Recommendations for a new (used) laptop

I want to upgrade what hp versions would you recommend.
My only criteria is 17" screen and a reasonable price.
I've had luck with my dv6000
but time to move on. I don't game, mostly email and surfing occasional word processing

You have to go to the Business Outlet not the Store...it is hard to find:
Refurbs
Don't buy something with the idea of upgrading the processor. The dv7 is only a little bit easier on that score than the dv9000, which is a bear. I did check the refurb link above and there is nothing on sale with a 17" screen. There is always eBay:

    No.

  • I am in the market for a new HP Laptop.

I am in the market for a new HP Laptop seeing as how my current one is starting to die out on me. I am looking for one that would last me at least 3 or more years like my current has and i kinda have one i like in mind at this link:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/9769246.p?id=1219041359741&sk...
So my my main question is going to be this: Does Best buy match prices or beat them out if i find the same model cheaper and with a mail in rebate on another retailer's website such as office depot?
I am doing price comparisons right now, because i don't know how long my current HP Pavillion Entertainment PC will hold out. I have had it for 3 years and now my on board graphics chipset or the LCD Monitor one are starting to mess up on me and i had to replace the fan and battery almost 2 or 3 months ago and now this issue is popping up. It boots up with a green screen when i turn it on at the moment, but then after it has warmed up the screen clears back up like normal. So that is why i figured that it is about time for a newer model laptop and where my researching and price comparing will come in down the line.
If you have any other laptop suggestions for me to at least look at please tell me. I want at least 750 GB or 1 TB HDD and an Intel Core i5 or I7 Processor in these suggestions too, because i do heavy duty Video Editing and Processing for my website and for Video Game Video Walkthroughs and need not only the best Processor it can handle, but for website backups and for the space doing Webcam video recordings can handle too.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have and if the current one i have linked is worth my time in saving for please be so kind as if to let me know that as well. I don't care if it has a Touch Screen or not. But any suggestion for research is always welcome.

The RAM of my HP Pavillion Dv4-2164us model is currently 4, but it is starting to boot up with a green screen when I first start it. So I am thinking about going with the J020 Envy which is a 17 Screen display or I might go for this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-touchsmart-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/18203... if I go 4th gen Intel Core i7 Processor and Touch Screen
The next thing after I save up after getting whatever next Laptop I buy will be a Cooling Pad and an External HDD that I can put into one of the USB Ports or where ever you hook them up so that I can backup it up for a rainy day as they say.
The only reason why I am not opting for the becoming popular SSD is the Price tag to get the amount of space I would need is still out of my price range if I got one included. I have to be realistic and on budget as much as I don't want to be.
If I went 4th gen I5 I might get something like this:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-750gb-hard-drive/2354033.p?id=1219072210771&...
I would have shown a 15 screen laptop, but the CD/DVD Combo drive is not included in any of them. I would need one to back up my new laptop's OS and files the first week I use it to save from having to reformat or reinstall stuff if things even got messed up.
I have been thinking a lot about all of this not like it was a just now knowing this type of thing either. I have known for some time about that. Thanks for trying to help too.

  • Recommendations for a new monitor?

    Greetings,
I'm looking for a new monitor for my Powermac G4 450 MHz AGP (sawtooth).
I'm currently using a Formac Gallery 1740 after 6 years it's starting to faded out on me.
I'd really appreciate any suggestion or Recommendations for a new one.

I'm using a 17" LCD, Acer model AL1706 on my G4 400MHz AGP. Was plug 'n play and has been flawless over the years. I'm sure the current model numbers are different.

Unless you can physically examine and test an external iSight, I would not buy one now.
External iSight is a great camera, but they are getting old as electronics go, and you have no idea how the one you buy now has been used or treated by its previous owner(s).
I suggest that you buy locally and test any external iSight you are considering on your Mac before you pay for it. That way you know whether it will work, and a local seller may be able to answer questions, if any, about connecting and using iSight before you buy.
If you find one locally, use the following suggestions to test the external iSight before you buy:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
Even if the external iSight you are considering is advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, it is not likely covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller does not provide you written service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions, especially if you cannot test the iSight before you buy to be sure it is working.
If you are interested, see this example regarding using a used external iSight:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9464955
What price should I expect to pay?
Searching eBay can show you what others have paid, but I know no way to predict what you should expect.
If you consider buying an untested external iSight via an on-line auction or other internet seller, I strongly suggest that you (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks. Such a warranty might effect your purchase price.
Would it be better to get a different camera from Logitech or something, thats cheaper and better?
    Yes.
That would be my recommendation. To cheaper and better, you can add is covered by a current warranty.

  • A/V Cable Recommendation for the new 3G iPhone?

I am looking to buy a new A/V cable for my new iPhone. Does anyone have any recommendations. I have seen the one in the Apple store for 49.99. Just wondering if that is my only option with this phone.
    Thanks in advance.
    --Mickey

I wouldnt recommend ANY other cable than the Apple ones at the moment.
Before you do order one, is best if you could ask the shop if you could try and if fails ask for a refund or credit return.
Do not go cheap on ebay for this, as many have tried and failed. I was able to get the original cable under $35.00 and this was either component or Composite cable.
Ensure you know which one you need for your TV. I have tried my original Composite cable on several old TVs and new ones and so far is all good. Hope this helps.

  • Looking for a new budget laptop

Hi there, our laptop broke recently and we need to replace it. We have several tablets and will purchase a more expensive laptop for work purposes later on, so right now we just need something for the following purposes: Internet surfing with a number of browser windows open at the same time, Word and Excel, movie streaming, Skype and that's it. Nothing fancy or expensive - which I thought would make the choice easy, but it seems there's a ton of different models in the "budget laptop range. Many are really similar and I just can't get myself to pick at random. I'm getting tired of looking and comparing, so somebody please make the choice for me! This are the specs I've been using for my searches, but I'm open to suggestions if you think they should be different, based on what we'll be using the laptop for: - i5 processor - 4gb RAM - Windows 8 64-bit - screen size between 14 and 16 inches - webcam - bluetooth - HDMI output (husband likes to watch shows on big tv sometimes, but it's not really necessary) It seems there's a lot of different models with these specs. Maybe somebody knows more about screen resolution or graphics to narrow it down to the best choice. I was thinking to spend between $500 and $700 - we could spend more, but that seems overkill considering this will just be the everyday-throw-around-let-the-kids-play-with kind of laptop!? Thanks for your input!

In my opinion, pretty much all the machines in that price range(that have the specs you're looking for) are going to be pretty much the same when it comes to quality/durability.
I prefer the brand ASUS(and most of the other's on here will chime in to that effect). I'm very partial to them, and would toss this out as a recommendation : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+K-Series+15.6%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive+-...
Thought it has Windows 7 on it, I can't say I consider that a bad thing.

  • Recommendations for a new 14.1" T61?

    Hi,
I will be getting my new 14" T61 soon, and I was wondering what sort of tests I could do to make sure that it has no issues, i.e. hard drive, logic board, wireless, power management, etc.
Could someone please recommend some tips?
Also, my T61 is coming with Windows XP. Will I get recovery CDs?
Will there be a partition on my hard drive for recovery? Can that be deleted without reinstalling everything?
Thanks so much! Sorry for the many questions.
    T61 - X300 - D10

RE: Also, my T61 is coming with Windows XP. Will I get recovery CDs?  NO.  However, you can make 6 to 10 CDs as backup or buy an external DVD Writer which will take one DVD to make the recovery disk.
Will there be a partition on my hard drive for recovery?   Yes, there is one on the harddrive
Can that be deleted without reinstalling everything?  Yes, you could delete that however,  you will then not be able to use the automatic backup feature that would be so convinient if you have to restore your machine back to the way it was at the last backup instead of to the factory configuration that the recovery DVD/CD will give you.

  • Need a Driver for a New HP Laptop. Driver is Not Available on This Site.

A customer of mine just bought two new HP Pavilion Dv7-1135nr.  For some reason they each have different DVD drives.  One works.  The other one, says its DVD drive needs a driver.  It has Vista, so I tried to update the driver via the web, and that didn't work.  Then I came to this site to find it on the laptop's product page, and it's not there. Does anyone know where I could track this driver down?
Again, the computer is an HP Pavilion Dv7-1135nr. The drive in question is called: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA I 50L ATA Device.
(As I said, the other, seemingly identical computer which has the exact same model number has a different drive.  That drive is called: TS-L6332.  It will not work in the computer that is having problems.)
    Thanks in advance,
    Vincent.

This file from Doug Knox's site will do the filter edit automatically without having to mess around in the Registry. It was originally
written for XP,but also works in Vista.

If this fails I would perform a complete System Recovery to reinstall Vista and drivers/software.Many times when a machine has problems
out of the box,a Recovery sorts it out.

  • I'm looking for a new macbook laptop?

I'm looking for a macbook pro. Here is what I'm looking for:
At least 16GB of memory storage
Accessability features for vision, hearing, dislexic, & motion disabilities
A front facing built-in web camera
Can you please help me find the right macbook laptop at a reasonable price? Thank you!

    lmk1988 wrote:
Accessability features for vision, hearing, dislexic, & motion disabilities
A MacBook Pro is not for you, sorry.
1: Vision: OS X does not scale the UI to be more friendlier to hard of seeing users, this has been a long standing complaint. Sure you can drop the resoluton and that makes things bigger, but it also makes them blurry.
To remedy this you really need a larger screen (17" or larger) and Windows 7 (better) which has a ability to scale the UI elements larger, OS X lacks this most important feature.
In fact on Windows it's possible to hack it to make the icons and other elements even LARGER than 150%.
2: Hearing is well covered on OS X, dislexia is covered by spell checkers, however motion disabilities there is a wider range of third party compatible hardware/software for Windows than on OS X. (for just about everything)
3: Most Mac's have glossy screens, although there might be a 15" antiglare still available, it's still a 15" thus too small for hard of seeing users who need more screen real estate to scale the UI and text larger to see them.
PC's have 17" anti-glare screens, you have to look for them but they still exist, importance with a anti-glare screen is it's gentler on the eyes than glossy screens.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computer_system_manufacturers
If you need it to be really big, then a perhaps a antiglare screen monitor and a Windows 7 PC tower desktop would be a better arrangement, but it's not portable. I've seen some people resort to using a projector on a wall as well.
I currently use one of last remaining 17" MacBook Pro's with anti-glare screen, Apple has discontinued the model (and other models in the past few years) as they are moving towards only small tablets and devices chiefly.
With OS X requiring a upgrade annually or be denied security updates in a few years, since you require a custom configuration, it's best that it last as long as possible without expensive and problematic  software changes (until 2020 with Windows 7).
So a Windows 7 machine is what you require, not a Mac.

  • Recommendations for a new camera

Hi all, I need some assitance in selecting a new SLR for a company I work for.
A little bit of background information first. I'm primarily a web/graphic designer with some photography experience. I took 3 semesters of photography in college and currently own a Rebel Xti with two prime lenses and a YN565EX Flash. My camera does pretty good considering it's age and spec range but it's not quite going to make the cut for a project we're working on.
The company I work for builds web applications and websites for government clients. The project I'm on is for an internal website (sub company) and we plan on using all custom photos. The 'boss' doesn't like stock photography. Problem is, we need a camera that's going to hit the quality of stock photography.
Budget: I'm not completely aware of the budget, I just know it's going on the company credit card. I'm guessing around $2-3 grand.
Awarenss: I've read across other forums that just getting a new fancy camera won't automatically give you super awesome photos. Good glass and lighting kits make a big difference. Hopefully my Flash will work on whatever camera we end up purchasing..
    Cameras I'm looking at:
    EOS 6D
    EOS 7D
    EOS 70D
We're hoping to make a purchase quite possibly this week. And again, I don't claim to be a master photographer but I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty with an SLR. I feel like operting SLR's are a lot like driving stick. Once you get it, you can operate just about any of them.

Idk, I've been using the XTi for quite a while. It's shown a gradual decrease in quality since I started using it out of college. It was essentially an upgrade from my POS manual film camera I had during 3 semesters of photography in college. Once I finished translating some of the settings on the XTi from the POS fuji, I was able to get some d*** fine shots. It's biggest issue was low light situations. If I was almost anywhere in doors, might as well have used my iPhone to take the shot. Also, a big issue I've had on it for years and a few others I know have experienced this on my camera as well...it's not an All Star in the focusing department. I've mentioned that in a few other forums and I've had many nods in agreement on that one.
Another forum is suggesting the Fuji X-T1. I've done some quick homework on it and while I'm impressed with it's low light performance, it looks like it's basically an automatic alternative to a full blown manual. That said, I'd like to reiterate a previous point I've tried making haha. I'm not intimidated by more advanced equipment. I'd never used an external flash in my entire life and just recently bought one. Read the manual for about half an hour, hooked it up and within about an hour had the hang of it. Doesn't mean I know the equipment by heart, it just means I'm pretty comfortable learning new equipment.
The mindset of my creative director is this..if we're going to get a new company camera, we might as well get a respectable platform to work with. In the event that I move up to developer and someone else comes in my place with even better lenses and better lighting equipment then the purchase was worth it. We now have a very useful body.
Someone on another forum mentioned this as well, "stock photos of the corporate environment are supposed to be bright and clean". While I agree with that, we're intentionally going a little darker. We're going to have responsive text over the many of the images. Also the navigation menu is going to be 'very different'. It's going to be a fully collapsable accordian style nav menu (expanding left to right like you would on a computer hunting for a file) with some transparent 'glass-like' effects so the images 'semi' show through them.
I'm actually kind of surprised by some of the responses I'm getting across forums. I know 22 MP doesn't make you the God of photography but if all photographers kept the mindset of "keep your old equipment and just replace the lenses and lighting equipment", then hardly anyone would bother upgrading to the higher end body's. Photographers must buy the higherend body's for a reason. I'm not suggesing the company I work for should go all out and buy the top of the line Canon or Nikon. I'm just saying, I'd be willing to bet half my year's salary that even a 70D with a starter lens could take a better shot than my XTi with a starter lens.
The TWO BIGGEST things I'm after are this.
    - Strong focusing
    - Good low light performance.

What cloud back up services work best with an iMac?

Without a good first and second or third backup plan or regimen in place,
before cloud backup, you still could lose most functional computer use.
The internet cloud is OK if you can access it, quickly & efficiently.
If you can count on that, then you are among a minority worldwide.
