Recommended 9-pin to 9-pin Firewsire cable

Occasionally I've found that my Macbook Pro has lost its connection with my Firewire 800 hard drive. Disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive seems to cure the problem, so I'm guessing that the cable had come loose (only slightly, but just enough to break the connection).
Can anyone recommend a specific Firewire 800 cable that's less prone to coming loose - e.g. one that's a very snug fit?

I just bought a WD 500 GB MyBook (the silver one) about 2 to 3 months ago and it came with a FW 800 cable, so right away I used that instead of the FW 400 and USB cables. Just this past week, I have started having the same problem you are describing where it mounts and then randomly it gives you the warning that the device was not safely removed. I am in the same boat and don't really know what brand of FW 800 cables are the best. Recently I have just been using the FW 400 until I find what the problem is exactly because I don't want to take the chance of my HDD becoming corrupted. So anyone with some tips please help.

I have my Canon GL2 connected to my I-Mac OSX version10.7.3 with a Belkin 800/400 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable and the computer is not acknowledging the camera.

While holding the option key, click the  in the menu bar and select System Information. Select Firewire in the Hardware section and see if your camera shows up as a connected Firewire device. If not, then you have one of three basic problems:
     1. Defective Firewire cable
     2. Defective Firewire port on computer
     3. Defective Firewire port on camcorder
Rule out any of the above by trying a different cable, Firewire device (like a hard drive) or try your camcorder/cable on a different/friend's computer.
If you suspect a Firewire port problem on your computer, you can try resetting it by shutting down and disconnecting the power cable to the computer. Wait for 30 minutes and plug back in and startup. You can also try resetting Parameter RAM (PRAM) on the iMac. (Apple's Instructions for reseting PRAM)

I can't seem to find a straight answer on this.

Or you can use a standard Ethernet cable and use +Fire Sharing+. Both your Macs would have gigabit Ethernet ports, so as long as the cable is Cat-5e or better, it would be pretty fast.

4-Pin to 6-Pin Firewire cable into new iMacs?

Just to build on what Niel indicated... There were two standard FW400 connectors. One was the larger elongated "D" shaped connector and one was the much smaller connector. The difference being that the larger connector had six pins and was able to provide power to devices connected to it. The smaller plug, with 4 pins, lacked the ability to provide power. It could only move data. Devices using the smaller firewire connector would need an alternative power source.
Then along came FW800. If you're not familiar with FW800, I can see how you may confuse that with the older FW400 4 pin connector, but they are not the same. FW800 actually uses 9 pins and is fully backwards compatible with FW400. As Niel indicated, you would need the 6pin to 9pin cable which will allow you to connect the 6pin FW400 to the 9pin FW800 on your MacBook Pro.

I have spoken with NI sales and the best they can offer is the following, which is unfortunately not twisted pair:

Also looked for you at various sources in the UK and The Netherlands but came up empty.
In my case I would solder such cable myself but you don't want to do that.
Perhaps another solution is a flatcable with twisted pair. You can make such a cable without any special tools. If necessary you can use a bench-vice.

My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work

• Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps

Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

800 vs 400 and 9 pin to 4 pin - please help!!

I have a Sony DCR-HC48 with "base station" and just bought a 9 pin to 4 pin cable from Radio Shack. The Gigaware cable says speed supported up to 400Mbps. I plug the 4 pin end into the base station, and the 9 pin into the Firewire 800 port on the back of the computer. iMovie does not recognize the camera, nor is it recognized in System Profiler.
When I plug my Lacie external hard drive into the same port with a Firewire 800 cable, the drive is listed in the System Profiler under Firewire.
My thought is that the cable I have is the wrong one, even though it seems to fit. I'm assuming I need the same cable except one that supports 800Mbps?

If your camera is FW400 and the only port on your computer available is FW800, then you have the correct type of cable, my only suspicion would be that you have a bad cable.
You might also try connecting the camera on it's own (with no other FW devices connected.

It depends on which model of MBP you have to some extent, mamamia23.
1) All of the Unibody models have a FW800 port. For this you will need a cable with a 9 pin FW800 plug on one end and a 4 pin plug on the other. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B94036/ for example.
An alternative would be to buy a FW800 to 400 adaptor like This one, together with a standard FW400 6 pin to 4 pin cable.
2) The pre-unibody models all have a FW 400 port as well as FW800 . In this case a standard FW400 6 pin to 4 pin cable ( like this one ) will do the job.

Mac Pro 800 port (9-pin to 4-pin) what is the point?

I finally found a store that sells the 9-pin to 4-pin cable for firewire 800. But on the packaging it says "up to 400Mbps Transfer Speed."
Does that mean that hooking up my Mac Pro's 9-pin connection to my camera's 4-pin is only going to give me the same as the 6-pin to 4-pin connection?
If so, what is the point of Firewire 800 and the 9-pin connection?

What difference does that make? It's gonna transfer data at video speeds. Even if there was a FW8000 port, it would transfer data at the speed of the material played back from tape real time. That means that data is coming off the tape at about 25mbs... no matter what speed the port is.

i'm wondering if i should buy a 4-pin to 9-pin cable to get the footage off my camcorder onto computer. or save the 9-pin port for something that will definitively run at around FW800 speeds and just buy a 4-pin to 6-pin cable.
so my question is if a FireWire400 device (like a camcorder) is connected to a FW800 port with a FW800 4-pin to 9-pin cable, will it run at around 800Mb/s or 400Mb/s? or if a FW800 device (like a hard drive) is connected to a FW400 port, how fast will data transfer? i'm just asking hypothetically, not if it actually will run that fast.
also, does the cable width matter in the quality/speed of data transfer? could i get a flat retractable cable and not affect quality/speed?

For a camera or even most disk drives the bus speed (800 vs 400) is so much faster that it won't make a noticeable difference. 400 is 50 MB/sec and few external hard drives can do that other than extreme RAIDed ones. DV is only 13GB an HOUR, e.g. 3.6 MB/sec. A USB thumb drive could keep up with it.
Crummy cables can lead to bad results. Intermittent vs. slowness.
Have you actually found a 9 to 4 pin cable? I have 9 to 6 (800 to 400)but never seen a 9 to 4.

D10 and nvidia Titan, Best solution to power required 6 pin and 8 pin input

For gpgpu programming and computing I would like to install a nvidia gtx Titan.
This card has a TDP of 300 Watts, and the manufactor requires a 650 W PSU.
So we thought that the D10 should be ok.
The problem is that it needs a 8 pin and a 6 pin power input. The D10 only has 2 6 pin connectors.
I saw some adapter cables on the market:
the safest seemed using a:
2 x 6 pin to 8 pin.
2 x molex to 6 pin.
The problem is that there is only 1 molex.
if i am correct the 6 pins are rated 75W and the 8 pins 150W
There are some people using 1x 6 pin to 8 pin adapters, some say its ok, some say its dangerous.
What would you recomend?
(1 x 6 pin to 8 pin) and (6 pin)
or
(2 x 6 pin to 8 pin) and ([sata to molex] + molex in a 2x molex to 6 pin)

Yesterday i finaly got the 6to8 pin addapter. So i tried using that on the P5 (6 pin) and to use the the P4 as the standard 6 pin, as suggested. In the beginning if i change something about my D10 i always get some boot errors the first few startups that dissapear as soon as i enter and save and exit the bios. But then it worked
My first surprize was that the Zotac Titan amp edition, was really quiete under idle.
I could not really test a lot because normaly i have to work using 2 monitors, and i didnt have the proper addapter to mount 2vga monitors, (i needed a DVI-D to vga adapter or a hdmi to vga addapter, this evening when i finish my regular work i will test it again).
In the 1.5 hours that i used the d10 with the Titan it i got one strange screen blackout and i had to reboot.
When i tried to install the drivers from the DVD, and the DVD started spinning, full power, the display went black, and didnt got back again without a restart. I think that could be a power issue.
I will test it some more, running a gpu benchmark test, and trieng to copy something from a dvd in the same time.
In case it will happen more frequently the Juice box suggested could be an idea, although i think that i dont like the sound of the 3 high speed fans. My D10 is so queiet even with the Titan.
A second isue is that i wanted to try to use the standard nvidia quadro fx 1700 in my D10 next to the gtx Titan.
(to use the quadro for my monitors, and the titan for running gpu programs)
When i tried both together the fan of the quadro (which is normaly very quiete) was running on full power inmediatly after booting, And then gave an error in windows, and didnt give any graphical troughput, but the titan did.
So open points are:
1)if i can reproduce the black screen when playing a DVD or under high load,
2)trying to run 2 graphic cards in parralel. (the second card beign a low power one)
I will update.
