Recommendation on spell checkers

as the subject line suggests i am looking for recommendations on spell checking engines for Java by anyone who could share their experiences with me. I did a search on google for this and came up with 70,000 odd hits. a search on the fourms seems to generate entries for people who are mucking about writing their own spell checkers as homework or for fun but neither really helps me.
so i am hoping that someone might be able to say about the different options available online "that's good" or "i never heard about that one" or even the "yikes! don't touch that piece of junk"
the first few i found were.
http://www.jspell.com/jspell.html
http://www.wintertree-software.com/dev/ssce/javasdk.html
http://xde.net/xq/tool.spellchecker/qx/index.htm
but feel free to tell me about whatever.
other than just how much you liked or disliked a particular product i am interested in knowing if and how easy or difficult it is to include my own specialized "dictionaries" of words with these products. i am not so interested in switching languages but in having dictionaries that include the terminology of the particular demographic that my application is built for.

I'm pretty pleased with the one from Keyoti
http://www.keyoti.com/products/rapidspell/
They do a JSP one too, but I have only tried the
evaluation of that. The tech support was quick, no
complaints!
I guess it depends on exactly what ur looking for??
thanks for the feedback. i am not looking for JSP but I just wanted to hear someone say something positive about any of these. as i stated previously the ability to alter the "dictionary" of words is important to me so i'm glad to see it in the component.

  • How can I enforce automatic spell checking for selected fields of data entered by form users?

I'd like to be able to enforce spell checking of selected fields in the forms that I've created using LiveCycle Designer 8.2 at run time, as opposed to design time.  I understand the version LCD 8 has a nifty new spell checker for form designers.  But I want to spell check the data entered by users using Acrobat Reader.  And I want to enforce the spell checking automatically on selected fields only.
Presently it seems that users filling in my forms, must know how to manually right-click on each field and select "Spell Check" from the resulting dialog box in order to check for spelling errors in the data the user has entered in the form.
I would like to discover a way to enforce spell checking in selected fields, just as I am able to do in forms created using Acrobat Pro.  In Acrobat Pro, I can set a property for each field to require spell checking.  but that feature seems to be missing in Livecycle Designer.
I've check the Object model for XFA forms hoping that I might find a method I can call with a Javascript, to check spelling based on an event such as onBlur.  But I haven't found a spell check method.
Am I missing something simple?  Is there a way to set each field to be spell checked when a user is filling in the form using the free Acrobat Reader?
Our users are not sophisticated and requiring them to spell check each field separately just won't cut it...
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -David Bartholomew

    Hi David,
    Two things...
At design time set the locale of the form to one that Acrobat spell checks. For example English (US) and English (UK) locales have spell checkers; however English (Ireland) does not. Check the Warnings tab to see if spell checking is supported for your locale.
If your form locale supports spell checking then you can go to the button script below.
If you form locale does NOT support spell checking then Stephanie has a great work around to force spell checking (http://forums.adobe.com/message/2233945#2233945).
Bring a regular button onto the form and in the click event have the following:
    app.execMenuItem("Spelling:Check Spelling");
Which will open the spell checker for all fields.  Thanks to Paul for extracting all of the accessible menu items (http://forums.adobe.com/message/1912914#1912914).
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • No Spell Checker in Pages 3.0.2

I am running Pages 3.0.2 in Leopard 10.5.2 on a Dual 1.8 Ghz PowerMac with 1.5 Gig of RAM.
I do not have any external Spell Checkers installed.
I have been completely unable to run any Spelling Checks.
I always get "Cannot Contact Spell Checker"
If I have Check Spelling as you Type selected, I get that message about every 10 seconds.
    What is UPPPP????
    Any Solutions or Work Arounds??
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
    Ted

    Theodore,
You may not have any external spell checkers installed now, but I wouldn't be surprised if you once did. And when you disabled and trashed it, it left behind some remnants. I'll bet that's what Pages is finding.

  • How to install check speller for Serbian language in Linux Mint

Hello, I use Thunderbird 31.6.0 on my Linux Mint 17. I tried to follow the instructions that are on this web site for installing new dictionaries spell checkers but it does not work. It says that it's not available for my platform. However on my Windows computer it says that this version is not supported. In comments of that plug in someone explained workaround. You should download the add-on, rename extension to .zip, unpack it and copy the unpacked files to C:/Program Files/Mozilla Thunderbird/dictionaries. I did this and it worked!
Is there any way to do similar trick with Thunderbird for Linux Mint?

Why don't you try the same workaround as for the Windows version?
Locate the Thunderbird installation directory and extract the .xpi in the 'dictionaries' sub-directory.

  • How do I get Pages to recognize the Norwegian language in spell-check?

I'm Ameican and I got my beautiful MacBook air with me in Norway.  I use Pages to write notes and do homework, but it doesn't have Norwegian as a language amunst the spellcheck dictionary.  It has Swedish and Danish ofcours, but it's not the same.  Is there any way to get a Norwegian (bokmål) dictionary for Pages?

You may also add OpenOffice spell checkers, there is a long list of languages, including Norwegian. These may be used with other apps too. Downloaded OO dics have the extension .oxt, manually change it to .zip, confirm when asked that you really wish to do this. Open the resulted folder and take from there .dic and .aff files, and move them to /Library/spelling. You may thus have as many spell checking dics as you wish. They may be selected in all the apps based on the Cocoa engine, including Pages.
In the attached screenshot, in the lower part you may see these dics.
P.S. I am not very familiar with Norwegian, but it seems the article does not specify how to download and install OO dics.

  • Spell Checking occasionally works with Pages 3.03 update

I have been experiencing problems with spell checking since the most recent iWork update. If I save an old document as a new file, spell checking for modifications doesn't work. If I create a document from scratch, spell checking works until I paste text from other sources. This is a very strange problem.
I have searched the support forums and have seen many solutions that seem to work for others, but most seem to relate to have multiple Spell Checkers installed or having corrupt preference files. That is not my situation. I would appreciate any insight on this issue.

I have found that my spelling is set to Swedish as default. If I use English in my document, have all styling in set to English spelling check, i still get pasted text to Swedish. I have to select the new text and use the styles or in the Inspector tell it to be spell checked in English. I guess it has to do with which language I use for the System.

  • Is it possible to enable 'spell checker' option with HTML Editor ?

The spell checker option is available with Text Area with Spell Checker item, but that spell checker doesn't come with the HTML Editor.
Is it possible to somehow make it available for the HTML Editor ?
I know there are some browser addin spell checkers, but a client instance doesn't allow end users to install such for their IE browser.

I would also like to know if this is possible?

  • SPELL CHECKER

As typing in a spell checker mode.
Is it possible to have the "red underline" also make a sound. Example, at the same time as the red is displayed, sound a "tink" or other user selectable sound.
This will alert the user to look at the screen and "delete" the misspelled item then as later. Correcting at that point then will avoid having to use the mouse to return to the error.
    Thanks

Oh, I can toss in my two cents here.... I've used Spell Catcher Plus for years on my Window's (and feel now, that I wouldn't even want to own a computer without it). They came out now, with a Mac version (although not as good as the windows version) but that's really splitting hairs, I would suggest forgetting all about "everything else" and giving it a try... It's like one of those things were I would say "metaphorically speaking" that if you don't like it 100,000% I would pay you back the money myself... however you can try it for free at download.com - but - just to give credit where credit is do - nothing on the planet has even come close to the Searching Ability of Franklins Speaking edition "spellers" (absolutely STELLAR) I even to this day need to go use it when the spell checkers on the computer cant find my spelling mistake. Boy if I could work for spell catcher plus, Franklin dictionary, and Snagit - I would make myself the Frankenstein - the likes of which no one has ever seen.... Send mail to get Snagit to make an Apple version (I already have Snapz) Snagit rules; but I'm keeping my desktop a Windows....

  • Spell Checker in OA Page?

    Hi All,
I have an requirement to implement the spell check in OA framework Page.
Could anyone tell me whether this is possible?????
    Thanks In Advance........

    Hello JJ,
Not sure if this will suit, but there are a few browser spell checkers out there. I've seen one called ieSpell but I haven't really used it so can't comment on how good/bad it is.
Google shows 600,000+ hits for +browser +"spell check" so it may be worth trying a few out if this is a viable option for you.

  • Looking for spell check solution with IE8 and apex 4.1

Hello: The most recent solution I find to implement spell check in IE8 and APEX is 2 years old - here: http://mattball.wordpress.com/2010/06/07/apex-spell-checker/
It shows how to integrate Jspell with apex. I will likely try the JSpell Evolution since it gives the little squiggle. Does anyone have success with this or another solution? Does it work within tabular forms?
    Thanks, Hawk

Were you able to get JSpell installed? I am stuck in the same boat - I need a spell checker. The documentation is 2+ years old and on an Oracle 10.1.x database.
I am running Oracle 11g on a Linux installation with APEX 4.1
And I had to reinstall the OS on my development machine because when I installed IE Spell as a test, it installed some MALWARE at the same time. So that isn't even an option.
Has anyone tried any other spell checkers now that Oracle has deprecated spell checking in the Rich Text Editor for 4.1? Even Google Toolbar's spell check doesn't work with CKEDitor 3 as it has been implemented with APEX. On a standard CKEditor (outside of APEX), it works great but not within APEX (thanks Oracle!!)
    Please advise.

  • Alert! Can't find spell checker

After installing the latest security update, I am getting the "Spinning beach ball" in Mail.app and then the message:
    Alert! Can't find spell checker
Mail.app is unable to find its built-in spell checker (AppleSpell.service).
However, AppleSpell.service is where it should be, but it appears to be corrupt and won't start up to run in the background (as normal).
A workaround is to select "never" in the preferences of "Check Spelling" in Mail.app's preferences/Composing.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Can I get a non-corrupt version of the AppleSpell.service and try overwriting mine?

The "couldn't contact spell checker" error has been brought up in this forum many times (at least three times in the last two days). The error usually is the result of having remnants of older versions of third-party spell checkers, most commonly, Spell Catcher, but others have been identified. The solution is to remove those remnants and/or install the most recent version.

  • Alert warning - Can't contact spell checker

Does any one else have this problem when using Pages? The alert notice comes up on the screen repeatedly and then causes Pages to freeze. It is most frustrating. I have reloaded iWorks, downloaded all the update but nothing seems to change. Help any one please.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This was a frequent topic when iWork '08 was first released. It is related to third-party spell checkers such as SpellCatcher. If they haven't been updated to the newest versions, this error comes up, especially when opening Word documents.
If you have SpellCatcher or another spell checker installed, I would just try disabling it first & see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, do a Spotlight search for "spell" & see what comes up. Trash anything that looks like it belongs to a third-party spell checker & restart your Mac.

  • "Couldn't Contact Spell Checker"

What does this error mean? Why won't it go away! I do not want to change the language region every time I open a word document from the Internet.. This is a problem that needs a permanent fix... I am a few days shy of buying MS Office 08 because of this issue. I need a operable word document program.

  • Pages Alert "Couldn't contact Spell Checker."

Out of the clear blue, after much use, Pages 3.0.2 Gives me an Alert "Couldn't contact Spell Checker" and the Spell checker does not work anymore in pages. However, the spell checker woks in all other programs I use. How do I get the spell checker back in pages?
I've cleaned caches and repaired permissions and no change. English is the language being used.
    Thanks

But I don't think that's the problem you're experiencing. I've seen several users here with the problem of the spell checker not working in Pages. All of them were fixed by deleting the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & then restarting Pages.
