I was windering if any of you folks had ever sent your laptop in to a repair company and did you have a good experience?

  • Note Card Recommendation Requested

I like printing photo note cards to give away as gifts to friends and family. The not card format available in iPhoto 9 is the right size but the format is not flexible enough. I like to print my photo on the front, a description of the photo on the back, and leave the interior blank, to be used for writing.
Can anyone recommend a note card "plug-in" that will work with either Aperture or iPhoto or can you recommend another resource where I can find software or a template that will create note cards formatted as I mentioned above?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

Thanks for the tip. I checked them out. Looks good except they want $50 for 25 cards and their logo appears on the back. One thing I did like about apple's cars was that you could remove their logo from the back.
I just tried it out through Flickr. Apparently if you go through Flickr to them the price drops to $41.98 for 25 cards.
Doesn't Apple charge $2 a card? Of course with Moo you have to order 25, you can not buy 2 or 3 or whatever.
Looks like through FLickr you get two lines printed on the back. First one says...
    "Image {copyright symbol} Patrick 2009"
then "moo.com". No logo though. You can add your own stuff to the back as well (in addition, not instead).
By the way, I have never actually ordered cards from Moo.com before, so no first hand experience. My sister ordered some of their MiniCards and they looked very nice. So at least are far as print quality on the MiniCards, they appear to do a good job.

  • Recommendation Request: Best flatbed scanner for use with Mac and iPhoto?

I have a flatbed scanner that Mac doesn't recognize. It's 9 years old, does a great job, but only works with Windows. Period. Don't ask what model or anything, I've already done the research, it's hopeless. MOVING ON... I'm tired of BootCamping to Windows, running scans, and then rebooting and hunting down the files...
So, what flatbed scanner do you use, rank it on scale of 1-10, and how much did it cost?
This thread might be useful to many people... FLATBED scanners, only, please. Make another thread for sheetfed scanners if you like.

This site has some good info on many scanners: Scanner Reviews | Flatbed Scanner |.
I'd look for one with high optical resolution. It's akin to the zoom in digital cameras, optical vs digital. FWIW I use a Canon 8600F (now replace by the 8800F) which does slides, film strips as well a photos. What I like about it is that you can scan multiple photos and have each saved to it's own file. Other brands of scanners offer that as well I'm sure but it'sjust a feature to consider. My scanner also came with a bundled copy of Photoshop Elements for Mac. Not the latest version but worked very well. Its replacement also bundles PSE.

  • 1.4.1 GC recommendation request

I am working on an app where minimizing pause times is critically important (it is a timing app), so I want to keep GC stop-the-world pauses below 10ms on average and worst case. The app will be running in JDK 1.4.1 on a 2-way Windows 2000 machine once deployed.
I have started researching GC tuning but was hoping someone here would have insight on the direction to take for this particular application. The memory dynamics are very simple: there is a relatively small core (<20M) of objects that will stay in memory forever (threadpool, socket listeners, etc) and all other objects are flash-created (on the rate of 1-2MB/sec) with an average lifetime of 10 seconds (and a worst case lifetime of a few minutes).
Intuitively, I think I should size the old generation to contain just the long-living objects (so 30M should do) and should size the new generations such that objects must tenure for quite some time before being promoted to the old. It's acceptable for me to build in some warm-up time at application start to allow the long-living objects to be promoted so that the memory usage can achieve a steady state before I begin my timings.
This seems like it should be a relatively common and readily tuneable memory usage pattern. Has anyone here done any similar tuning? Should I use the parallel garbage collector for the new generation, and would there be any benefit to allocating more GC threads than there are processors? Keep in mind that low pause times take precedence over throughput in this case.
Also, are there any good tools for visualizing the mean and worst case latencies for a given GC config?

For low pause times your best bet is to use the concurrent mark sweep GC for the old generation and the parallel new GC.
    Excellent article:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Programming/turbo/
Bottom line is to make the new generation as big as you can and still live with the pause times. And then you'll want to leave enough space in the old generation to deal with any promoted objects from the new generation.

  • Better Certification Board recommendations (Request for comments)

    Now for something completely differerent:
Jordan,  I appreciate what you tried to do with the Solutions for Review thread but... The latest exchanges (and a few others) on this thread I feel demonstrate why the "Mega-Thread" has already outlived its usefulness.  There a a lot of good tidbits and side discussions buried in this thread that would be much more searchable and cohesive if the posters started their own threads.
Perhaps some new board suggestions for effectivness could be floated in place of the "Sample Exam Solutions for Review"?
Tips on CLD Solutions for review:
Start a new thread - indicate there will be a CLD example for review in the subject line.
For follow-up discussions on critique points start a new thread with a link to the example and a subject about the point under discussion.
This should allow the frequent fliers on this board the chance to develop a useful body of theads where specific points related to Cert specific preparation and concepts can be gathered and easily cross linked by the heavy hitters (And who knows, easilly searched by the certification candidates)
As the board grows I would hate to lose some "gems" in the noise.  If we get together now, to think about what this boards goals are we can maximize our return on investment in supporting certification.
All comments welcome.  Jordan, please consider floating this discussion for maximum visibility.
    Jeff

I think that's a great idea - centralise the submissions and decentralise the critiques.
Another idea to improve the Certification Board might be to introduce subforums for each of the various types of certification (CLAD, CLD, CLA, etc.).

  • Java Heap Size Recommendation Request

Looking for suggestions on tuning. Running CF10 update 13 on a 64 bit server with 8 GB RAM, running into memory issues (I suspect). JVM is only set to 256 / 512 right now, so I'm going to increase it. CF and a handful of sites is pretty much all this server does.
Suggestions on what I should set this to now? We seem to be under 50% memory usage at the present time (right now 3.44GB), and CPU is 0-2%.

    Carl,
Thank you! I appreciate your answer very much, with reasoning and a holistic view.
I will look into Java monitoring. Have not done that yet, but always looking to upgrade my skills.
I can set JVM in CF Admin and have done so. I know there are some things you can do to activate the jvm config file but I haven't had the need to mess with that yet. Thought I changed it once, but it was reset when I restarted CF so swing and a miss.
Systems running better already though with that huge headroom in memory.
    Thanks again!

  • CS4 Installation Recommendations requested

I've searched the forum, but am still confused.
I'm running CS3 Web Premium on Vista 32. There are aspects of some programs, especially FW, that don't play well with Vista, apparently.
I have the opportunity to install a new (not upgrade) copy of CS4 Design Premium with a new licence and am hoping for a clean install.
I welcome any advice you wish to share.
    These questions occurred to me.
    Should I uninstall CS3 first?
If yes, I gather I should 'deactivate' the install first.
Should I then run the CS3 Clean Script?
At the risk of asking too many questions in one post:
Will those DW CS3 extensions I've been using work with DW CS4?
Will the uninstall delete them? Should I save that folder somewhere else on the disc first to copy back later?
    Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but have had company for last
    couple of days.
*Further suggestions if you are still having problems with your CS4 install.
    1. Download and install the Adobe Support Advisor from
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406692.html
    a. Read the error messages it produces and see if this gives you any further
insight. Send me a copy if you like and at least, if it is similar to
problems I have had, I can possibly save you some time not making the same
    errors I made.
    2. Download and follow the instructions to remove selective color profiles

    AND
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408716.html
    3. Consider installing your files from the desktop rather than from the
dvds. This saved me a lot of time because I was dealing with 4 dvds of
    files. Site is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403963.html
4.I found this site to be an excellent "starting point" in researching other

  • IMac 333mhz upgrade recommendation request:)

I am helping a school in Eastern Europe decide what to do with 8 older imacs they inherited recently with the following specs: 333mhz processor, 6 GB hard drive, 160MB RAM (one has 288MB), OS 9.2.2
They would like to primarily do word processing and access the internet. Some computers are in a music school and would like to use garageband and be able to connect to iPod (they don't have yet) if possible.
    Questions:
    1. Is it advisable to upgrade these computers to some version of OSX? (versus leaving them at OS 9)
    2. If so, what version (of OSX) & is 160MB RAM sufficient and is 6GB hard drive sufficient?
    3. These models cannot take an airport card. Do you know of a compatible 3rd party USB wireless adapter - if so, what version of OS X does it require to work and is it compatible with USB 1.1? web site reference that you suggest......
    4. What web browser (& version) will run the fastest on these models?
    5. What word processor is advisable and available to purchase license for? (If MS Word, what version)
Thanks for any advice you can offer!
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
The tray-loading iMacs can handle up to OSX Panther (10.3.9). This will give an older version of the Safari browser, but the latest versions of FireFox and Camino will work under 10.3.9--for now. No one can speculate on how much longer those browsers will run on 10.3. I find Camino faster than FireFox on my machines (same developers, Camino is just Mac-only with a little less overhead).
I believe the small hard drives and the limited RAM are going to hurt these machines for OSX. I like a minimum of 256MB (384MB better) for 10.3, and those 6GB hard drive, while OK in a strictly internet appliance, would not give much room for music or students' personal files. I'd say a 40GB drive would be minimum.
Getting six legal copies of Panther, more RAM and bigger hard drives is going to be a significant expense that has little payback other than a small performance boost. It's like sinking $500 in parts into a $1000 automobile and having it be worth $1050 after all the work. The more you can get donated the better. Is there someone in-country qualified to upgrade the iMacs or will you be going there to do the work?
If you could get someone to donate or sell cheaply some working used Emacs (G4 processors), things would get much easier. They would probably have enough OS, RAM and hard drive space to work without further investment.
I plead ignorance to wireless issues. Your are stuck with USB 1.1 on those machines--no upgrade path.
MS Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition is US$150 and includes licenses for up to three machines. There are some freeware office suite equivalents like NeoOffice but I don't know if it is supported on such old Macs.

  • Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium: Exit code 20 - Media DB Sync Failed

Hello, I am need of some help. I have a MacBook air with OS X Lion. I recently had an issue with my MacBook air and after contacting apple support I was able to recover my user profile. They informed me I would have to reinstall adobe creative suite, as it shows a bunch of question marks on the bottom on my desktop. I have the CD and serial number and am using my windows laptop to share the cd because the MacBook air doesn't have cd-rom. I get past the part to enter the serial number. It looks as though its going to complete the installation but then I get that my installation encountered errors with a message of "Inconsistency in the installer database. Please restart your computer and install again". I have restarted my MacBook and it keeps saying the same thing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jesse.gutierrez this behavior often occurs when applications are migrated/copied/transferred to a new computer.  In the future I would recommend requesting that only documents and settings are transferred to the new computer.
You may be able to recover by utilizing the uninstallers located in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.  Once you have run all available uninstallers then please use the CC Cleaner tool to ensure complete removal.  You can find details on how to download and use the CC Cleaner Tool at Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html.

  • Pre cant display HTML in email?

We are working with a client that is emailing out documents in HTML format. We can open emails with HTML in the body but no the attachments. We can download the file but we just get a "?". If you close the email and open again, you can click on the download file and the browser opens but no content can be displayed.
Is this a bug or another attachment type not supported?

    @espana2004:
I was able to test this myself, and this does not appear to be a bug specifically. Once the html file was saved (I used google.com, very generic), I tapped on the attachment, the web browser opened, and a message appeared at the bottom saying "Cannot display local files."
What this tells me is that webOS does not support rendering of saved html files. Per our support article http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/49685_en.html the only supported file types for downloads are:
      Pictures: JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG
    Videos: MPEG4, H.263, H.264, MP4, M4V, 3GP, 3GPP, 3G2, 3GP2
Music: MP3, AC, AAC+, WAV, AMR, QCLEP
Documents: DOC, TXT, XLS, PPT, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PDF
Support for local html file viewing may be possible in a future update, I would recommend requesting this at www.palm.com/feedback
    Hope this helps,

  • ICal Publish failed

After starting a new .Mac family pack membership. I changed my .Mac user/pass in System Prefs, and "unpublished" the calendars in iCal.
Now, when I go to Publish them I get
    Publish failed for calendar 'Main'.
    Request to the server failed.
Which seems like a connectivity problem but I can Sync perfectly with .Mac and also access my iDisk ok.
I have tried deleting a calendar and re-creating it. I also tried publishing a brand new calendar. Those gave the same errors, so I don't think the problem is in the calendar itself.
This is lame of course, because a main reason for my changing to the family pack was so my workgroup could all publish for group calendaring.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
    David

Apple helped me finally fix this problem. Go into System Prefs, .Mac.
Go to the iDisk tab, and change your Public Folder settings to Read and Write. (This is a temporary change)
Next try several things to test it. Try opening your iDisk from the Finder. Try writing to the iDisk inside a folder such as "Documents".
When I had this problem, the iDisk would not allow writing, and would fail with a disk space error.
You can also test Backup, or Calendar publish now. If everything is working, you can reset the Public Folder settings to Read Only.
What Apple explained to me via phone, is that there was a permissioning error when the new account was originally set up. Somehow, setting it to Read/Write fixes these permissions, and then you can work with all .Mac features as intended. If you still further probs, I recommend requesting to Apple support that they escalate your request to a more highly qualified engineer, and arrange a phone call. That was the deal for me, and he had it fixed in 2 minutes, after months of frustration.
    Best,
    David

  • Variant Values during Run Time

    Hi
I am running a report as background job with a variant "VarOne"  which has the following values
    1. Duration Interval  - value -  60
    2. Program ID.       - value - 00123
    3. Current Date ( Value not saved while creating variant)
    4. Current Time ( Value not saved while creating variant)
While the report is scheduled as background job with a particular variant value.. Is there a table that stores all the VarOne variant values....I want to know the values of 3 and 4. I know that looking at the job scheduling time I can get approximate values..But I need to know a place( like a table) where these variant values are stored.
I have checked the following tables but didnt find the runtime values
    VARID
    VARIT
    TRVAR
    TRVARVC
    TRVARV
    VARICONCI
    VARICON
    Hope My question is clear
    Thank you

VARCH is much the same as any editor (e.g. SE38 or SA38.. or where ever you can display development objects from and choose "variants" from the "Other Objects" menu).
If you can display the variant from anywhere, but not from VARCH, then your concept seems to be a bit strange...
Note that from VARCH you can display and also maintain the variants (if authorized), but you cannot execute the programs (via their variants). That is what it is designed to do, particularly in production systems...
If your program concept in intact and correctly secured, then I recommend requesting standard VARCH to fullfill your requirement.
Your security folks should give you the correct authority to do your job, and not rely on silly tcodes to secure the variants...
    Cheers,
    Julius
