Recommendation for home wireless service in So Cal?

I need to purchase wireless internet service for new home in Southern California.  I currently use ATT DSL.  After briefly switching to ATT Uverse on advice of ATT customer service when I wanted to upgrade to faster service and old airport apparently stopped working correctly, it was a disaster. (There is a separate conversation on the Apple Forum about the experience.) After much hassle I switched back to ATT DSL and bought a new airport.  Things have worked fine since, although my son still thinks it takes too long to download movies. We are a Big Mac household - iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone 5, two MacBook Airs, iTouch - and an oddball Droid phone. New home currently uses Verizon phone and internet service through Time Warner (I'm choosing to go with Direct TV).
So my questions - Does Verizon wireless internet service work well with a household full of Macs? I prefer to use an Airport. Is there a modem and/or router that Verizon uses that is good or bad? Fios or DSL? (I had a horrible experience with the modem/router with the Uverse disaster.) Has the modem/router/Mac connection improved with Uverse? Or should I just stick with what I know works for me - ATT DSL even though its not the fastest speed?
I'm not technologically sophisticated (this is probably obvious), so would appreciate replies in plain English.  Thanks!

DSL is yesterday's technology:
BEST is Verizon FIOS (or ATT Uverse) depending if either has fiberoptic cable to your door (call each to find out; they will know from your address).  Be careful, ATT is now calling their non-fiberoptic service Uverse; so ask about fiberoptic!
I use Time-Warner Internet at its fastest consumer speed.  I am currently uploading a 16GB file to an associate in UK and it will take 18 hours (remember upload is always much slower than download).  I think my service is 20 or 30 down and 1 up; at about $40/month.  I have multiple routers to connect it to many Macs, iPhones, AppleTVs, home entertainment systems, etc.
Stay away from satellite; it is ONLY for internet service to the boonies...
FYI: I use DirecTV (and a roof-top antenna) for TV and T-Mobile for both VoIP at home and iPhone 5. Everyone HATES the Time-Warner cable service due to their monopoly in So. Cal.
T-Mobile has best monthly rates in So. Cal for iPhone 5 AND you can purchase additional data for tethering (using your iPhone as a WiFi HotSpot or with BlueTooth, as I use it at an off-line office that has no internet service).  AND you can talk and internet at the SAME TIME, unlike Verizon which on the iPhone is one or the other.
Soon T-Mobile will implement their UMA/WiFi Calling feature for the iPhone; already implemented on Blackberry, Android and other phones.  This allows FULL T-Mobile talk and text coverage ANYWHERE in the world where you have access to WiFi.  I use it with my Blackberry on every trip to London or at my girlfriend's house in the hills above Santa Cruz by swapping the SIMM card, now with micro-SIMM adapter.

  • Open DNS - For Home Wireless

Is openDNS be an advantage to my home wireless serving all wireless devices & up internet speed and faster identification?

There are always pros and cons for everything. If you want to go with OpenDNS consider some of these things:
Please don’t expect huge gains in browsing speed since OpenDNS only improves the cycle between your computer and the DNS server.
I got this from this site:
OpenDNS: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
" OpenDNS is fast and reliable, more than the service offered by any ISP I have used. In addition, it offers a host of other features: Content Filtering, Phishing Protection, Domain Blocking, Adult Site Blocking, Web Proxy Blocking, Domain Whitelisting, Statistics, Typo Correction, Web Shortcuts.
When you type in a domain that does not exist, OpenDNS resolves it to it’s own servers and shows search results (powered by Yahoo!) that they hope will help you find the site you were looking for."

  • Iphone 4 showing wrong IP address for home wireless

2 days ago we reset our home wireless password and updated our devices (ipad, laptop, and two cell phones). Now my iphone 4 will no longer connet to the wireless. It accepts the new password to join the network but it never connects. It is showing wrong IP address. How can I change it to the correct IP ? Tried hard rest, forget network, and renew lease all trying to get it to automatically update the info. Out of ideas. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same router as you, I have Comcast, and I am having the exact same INFURIATING problem.
Comcast and Apple have no ideas. Linksys tells me I am having a router problem.
I even went so far as to buy a new router and modem from Linksys (as they claim they no longer make the router/modem combo because it doesn't work well). I still don't buy this... my PC, my PS3, my DS... all of them connect to the router perfectly.
I have the new modem and router here and planned to give that a whirl tonight but Comcast was being difficult and saying it could take 72 hours to activate my new modem. Totally unsat. I had them reconnect the WCG200 and I am still trouble shooting to no avail...
If anyone finds a fix (short of a new router and new modem)... please post!

  • 4G use for home wireless. Fed up with Comcast

Is it possible to plug the 4G into a wireless router so that multiple users can have access? Normally I only need to for my laptop but when I have guests I need to availability to allows others on-line access

    pondview,
Several routers support the Pantech UML290, but I don't know of one that supports the LG modem.  The Nexaira Business Class II, the Wifi Ranger, and several routers from CradlePoint support the Pantech.  I recommend searching the EVDO forums for discussions on this topic.  Read what others have experienced.  I've been using the Nexaira router with generally positive results.
Having said that, do you really want to drop your wired connection from Comcast?  4G LTE has great speeds--even faster than many cable connections--but the 5G/10G cap can bite you, particularly if you need to perform software updates.
    Cheers,

  • Recommendations for a wireless setup

I have a Mac Pro, but it doesn't have any Bluetooth or wireless access. I've been thinking about remedying this so I can use the laptop in the other room or on the couch or... well, y'know. Freedom.
The Mac Pro is attached to the internet via cable-modem setup.
What would folks recommend to make the Mac Pro a wireless server for the laptop?
    Tony

After the keynote today, I would recommend purchasing the new Time Capsule which is also an Airport Base station as well as a 500 GB or 1 TB NAS and wireless networking router and storage. That Time Capsule and its wireless networking and storage is so much more necessary than a cute MBA.!
With that, you would hook it up to your cable modem and then ethernet to your MAC PRO that does not have its own wireless. Then you would have a new wireless and wired network which would allow your computers to talk to each other and the internet.

  • Your best recommend for a wireless headset/bluetooth for Skype

    Anyone found something that delivers?
    Thanks

The Motorola HT820 works great. It is one of my all-time best purchases. http://direct.motorola.com/ens/BTStereoHSWebProductHome.asp?country=USA&language=ENS
It works with my MB Pro, in Skype. It works with my iPod, using the iMuffs Bluetooth transceiver, from Wi-Gear. Naturally, it works with my Motorola phone. It also comes with a cable for use as a wired headset, so it works on the airplane, in place of the cheesy headphones that the airlines provide. That cable also allows you to use the headset as a wired headset for the Mac, while on the airplane. However, the cable option is only for headphones, so the mic does not work with the wired connection.
You start by setting up a new Bluetooth headset, from your Bluetooth preferences panel and add it to your favorites. You only have to do this once. Note: You do NOT have to select the HT820 as your system sound device. You only need to do that in Skype.
To use it in Skype, you make sure that the headset is off. Then, hold the power button (left side) down for about 8 seconds (till the blue light starts pulsing) to put it into "find-me" mode. Then, in the Skype preferences panel, select the HT820 for both the input and output. In a moment, you will be prompted for the security code. Type "0000" and hit "Return". You will hear a tone in the headset and the blue light stops pulsing. You are connected.
To save battery on the headset, it is a good idea to go back and select the default input and output, when you are through using the headset.
When you want to go back to using the HT820 on your cell phone, you will probably have to tell your cell phone to re-connect to the HT820. For me, this step requires only that the HT820 is turned on.
Motorola now makes a much smaller version of this headset, as well. I have seen it, but I have not tried it out. The model is MOTOROKR S9. I have seen it at the Cingular/AT&T store and at Radio Shack. As I understand, the only difference is that it uses "bud" style speakers on the headset, instead of over-the-ear speakers and the Bluetooth electronics and battery are integrated in the headband, behind the neck, instead of in the speaker housings.
I highly recommend the Motorola HT820. If you have an iPod with a dock connector, then I also recommend the iMuffs Bluetooth transceiver (MA110 - http://www.wi-gear.com/products/imuffs/ma110.php), to pair with the HT820, so you can go totally wireless. It is much smaller than the transceiver from Ten Technology. However, the Wi-Gear headset had problems and I had to return them.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base for home wireless

I've read some of the comparisons between the Airport Express and Airport Extreme Base station to make an informed choice before purchasing. The Airport Express probably will suffice for my needs, plus having AirTunes is a bonus. Mobility is not such a concern (most hotels now offer wireless in any case, making the Express less appealing than when it first came out).
But my only concern with Airport Exress is durability and quality. Some postings on the Apple site note that these can go bad after a year or so. I realize that only those having problems are posting but wondered if there might be some issues with the Express that would make the Extreme Base station a better decision, especially since it's only $30 more now.
    Thanks in advance.

Actually it really boils down to your needs.
Either one will work and work well, but if air tunes, and portability is important Express is the way to go. The Extreme is a very good choice as well.
I suggest you look over both of these links and decide the features you need.

  • Can't wirelessly connect HP c7280 for home wireless network using A.express

Hey there, I'm hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a HP C7280 multifunction printer and have had a wired connection with my new iMac. I'd like to connect wireless and am having extraordinary difficulty. I'm using the latest leopard update. HP doesn't seem to offer any clear assistance. so i'm using an airport express that's connected to my router. I set up a wep key 40 bit and am trying to input that information into the printer's wep key password request. It finds my wireless signal named "Airport" and asks me for a wep key, when i enter the wep key which is 6 letters and 2 numbers, the response I get from the printer is
"key must be >5 or 13 characters OR - >10 or 26 length with 0-9 and A-F (hex). I've tried to follow this request but i can't seem to make it connect. this aforementioned message keeps popping up. what must i do? i've even restored the printers network factory default to no avail

The HPc7280 printer seems to be notoriously buggy. Get the new updated driver from the HP website and try to reinstall from scratch. Make sure you delete the previous driver version, because it might be seeing that it was a wired connection. The HP cannot be set as a default printer on Vista machines, it has to be chosen as a printer. After many hours of setup, our HP is finally working seemlessly with our Macs and PC.

  • Recommendations for good wireless repeaters

I have a Linksys WRT610N router.  It works fine.  However, I have it at one end of my house, because that's where the phone line comes into the house and I've got DSL.  Therefore, the wireless signal gets weak towards the other end of the house, especially for 802.11g.  Today I learned that there's a thing called wireless repeaters.  This sounds like a great idea, and may help me with being able to get the G band to the rest of the house.  What makes/models of wireless repeaters would work best with my WRT610N router, especially for 802.11g?

  • Home Phone Service via Verizon Wireless needs some SERIOUS rethinking!

Has anyone else signed up for home phone service over Verizon Wireless?
Here in LA, they offered a $19.99/month deal using the wireless service - a box provides the service, and you plug your home phone in. The service is adequate, but somebody forgot to think about how home phones work. I tried to get my billing set up through my bank, and after getting no notice for three weeks, I got a message in my email box that my bill was delinquent, and I owed a late fee. I had tried to set up the billing via My Verizon, but could never get a password to work. I finally got a phone number to call, and they sent me a new password via text message - to a home phone with no text capabilities. After hearing and seeing nothing for another two weeks, I called again, and they told me they'd sent the message. I had to remind them that this was a home phone - no texts. So they offered to send me a letter with a new password, within 7-10 ten days. It arrived two weeks later, and didn't work. Each of these phone calls took about an hour, and I still didn't have a connection.
I put the bills (now up to two delinquent cycles) on my credit card, just to bring thins current, and got one more password. This time I called BEFORE trying it, and with the assistance of a more determined tech, got an ID and password combination to work. I can now see my bill. I still don't know if the autopay will work, and I have no idea if there's any way to get a notice that the bill wasn't paid.
I cancelled my AT&T service because of its cost, but at least its billing worked. Verizon has some serious rethinking to do about how it's billing system works for home users. And they didn't lock me into billing hell for two years.
The topper is, today, I got a notice from Verizon that I've been delinquent in returning a refurbished instrument I never received, billed to a phone number I don't have. And of course there's no phone number to call to straighten it out.

        Hello KeyGroupGJ!
Wow, Im sorry for all the issues you have had with the Home Phone Connect service! I'd really like to assist you. You mentioned that there is no number to call to get this straightened out. • [Solved For Now] Wireless Not Working on HP Pavillion 15-n278sa

EDIT: I seem to have fixed it for now by following this tutorial, I don't know how long it will last though: http://askubuntu.com/questions/337785/w … -c55-a5281
    Hi there guys,
I have been having some problems with my Wireless under arch on my lapotop, which is a HP Pavillion 15-n278sa. I've had the wireless working twice before, but a reboot broke it both times. The Ethernet works perfectly fine. The first time I have no idea how I got it to work, it was a combination of a bunch of different threads and eventually I modprobed the wireless adapter and it worked (this no longer works).
This is the output of when I try to connect to the wireless using wifi-menu:
Job for [email protected] failed. See 'systemctl status [email protected]' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
So I run systemctl status [email protected] and journalctl -xn and this is the output of the both respectively:

If there is anything more I can provide I would happily do it, I really need the wireless to work under this laptop. I know it works, I have had it working under Arch and it works under Ubuntu no problem. I am not sure if it is a driver problem, or if it's a problem with netctl. It looks more like a problem with netctl as after netctl updated it started working, and after a reboot it broke again.
    Thanks so very much everyone,

  • Home wireless network in China using Airport Express ?

I am going to be living in China with my Macbook. I will be bringing my Airport Express with me.
I would like to know whether it is appropriate to connect up my Airport Express to a Chinese cable modem to obtain wireless internet access at home.
Or is it a very different system used in China for home wireless network.

Many, but not all of the same wireless channels in the US are allowed in China. See this Wikipedia Document for some information.
As to whether you will connect using ethernet or PPPoE, etc., that will depend on the provider that you choose.
