Recommendations for a good Java IDE...

I've been using a few different editors. I tried NetBeans, it's not bad but seems a bit slow. I just downloaded Eclipse, I'm not sure what to think of it yet. Which is the best?

At my job we use eclispe as company standard but at home i use Netbeans, i like it a lot, it compiles .jps, it has a good inferface to create GUI's, it has html code completions etc
But the best IDE is the one that you feel comfortable with and you dont turnaround to much to find what you want.
Eclipse has a strong point, its the powerful search engine also provides some very useful options for code refactoring.

  • Looking for the BEST java IDE

    Hi
We're evaluating java IDE's (especially JBuilder & VisualAge) for a Client-Server project that uses RMI (there is no Web development\HTML\Bens involved)
I would appreciate any recommendations, suggestions, articles or reviews that you have.
    thanks in Advance...

Both of these IDEs are very solid pieces of software each with their own advantages.
JBuilder is similar to most other java IDEs. It takes less time to become productive in JBuilder than it will take in Visual Age because Visual Age takes a non-standard approach to java development. Be sure to look at a recent version of JBuilder because early version support for remote debugging was very poor.
Visual Age has some of the most advanced java development features of any IDE I've ever used. The downside of this functionality is that it takes quite a bit of time to get accustomed to the IDE. Visual Age doesn't use files like most other IDEs opting instead to provide a completely separate archiving mechanism called a Repository.
If you're looking for something that will take very little time to learn, JBuilder is the better choice. It doesn't have as many features as Visual Age but it's also a lot more like most IDEs and has just about everything most java projects will need.
If you're team is composed primarily of Sr. developers and you're willing to take the time to learn the IDE, Visual Age is well worth the investment. It's a pain to learn but once you learn it you won't want to go back to file based development.
Of course, if you're looking for something between these 2 in terms of features and complexity, download the community edition of forte and give it a whirl.

  • I need a recommendation for a good word processor

i have two macs at home which are fully converted to pages and keynote. my family has now fully converted from using clunky office 2004 to iwork. i bought a used ibook g3 for $275 and i thought i could use it for writing essays at school. and its pretty light at 4.9lbs after all (well it's the lightest mac around). i installed iwork thinking it could run smoothly. i found out that when i begin typing, the words take forever to print on the screen. it gets even slower while moving paragraphs around. so now i thought i would have to run word 2k4. that's no problem since i have been used to using word for years. well, as a matter of fact, i can't stand word one bit. pages is just so much better and cleaner, i simply can't take the user interface MS has built. since i am on a 12in screen, the Word window is awkward and clunky. so, i am now thinking of getting appleworks, but that software is older than panther, so i dont know how powerful it really is.
if anyone can recommend me a good app for just writing essays, please tell me. is there a way to make pages run faster, or make word look better? thanks, gabe.
what i am doing now is using word to type and copying everything to pages so it can be formatted better. its pretty slow, annoying but it gets the job done.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
For your G3 iBook, I recommend AppleWorks 6. You should have received the original disks with that iBook & those disks include AppleWorks. If you didn't get them & can't get them from the seller, you could call Apple & ask for a replacement set of original disks. There will be a small charge, but I'd consider it worthwhile just to have a set of the originals. If you want to buy AppleWorks 6, try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name).

  • Recommendations for a good spectrum/frequency analyzer

Hello looking for a good spectrum/frequency analyzer AU plug-in
    Many thanks Fatal Movez

It's not a plugin, and it's expensive, but possibly the best thing out there is SpectraFoo.
Even though it's not a plugin, it works fine with Logic via SoundFlower.
At the other end of the price scale, there is Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst, a free plugin. But I'm not sure if it shows you a lot more than what you can already see in Logic's MultiMeter. I wonder if you've tried that?

  • Searching for a good java debugger

    Hi all,
I am a new java developer, i was used to work with c++ builder. I am developing java projects without ide help (plain text, actually with JCreator) . I want to find a good ide debugger (like c++ builder's debugger). I tried to use JBuilder but i can not import my existing project to the JBuilder debugger. Do you know any ide debugger that i can import my project? What about Forte? I have not used it yet. May be tips about importing my .java files in the JBuilder debugger.
    Thank you for advance, Kostas.

Careful, I might put you on the list too! -:) No just
kidding but blown up wannabe Java experts like
LadyFoxy and Sscotties should be very careful.
Eventually they'll meet the Nightmare Bwitch, and then
    it's over!me! me!
    do me next :)
to OP, a debugger you ask for? well not exactly the thingie you're looking for, but in some cases quite useful debugger is a omniscient debugger:
    http://www.lambdacs.com/debugger/debugger.html
... but its still experimental or something, so it might not yet be fine tuned for every task, it's the idea that counts...

  • Recommendation for a good "TO DO" app for Desktop/iPhone sync

    HI,
Can someone please recommend a good app for syncing desktop to iphone to do list.
    Thank you.

There is a nice free application that I use. It is Zenbe Lists. It actually syncs with a free web account that can be accessed from your desktop. Maybe not what you're looking for, but what do you have to lose if it's free? Good luck!

  • 4.6C to ERP6.0 Upgrade - what are the recommendations for Unicode and Java

    Hi All,
    Forgive such a basic question.
We are just beginning to look at our ERP6.0 upgrade and am unclear whether we should convert to unicode at the same time, and also what are the uses for the Java stack.
    Unicode?
We are a single language Latin-1 site so don't need Unicode. However will it become mandatory eventually? Are we better, if we have the opportunity now, just to convert. Also I believe the Java stack is only Unicode. Does ASCII ABAP and Java Unicode complicate things?
    Java?
Will we need it? We are proposing a technical upgrade from our 4.6c Javaless environment. Where does Java come in to play in ERP6.0? Doesn't it increase greatly the iSeries HW requirements? (I'm looking at a 2 way 550 at the moment)
Look forward to hearing your views.
    Regards
    Steve

    Hi Stephen,
at the moment, in a latin-1 environment Unicode is for old customers not a requrirement. This might change in 5-10 years ...
Java: No problem at all with ASCII (in latin-1 environments)
=> there is no need for you, but you could go for it. We did several Unicode conversions already and these Latin-1 conversions are pretty easy and simple especially on iSeries, because of the special InPlace Unicode Conversion.
... but this can be done at any time ...

The usual recommendation is the one made by Sothink... tjust realize there are no guarantees, but hearsay says your chances are apparently better with that one.

  • Recommendations for a good HD video camera?

I've just purchased the new 17" Macbook Pro with HD-screen.
I need a camera that records in HD, and is relatively easy to edit together - also allowing me to watch the final cut on my HD Sony Bravia, but be able to burn a good quality DVD to send back to England (the film's of my new baby!)
I've hear the new Sony's are a bugger to edit with, should I be looking at an HDV camera?
    I'm a little confused!
    Thanks....

As I said before, I'm a Mac newbie, so I won't pretend to know anything. But after reading your post, I connected my Sony HDR-SR12 via USB, turned it on, got a dialog on the camera about a USB connection had been found and did I want to connect to the camera's hard disk or the camera's memory stick (of which I have none) so I selected hard disk. Within moments, the computer registered "no name" disk on the desktop, and Adobe Bridge CS3 had indexed the contents of the camera's hard disk and was asking me what I wanted to download. I quit Bridge and its Photo Download, and opened iMovie. Within seconds, MUCH less than a minute, it had indexed the camera's hard drive and generated thumbnails of everything on the hard drive, and was asking me which ones I wanted to import.
I don't have any idea why this was so different between you and me. I don't know whether it has something to do with different Macs, different versions of OS X, or something else. All I can say is that compared to my previous (non-HD) Sony camcorder (mini-DV), this one that uses both a large hard drive (120 GB) and memory sticks of up to 16 GB is simply a dream. It's fast, easy, there are no worries about tapes jamming or getting damaged, somehow, and it's almost instantaneous going back and forth through different recordings on a hard drive, without having to rewind or fast-forward a tape. I am as enthusiastic as you are, only in reverse: I MUCH prefer this camera with a large hard drive and hope I never again have to mess with tapes!
I'm really curious about why your experience with that SR5 was so very different than mine with the SR12. I can't believe the cameras are significantly different in that regard, and I wonder if it's something about our Mac setups. Maybe someone else can offer a guess.

  • Recommendation for a good USB/Firewire hub

I have too many potential peripheral devices, and need more firewire and USB ports for my G5 iMac. I've read mixed reviews of the Belkin "mini" hub, including the fact that it is not powered.
Does anyone use one of these?
    is it good/bad/mediocre?

There is a nice free application that I use. It is Zenbe Lists. It actually syncs with a free web account that can be accessed from your desktop. Maybe not what you're looking for, but what do you have to lose if it's free? Good luck!

  • Looking for recommendations for a good small color laser printer

My trusty Canon inkjet is on its last legs and I am considering getting a color laser printer.
I need it to have ethernet so all computers on my home LAN can print to it.
I am currently looking at the Samsung CPL-315W and the HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni Printer.
Pros: Samsung is smaller than the HP
    Samsung toner is cheaper
HP print quality is rumored to be better
    Cons:
Samsung toner is more difficult to find locally
HP printer is more expensive ($309 compared to $199)
If you have any advice or experience with these printers, I would appreciate it.
    Chris
    Austin, TX

    hi cejones,
Did you end up finding a printer?
I'm looking as well. I have the Samsung clp-510 and while it's very reliable, the UI for mac is terrible. So terrible in fact that I still have it connected to a PC b/c their UI is much better for controlling colour etc..
i'm looking for a wireless solution.
    Cheers

  • Font Book in 10.7 is retarded. I need recommendations for a good font manager for OSX

On our 10.5.8 G5, I'm using Extensis Suitcase.
Our new Mac Pro is running 10.7 and I need to install fonts, but Font Book seems to cry about just about every font I want to install. So, where are the best font managers for OSX as of right now? Is Extensis still the best? Thoughts? Thanks,
    Chris

I know what your're talking about. I used to do phone support for an ISP.
Anyway, this last one that has me up in arms says this:
"1 serious error was found. Do not use this font."
This is in the Font Validation window when I try to install into Font Book. It shows the font name "Serpentine-Bold-Bold.ttf" in the window with an expand triangle to the left. To the far right is a red circle with a white X in it. Ahh screw it, here's a screenshot....
This font works perfectly fine on our G5 running 10.5.8
