Recommendations for 5.1 speakers for Apple TV

Hello
I'm looking to buy a set of surround speakers to attach to the Optical Audio out of the Apple TV. I would like as simple a set up as possible rather than a full-blown home theater system with amplifier. Does anyone have any recommendations for speakers that would work?
I'm finding it difficult to find this online.... I can find a lot of 5.1 computer speakers, but it is unclear whether most of them have an optical audio out or support true 5.1 audio. If anyone has found a speaker set up that works well I would really appreciate any recommendations.
Many thanks!

I can't really suggest any particular equipment, but you are going to need some sort of amplifier/processing unit. Speakers require an analogue signal, the output from the Apple TV is digital, you can't just plug speakers into the Apple TV. You may find some speakers with everything you need built in, but I've not seen such speakers.

My experience with steaming with Apple products is done from iTunes, my music and video files from iTunes on my iMac or video from Apple Store. I sync photos and music from iTunes with iPhone, iPod Touch and AppleTV.
I have a 2TB external disk that has my iTunes library on it. All my music, TV and movies. It is hosted on my iMac
I do not know if mkv video can be played on the iPad, maybe there is an app that can do it. According to the iPad specifications the video files have to be "Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format"

  • Replacement speakers for Pavilion g7-1338dx

    Hello.
Looked everywhere for this part, HP, GOOGLE, everywhere and I dont see anyone that carries these? Any ideas? I appreciate it.

    Hey aklapr,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
For purchasing replacement speakers for your Pavilion G7-1338dx, I have included the 'Maintenance and Service Guide'. Please scroll to page 57, it will list the replacement part number, as well the instructions on how to replace the speakers.
Now one option for purchasing the replacement speakers is the HP PartSurfer. If you are unable to find the part available there. I would suggest contacting technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl. For purchasing options.

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • What are the best AirPlay speakers for Apple devices?

What are the best AirPlay speakers for Apple devices? I would like to get some good speakers to be used with my iPod, iPhone and iPad. Ideally, they should be able to play using AirPlay and be quite powerful, but with a good design if possible.
I am particularly interested in the Fidelio range of speakers by Philips.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Best is going to be a matter of opinion.  What environment are the speakers going to be used in? How large is the room? What type of music are you going to play? What features/functions would you like in the speakers? What price range are you looking for?  All of these are going to effect which speakers will best fit your needs.

  • What One Specification Should I Look for When Buying Optical 5.1 Speakers for the iMac 27" i7?

Hi. I have an analog 5.1 (it came from my previous PC setup) now but only the subwoofer works, the controller for its satellite speakers maybe have been busted by the high voltage from the outlet (I've since gotten a nice AVR). If replace it since the late 2009 iMac and Macs in general only do surround sound (5.1 or higher) if it's not analog. I've read somewhere that is should be digital or optical.
When I look for the specification that'll make this Mac do 5.1 surround, what should I look for in the speaker's specifications. I believe the non-analog 5.1 speakers are way more expensive, I'll probably buy one used but what brand and model can anyone recommend that's not that expensive, iMac/Mac compatible and will be easy to setup (you just plug it in into it's the headphone jack at the back) that'll do 5.1 on Lion and Snow Leopard (I have both installed for backup OSes and experiments). Thank you in advance.

  • Speakers for my imac

i want to get a pair of speakers for my imac 27 inch late 2013 as i like listening to my music very loud the built in ones are a great sound but they ain't loud to what i like can anyone recommend a good pair of speakers good bass and loud thanks

It is all a matter of personal taste - and how much you want to spend.  The Apple Store sells a large selection of speaker systems for you iMac.
Personally (and I do mean this), I like Bose and the rich quality of the sound I get.  Others perfer Bowers & Wilkins or even Bang & Olufsen (if you really do have deep pockets), but the best thing to do is to go have a demonstration of these and others in a store (take your favourite CD with you!!!!).

  • Recommend an external hard drive for a backup for me?

For the first time since I've owned any computer PC or Mac, I need to purchase a external hard drive so I can back up my computer. Over the years I have never backed anything up and have lost some things which at the time wasn't too important. But now with this computer I have lots of music and some very important pictures to me and videos of my grandson I do not want to lose, internet bookmarks etc. etc. I have a program called Time Machine on this computer which I assume is to back up my computer contents. I know nothing about external drives for the purpose of backups. Can someone recommend a reasonably priced one for a beginner and where do I purchase it? Online? Through Apple?
    Thanks

I have two LaCie drives - you can check them out here:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10033
Depending on which brand you decide to purchase, you may have to format them for a Mac, which is very easily accomplished by using Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility). At that same time, you may also want to partition it which will create 2 or more partitions on the same drive - each one will act as though it is a separate hard drive. I have mine partitioned and use one just to drag and drop (copy) an extra copy of important pictures or files on it. I use another partition to create a bootable clone using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner (simple version is free). A bootable clone means that if there is a major problem with your internal hard drive and you can't start up with it, you can start up with the bootable clone because it is an exact and complete copy of your entire system. Then there is the option to use Time Machine; personally I don't use it, so someone else will need to chime in with it. It copies a lot of things and does it automatically every hour or so I believe, but you cannot boot up your computer with it (that is why I've decided not to use it).
Again, depending on the brand you buy, you should not have to install any software that comes with it. An external hard drive should simply show up as an icon on your desktop once you attach it; after that, open up Disk Utility and make sure it is formatted correctly and partition it if desired.
Also, as far as speed is concerned, an external hard drive with Firewire is faster than with USB connections, so keep that in mind. Mine is both Firewire 400 and 800 as well as USB, so I am covered no matter how/where it want to plug it in.

  • Can you recommend an external hard drive for me?

I have a white macbook- nothing special. the cd burner is broken for the zillionth time so apple will be mailing it away for repairs. they suggested i back everything up before turning it over to them. there isnt much on it except my itunes library, some pictures, and a few word/excel docs. here are my questions:
1- what size external hard drive do i need?
2- is there a cheaper/easier way to do this?
3- is there a recommended brand for macs? i heard western digital was good, but several mac users gave it terrible reviews.
    thanks so much!!

If you aren't sure how big your computer's drive is, select the hard drive icon on the desktop and Get Info from the File menu. At the top of the Get Info window you'll see the icon and below that some disclosure triangles - the second one pointing to General. If the triangle isn't pointing down, click on it and you'll see information about your drive. Look for Capacity and that is the formatted capacity.
You'll want a drive that is at least as big as your computer's drive so you can back up everything. Some people only back up their data but that, in my opinion, is silly. Look for a drive that is slightly larger that your drive's capacity. For example, you might see your capacity is 78.7 GB so get at least an 80GB drive. I say at least since you might want to consider using this new external drive with TimeMachine so you can always have an up to date backup. With TimeMachine you should get a drive that is at least twice as large as the data you are backing up.
The cheapest way to do it is to run down to your local discount store and pick up whatever they are selling. That's the cheapest but not necessarily the best. I strongly recommend that you buy a drive that includes FireWire - getting one with FireWire and USB ports will provide a good deal of flexibility. I also strongly recommend that you buy a drive with an external power supply. I recommend drives that derive their power from the computer only when the drive needs to be portable too. A backup drive isn't usually portable.
Name brands such as Seagate, Iomega, and Western Digital are all easy to find and okay. I think everyone has been burned by one brand or another so just about every manufacturer will get slammed with a particular horror story.

No but there's a link to reset your password. Etc etc..
This is the email I got.

  • 1 set of speakers for tv and streaming

I was going to buy an AppleTV and connect a set of external speakers to my tv, so any devices connected to the tv will use those speakers, but what if I want to stream audio from an ipod or macbook to those same speakers?
I could buy a A/V receiver that is Airplay compatible or ...?   Any other suggestions?

I'm still confused.  If the speakers in question are connected to the tv, then wouldn't the tv have to be powered on all the time even if those speakers are 'selected' by the Apple TV.  If so, I'd have to connect the speakers to an Airplay base station or Airplay express and link that with the Apple TV so I don't have to have the tv powered on when I just want to stream music from my macbook.
Does that make sense?  I don't want to buy 2 separate sets of speakers for 2 different tasks - i.e. 1 set connected to an Airplay express so I can listen to streaming music stored on my Macbook and another set of speakers connected to the optical audio output of my plasma tv when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player or Dish receiver.  That's why I thought the Apple TV would be able to do both.  I suppose it can, but it just means I'd have to keep my plasma tv on all the time, even when I'm listening to streaming music.  The only other set up I can think of is to buy a 1st gen. Apple TV and direct the output to the Airplay express speakers when I want to watch a movie on my DVD player.
I'm not sure if I'm making this too complicated.
