheapest one, the UA-1EX or possibly their more expensive but more highly featured UA-4FX: or the Tascam US 122L.
