Recommendation for Tape drives/library connected to DPM on virtual machine

Hi,
we are running DPM as a virtual machine in an hyper-v environment. Now we want to add long term storage -> tape. I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might
not be the best way to go.
We would prefere to use a "traditional" tape library. The best option I found would be iSCSI tape libraries but the only ones I found started at around 6000 US$. As I will be backing up only up to 1.5 TB/night I don't want to spend that much money. In addition
I don't know if they are really going to work.
The other option I saw was to use a SCSI to iSCSI Bridge and connect a SCSI tape library that way. I found solutations for around 3000 US$. Which is still a lot but better then the iSCSI Tape drives.
Does someone else have recommendations or some other ideas what works best? The only entries I found so far were from 2008 and I am quite sure that things have changed since then.

Actually, it might, you can use removable media to host the virtual tape files created by firestreamer and take the removable media offsite.  So instead of rotating physical tapes, you rotate physical removable media.
Closing for housekeeping.

  • Tape drive library for Xsan??

    Hi All,
One of my clients wants to install tape drive library for his Xsan setup. What would you guys suggest? Anyone using tape library? Please share your inputs and feedbacks. Pros and Cons.
    cheers,
    Pradeep

We are unhappily using BRU because it came bundled with our Exabyte tape system. (I will first state that I have nothing else to compare this to since this is our first tape backup system/software)
The user interface is pretty awful...you can accidently click off or on a setting and loose your archive listings. We also have an ongoing issue where sometimes the library can find and read all of the tapes and sometimes it can't.. I would say this was a tape issue or user error, except that the act of restarting BRU solves it ever time...

  • SL500 - Enabling Hardware Encryption for Tape Drives

I have a SL500 with seven HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 tape drives. These tape drives have hardware encryption capabilities and several ways to configure the encryption settings.
In the white papers for the HP LTO-4 encryption technology (http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA1-4878ENW.pdf), all possible ways to manage the encryption settings are listed. One possibility, native mode encryption, is mentioned: "This method controls the LTO4 encryption from within the tape drive library. There is one key that is set by way of the library management interface (Web GUO or Operator Control Panel). This method encrypts all tapes with the same key, with the downside of negatively impacting the security level."
Does the SL500 provide any to do this?

We just got an SL500. When the Sun engineer was onsite, he mentioned an encryption capability. The way he explained it, there is an optional chip that needs to be purchased, as well as an encryption server. Once this is in place, encryption is easily done. If you were to have the same setup at a DR site, the encryption server would auto search for the encryption key whenever the tape is read. Seems to be a good system, but I have no experience with as we do not have that policy....yet

  • Faxing does not work. Says it's waiting for the driver to connect.

I set up the bluetooth fax printer but when I click to send the fax, it says that it's waiting for the driver to connect.
    Any ideas?

If you don't have a land line you can't fax without a system like eFax which uses e-mail to send faxes to a phone number. If you have a land line, you must tie up the land line to connect to another phone number to Fax to it.
You can probably also fax over VOIP based lines, but not all have a strong enough signal for faxing. Check with your VOIP carrier if you have one if Faxes are supported. Regardless, the Fax capability of any multifunction printer or scanner is only operable through an actual phone line. VOIP offers phone line to internet capability.

  • Our HDB tool  just stopped connecting to the Azure virtual machine

Our HDB tool just stopped connecting to the Azure virtual machine while it is working fine on AWS. The error we are getting is:
"HDB -system state cannot be determined. Database connection is not available."
    Any suggestions/comments from the community?
    Thank you
    Koushik

    Update as promised.
I just went ahead and created a new VM.  All is good!!!!
    Server 2012 (Datacenter)
Downloaded and installed SQL Server 2012 Standard (Basic install only need the DB engine)
Configured for mixed mode, etc.  (I did not need to change anything after the install was done)
Opened endpoints and VM firewall ports
    Tested and worked as expected
Then went ahead and installed IIS, Web Deploy and updates.
All is working as expected.  Not sure what I messed up the first go around.
If anyone comes across this and the docs don't help, just try to set up a new VM (either SQL or Server and install SQL).

  • Backup strategy with no tape drives/library

Hi, I am new into the job of sys admin, so we recently setup a system with running solaris 10 and with its storage as a NetApp, but we do not have yet a library or tape drive attached to it.
So how can I approach this problem? Can I setup a LUN on NetApp and copy all important stuff to that LUN?

For the oracle backup, oracle should have comands to dump or export the database to a file, and that file could be backed up. Alternately, there are problably options to put the database in read-only mode, so that you can back up the database files without worrying that they will be changed during the backup.
For other files, if you are using zfs snapshots, you could back up the zfs snapshots even if the original file is still open.
You might also want to look at the rysnc command- that should let you back up only files that have differ between the source and destination (i.e. you could do differential backups.) So maybe you could a monthly full backup with tar to NAS or SAN, a weekly rsync incremental backup, and daily zfs snapshot that is kept for a week.

  • Recommendations for arranging drives

    Heres my situatioin:
I have a MSI 875P Neo-fis2r.  I just bought a brand new 250 GB Seagate SATA drive.  I already have in my computer 2x 80 gig ATA hard drives one on primary slave/master.  Then a dvd player and dvd burner on secondary  slave/master.  I want to add my new hard drive and if I can keep the old ones.
What is the best setup since if I run in PATA + SATA mode I can only have 4 devices (2 from each) connected.  Please give me recommendations for doing this setup.  Should I use the Promise RAID controller?  Thanks

    Try these settings in BIOS:
    ATA On Chip Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA Only
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
    Set SATA as RAID: No
    (The rest leave as default)
    or
    ATA On Chip Mode: Native
    ATA Config: PATA Only
    SATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    Set SATA as RAID: No

  • Lt takes 60 sec for thin driver to connect to server

I'am using thin type dtiver to connect to Oracle
database but it takes more than 60 sec to connect to.
What seems to be a problem? I connect to 9.2.0.4.
    Thank you

    Vasili,
    You asked:
What seems to be a problem?Could be lots of things. Most of them are probably not related to the Oracle database version you are using.
For your information, it usually takes between one to three seconds to get a connection in my environment. I have a simple java class (with a "main()" method) on a Windows XP machine with JDK 1.4.2 and the "ojdbc14.jar" file (which is the Oracle JDBC driver) which connects to an Oracle 9.2.0.4 database on a SUN [sparc] machine with Solaris 9. The two computers are on the same LAN.
So you're problem may be due to any one (or more) of the following -- assuming you have a similar environment to mine:
    1. Your JDK version
    2. The JDBC driver you are using
    3. The machine your Oracle database is running on
    4. Your network
    5. Your java code
    6. The current state of your Oracle database
Hope this helps you to track down your problem.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Recommendations for external drive?

I'm looking for recommendations for an external hard drive to add to my iMac G5, 17" flat panel. I want to have enough GBs to use it as a backup AND to be able to store graphics such as my photos, videos and the like — all the components of making DVD movies. Ideally, I will be able to use the external to transfer things from my computer to other computers.
My G5 has a 250 GB hard drive. I'd like the external to be large enough to contain things I haven't even thought of yet.
I'm not that savvy when it comes to the workings of computers, so ease of use/simplicity is paramount.
All recommendations (and reasons why) will be much appreciated. Thank you.
    ccCarol

Get a firewire drive and use SuperDuper! to make a clone and then regular backups (it's easy). As far as what make of drive, I have always had good luck with LaCie, and there are others who swear by Maxtor or OWC, which you can find here. In terms of size, get the largest one you can afford, in your case I would think at least 500GB. Transferring your video etc can be done to a second partition on your external drive by simply dragging and dropping the data. Partitioning is straightforward, using Disk Utility.
Let us know what you decide, hope this has been helpful,
    Miriam

Where can I get the media manager for an HP 1533C DAT tape drive in an external case to work with Rman?

  • Recommendations for hard drive enclosures

    Hi,
My G5 1.8ghz Dual Power Mac finally died today after eight years good service. I'm looking to remove the hard drive and wondered if anybody had any recommendations for enclosures that I could put it in? Is there anything I need to bear in mind when buying the enclosure or are they all pretty standard?
I've already purchased a new iMac as a replacement computer -  I just want to be able to access the data in the old hard drive.
    Thanks in advance

After going through several, I can only recommend those from OWC (Kappy's last link). I just stripped down a Western Digital Sudio Mac Edition external with a quad interface i bought seveal years ago to recover the bare drive becasue the enclosure's been nothing but a royal PITA.
The drive itself is fine but the enclosure uses a very Mac-unfriendly set of hardware that has sleep issues, lock-up issues, noise issues, won't properly mount to the Desktop, runs hot, and so on. Until I get a new OWC enclosure for the bare WD drive, I moved an older OWC external to take over the backup functions and it works like a dream. And it has a slower interface (FireWire400) but takes little longer to backup than the WD with FW800.
WD makes great internal drives--we have many in our menagerie of Macs--but their enclosures are just cheap and not Mac-friendly, even though I bought the "Mac Edition" version.

  • Recommendation for external drive for time machine

I just got my new iMac today, and it has a 1 TB hard drive. I've read that I need at least 1.5 TB to run Time Machine. Since the largest drive I own in 1 TB, it's time to upgrade. Suggestions for a good, stable drive that plays well with Time Machine?

    Pondini,
Thanks. I use my computer for, among other things, photography, and tend to fill the drive. I had to move my music files to an external drive to free up space. My current computer (the one that's being replaced) has a 500 GB hard drive and almost that much data. So I'm looking for a drive that will last me as long as the computer does.
You're going to have a choice, then, whether to get a relatively-inexpensive external, that probably won't last that long, or a relatively-expensive one that will. All hard drives fail, of course, sooner or later, and since most of us buy largely on price, the low-end externals aren't exactly bullet-proof.
My other drives (LaCie 250 GB, used only for iTunes, and OWC 500 GB, used for back-up with SuperDuper) are Firewire, and work well.
Is there an advantage to Time Capsule? I am still using an old Airport Extreme given to me by a friend years ago. Does it warrant replacing, or is Time Capsule an unnecessary expenditure?
Wireless is fairly slow, but TM can back-up without having a drive physically attached, so it's a bit of a trade-off.
A Time Capsule, of course, is a combination wireless router and disk drive. So if you already have a reliable router, it may not make sense to get another one. I've never had a TC, but prefer a separate Airport Extreme and external disk drive for it; when the drive fails, I can just get a new one.
Depending on which Mac(s) you're talking about, there may be another solution as well. If you're going to have both an iMac and a laptop, you can share a drive on the iMac with the laptop. Thus the iMac can back-up directly, and the laptop wirelessly (both have to be running Leopard or Snow, of course, and be on the same local network).
Just for comparison, doing a small (about 30 gb) full backup, I get about 40 gb/hr via F/W 400 or USB; about 21 gb/hr to a USB disk on my AEBS via Ethernet; about 13 gb/hr wirelessly. That all varies greatly, of course, depending on load, contention, interference, etc.
And you can do the large initial backup via Ethernet, then shift to wireless. There's also a fairly involved procedure where you can do the first directly-attached, then change, but it's a bit tricky and involves a lot of back and forth.

  • DPM locking Virtual Machines - Cluster Backup

    Hi All,
    Server 2012 r2
    DPM2012
    Cluster Backups
We have seen an issue I've read in a few forums where VHDs are getting locked when performing a cluster backup.  Unfortunately we're unable to reproduce the issue and it happens irregularly (once every month or so).
Within HyperV manager the status of the VM is "Backing Up" or "Creating VSS Snapshot", however the VM is unable to be managed at all.  When connecting via the console, the VM looks up, but you're unable to get to a log on screen.
I've found that by restarting the DPM agent on the host, restarting the job from DPM (which forces a failed state), you're then able to start the VM from the failover cluster manager.  Within Virtual Machine Manager, the VM is listed as "Missing",
though once you start through the cluster, it's all good.
Once the VM is up and you log on to it, there is nothing in the event log for the time the backup has been running.  The last event ID in the log, references VSS issues.
We've seen the issue on 2 VMs, which both happen to be XenDesktop Controllers, so unsure if there is something local causing it.
Wondering if anyone was able to get a result for this.  I've patched the servers and logged a job with MS, but they are being painful with the troubleshooting process and the fact it's an irregular issue which we can't replicate doesn't help.

    Hi,
Please make sure this hotfix is applied.
Hyper-V virtual machine backup leaves the VM in a locked state

  • Common Issues - Connecting (Remote Desktop) to Virtual Machine

This posting contains a list of some of the common problems that have been seen in early usage of Windows Azure Virtual Machines. These topics can be used as a guide to resolve some of the most common problems that are likely to occur when first using Windows
    Azure Virtual Machines
Potential issues that may be seen:
1.) Remote Desktop endpoint is missing
Each virtual machine that is created should have a remote desktop endpoint for the VM at port 3389. If this endpoint is deleted then a new endpoint must be created. The public port can be any available port number. The private port (the port on the VM) must
    be 3389.
2.) RDP fails with error: "The specified user name does not exist. Verify the username and try logging in again. If the problem continues, contact your system administrator or technical support."
RDP connection may fail when there are cached credentials. Please see the following article to resolve this problem:
    http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/ae35ca/windows-azure-fixing-reconnect-remote-desktop-error-the-specified-user-name-does-not-exist-verif/
3.) Failure to connect to uploaded VHD
When a VHD is uploaded to Windows Azure you must make sure that Remote Desktop is enabled on the VHD and an apporopriate firewall rule is enabled on the VM to open port 3389 (Remote Desktop port)
