Recommendation for a good USB/Firewire hub

I have too many potential peripheral devices, and need more firewire and USB ports for my G5 iMac. I've read mixed reviews of the Belkin "mini" hub, including the fact that it is not powered.
Does anyone use one of these?
is it good/bad/mediocre?

There is a nice free application that I use. It is Zenbe Lists. It actually syncs with a free web account that can be accessed from your desktop. Maybe not what you're looking for, but what do you have to lose if it's free? Good luck!

  • Looking for a good usb hub that will allow my mouse and external hard to work together

I'm looking for some ideas for a good usb hub that will allow me to use a wireless mouse and an external hard drive at the same time, without shorting out the mouse.  The one i currently have, when I plug in just the mouse, it's fine, but as soon as i put the external hard drive into the hub port, the mouse no longer works and i have to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Hubs and computers vary in their power needs, but it seems that your setup is lacking in the power department. This isn't a big deal with desktop computers, but since you use a MBP, you're going to do best with a powered USB hub.
If you're looking for a USB hub with power supply, Belkin is generally reliable (and above average in price). But the D-Link is compact, reliable, and has a good price. Aim for a USB 3.0 hub if possible, though 2.0 will work fine with just about anything. Insist on a refund if the hub doesn't work in your system. Make sure it's compact, since you'll be carrrying it around.

  • Belkin MacMini 6 Port USB/Firewire Hub  F5U507

Does anyone have the Belkin F5U507 6 Port MacMini USB/Firewire Hub?
I want to buy it but I'm hesitating, being concerned that it doesn't have its own AC power unit to attach to the wall socket.
It does look nice, matching up to the Mini, but I don't want it to be a case of more form than substance.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks.

Well, this may be an "oopsie" for me then. I just purchased this hub a couple of days ago from the Apple store (my powered Belkin hub - the lozenge-shaped one - just failed).
I was wondering how they got around the fan-out issue with the new hub being unpowered. Well, I have time to cancel the order.

I have another unpowered Belkin hub that it sees, but not the IOGEAR. I bought the IOGEAR based on Mac forum recommendations.

  • Any recommendations on a good USB and FireWire Hub?

Just bought a MacBook Pro and I'm about to start experimenting with Final Cut Express. With ports needed for usb powered speakers, a mic, a mouse, a usb flash reader (for photos)... and firewire ports needed to upload video and to connect an external drive, I'm thinking I need a hub.

The problem with a Firewire hub is you are still limited to one Firewire bus. Fortunately Express/34 cards exist with Firewire to add a Firewire bus:

You may want to consider getting a 160 GB hard drive for your MacBook to have more storage for video and partitoning that drive to use part for just temporary scratch storage space which can be erased with Disk Utility.
As for USB hubs, always get ones that have their own external power supply from the computer, and don't use the bus power unless the devices you are hooking up have their own power. I have the MacAlly hub, yet even this great hub can't hook up an external Firewire hard disk and an EyeTV simultaneously.

  • I need a recommendation for a good word processor

i have two macs at home which are fully converted to pages and keynote. my family has now fully converted from using clunky office 2004 to iwork. i bought a used ibook g3 for $275 and i thought i could use it for writing essays at school. and its pretty light at 4.9lbs after all (well it's the lightest mac around). i installed iwork thinking it could run smoothly. i found out that when i begin typing, the words take forever to print on the screen. it gets even slower while moving paragraphs around. so now i thought i would have to run word 2k4. that's no problem since i have been used to using word for years. well, as a matter of fact, i can't stand word one bit. pages is just so much better and cleaner, i simply can't take the user interface MS has built. since i am on a 12in screen, the Word window is awkward and clunky. so, i am now thinking of getting appleworks, but that software is older than panther, so i dont know how powerful it really is.
if anyone can recommend me a good app for just writing essays, please tell me. is there a way to make pages run faster, or make word look better? thanks, gabe.
what i am doing now is using word to type and copying everything to pages so it can be formatted better. its pretty slow, annoying but it gets the job done.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
For your G3 iBook, I recommend AppleWorks 6. You should have received the original disks with that iBook & those disks include AppleWorks. If you didn't get them & can't get them from the seller, you could call Apple & ask for a replacement set of original disks. There will be a small charge, but I'd consider it worthwhile just to have a set of the originals. If you want to buy AppleWorks 6, try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • Recommendations for a good spectrum/frequency analyzer

Hello looking for a good spectrum/frequency analyzer AU plug-in
    Many thanks Fatal Movez

It's not a plugin, and it's expensive, but possibly the best thing out there is SpectraFoo.
Even though it's not a plugin, it works fine with Logic via SoundFlower.
At the other end of the price scale, there is Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst, a free plugin. But I'm not sure if it shows you a lot more than what you can already see in Logic's MultiMeter. I wonder if you've tried that?

  • Anyone recommend a good duo USB/Firewire hub?

    Hey all,
I looked at the Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0/Firewire 6-port hub at the Apple store but half the people who wrote a review said it was a dud because of noise issues. I'm also not thrilled that it relies on the computer for power - I've heard that its better if the unit has its own power supply. Any alternative recommendations with the understanding that I really need both the UBS and Firewire ports?

Nice tutorial BK, very descriptive. So from looking at your pics the plug in works with amd dts as well?
nope, its for CD2 only, correct plugins for my mobo is (NVSU.dll)-->This plugin provides CPU temperature, System temperature, CPU fan speed and System fan speed hardware monitoring data sources for nForce system boards, supporting NVIDIA System Utility BIOS SMI interface.
CD2 plugin can be loaded in AMD board, but nothing will read of course, in some of picture i have improvise Core0 and Core1 is actually mine 2 GPU's, but procedure is the same/match with CD2 installation.

  • Looking for a good USB Hub

I am looking at purchasing one of two different USB hubs for my iMac. Both are from Belkin. The first is a 7 port hub and the second a 4 port.
I am leaning towards the 7 port but have heard that it suffers from severe overheating. I'd like to know if anyone here has experienced this problem with either of the Belkin hubs. If you did have a problem what are you using now?
Any info is helpful, even recommendations of other hubs available on the market. A four port hub meets my requirements exactly. I have an APC UPS and my iSticks plugged directly into my iMac, and I will be plugging in my free-1 Skype phone, 5G iPod, card reader and Shuffle into the hub. I like the idea of having a couple extra ports for future devices.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Tom.
Not bad. However, I don't plan on using the dock once my Vaja case arrives. Much as I did with my XtremeMac case with my two previous iPods, I will leave my iPod in the case when connected or charging. If I did plan on using the dock I would use the Universal dock I have now. To be honest I think having an upward facing USB port is extremely useful for plugging in a Shuffle. With the TuneSync hub I would have to reach in behind every time I wanted to connect or disconnect the shuffle. Either that or I would have to buy a dedicated Shuffle dock. I think it is more efficient to purchase one device allowing me to connect a Shuffle rather than two.
    Thanks again.

  • External drive for Time Machine and Firewire Hub

Just got a new iMac. My old iMac G5 was running 10.4.11 so no Time Machine. On the new iMac I am running 10.5.6 I find I have questions about how to go about making best use of this new facility available to me. Since my new iMac has only one firewire port (FW 800) I also need an additional port here.
My thoughts are to use an external drive connected with FW 800 as a Time Machine backup and use the (usually) extra FW 800 port to extend the FW 800 and I find I can get a dual interface drive with both FW 800 and FW 400, so I could use the FW 400 for FW 400 devices like other FW 400 drives and my video camera.
Currently I use SuperDuper to make clone backups of my HD on a weekly basis (I use 2 drives for this on a rotating basis). I plan to continue that in addition to the facility offered by Time Machine (on a separate drive).
    My questions are...
Is it a good idea to use the extra FW 800 or 400 port on an external to connect other drives to use for clone BUs?
If that is a good idea...
What brand and size of drive to use for the Time Machine BU (FW 400/800 sharing)
    A. Maxtor?
(I have several OneTouch II and OneTouch III that I use for clones, I have been using them for a few years without problem. I seem to remember reading about some problems with Maxtor, have I just been lucky?)
    B. Newertech MiniStack v3 from OWC MacSales?
    C. OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro™?
If the OWC Mercury Eltite is a good choice...
Is a 750 GB large enough?
Is it worth it to get the 1TB Enterprise 7200RPM?
    Any other suggestions?
    Andy

i needed 3 drives in total so went with my 2nd choice of buying external enclosures and then hard drives,
at the end it cost me much much less so i endded up buy another as a spare,
so currently using 4 NexStart combo enclosure each one fitted with a 500gb hard drive,
i got one connected to my G5 and 3 connected by FW400 to my imac through a daisy chain,
for time machines it doesnt matter about speed so you dont need to use up the FW800 Port,
    FW400 will be fine,
before this i had a USB2 WD Book and was using that with time machine and never had a problem through USB,
i always connect to a port i hardly use as i wont ever need to keep taking it off if i had to connect my camera to it for example....

  • External Drives: 2.5" (portable)? Interface for booting up (USB/Firewire)?

It's getting hard out there to find an external drive that has both USB and Firewire connections. But if something goes wrong with my system and I need to boot up from an external, does the iMac G5 require the external to be Firewire?
Also, there are a lot of external drives that are described as "portable" (2.5"). Can I use one of those portable drives as an external drive for a desktop system (like iMac G5 - has 3.5" internal drive)? Or are these 2.5" portable drives meant to be used just for laptops?
    Thanks all.

Yes, the boot drive had to be firewire, but you can use a 2.5 portable as long as it has OS X on it and is firewire(I use SuperDuper! to make a bootable clone).

  • Suggestions for Higher End USB/Firewire Interface

I am looking for a pretty good quality interface that will let me record at least 2 tracks (stereo minijack doesn't seem to record to seperate tracks yes?) - but preferrably 4 or 8 tracks at a time into GarageBand.
One thing I've seen is this m-audio w/ 4 inputs but it looks lousy for Macs by the reviewers' accounts. http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-FireWire-410-Recording-Interface/dp/B0000TP588/sr= 1-11/qid=1172259647/ref=sr111/105-2727921-4590048?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
I have a Macbook pro. I also have a pretty nice 16 channel Mackie board -- but no way to get multiple tracks into GarageBand. Are there interfaces that are simply conduits to multiple tracks without the need for pricey pre's that I have in the mixer?
    Budget = up to $400 or $500.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

are there more mobile, non-rack options?
Can you explain what the problem is with the FirePod? I find it very mobile because I have not mounted it in any of our racks, I just pick it up and take it where I need it (jsut because it CAN be rack mounted doesn't mean you have to do so B-)>.
It's a fantastic interface and at a decent price for what it has.

  • Upgraded from iMac to MBP - now USB & Firewire hubs don't work

    Hi there,
I've just upgraded from a 2008 C2D 20" iMac to a new 2011 13" MBP i5. I'm running Pro Tools 8LE via a Digi 003 rack & have a Command8 plus other USB/FW400 devices in my set up. I've always used both a USB hub & a FW400 hub to connect everything to the iMac (daisy chaining causes some instability issues / track restriction in Pro Tools).
Now however, the MBP doesn't see any devices connected via the hubs. If I connect directly & daisy chain the devices, they work. I have the USB hub connected to the MBP with a FW800-FW400 cable.
Any idea what's causing this? Here's links to both hubs... they have been working fine with this setup for 3 years:
    http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=198333
    http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=196166
    Thanks

I had the same problem with my desktop Mac, and resolved the hub situation by following two suggestions: (1) daisy-chaining the devices (which you're already doing) and (2) reset the hub. For the latter, pull out your devices/hubs, reboot your MBP, and put the devices/hub in. This resets the hubs so you can use them again.
It also might help if you make sure you've plugged in the wall outlet; this increases the power available to your devices.
I'd be very interested if these fixes work.
