Recommendations for Backup Storage

I make a lot of "home" movies using a miniDV camcorder, downloaded to iMovie (or recently, Final Cut Express), edited, then burned to a DVD.
While I regularly backup the rest of my computer, I have not been backing up the 500GB external HD that contains all of the iMovie/Final Cut files.
Recently, I had a major crash of the 500GB HD, and lost all of the files. Fortunately, I was able to recover the DVD material by making disk images of the DVDs I had already made. I also was able to re-download from miniDV tape those projects that I had not yet edited into a DVD.
But, the whole experience has me wondering about whether there's a good way to backup my 500GB "video drive," short of buying an additional 500GB drive to act as a mirror.
Advice?
Mac Intel Mini Core Duo 1.83 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iMovie 6/Final Cut Express HD

Hi Harold - when you re-import to an imovie project from the tape, you have two options, which you select in iMovie preferences:
1. Start a New Clip at Each Scene Break - this will bring in discrete clips but transitions etc will be built-in to the clips, and the titles etc will be set in stone. So if you want an editable version saved onto tape it is best to share it to camera BEFORE you have done the fine-tuning i.e. do it at the rough cut stage. This will cut out all of the unwanted footage, and save enormously on storage space when you re-import it.
2. By deselecting the 'Start a New Clip..' option, the movie will re-import as one large clip - this is fine if you no longer wish to edit it, but just want to create a DVD from it for example.

  • Coherence JMX for backup storage.

    Hi.
Does somebody have an experience of publishing cache statistics for backup storage via JMX ?
I want this to calculate memory utilization of coherence objects by monitoring system.
Statistics provided by CacheMBean is only about primary storage and does not take into account the amount of memory allocated for the backups.
Particularly I'm looking for the way to publish statistics using standard coherence tools (ideally only by cache configuration change) same way this is done for primary storage by CacheMBean.
If someone has already faced a similar problem will be grateful for reply.

    Hi,
Providing you have not done any specific configuration for backup storage (i.e. moved it off-heap) then it is stored in a backing map the same way as the primary so it will be the same size as the primary. Heap usage will be roughly 2 * Primary + Index Size and it is Index Size that is the more complicated to work out as the values are stored as deserialized Java objects and there is no proper Java sizeof method to work out an accurate size so the index sizes in JMX are a rough estimate.

  • How to setup the WRT350N to use a USB NTFS Drive for backup storage?

My network consists of a WRT350N Router/AP/NAS (with a 500GB NTFS formatted USB drive), a Windows Vista Ultimate Desktop (wired connection), a Windows Pro SP2 Desktop (wired connection) and a Windows Pro SP2 Laptop (wireless connection).
Does anyone know what settings to use for the WRT350N and how to setup each of the computers to allow me to use the WRT350N for Backup file Storage?
For example: Can I/should I enable and use the ftp server functions?  Can I just use the guest user account for all logins; etc.?  Do I have to reformat the USB Drive to FAT32?
    Any help would be appreciated!

Here is the clue to your question.
1.If you have formatted your Disk with the help of your computer it will be better if you reformat it with the "Erase" button
available on the Storage Tab of the Linksys
    router's Setup page.
2.After that You need to make sure that you have
public IP address as your WAN IP on the status of the router to setup a FTP server.
3.You can use guest account for all your users but
please make sure that you select guest as group
    while creating user.

  • DVD disks recommendations for backups

I have 25GB of photos, and need asap to back them all up. External drive is nice, but not now.
What DVD disks are recommended for this ?
Which ones have a better protection, like double, triple layers...?
    Thanks!

Since my iPhoto Library is 25GB, I'll need about 6 disks. Will it work ?
Or I need Roxio's "Toast", which is quite expensive ?
    Any free alternativers ?
You will need something - I use the backup program that comes with .Mac (mobile me)
Or you can export all your photos and manually break them down into single DVD folders and burn them
There are other packages that will burn multiple DVDs - but since I do not use them I can not speak to them

  • Recommendation for Backup of Virtualized NW6.0-SP5-Servers

    Hi,
at time we are learning to fly with ESX and will be moving the first Netware-Server for evaluation and tests in a few days.
At time we backup with BackupExec 9.1 right to tape, but my guess is that this will not work on ESX any longer.
As we do not only want to rely on ESX-Snapshots etc.. We still want a file-based backup-solution with tapes to be stored offsite, which also works with the also - but much later - coming OES--Migration.
    What solution can you recommend?
    Sincerely
    Karl

    Hi Anders,
to continue use of BE 9.1 would be great, but I doubt, that
I might get a virtualized BE-Media-Server to work with an
LTO2-Tape-Drive, even on ESX. The use of the
BE-Remote-Agents would help with some of the servers, but
that still leaves me at a point, where BE has to put the
data on tape. Is this something which can be done
virtualized or only with a physical machine? Or shall BE
backup to disk and those backup-files can be put to tape by
ESX? There is quite a bunch of documentation at
www.vmware.com about how bright and shiny everything will
be, but I did not get those questions answered yet.
    Sincerely
    Karl

  • Using Time Capsule for backup storage as well as Time Machine back-up

Just set up Time Capsule and used Time Machine to back up files. All working OK with new backups as well, but I need to transfer files from an external hard drive to Time Capsule.
Read on Apple site, "Note: Time Machine works best if you use your back-up disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your bckup disk, Time Machine won't backup those files and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.
What I really need is to have Time Machine backup everything. I don't have enough internal hard drive space on my MacBook Pro to transfer files from the external hard drive to the computer so that Time Machine could read them and back them up. How can this be accomplished? Is there another way? Thank you.

    1. "Use Disk Utility in your Applications > Utilities folder to check the format of the disk. Mac OS Extended (Journaled"
I did this and the external disk is formated corectly. Thank you!
I "Entered Time Machine" again and found the external drive listed (Yes!) I reviewed files including photos and some video files and all were accessable except my iPhoto files. Note: I have been using iPhoto Manager (3rd party software) to organize my iPhoto picutres for some time now on the external drive. My internal hard drive, 125 GB, filled up years ago, so I got this program and moved the iPhoto images off the internal drive. I can see the information for the files, i.e. size, created date, lst modified date, but cannot get acess to the picutres. When I try the same procedure with my external drive I can get into the files and get access to the photos.
Is there a way to gain access to these pictures?
    2. I also saw that my Applications folder had been backed up as well, but none of the Apple software, Adobe CS programs, Flash, Final Cut Pro are there. I am wondering if it is because this is an institutional college set-up machine and they installed the original software. There is a "Tech" folder that I do not have access to on the machine. I can update the college installed software and add software myself. All of the software I have added over the years seems to be there in the backup.
So is this simply not accessable except via "Tech"?

Using TimeMachine, I will like to backup my data on a external drive. Not happy with my LaCie 250 and 500 GB external drive, (the power supply need to be replace every years!!!) I will like to buy something reliable at a good price. What will be my best option?

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Which NAS you recommend for SMB backup storage

Synology and ReadyNAS would be my first choices in this category.  I have and use both and love them.  I've had quite good success with Buffalo as well with clients.  Nearly all storage engineers that I know when choosing this type of storage, like Kooler, choice Synology and ReadyNAS.
For backups and archives specifically I have had good luck with Drobo too.

For me it's always between Netgear and Synology. Now I'm back to Netgears (being a green guy here I cannot tell reason in public). For anything bigger then 2 SATAs in RAID1 economically reasonable to "roll your own" backup appliance. Recycled Dell R7xx and again recycled Windows Server 2012 R2 (because of SMB3 and decent backup-ready dedupe) appliance is very hard to beat! In case you don't have old server xByte has a stack of reburbished ones they sell cheap.--Planning to buy a NAS storage for our backups.Very small environment with VMware host, 7 VMs, Veeam backup.Total backup size 200GB, daily increment is around 7-10GB (Compressed). Will use the NAS for backup storage only and nothing else.Which brand do you recommend or use at your SMB locations:SynologyQNAPSeagateNetgear ReadyNASBuffalo

  • Is time machine what I want for backup??

I've tried several external drives for my mac and the first one crashed after a year, the second one (ClickFree Backup) doesn't work the way we'd like. It requires connection by the main computer to back up both computers which isn't how it was sold to me.
Ideally I'd like a wireless backup that can be used by both the Mac and PC in our household, and be able to access files between the two. If that can't happen (and I'm assuming it cannot), then I'd like something just for my Macbook Pro. I'd like to put all music and photos on it rather than on my hard drive, so not sure if it's okay to go with Time Machine or if Time Capsule is necessary. I use my laptop all over the house so it's only in the evenings when I dock it and would plug in to back up. So Time Machine, Time Capsule, or something else you'd recommend for backup?

That can probably be done, depending on your router. It can be done with a Time Capsule.
I'd like to put all music and photos on it rather than on my hard drive, so not sure if it's okay to go with Time Machine or if Time Capsule is necessary.
You're talking about two very different things: extra space for originals vs. backups.
Time Machine is a backup app; their whole role in life is to keep extra copies of your originals, in case something awful happens to the originals. Those copies can't be used by most apps; they must be restored somewhere to be used.
You can use a Time Capsule for backups, or for originals, but it's not a good idea to try to use it for both. This is partly because Time Machine will use all the empty space available to it; and partly because Time Machine can't back up the originals that are on a network.
I use my laptop all over the house so it's only in the evenings when I dock it and would plug in to back up.
With a Time Capsule, Time Machine can make quick backups of whatever's changed every hour, via your network, as long as your Mac is awake and in range.
The closest you could get to everything you want would be to get a Time Capsule and a USB drive to connect to it. Use the TC's internal HD for your Mac's backups and the USB drive for the shared data. But you'd need some way (and some place) to back up the shared data.
The shared data on the USB drive presents another problem. Macs can't read and write to most drives formatted for a PC, and vice-versa. Both can use the +MS-DOS (FAT)+ format, but Time Machine can't back that up, even if you connect it to your Mac. There are some 3rd party apps (I think one is named MacDrive) for a PC that will read and write Mac-formatted drives, and one for Macs that will read and write NTFS (PC) formatted drives.

  • Backup storage device for VMWare SMB environment

    Bryan Doe,
Is this what you are recommending ?
    1) continue with our current setup
    2) connect portable USB drives to the same backup physical machines . setup veeam copy job to the external USB drives.
This way backups will be stored locally on the 4TB internal drive on the desktop.
Backups will be copied to external USB drive as well, so we can take them home every day and keep swapping.

Here is our environment:SMB 30 usersVMWare ESXi 6.0 single host
7 VMs ( all windows)Veeam Backup essentials - to backup the above ESXi host.Total full backup size around 150GB, daily increment backup around 8 to 10GB.Currently storing all backups to a physical windows machine which has 4TB western digital internal backup drive.Planning to get a good backup storage which can do the following tasks for now and future, please recommend.- able to store all the backups locally. will be a storage target for veeambackup software- if the backup storage can have an option for us to connect an portable external USB 3.0 drives that would be good. This way 1st backup will be stored on backup storage locally and then 2nd copy to the USB portable drive connected to the backup storage. So we can take the USB portable drive home every day night.-we...

  • Storage device for backup

    hi all,
what is the best option for a storage device to be used in place of a wifi time capsule?

I was born in La Jolla.
What model MBP do you have and what type of ports do you have on your computer? I wouldn't invest in a Time Capsule unless you just have to have the wifi backup. I'd get something simple like a FireWire 800 (if you've a 800 port) external hard drive and use Time Machine to store and manage backups. Time Machine is a no-brainer. You'll want to purchase an external drive of at least 2-3x the storage capacity as your internal.
Let us know what ports you have available and someone can recommend specific drives.

  • Can a time machine backup also be used for archive storage?

Can the same time machine backup drive also be used for archive storage from another Macbook?

The way TimeMachine works you can guarantee that anything on your computer now will be backed up and archival copies kept. But there are two caveats. First, TimeMachine trims backups. For 24 hours they are hourly (approximately). Then the most current will be trimmed and a week worth of daily backups will be kept. Then the week will be trimmed to the most current version and the weekly backups will be kept until the drive is too full. At that point the oldest weekly update(s) will be erased to make room for the next hourly backup. When trimming occurs, files that were backed up but are no longer on your computer will be trimmed. This is the second caveat.
Since this trimming is automatic rather than under your control TimeMachine isn't a good archival backup system. Two programs that I can recommend that do have true archival ability are CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync. Both allow you to decide what gets archived and how many archival periods to allow.

  • DPM Off site backup recommendations for all workloads without using tapes

    Hi All
I'm looking for recommendations for off site backups avoiding tapes if at all possible.
    My scenario is as follows:
We are soon to be migrating our backups to DPM 2012 R2 and will be backing up all workloads to disk, this will be around 10TB initially but could ramp up to over 30TB as more workloads are brought in.
What we would like to do is remove the need for tapes and shove our backups offsite onto some sort of cloud storage. We've looked at the obvious Azure online option but unfortunately this doesn't support all workloads (just File, SQL and Hyper-V).
We would need a decent retention period (7 years).
We'd like to go as direct as possible to the cloud from DPM without the need to locally double up or stage.
I'm very interested to know what's out there and what are people using.
    Cheers!

    Yes but...
As it's going to be writing potentially GB/TB of data to the VTL file it might not be the most efficient to go directly across the cloud. There are lots of issues latency, speed, contention, etc. to take in to consideration. Most of the Cloud Storage appliances
like StorSimple, BridgeStor, etc. have the smarts of cope with variables such as above. Once the complete file is on disk moving it to the cloud is relatively easy.
I agree that you'll be duplicating data but it would be far safer to write locally then move to the cloud.
A secondary is a good option too but as you're looking for long term retention, 7 years, then it may be very tricky with file data due to the 64 VSS snapshot limit. For other workloads it would be fine but would require a significant capital investment to
create the infrastructure as DPM doesn't play well with new features like Storage Spaces.
