Recommendation: iMac 27" 2.9 vs. 3.2Ghz?

I'm considering the new iMac 27" with the 2.9 or 3.2Ghz processor.  I know that besides the processor, there is also a 512MB and 1GB graphics card difference (as well as 200 dollars price increase for the faster processor).
I'm definitley trying to invest in a computer for the long haul (the ability of both machines to upgrade to 32GB RAM is crucial), but trying to figure out if I would actually benefit from a better grahpics card and faster processor (if I can save 200 bucks, that would be great too).
Mostly, I use my machine for sessions in Logic Pro - probably the most important program I use.  Occassionally, I run processor heavy sessions in Logic Pro, but my old 2008 Mac Pro has handled it fairly easily.
I'm not doing any video editing, but I do use Photoshop CS5 a good bit and occassionally Illustrator.
Otherwise, it's mostly watching movies and general web browsing.
Any thoughts would be great!  Thanks.

The workload you stated can be handle by the slower iMac quite nicely.
Since you did say you want last for the long haul that would make me think that the additional resources of the faster iMac might last longer. For that reason I would suggest you save up the additional $200 and go for the 3.2 GHz iMac.

  • Scanner Recommendation iMac

I am looking for a scanner recommendation for this iMac.
Photos, and documents, but not necessarily a document feeder.
what to look at what to avoid...
    Guidance and Thoughts welcome,
    The Floor is open.

I'm not an expert but I just last year completed scanning three different huge sources of old photos to digital. I can't imagine just push a button to do stacks of photos. I had to use different settings on different photo material types to get the digital how I wanted the final result.
I used an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner with Epson software because it contains Digital Ice which itself was a life saver to revive old and damaged photos.

  • Recommended iMac display calibration settings

Trying to calibrate my 2011 27" iMac with a Datacolor Spyder4 Pro.
Their calibration tool recommends a brightness of 180, but I have seen other articles from other sources recommending something closer to 120.
At 180, the display seem extremely bright - and when some of my photos are viewed on other / non-calibrated monitors, they are darker that what I would expect.
Also, I know that the iMac has an LED display, but that does not seem to be an option during the setup - is LCD the best choice?
Any recommendtions on settng for proper calibration of this display would be appreciated...
    Thanks

It is an LCD display, the back light is LED. Use LCD

  • Need advice Imac G5 Intel Duo 2 Core 2ghz will not power up DEAD

Hi all. Hoping for some friendly advice. I have an Imac G" Intel Duo 2 Core about a year old or so. My adult son was using it. Never a single issue and a very mild user. He reformatted it the other night and turned it over to me because he got a new one. I'm thrilled since I'm still using my G4 733 I've been faithfully keeping in operation since April 2001 with almost no issues. The only thing I have done is allow it to auto update everything the night before last. It's set to sleep the screen after an hour and the whole thing about 2 hours. Been working fine and just touch the keyboard and back to life.
Well this afternoon went back to take some more tutorials and it's just dead. As if it had gone to sleep but no amount of button pressing helped. Unplugged everything on USB, firewire. Using apple bluetooth KB and mouse that came with it. Both had new batteries as of other night. Left power cable loose for 10-15 minutes and no help. Held the single power button for long periods, tried holding it while plugging in to wall, tried other wall outlets. Wiggled chord to see if flakey... read articles on resetting some macs but nothing helped so far.
    Thanks

Well update I did finally get it to come on after a couple hours of coming back and fiddling. In efforts to fix it I looked up the number on the stand and it looks to be made mid 2007 which means likely no warranty.
I popped out the memory under the little bottom edge cover and dusted off some of the woolies. Didn't help but I blew into the round fan vent on the rear and a good bit of dust even came out the top edge vent. Looks like my son gathered some dust in this thing.
Still thought it would not come on but pressed again and suddenly it's ON and working but the cooling fan seems to be stuck on fast mode. I can't see any way this thing is having heat problems in my office which is a little warm but not hot.
So likely will take into service to clean and dust it out etc and maybe this fan will begin running right. This iMac has never given one ounce of trouble either. I'm posting this using the iMac
    Any additional advice appreciated,

  • What's your'e recommended iMac ?

i'm a indie game developer and designer,
    i want to buy imac,
    i have two choices,i5 late 2013(16GB ram,GTX 775M 1GB video card) and i7 late 2011(16GB ram,hd 6970  1gb video card) whats the best imac for my works?
i'm using adobe collection, unity and maya.
    thank you.
    p.s-sorry for my bad English.

    I am gonna say neither.
For game developing you need both the i7 CPU, but you need a lot better performing GPU than a 1 GB VRAM chip.
VIdeo games need a lot of both CPU AND GPU power. RAM is a factor, too, to a lesser extent, but for games, it's all about fast processing and powerful  graphics processing.
Try and find a Mac that has a fast i7 CPU and, at least, a 2 GB VRAM GPU. Some i7 IMacs had the option of a 4 GB VRAM GPU.

  • Should I Recommend iMac To A Potential New Apple Convert?

My neighbor asked my opinion about purchasing a new desktop computer. I suggested the Apple iMac and they are going to make the plunge from Windows to Apple based on my suggestion.
I have a MacBook rather than an iMac so my only reference regarding the iMac is based on what I read on these forums and web sites like MacWorld etc.
Is this a good time for my neighbors to purchase an iMac? I've been reading about people having issues with the display, and possibly a new line coming out in the near future, as well as several other issues.
I would very much appreciate comments and feedback from they folks here in the forum.
    Thanks !
    Chuck :- )

    1. The Apple Store will migrate your DATA from your old Windows computer to your new Mac for free. For example, Word docs, PowerPoint presentations, text file, photos, etc.
    2. The Apple Store will *not migrate applications* that run under Windows to your new Mac.
    3. Do not confuse data with applications.
    4. "one particular program on her current computer that she would continue to need"
    a. In my opinion, Boot Camp is a crappy solution (unless you are a gamer and need unfettered access to the hardware).
    b. A better solution is Parallels or Fusion. I have P on 1 iMac and F on the other. I (repeat I) prefer Fusion from VMWare, however, your mileage may vary.
    c. I have one application (WebTrends) that only runs under Windows. I have Fusion and Windows XP Home on my iMac just to run this one application. It works perfectly. In fact. my virtual Windows computer boots faster than any real physical Windows computer that I ever owned. (I came back to Mac OS X in 2005.)
    5. I would buy VMWare's Fusion and Windows XP Home (from Mwave.com for $85 USD) and run the one particular program.
Then, I would start looking for alternatives that run under Mac OS X (see VersionTracker.com/macosx/)

  • Lion compatibility with iMac ?

I have the iMac 4.1- intel core duo 2Ghz , 2 GbRam; can I run Lion ? troublefree ? only Lion will work with iCloud, MobileMe will be gone within months; so unless my'07 iMac will run Lion , I will be forced to buy a current iMac if I want to provide linkage to my "new" ('10) MacBook. Is this a case of progress leaving those behind who funded the progress ?

Sorry, Lion will not run on an Intel core duo system. You need an Intel core 2 duo or later system.  Lion requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

  • IMac freezing after upgrade

Hi, I have an iMac (20 inch, mid 2007, Intel 2GHz), recently upgraded to 4GB RAM and  Snow Leopard (previously 10.4)
I'm now getting frequent freezes, which can only be rectified by powering down, then on again.
Prior to some of the freezes, I'm getting the following message on the console:
Microsoft Word[162] *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x221320 of class NSThread autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Some Kingston versions have caused many problems. If it is Kingston's value RAM, then remove and replace it as that is one that consistenly caused issues. I'd recommend a higher quality RAM from reputable resellers such as Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com), OWC even will give you a trade in value on your old RAM and offers very high quality tech support.

  • Intel iMac - won't start - grey screen & progress bar

I have a 2006 Intel iMac - 20" model, Intel Core Duo, 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, etc.  It was one of the very earliest Intel iMacs.  Kept updated, running OS 10.6, etc.
It has worked extremely well for over 5 years - apart from the Superdrive being temperamental sometimes - but has suddenly gone wrong.
Last week the machine completely froze for no apparent reason.  I had to force a reboot.  This failed - grey screen and the grey spinning wheel (if that's what it's called), indefinitely.
Forced reboot again and this time held down the shift key to go into safe boot mode.  This time it was successful, and I was able to get to the logon screen & log myself in.  I opened Disk Utility & attempted to do some diagnostics but the machine froze again.
Looking around various other forum postings...I rebooted the machine in single user mode and was able to get to the command line to type 'fsck -fy' to attempt to fix disk problems.  This failed repeatedly, with an error message 'invalid node structure'.
I tried to boot my machine from the OS X disc but my Superdrive refused to play ball - it would not read the disc (or any other disc for that matter, including a copy of DiskWarrior that I have).
I have now got hold of an external DVD drive in the hope that this would show up as a boot device when I switch the machine on while holding the option key down.  No such luck - the drive powers up ok (power via USB) but I'm not given the option to boot from it - in fact that screen doesn't appear at all.
All that happens now on powering up - regardless of what I do - is the grey apple symbol appears and a progress bar beneath it.  The progress bar gets stuck about 5% of the way along, and then after about 10 minutes it disappears and is replaced with the grey spinning wheel thingy.  And then it just gets stuck - nothing else happens.
    HELP!
All my important data is backed up on an external drive via Time Machine, so that should be safe, but I'm desperate to get the machine running again.
One thing that occurred to me is that I've had a program called ReFit installed on the machine which allowed me to run the machine as dual boot etc. (and I do have a couple of other small partitions on the drive, not currently used) but the ReFit welcome screen stopped appearing a couple of weeks ago for some reason.  I'm wondering if this has somehow messed things up...?
    Grateful for any suggestions...
    Thanks,
    Alan.

For the drive, you should be OK with any SATA 2 at 3 MB/s transfer speed. You could also use a SATA 1, no jumpers needed. (Not SATA 3 - can't be jumpered down.) The early 2006 Intels were 1.5 MB/s -- at least the drives were, so I'm assuming the SATA controller on the logic board was also. Might just be SATA 2 hadn't yet been introduced and can run the faster SATA 3 without jumpers. My guess is not. You should be able to set jumpers on the drive for backwards compatibility. You'll have to contact the drive manufacturer or go to their website for that info.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
As for the superdrive, I'd contact the manufacturer to check on compatibility.
Glad I'm able to help. BTW, in case you haven't noticed, maybe you want to have a look here.

  • Macbook Pro 15" or iMac 27"

    Hello,
I am finally taking the leap and will be buying a Mac.  I have no idea what I'm doing nor do I know anything about computers besides running programs I use on a normal basis. I'm a student learning to become an Interior Designer who used Autocad (mostly), Photoshop, and Illistator.  I orignially wanted a 13" but I found the screen to maybe be a little smaller than I would prefer.  I was hoping the Apple Community could HELP ME!
As I said, I use Autocad a lot, along with Photoshop and Illustrator on ocasian, now these programs will only installed into my computer. I like to save all of my files(work) to External Hard drives.  I have no idea how these computers would handle the programs and wanted some guidance into this invesetment. When I visited the apple store I felt as the staff was trying to upsell me into specs I dont even need. Does anyone out there use these applications and if so what computer and specs you recomend?  OR even if your know something about computer this would greatly help me.
    Thank you
My school sent me this as "Suggested" requriments from each program I use which made me so much more confused.

Yes, either the 27" iMac or 15" MacBook Pro will be fast enough to run AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Illustrator well. You do not need to be confused by the requirements because basically all new Macs meet most of the requirements already. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that whichever one you get, looking at the system requirements for the programs, you will want to order either computer with at least 8GB of RAM and a 256GB internal storage. If your budget allows, you can increase those amounts, but you don't have to.
AutoCAD has one additional requirement, a mouse. I think this is because CAD programs make heavy use of the right mouse button and even the middle/scrollwheel buttons. This will be easy to get because you can connect just about any USB mouse to a Mac, even a $5 PC mouse will work.
The Illustrator requirements mention a DVD drive. Remember that the iMac and MacBook Pro do not have an optical drive. But I am confused by the requirement because Adobe software can generally be installed from a download so that an optical disc drive is not needed. You may need to get further clarification from your school about this. If for some reason the school does not provide software by download and only provides the programs on optical disc, you can just buy a USB optical drive and plug it in.

  • MBP vs iMac

What do you recommend, iMac + iPad mini or MacBook Pro 15 "(without the retina)? I want to edit film and images, and I want to have one device with me when Im not home, for example, are on a vacation or just photographing.

"and I want to have one device with me when Im not home, for example, are on a vacation or just photographing."
You're not describing an iMac that's for sure.

  • Can I improve my 2009 iMac ?

I have  24" iMac purchased in 2009 , came with 2.66 Ghz, Intel core 2 Duo, 4 GB memory, Ive recently upgraded it to Maverick 10.9 and as I write there is another software update in progress!
I've never had a problem with this computer and always recommend iMac or apple to friends , my question is , can this computer be upgraded by an ssd drive or whatever they are called ! would I notice the difference? I dont play any games just use my computer for general internet use , letter writing etc
I dont really want to buy another mac!

well if upgrade yor ram to 8gb or 16gb if you can support that much on your mother borad
or you could get all your inportent files and copy them to a hard drive and format your mac
or maybe its time to upgrade macs
a ssd would help in start up and copying files and it would load programs quicker and the ram would help you alot since you got mavericks uses about 2gb of ram so 8gb would improve your performance
