Recommendations for best disk recovery software

I'm reading up on various reviews on disk recovery software, but just wanted to get some of your opinions and recommendations.
I use to use Nortons back in the old days of System 7 and beige G3s but haven't need to use such software until now, so i'm a bit out of the loop.

As far as Recovery is concerned I would say Data Rescue is pretty good.

More important as I am sure you are aware however is a good cloning and or backup plan. I have a Lacie d2 external with three partitions (clone, data and emergency boot). I use Super Duper for the cloning, also manually backup very important files on data archive. Both the clone and emergency boot partitions are bootable.
And, I also burn very, very important files to CD/DVD.

What is the best data recovery software for Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard?

    A backup.
After that's there's the usual list, DataRescue, FileSalvage. General reading on this topic - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/datarecovery.html  It would help to know the actual problem since sometimes a straight answer to this kind of question isn't always the way to a solution to the real issue.

  • What are the browser recommendations for best viewing iWeb 08 site on a PC?

What are the browser recommendations for best viewing iWeb sites on a PC? Can't find any info on Apple iWeb site.

    Hi,
I don't think there are recommendations from Apple.
What I can say is that the newest version of InternetExplorer at the UniversityCampus is working great with my website I didn't find any problem (Menus, Slideshows, text displaying, pictures everything worked great). There are IE problems reported in other threads but I think they refer to older IE versions (seems like most IE users still have older versions on their PCs).
    Newest Firefox will work too.

  • Best data recovery software for Mac Os X 10.10

I need to recover data that was deleted on a WD external HDD. I am using a mac mini with Os X 10.10.
I would like to use a reliable and safe data recovery product.
    Any suggestions?

The file was fragmented. To fully recover a file it needs to be continuous on the hard drive. If the file was fragmented it was broken into pieces across the hard drive. The recovery program can't know this so would each piece as a different file as it no longer has a map to go off of.
There will probably be many files with a random letter/number combo for a name. Within these may be the missing parts of the video. While there may be some advanced forensic techniques to reconstitute the files. I think that would go beyond some forum advice to needing years of advanced training in data recovery.
You can try Nucleus Kernel Macintosh. It is by far the most thorough and robust data recovery I have used but requires Windows to run even though it recovers Mac volumes.
For OS X native try Stellar Phoenix. I didn't find it as good but it is definitely the best I know of for Os X 10.10.
I would not bother with Data Rescue or Disk Warrior. They will not do a deep scan of the hard drive. They also won't do a scan if the partition table was lost and won't try to plow through disk errors.
Also $70 to $100 for data recovery software is very cheap compared to professional.
Edit: I also hope you are recovering files to a different drive than that external you wiped and that you have not been adding any files to it. Otherwise that data will be mangled fast.

    Help!
Accidentally put some important photos in the Trash Can, and emptied it.
Best data recovery program = ?
    Thanks!

Click here and pick a product. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • Recommendation for best way to copy a DVD and send to Vimeo?

8 years ago I made a DVD of a 2-hour SD program and now I'd like to put it up on Vimeo. Before I upload it, I'd like to copy it into FCPX to add some text. What software and process do you recommend so I'll end up with the best quality on Vimeo (I have Vimeo Pro, which allows up to 20GBs).
I've been trying to copy it, but I keep getting little scan lines around points of movement.
Your recommendations are welcome! Thanks. Duncan

Russ and Tom, thanks for your guidance on this.
Russ, you were right that the Playback Component will work with 10.9. I was confused by the Apple Store website that says, “On OS X Lion and later, MPEG-2 playback functionality is built into QuickTime X. The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not required and cannot be installed.” That warning proved true, since when I downloaded it, I couldn’t install it. But the link Tom sent me told me how to load it anyway, using the Streamclip utility script, which worked.
I then experimented with about 9 different settings to get the digital file as close to the DVD in quality as possible. The one that worked best for me was a combination of the settings you both sent me: Open the DVD in Streamclip, set Compression for ProRes 422 Quicktime, Quality: 100%, check Deinterlace Video, check Field Dominance Upper Field First (I tried Lower, but didn’t see a difference).
Although Streamclip lists Frame Size for 4:3 as “640x480”, Tom pointed out “The native format for DVD is not 640x480, but 720x480.” So I selected “720x480 (DV-NTSC)” for Frame Size in Streamclip. Then I clicked “Make Movie”.
Then I imported the file into FCPX, created a new project, and, as Russ suggested, had FCPX set the project properties based on the first clip. I loaded the file on the timeline, added my lettering, and then went to Share, where I exported it as a “Master File” with “Web Hosting” chosen. This produced the finished file ready for uploading. Although in stages of this process there were jagged lines on lettering, they were mostly gone on the final file. The end product is close in quality to the original DVD. Close enough.
Russ and Tom, I struggled with this for days. Thank you for helping me.

  • Recommendations for more disk space

I have had my iMac for about a year and the 250GB disk is getting full. I'm considering getting an external storage device - what sort of factors do I need to consider when choosing? Any specific recommendations - I'm hoping to get an extra 500GB.
Also, can I use the same external disk for Time Machine, or does it need a dedicated external disk drive?
    Thanks, Matt

Also, can I use the same external disk for Time Machine, or does it need a dedicated external disk drive?
Generally, Time Machine is best used on a dedicated partition.
I have a single drive with 3 partitions - one of which is for Time Machine.
So the answer is a qualified Yes.
If you have nearly 250GB to backup - you will need a Time Machine drive of 500GB (as a minimum Apple recommends that Time Machine be given twice the space of the source).
If you haven't purchased a drive yet - get a FireWire drive (800 if possible, I don't know if you iMac supports FW800 or FW400 if not).
I have used Time Machine on a generic USB drive, and on WD MyBook Drives successfully. WD and Lacie are selling 1TB drives now.

  • Best disk cloning software

I need to upgrade the hard drive on my 2008 Macbook Pro (OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)).
I would like to clone the replacement disk using a USB-SATA adapter before installation.  What is the best  cloning software to use?
    Thanks

    Use Disk Utility, primarily.
    Carbon Copy Cloner, secondarily.

  • Bass amp recommendations for Garageband or other software I can use?

Hi folks. I would like my bass dynamics in my recordings to be a bit better than they are. Using Apogee Jam for recordings and latest GB for iOS.  Any way to do this?  Physical bass amp pedal I can hook up? Something better than playing through the software GUITAR amps that are offered?  Thanks.

Not that I know of, but you definitely need a relational database for this, and FileMaker is the best there is.
It might be worth asking them if they already have a template for your purpose.
Of course, they also make a simpler and cheaper version called Bento:

I have never used it but it might be worth a look?

  • Recommendations for best photo quality in a slideshow video?

I have a project that I'm working on where photo quality is a priority to the customer.  I'd never paid attention previously that the final product was less than perfect with the images...
Can someone recomend what best procedure would be and what settings I should be using on the sequence to preserve the quality? (or point me to a link that could walk me through it) The photos are all 1024px wide at 300dpi, currently saved as .jpgs.  I can resize and save them from Photoshop into another format if needed...
    Thank you!

Saw that you were going to DV. Your images will be scaled, but not by that much. If you will be doing and Pans with an image Zoomed out to max, you'll have a bit of wiggle room. In general terms, 1000x750 is recommended, though I size all of my images as needed, usually 720x480. The resizing algorithms in PrPro are not as good as those in PS. Still, you're talking such a small amount of scaling and already have JPEG's to start, that I would leave them, as they are.
In the future, you might try to go to before the JPEG compression, where quality is the biggest concern, and resize to suit in PS. Save_As .PSD.
Here's an ARTICLE on resizing in PS, if it's of interest to you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
