Recommendations for SystemWorks Replacement?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a program that would replace SystemWorks?
What I'm looking for is either one or more programs that would: Recover deleted files, DeFrag, and maybe even an AntiVirus (you never know).

IMO Mac OS X already comes with all the software you need.
What I'm looking for is either one or more programs that would: Recover deleted files,
Time Machine. It's already on your Mac; you just need to plug in an external drive and turn it on before you delete the file. No data recovery tool works as well or as cheaply as a good backup program. Another good program is SuperDuper. You can use it to make a complete bootable clone of everything on your hard drive.
DeFrag,
OS X already does it for you, for files smaller than 20MB in size. If you still want to defragment anyway, boot up into your SuperDuper clone, erase the internal hard drive, and clone everything back. Or boot up from your Leopard install DVD and restore one of your Time Machine backups.
and maybe even an AntiVirus (you never know).
The only good reason to install AV software on your Mac is if you are in a corporate environment and you need to install AV as part of company policy. If this is the case, try ClamXav. Otherwise, antivirus software tends to do more harm than good on a Mac.

  • Recommendations for HD replacement?

One of my other Macs is a 12" iBook G4. The hard drive is dying a slow and ugly death. I've replaced hard drives before but I'm wondering whether there is an "Apple" specification for this purpose. I'm trying to find something on ebay, but need to know what to look for. Will any 2.5" laptop drive do the trick?

Be sure the hard drive is no more than 9.5mm tall. There are laptop 2.5" drives that are 11-12mm tall. Those won't fit.

  • Recommendations for audio interface with new mac pro to avoid latency?

    Hi friends,
I have a new Mac Pro on order for editing video in FCPX, but Presonus says my older Presonus Firebox won't work with Mavericks and the new Mac Pro. Do you have a recommendation for a replacement?
I only use the interface to drive 2 powered expternal speakers and a headset, so I don't need something super sophisticated.
As I read about units, almost all come with USB 2.0 connections. But the new Mac Pro only offers USB, Thunderbolt 2, Dual Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 Ultra HD inputs. If I can't find a fairly inexpensive audio interface with USB 3.0, I'd have to go through another connection to get into the Mac Pro.
The key for me is to make sure and avoid latency, a critical issue for editing video.
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Duncan

    Thanks Mark and Smokerz,
Your point about USB2 working in USB3 ports is something I wasn't aware of. That opens a lot of doors for me. And I'll look into the Yamaha sound board as one possibility.
Thank you both for helping me.

  • Replacement Hard drive recommendations for iMac G5

I need to replace my hard drive on my old iMac computer and I wanted to know if anybody has a recommendation for an inexpensive replacement unit. I don't need too much memory space, probably anywhere from 500 G to 1 T would be plenty

Hitachi, WD Caviar, or any drive from [macsales.com] will be good. But remember that you get what you pay for. Look at [xlr8yourmc.com] and see what people there are installing.
    Good luck,

  • Superdrive dead - recommendations for replacement?

My PB Ti (Gigabit Ethernet) Superdrive has failed. It is the Matshita DVD-R UJ-815. It began to squeal and leaves a circular scratch in the middle of the media. Roxio Toast reports a hardware failure, I believe the message was a servo spindle failure. In any event, it seems I need to shop for a replacement drive.
I found the following drive on Other World Computing:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MCTDVDSDB8DL/
Any comments? I don't need a dual layer drive or anything fancy and would prefer to replace it with the same UJ-815 if possible, but don't know of a source. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
    Thanks!

You can use any slot load drive out there, you do not need to spend big money from specialists.
I fitted a Pioneer drive as noted in my profile but many are available, check Accelerate Your Mac's drive database for ideas.
Also note that some drives are supplied as slaves and, although they can be used that way, these are better modified to master like this.

  • Looking for a replacement monitor?

My original 17" Apple Studio Display is going bad and needs replacing. I have both DVI & ADC ports on the back of my G5.
Can I use any LCD with a DVI input? Samsung's website shows connecting to a mac using a D-sub connection? I was hoping to plug & play using DVI to DVI?
I am looking at a Samsung, NEC, or Viewsonic widescreen in 20" or 22". Any recommendations for a seamless transition?
    Thanks!

    Hi-
Can I use any LCD with a DVI input?
With no greater than 1920x1200 optimal resolution, Yes.
The three listed makers are all reported favorably by Mac users, and are all plug and play to the DVI port on your graphics card.
Add Acer to your list of possibilities- very nice, economical monitors.

  • My recommendations for edits to the Thunderbird "Profiles" section: "Restoring".

    Dear Thunderbird "Help" team:
My recommendations for edits to the Thunderbird "Profiles" section:
Things that are not clear, on the page of Thunderbird "...Restoring to a different location..."
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_restoring-to-a-different-location .
    and...
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb
A.a) Existing: "...Each profile is stored on your hard drive in a profile folder. The folder is named using the following convention:
    <random_string>.<profile_name>
...where "<random_string>" is eight digits randomly generated by Thunderbird and "<profile_name>" is the name you assigned to the profile. ..."
A.b) Please replace "digits" with "characters". In common US English, digits are numerical, 0 to 9. (You have it right, in the later paragraph: "Restoring a profile backup". )
    B) At "Moving a profile", it is not clear the difference between that and "Restoring to a different location". Please split the two cases, so that each one is complete unto itself. Write separate instruction sets (there is no advantage to economy of words, in a webpage like this.)
B.a) Explain first how to find the file "profiles.ini", by using the Windows Explorer window.
B.b) Recommend that the user first make a backup copy of that file "profiles.ini", in case the work does not succeed, so that the messed-up file can be replaced with the original.
B.c) In the descriptors of "Moving a profile", for the actions to be taken, it is not clear whether each step is... at the location of the backup, or... at the location for the desired new installation. Especially uncertain for Step 3 and Step 4.
B.d) In Step 5, give a better explanation for the path options: - relative or non-relative. How does the user know if the path option has been switched?
    Marian Beddill

You spoke to my first item - "digits".
But my BIG problem is the second one. -- "Moving a profile".
I cannot understand the instructions. (*)
The reason, is that it tries to cover TWO CASES/SITUATIONS , jumbled into ONE instruction set.
My request to Mozilla, is to split those instructions into TWO (or more) distinct and separate instruction sets, but with each set dealing ONLY with one case.
Write one set for "Moving a profile".
Write one set for "Restoring to a different location".
This way, the user does not have to try to interpret the "if"-descriptors, while in the middle of trying to accomplish the task at hand.
Doing as I ask, makes for more words, and a longer page. But there is no cost for length of a page, and a great advantage to the user, since the steps to be followed for each case are distinct and are not ambiguous. Do not have any "If-this" detours in the sequence of operations.
(*) PS: I am not dumb on programming. I have been writing code since 1966, and have taught programming in several other nations.
(**) PPS: I still have not been able to move ("replicate") my old profile and message files, from the external backup copy, into the new, clean machine, so that I may continue corresponding from where I left off, when the motherboard crashed.

  • Recommend way to replace doJoin

I have nested TiledViews. In NetDynamics the Data Objects that
populated their fields were joined using the doJoin method. What
is the recommended way of getting this same behavior in JATO 1.2.x?
I have been trying, with little success, to get the values from the
parent TiledView's Model and set them as where-criteria for the child
    TiledView's Model.
    Thanks,
    paul
    code from ND:
    CSpDataDrivenVisual CSpDDV =(CSpDataDrivenVisual) event.getSource();
    return(CSpDDV.doJoin(event.getRowIndex()));

    Paul
I'm happy to here you were able to diagnose the problem.
I did a prototype app that had 3 nested tiled views and got it working,
albeit, my sample requirements were not as demanding as yours (specific
db logins and such), but I learned one thing.
I found it easier to push the key value down to the child tiledview than
getting it from the parent tiledview. But sounds like no need to pursue
    anymore.

You were a great help though. I had been trying to get the where

working well for me, getting them from the page elements is working
    great.

I think Craig is getting back to you with a better answer, but from a

    2.0). Are
you doing this? In other words, each model needs to be re-executed

    Craig,
Thanks for the help. I am doing this, but I'm still having problems.
I have three TiledViews on the page:
    Survey
    |----Questions
    |----Display
I'm attempting to illustrate the way they are nested here. It seems
that the models, primary and not, are all executing on the
BeginDisplay event of the page. They execute a second time after I
set the where criteria, but it looks like the fields are already
    bound
by the time the criteria is set. Also, the primary model for the
Survey TiledView is executing on the next web action. I should also
note that I have to change the defaultConnectionUser and
defaultConnectionPassword on the model before I call handleWebAction
on the repeated object; this is because there is a view in use that
is specific to the username supplied when logging in, and if I don't
change the user name the view contains no data.
The first time in the page the Survey TiledView is displayed, but the
two nested TiledViews are not; beginDisplay is called on Questions,
but NextTile returns false. When I click next, the first record is
again displayed and the correct data for Questions and Display.
However, a second click of the next button displays the sameresults.
A click on the Last button displays correct results for the last
    record.
Any ideas where to look or what to look for would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    paul

    Paul,
This feature of ND is not built into JATO. It was a somewhatmysterious
feature in ND. I remember it being one of the most difficult
    topics
    to
explain how ND made it work in my ND developer classes so it
    is not
surprising that you are having issues implementing it on your own.
But the solution should end up being quite simple. We just need tomimic
what the ND framework was doing and use a bit of the JATO
    framework
    to
help us as well. Nested tiled views can be a bit sticky to
    grasp as
    well.
I don't know what your code looks like, but here is basically whatyou
should be doing. Assume CustomerListTiledView (outer) and
OrderListTiledView (inner) are the TiledView names and
CustomerListTiledView has fields CustNum and CustName, and
    OrderListTiledView has OrderID, and OrderDate.
And CustomerListTiledView uses CustomerModel that has model fields
CustNum and CustName, and OrderlistTiledView uses OrderModel andhas
model fields OrderID, CustNum, and OrderDate.
I will assume that your outer TiledView is not a problem and thatthe
    issue is with the inner.
In CustomerListTiledView's nextTile method (ND analog to
onBeforeRowDisplayEvent), you want to get the value of the CustNumfield
for that tile, getDisplayFieldValue("CustNum"), and use it ascriteria
for the OrderListTiledView's primary model (OrderModel). But don't
forget to clear the criteria first.
    in nextTile method:
    TiledView tv = (TiledView)getChild("OrderListTiledView");
    SelectModel model = (SelectModel)tv.getPrimaryModel();
    model.clearUserWhereCriteria();
    model.addUserWhereCriterion("CustNum", getDisplayFieldValue("CustNum"));
The auto retrieve for the OrderModel in the inner tiled view will
execute it with the provided criteria on each row of the outer
    tiled
    view.
If this is what you are doing, show me the relevant code (noattachments
work on the group, just inline in email) and maybe I can spot thetrouble.

  • Recommendations for over the ear bluetooth headphone

Hello. Does anyone have recommendations for over the ear bluetooth headphones to be used for my Mac Pro? Thanks!

I recently got a set of Insignia NS-BTHDP I am quite happy with. They synced up no problem with the internal bluetooth and work nicely. I had an older set (Jensen WBT212) that didn't work as well but were functional that these replaced.

  • Need recommendation for external DVD burner drive!

I'm one of the officers for a film club at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Recently, I discovered that we had, in our offices, a fully-functional, if not somewhat dated, iMac G4. After getting the neccessary OS X upgrades (it's now running the latest version, 10.4.8), I need to upgrade the CD drive, which is currently just a CD burner drive. It can't even play DVDs, much less burn them, both things we need to have working if we want people in our organization to be able to use this computer.
Since I don't want to physically remove the drive and replace it with an internal DVD burner drive, I'd like a recommendation for a good external one. I noticed that there's only one option on the Apple Store, the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW Drive, and that doesn't look like it's been getting very good reviews. Does anyone have any other options I could choose from?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Good point Keith.
I have no experience of this model but this one from OWC (a company who get very good press on these boards) promises iDVD 5 and 6 support. It's somewhat cheaper than the Lacie in the Apple store but doesn't have Lightscribe.

  • Recommendations for external hd for Time Machine backups

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)
For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive. Two or three times, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.
My MAIN question: Do any of you have a recommendation for an external hard drive - probably desktop, but not necessarily - preferably 1TB - which is RELIABLE?
Is this h.d. corruption/repeated failure a function of Time Machine? The hard drive itself?
What good is Time Machine if we lose backups all the time?

    limerick2010 wrote:
Sorry to butt in, but I'm on the lookout for a solution to make a secondary, offsite back-up of my company's data. I was also looking at the usage of external hard disk for the purpose but am stumbling at a very basic question.
If the first disk(say 1TB) runs out of space and I connect a new hard-disk, wouldn't Time Machine back up all the stuff previously backed up, all over again on the new disk?
Exactly. Bt you're talking about two very different things: secondary backups vs. not enough room for primary backups.
The whole point of secondary backups is having a second, separate set, so if something happens to the primary set (lost, corrupted, disk fails, etc.), you have another complete set. As noted in the link in my previous post, it's also a good idea to use a different app for the secondary set, in case there's a problem with the primary app.
If your Time Machine disk gets full, you have three choices:
Let Time Machine start deleting old backup(s) automatically, to make room for new ones. You don't need to keep them forever -- a few months should be plenty for most users.
Get a new disk and start backing-up to it. Keep the old one "on the shelf" until you're sure you don't need the old backups any longer. You can always view and restore from them via the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Get a larger disk, copy the old backups to it, and continue backing-up to the new one. See #18 in the FAQ.

  • Recording Interface Recommendations for 10.7.5?

I recently upgraded to 10.7.5 (IMax). My M-Audio recording interface does not have an upated driver (which was causing output sound issues), so I'm on the hunt for a new interface. Any recommendations for a small, desktop unit for $200 or less? I don't need a big complex rack unit, but would like quality recordings of guitar and voice. I use garage band and logic pro 9.
    Thanks much!

Deleting Safari and reinstalling it will probably not solve your problem. If you have not deleted Safari yet, please do not do that!
First, just try holding down the shift key while opening Safari. This will prevent it from trying to open any pages that were open when it last quit. Your problem could be nothing more than Safari re-opening a page that was open from a previous browsing session.
    If that doesn't work, see:
    Eliminating browser redirects and advertisements
Go through all the tests there, and if they indicate that you may have adware installed, proceed to the adware guide it refers you to.
If you have already deleted Safari, just hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, then reinstall the system. Installing right on top of your existing system will replace any items that may have been deleted or damaged, and will leave all your other apps and documents alone.

  • Recommendations for hard drive enclosures

    Hi,
My G5 1.8ghz Dual Power Mac finally died today after eight years good service. I'm looking to remove the hard drive and wondered if anybody had any recommendations for enclosures that I could put it in? Is there anything I need to bear in mind when buying the enclosure or are they all pretty standard?
I've already purchased a new iMac as a replacement computer -  I just want to be able to access the data in the old hard drive.
    Thanks in advance

After going through several, I can only recommend those from OWC (Kappy's last link). I just stripped down a Western Digital Sudio Mac Edition external with a quad interface i bought seveal years ago to recover the bare drive becasue the enclosure's been nothing but a royal PITA.
The drive itself is fine but the enclosure uses a very Mac-unfriendly set of hardware that has sleep issues, lock-up issues, noise issues, won't properly mount to the Desktop, runs hot, and so on. Until I get a new OWC enclosure for the bare WD drive, I moved an older OWC external to take over the backup functions and it works like a dream. And it has a slower interface (FireWire400) but takes little longer to backup than the WD with FW800.
WD makes great internal drives--we have many in our menagerie of Macs--but their enclosures are just cheap and not Mac-friendly, even though I bought the "Mac Edition" version.

This feature ONLY comes into play on a Drive that has developed Bad Blocks that have not yet been corrected by re-writing the data.
What happens when you attempt to Read data from a Bad Block on a drive without that feature, the drive will Retry, and retry, and retry, in an attempt to get data that is good enough that the drive's error-correction logic can correct it. This can take so long that the RAID driver declares the drive as inaccessible, and splits the RAID into a functioning and a non-functioning unit, and declares the RAID compromised* ( that's not the word they use, but the correct term escapes me at the moment.)
Drives with Bad Blocks are more likely to develop more Bad Blocks and fail later.
