I was planning on buying a new 13 inch MacBook Pro with 512 GB memory and 8GB RAM. The main purpose for this purchase Is to be able to run Final Cut Pro anywhere I want to. Should I upgrade to 16 GB of RAM with the added expense and wait time or is that overkill?

8GB should be plenty  .  .  .  though as with most things in life, it all depends on exactly what you are doing. If you intend to edit long, highly complex projects loaded with effects and multicam clips you can't get enough RAM.
For over 3 years, I and many others, have been  using 4GB with no problems.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Will Logic Pro X run on the latest MBA with i5 and 8GB RAM?

    Hi,
want to buy the new Logic Pro X but I´m not sure if it will rum smoothly on my MBA 2013 with i5 and 8GB Ram.
I saw some very promising posts on the i-net regarding Logic Pro 9 which seems to run nice. But does the latest version of Logic require more hardware power?
Can anybody share any experience on this?
    thanks!

Logic Pro X has got some system requirements, and your MacBook meets all of these requirements > https://www.apple.com/logic-pro/specs/
Have a look at the Logic forum and read experiences. Also, there are reviews over the Internet, but if Logic Pro 9 works properly in that MacBook, Logic Pro X will also run properly

  • Installed SSD and 8GB ram, Now Drive wont read Cds

I have a late 09 15" Macbook Pro.  Today I installed an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and 8gb of Crucial ram, I also disabled SMS and made it so the drives wouldnt go to sleep.  Everything works REALLY fast and great except for some reason now when I put a CD in, the computer thinks its blank.  Dvds work fine.
Any ideas?  Maybe I bumped the connector on the drive?

I booted off of my old drive just to see if its a SSD issue.  It does the exact same thing booting form the original hard drive.  Also I took the optical drive out and gave it a visual, double checked the connections too.  I also tried to reenable SMS and that didnt make any difference.  It all seems OK, but it still doesnt like CDs.
Seems odd that my drive would stop working at the exact same time that I change to an SSD.

  • Purchase questions: solid state drive and 8GB RAM

I am finally going to upgrade from my PBG4, and I am salivating over either a 13" or 15" MBPro. Two questions:
    1) A solid state drive is expensive, but the way I abuse laptops, it may be worth it. In addition to being more rugged, what are its other advantages? Is it faster than a 5400 or 7200 rpm hard drive? Does it boot/shut down faster? What else?
    2) I do graphics, so 8GB RAM can help me with Photoshop, etc. If I can get 4GB RAM chips elsewhere cheaper than through Apple, can I upgrade the RAM myself, without voiding the Apple warranty?

You're probably about as good a candidate as there is for a big (250GB) SSD, but only for the sake of its ruggedness. The current small sizes of SSDs compared to HDs will be a serious disadvantage for anyone who works with a lot of graphics. SSDs are still in their infancy, and there are large variations in speed from one to another and new models coming out almost weekly. Taken overall, any SSD will be as fast or faster (and some are *many, many* times faster) than any conventional notebook hard drive. But some are slower than fast hard drives for certain operations, e.g. sustained large writes. Try to pick one that's fast across the board, because they'll all be highly shock-resistant (and astronomically expensive) compared to any HD. It's going to take a bit of Googling to dig up many reports — I haven't seen any big "roundup"-style tests yet myself, but that doesn't necessarily mean there haven't been any. Here's one test that may or may not be representative:
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard121.html
With respect to MBPs themselves in your situation, we haven't heard from anyone in these forums since the introduction of the unibody MBPs who has reported how well they've held up to the kind of ultra-rough handling you describe. If there are some uMBPs out there with you, you would know better than we do, and you'd have a better chance than we do to ask how well they survive. Hard drives would certainly be among their most vulnerable parts, but I would also ask pointedly about display hinges, glass display covers, optical drives, and above all, dealing with dust. These machines can't be sealed, and their keyboards and ports can't be cleaned easily or effectively. In a desert setting, I would think keeping a keyboard cover in place, taping over the ports, optical drive slot and speaker grilles when they're not in use, and finding access to a vacuum from time to time would be essential if at all possible. Even so, the fans in these machines run all the time, and they will continually draw dust inside.
    Good luck in your research.

  • Late 2009 Mini with 10.6 and 8GB RAM crashes, please advise ?!

    Hi
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM and an Intel X25-M 160GB SSD. Running 10.6 fully updated and installed from scratch.
I have been getting out of the blue crashes while the system is most of the times idle. Can it be the 8GB Ram? The SSD runs latest firmware.
This is the log from the last crash which happened a little ago. Can anyone help please?

The Mini came with 1GB Samsung which I've upgraded to 2 x 2GB Samsung. Then after a few months I bought the 2 x 4GB OCZ which initially was ok, but after a few months the system would crash out of nowhere. So I wiped off the OS and reinstalled 10.6 After a few days my first crash appeared, which is where the logs on my first post come from.
I will keep my 4GB Samsung RAM for a few weeks and if no errors appear then it was most probably because of the RAM. I believe there is some incompatibility between the Mini and some memory chips as the memory itself come out clean from Memtest86 and has lifetime warranty as well.

  • Brand New Lenovo Y5070 (I7 4270HQ/8GB RAM/Geforce 960M 4GB) - All Freeze, Sound Continue!

Hello Support, Last evening I bought this high-end model of Y5070 in Chiang Mai as I spend a month here now:(I7 4270HQ/8GB RAM/Geforce 960M 4GB) I am Microsoft Windows 10 Insider Edition User and while it works fine for most I've this strange issue. I've installed today fresh Windows 10 build 10130 (latest build), some drivers were missing so I used Lenovo drivers CD to install the win 8.1 drivers (Microsoft suggest to use Win 8.1 drivers on Win 10). All works good besides, it has random freeze, everything freeze, but youtube/music keep singing and it will stay like this until i click POWER button on the laptop then after a minute it goes sleep and when it wakes up all fine again. I did installed 100% fresh win 10 setup.  If this issue is due to Win 10 I can go and install win 7 or 8.1. But it sounds not very normal to me since i dont see other win 10 users having this issue. Please assist me asap as long as I am here in Thailand/Chiang Mai and still can go to store for replacement if needed. Thank you so muchRoman

when the screen freezes and the audio is still playing i would look at the gfx card drivers

use driver sweeper to remove the old drivers then start with the top one and test each one and see if any improve or fix it

  • Does anyone know which will be faster, an i5 2.5 ghz with a cheap ssd and 8gb ram or a standard i7 2.3 ghz

Does anyone know which will be faster, i will be using it mostly for garageband and tv/movies and occasionally games.
    Any responses appreciated

  • I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full. But I have lots of RAM available.  Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Could my machine be spending SSD space and not RAM?

I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full.  I have tons of RAM available. Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Thanx.

Hello and thanqueue again KW.  I have had power management issues in the past tho they seemed to disappear with a new battery.  But I'll try this before I do the dreaded re-install.  haha.  And resetting the PRAM is something one should do from time to time if I recall correctly.  And it's been at least 3 years since I did that.
So I'll probably try that again.  Thanqueue.
And as I mentioned above, yeah I probably don't even have an SSD, I'd never heard of it before the other night and know I've never purchased one.  So thanx pop-iup for the totally bogus info, tho it's gotten me to this discussion page which is very helpful and I appreciate the suggestions.
In its favour, the machine will shut down normally when I'm brave enough to do so.  But it's quite a few moments till all the desktop is restored again when repowered, so I do tend to keep it in sleep mode for days, even weeks sometimes, knowing I'm putting extra wear and tear on it.
But at one point a few years ago, it took 5 minutes just to hear the chime.  It's better now, I hear the chime almost immediately, then it clunks into working mode obviously quite overburdened.  It's a wonder it's still speaking to me!  And I use it fairly heavily without too much problem (tho have some spods and the occassional app crash), have over a million files, I suppose that's not unusual.. it was making duplicate files on its own for a while but I think that's stopped.  hahaha.  etc etc and so on.
But it is very odd to have it, with a battery full of power or even plugged in, just drop out of commission when my back is turned lol for even a few minutes.  There seems to be some misguided trigger at work.  So I'll czeck those power re-sets and see if that takes care of it.
    Domo gosaimashita!

  • Snow and Boot Camp and Windows 7 64 Bit and 8GB RAM

So - here is my problem...
I hab my MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) running with 4 GB RAM and Leo 10.5.8. I used Leo Boot Camp to have my Vista 32 Bit running for my office things. Everything worked fine.
Then I decided to do two things.
    - Upgrade to Snow Leopard and install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. (I have it already.)
    - Upgrade memory to 8 GB RAM
    Step 1.
I did the upgrade to SL. No problems. Then I did the installation of Windows 7 64 bit. No problems. The machine is running stable.
    Step 2:
I upgraded the memory to 8 GB RAM. SL boots without any problems and shows 8 GB RAM. But Windows 7 no refuses to boot. So I tried to install Windows Server 64 Bit. No sucess. I tried Vista 64 Bit - no sucess. I even tried Linux 64 Bit - no sucess.
And here are the funny details:
    1. SL works fine with the 8 GB of RAM.
    2. Windows 7 64 Bit refuses to boot with 8 GB of RAM.
    3. Windows 7 64 Bit works stable with 6 GB of RAM.
    4. Windows 7 64 Bit works stable with 4 GB of RAM.
What is the reason? I thought it could be an EFI problem. Just like EFI ist in 32 Bit (but Windows works with 6 GB of RAM). Or do I make a stupid user error???
Should I press a certain key while booting the machine with boot camp? Do I need an EFI patch?
    Please help!
    Robert.

Actually you don't need an EFI64 ROM to support 8 GBs of RAM. That is determined by the bus size and the memory controller. The ROM only determines the maximum amount of RAM that the OS can address. None of the Macs currently in production can support even the maximum supported by the 32-bit kernel. None have a wide enough memory bus. Of course newer models may support larger amounts of RAM when they are released, but for now there's not much need for using the 64-bit kernel except if you are developing 64-bit software and need to test its compatibility with the 64-bit ROM.

  • HYPER-V problem (Thinkpad Twist with Win 8 Pro 64bit and 8GB Ram)

Hi, I have the problem to run hyper-v and getting the error "hypervisor" is not running.  I have checked my hardware and OS should be able to run, and also done the command "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto".  Does anyone got the same problem or advise?
    Thanks.

i am not sure if this is applicable to you.

  • 8GB RAM and Oracle 9i RC2 SLES8-64

We have a Server with AMD64 and 8GB RAM running with the combination of Suse Enterprise-Server 8 and Oracle 9i RC2.
Is it possible to let the Database work with 6GB or more?
    Is the Version 9i RC2 a 32bit or 64bit Database?

  • 8GB RAM but still uses scratchdisk, why?

    Hey,
running x64 version of Photoshop CS5 with windows 7 proffessional and 8gb ram but I still occasionaly (if the HDD is near full) get a "could not complete ... scratchdisk full" or similar error message (even just for simple tasks such a CtrlTransform or rotation).
It has long bugged me that it is even using a scratchdisk when it has access to 8gb ram, any explanation? It doesn't run extremely slow or anything so it can't be page filing *that* much.
    Thanks in advance

Ok, I just ran a quick test and made a new black document 300000x300000px and duplicated the base layer 10 times.
I just go to use the brush tool on one of the layers and get "could not use the brush tool because the scratchdisks are full".
Windows Taskmanager reckons photoshop is using about 300mb RAM so it shouldn't even be *thinking* about page filing yet, and as you said, HDDs are dirt cheap and it has access to more than 1.5tb worth of internal HDDs if really wants to scratchdisk...
it feels like it's limited both in it's use of ram and use of hdd but i just double checked and it is allowed ~6gb ram and all HDDs are checked to be used as scratchdisks. perplexed
*edit*: it has allocated every scrap of space to itself on every hard drive available including an external so about 2.5TB
so why didn't it use reall memory first?
*edit2:* oh but i'm starting to see what's going on, in the same way it didn't need to write all those blank layers to the hdd it didn't actually need to use all that ram, each new layer was probably just a copy on-write pointer which means my test was meaningless
