Recommendations needed for using VNC

I've been testing out a couple of VNC hosts/clients amongst my two workstations, as a means of being able to control my older (read: slower and now lonely) workstation from my newer workstation for various and sundry tasks. I'm not actually trying to edit across the network, but I'd like to be able to manage files, set up encodes, and other fairly lo-fi tasks.
Currently, my computers are networked using the router that is part of the DSL modem I use. Unfortunately, this is only a 10/100 router, and it's pretty slow, both in file copying terms and in general operation. My open-ended guess is that if I bumped up to a GigE switch/router, I'd be able to perform these actions a little more fluidly--right now, there is significant lag in operation and redraw in the VNC client window.
I've tested out UltraVNC and TightVNC. UltraVNC is a bit "bubblier" but hasn't been updated in awhile and lacks a cool feature that TightVNC has: a file transfer window. It's not as slick as drag-'n'-dropping from the client computer to the host computer, but it's sort of a Java FTP window that lets you navigate the drives on both machines and copy files betwixt them. For this reason, I like TightVNC better (the free price tag helps).
What I'm wondering is if there is a better/faster method of doing this, or if there are other suggestions for VNC software to use? I know Windows has the built-in VNC (Remote Desktop, I believe), but I've always disabled that since it's otherwise running in the background. I can control other VNC apps a little bit more tightly, but they're not quite as "integrated" as RD would be, I imagine. Are there any other VNC packages I should be looking at, or do you have any suggestions as to how to best outfit this setup? I'm looking at getting a basic Netgear GigE switch to increase the connection speed between my systems, but I'm open to other suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Colin,
The free version works good! Try it!
I have used it a lot helping my father with his computer when he lived in the US (I live in Norway, and btw, now my father does to). I have also used it on my LAN, and both uses have been smooth and very useful!
Now, if I ever were going to help a client over the internet with his computer, I would have charged my client for the cost of the program. If you define your use as a "personal use", it's up to you.

  • Justifications needed for using tags in JSP, Please reply

    Hi forum
    My question is to those java people who have also done JSP. I m sound in java server side (servlet programming), now I have asked by my project manager to do server side programming in JSP using tagLibraries (as these are used by those ppl who didnt have much java knowledge). I have worked inserver side java, then my question is y should I start working on tags,
    On the other hand I can do all the work in java embedding in JSP (on some extent, seperated by diffrent helper/util classes to reduce the thickness of JSP page).
    so I want to ask u ppl that should a java programmer needs to use tag libraries to code a JSP page, however he can code it in java directly.
    I will feal great pleasure if u will write ur opinions and help me to ease my life.
    thanx in advance
    Best Regards
    Tahir

    You should use tag libraries whenever you can because:
    1) They increase code re-useability. You can insert the same tag in many pages using just a few lines to do complex tasks, as opposed to writing a lot of scriptlet code in each JSP.
    2) Enhance your ability to seperate logic from display. Everything in your tags is logic. Everything in your JSP is display - with the tags bridging the logic to the display.
    3) Make the JSPs cleaner and easier to maintain. They read easier with tags than with a lot of scriptlets. Non-java people can be used to update the look and feel of the web page, or to debug the HTML later on, relieving the Java programmers for the tag work, or other jobs more suited to them.
    4) Your boss said to do tags, so do tags.

  • Recommended tutorials for using paths/vector art in Photoshop?

    Hi all!
    Can you recommend any good tutorials for using paths/vector art in Photoshop?
    Honestly, I've had a good look for even one - without much success.
    I Have lots of experience with paths/vector art in Illustrator, Fireworks and InDesign but I believe you really can do great things with them in Photoshop now for illustration work.
    i'm just baffled by it. I can fill and stroke and edit a vector shape in PS - but if I custom DRAW a vector path or shape, things get confusing!
    Hoping someone can point me in a helpful direction
    John

    John,
    I wouldn't claim to know everything there is to know, but I'm reasonably certain it hasn't changed.
    Are the 'shapes' just vector masks with a raster element inside?
    Yes. That's an accurate enough description.
    And if you apply a colour to a path that you've drawn - does it rasterise?
    It doesn't have to rasterize. If you see color, it's pixels.
    I was definitely of the impression that a lot more could be done in PS these days that might formerly have been done in ILLUSTRATOR.
    The shape/path tools in Photoshop have been enhanced and improved in recent years, but the product of their use still differs from Illustrator's true vector output.

  • Is Mobi server needed for using SBO Explorer on iPhone/iPad

    Hello,all.
    We started BOE XI R3.1, SBO explorer 3.2, SBO Mobile 3.1 all of it at win2003 server.
    SBO Explorer Works via browser at PC, but does't work at iPhone/iPad SBO Exporer app.
    SBO Mobile seems to be stated.
    Which server should set to get it?
    None of next settngs work:
      MobileServer checkbox is on: http://<mobiserver>.<company>.com:8080 -> Unable to access Mobi Server
      MobileServer checkbox is on: http://<mobiserver>.<company>.com -> Unable to access Mobi Server
      MobileServer checkbox is off: http://<SBOExplorer server>.<company>.com:8080 -> "No server configuration detected... Check url validity" when verifying link in settings
      MobileServer checkbox is off: http://<SBOExplorer server>.<company>.com -> unsupported URL
    Which link should I use? Do need Mobi Server to access SBOE from iPhone/iPad?

    Ok. Problem is solved.
    MOBI server is not needed for Exporer for iOS.

  • Onshow event needed for using behavior with AP elements

    Lector has "onShow" and "onHide" actions for layout objects (the equivalent of AP elements). They are my favorite and most used actions. Unfortuneately, Lector will does not reveal the code, so I can't see how they accomplish the actions. I am using Dreamweaver to build my wife's elementary school library web site. I want to use the same onShow and onHide actions (events/functions) for AP elements in Dreamweaver, but they don't exist on the tag inspector list for using with behaviors. Does anyone know how I can make behaviors work when an AP element hides or shows on the screen? This is not the same thing as showing or hiding an AP elemeent for events such as onClick or onmouseover. I find it very curious why Dreamweaver does not have onShow or onHide events along with onClick, onMouseOver, etc. Thanks.

    "Lector" was a late night typo. It is "Lectora", which is an industry leading WBT development tool. My main gripe about it is its proprietary nature--over protective of the code it generates. Lectora will not allow you to see the complex xml code it generates when it creates a web page. (When I display one of the Lectora generated pages in Dreamweaver, it is all xml giberish.) But Lectora is an easy to use, well organized, powerful, automated WBT development tool. Two of its most useful actions for AP elements are the onShow and onHide actions. So when you show or hide an AP element, the physical action of the element hiding or showing will cause a behavior to occur on the same AP element or another AP element.
    For example, say the mouseover Show event for "Element0" causes "Element1" to become visible on the screen. The onShow action provided by Lectora can cause a behavior to automatically occur on Element1 when it "shows" on the screen--no mouse action on elment1 is needed to cause the behavior to happen. Dreamweaver seems to require some sort of mouse action with regard to Element1 to cause a behavior to happen. A problem seems to occur with stacking AP elements and having to use exclusively mouseover and mouseout events on an AP element to cause a behavior(s) to occur. The browser seems to always get confused as to which of the stacked AP elements is supposed to be acting on the mouse action, even if the z order is correct. That is why the onShow and onHide events are so poweful--they don't require another mouse action while the mouse pointer is over the stacked group of AP elements to cause a behavior to happen on the element that was just caused to show or one that was just exposed by another element being hidden. With Lectora's onShow and onHide actions, it works all the time--the browser never gets confused.
    The onShow and onHide actions in Lectora are my favorite because they don't require a second mouse action on an element to cause a behavior to happen. I find that very distressing in Dreamweaver in trying to create highly interactive web pages in Dreamweaver that I can't use onShow and onHide events. It is hard to imagine that only the Lectora creators have the ability/genius to create onShow and onHide code that works for AP element on web pages.
    I can't show you any examples because I create WBT for Federal government projects and I am not allowed to publicly display any of the content. And I can't tell you how Lectora accomplishes it bacause I can't understand their complex, criptic, auto-generated xml code. So I hope I have been able to adequately explain problem here.I can't use Lectora to create the web pages for my wife because she needs to be to maintain her web site using Dreamweaver.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Is there any internet security needed for use with the ipad 2??

    is there any internet security needed for the ipad 2?  I.e. For when you're shopping online etc?

    You don't have to purchase a mouse. You already have one, it's wireless and the only one that will work on an iPad.

  • Recommendations needed for portable hard drives

    Looking for a recommendation for portable hard drives -
    1. I'm buying a new 2TB portable hard drive to use with my iMac for my Time Machine backups.
    2. Additionally, I am buying a second 2TB portable HD for the iMac for SuperDuper back ups (I'm adding a second layer of back up and bootable clone protection to my life).
    3. Finally, I need to also purchase a 1TB portable HD for SuperDuper back ups for my MacBook Air.
    I'd just as soon keep life simple and buy the same brand for all 3 drives. I want things easy.
    (I have Mavericks on both computers and don't want to worry about Western Digital software inadvertently being installed without my knowing it, possible causing me to lose data on my computers. So maybe it would be simplest all around to avoid WD?)
    Simple and easy and reliable - that's all I ask.

    Information.
    Best external hard drive?

  • Recommendation needed for VOIP phone and apple extreme

    I have been with Packet 8 phones for a few years, but they say their phones have problems with Apple Extreme which I just bought.
    So I need to change companies. Anyne have some good recommendations so I don't have to go through this again? Torture. thanks!

    I'd like to "piggyback" on this question. I have the original "family share" plan, (almost 10 years now) I had the only smartphone going back to the Blackberry Curve when that was the "thing" many years ago, so I still have unlimited data on my Razr Maxx. I recently got my wife her first smartphone, with the 2GB plan, last month she used it mostly at home on wifi so she used 0GB my bill which includes a standard phone which was used by my daughter and I'll cancel to reduce my bill, which is now $183. As I look at the shared data plan for even 4GB, (I'm a pretty heavy user with no wifi at work) it would be $180 plus tax. Seems like I'm better off where I am canceling the odd phone will save me what $30 a month?
    Less than I could get on any shared data plan that would cover my usage and her minimal data use. BTW, I have unlimited taxt, she has 250 for $5 a month that she never goes over, and we hvae 700 shared minutes which we haven't come near even when there were 3 of us calling. Any suggestions will be welcome!
    thanks,
    Joel

  • Help needed for using BASIC authentication through JDBCRealm

    Help needed.
    Hello,
    I am doing a degree project, so far it works fine in my local machine, I need to try it on my virtual hosting (as it is a live server).
    My project requires JDBCRealm, that is BASIC authentication loading access data from mysql database. Normally this setup can be done in Server.xml file, because my Tomcat hosting is a virtual one, I only have permission to access the web.xml file.
    My question is: is it possible to get it done in an alternative way? In web.xml? Some properties file maybe?
    Thank you very much.

    You can set this up for your context using META-INF/context.xml instead of working with server.xml.
    Make a directory called META-INF under your webapp ( it'll be at the same level as WEB-INF ). Under this, add a context.xml with all your context specific configuration including the realm. A sample is below
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <Context path="/myApp" reloadable="true">
        <Realm
            className="org.apache.catalina.realm.JDBCRealm"
            driverName="com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver"
            connectionURL="jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://127.0.0.1:1433;DatabaseName=myDB;SelectMethod=Cursor;"
            connectionName="username" connectionPassword="password"
            digest="MD5" userTable="users" userNameCol="userid" userCredCol="userpassword"
            userRoleTable="user_roles" roleNameCol="rolename"
        />
    </Context>Hope this helps.

    That's right,
    You definitely need to talk to the vendor, looks like their website is hosted on Windows Server with ASP and they just announced Microsoft Partnership

  • Recommended design for using multiple PGs for one ACD

    Ref:  ICM 8.5 with Avaya Aura CM 6.3 and AES 6.3
    We have been told by Cisco that we should not have more than 3000 agents+CTI on our current PG pair.  Since we project we will exceed 3000 agents before the end of the year, we are planning to add another PG pair (with CTI).  We have several different lines of business so we just assumed that we should migrate some to be exclusively on the new PG pair.  Of course, that means we will also have to Translation Route calls transferred between the LOB.
    This set us to thinking that there might be a better way.  Does anyone here currently deal with ICM and an Avaya ACD with more than 3000 agents?  If so, can you please share your architecture?  Specifically, do both of your PG pair share the same AES with different Signal ID?  If so, do you share or separate the Switch Links?
    Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

    Thanks for responding, Chris.  We are not using CUCM.  We have Avaya Aura CM.  As such, our Cisco Sales Engineer was quite definitive that our PGs will support 3000 with CTIOS.  We do not use CAD.
    The dual-PG design was our plan.  However, my question is more about whether each PIM needs a separate AES Signal ID and, if so, whether each Signal ID needs a separate CTI link.  I know those are more Avaya-specific question but I'm hoping there is someone on here with a similar environment.
    I had an additional thought today:  It is possible to configure PIMs on two different servers with the same Logical Controller ID such that we would not have to change any Translation Routes.  The Services and SkillGroups would still be separate, of course.

  • URGENT Portable HD Recommendations needed for G4 Powerbook

    PLEASE HELP
    I would like a portable HD to back up and carry my itunes and special files with me on holiday etc...
    I brought an enclosure for an old powerbook HD which was nice and small, but while it powers up when plugged into my Ebook it won't when plugged into my powerbook. Appears that the powerbook does not have enough power to run it or something (of course, being portable, it has no external power supply). Any Ideas of brands that work.
    Thanks

    I use a 120gb Seagate FreeAgent Go. Most of the time it is connected to my AEBS, but I connect it directly to the PB when importing multiple CD's or when on the go. The first portable drive I tried was a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini, but returned it as it required more power than the PB USB ports could put out. I've had this setup for about a year now.
    I recommend getting a second Firewire drive and backup software such as Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to backup your PB and portable drive.
    Hope this bit of info helps.
