Recommended DPI settings

Looking for some advice on DPI settings when exporting Nikon D200 RAW images to print photos, books, converting from RAW to JPEG etc.
At what point does it make no difference except file size?
Thanks.
iMac Intel Core Duo 20", 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Nikon Coolscan V ED, Nikon D200, Iomega MiniMax Drives

DPI is used only to determine how large to print an image. In other words, if you have an image that's 3000 pixels wide and you set it to print at 300 dots per inch, it will print at 10 inches wide. If you have an image that's only 300 pixels wide and you print it at 300 dpi, it would only be 1 inch wide.
That is the only use of DPI. DPI does not determine an image's digital resolution. The number of pixels determines the image's resolution.
Generally speaking, if you're printing an image on paper you're better off with the largest image you can get.
At what point does it make no difference except file
size?
When you are exporting an image to be used in a digital presentation, such as on a web page or on TV, that's when you don't need to worry about DPI. That's when what only matters is the number of pixels in the image.
For example, if you export that image that's 300 pixels wide to display on a computer screen that's 1280 pixels wide, the image will take up about a quarter of the screen. And it doesn't matter at all what DPI setting you might have set.
You can download a PDF file of a chapter from one of my old Photoshop books that explains digital imaging resolution at http://www.seekpeace.com/viz/res/Resolution.pdf.

  • Forms Central - Internet Explorer Recommended Browser Settings

I created a form in Adobe Acrobat X Pro, added it to Forms Central and then linked it to our company website for members to complete and then click submit.  I have a member that said her submit button will not work, she clicks it and nothing happens.  My question: What is the recommended browser settings for Internet Explorer to be able to submit the form.

Most of the major browsers have some sort of PDF preview built into them. These preview capabililties don't have enough functionality to allow filling in of PDF Forms. Therefore regardless of browser or platform (Mac) you likely need to install our Acrobat Reader plugin. Additionally in some cases you will need to tell the browser that you want to use our (Adobe Reader) plugin when displaying PDF. Each browser is a little different, but the concept is the same.

  • Recommended security settings

    Hello,
Could someone advise me on recommended security settings?  I have ipv4 enabled, and checked the following:
    1. ipv4 firewall
    2, filter anonymous internet
    3. port 113
...is there anything else that I should enable / disable?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you have good firewall settings.
Just to be sure you can run a ShieldsUP all ports port scan.

  • Server 2008 SP2 DPI settings

We are running a Windows 2008 Standard SP2 32-bit terminal server. One of the users would like to have the option to change the DPI settings under their session. I found a MS hotfix, but it does not apply to this version (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2726399)
Does anyone know if there is another hotfix or update planned to address this? We have changed the resolution settings on the client computers, but was curious if anyone had any additional information on whether this may be
    addressed or not. Thanks.

    Hi,
I would like to check if you need further assistance.

  • How do you change the dpi settings in iPhoto

How do you change the dpi settings in iPhoto

Short answer: the dpi is set when you decide what size you're printing at.
Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing.  Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • Xorg DPI settings won't save

Following the wiki, I decided to check if my DPI settings were correct, and fix them if they were not. These are the results I'm getting (full commands typed out for clarity):
First, without any configuration, the screen settings:
    $ xinit /usr/bin/awesome -- :0
    $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
    screen #0:
    dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (508x285 millimeters)
    resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
This is wrong. Altering the commandline -dpi parameter results in the following:
    xinit /usr/bin/awesome -- :0 -dpi 165
    $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
    screen #0:
    dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (295x166 millimeters)
    resolution: 165x165 dots per inch
This is right. For a more permanent solution one might alter xorg.conf settings, which I did:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-dpi.conf
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    DisplaySize 295 166
    EndSection
However, it results the default 96x96 DPI, as you saw in the first code snippet. Furthermore, directly editing the DPI in xorg.conf such as this:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-dpi.conf
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    Option "DPI" "166 x 166"
    EndSection
again results in the default 96x96 DPI.
Interestingly enough, if I deliberately put some bogus values into the config, Xorg complains about it and will not start up. So the config file IS being read, and there are apparently no errors in it. As well the other .conf files in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory is working (such as fonts.conf, which I am using to include /usr/share/font directories).
Why is the config not applying?

I think you can put it in .Xdefaults or .Xresources:

I looked this up also, and found that Xorg0.log gives different results then xdpyinfo :
    $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
    screen #0:
    dimensions: 1920x1200 pixels (508x317 millimeters)
    resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
    Xorg.0.log
    [7232.286] (**) RADEON(0): Display dimensions: (520, 320) mm
    [ 7232.286] (**) RADEON(0): DPI set to (93, 95)
No 90-monitor.conf file present, and Xorg.0.log only has 2 other lines with dpi , both about font paths.
So the question seems to be : which is right, Xorg.0.log or xdpyinfo ?
Interesting... The xdpyinfo one is correct (I can tell because of text sizes). However, when starting X without the -dpi argument it shows this:
    [ 2194.180] (**) intel(0): DPI set to (174,171)
Not only is this the wrong DPI for my monitor, but it isn't the actual DPI that X is using. xdpyinfo correctly displays that the DPI is 96x96. However, if I launch X with the -dpi argument then Xorg.0.log will report the correct DPI (what I set it to). I really have no idea what's going on. I just wish my DPI settings would save!

  • Firefox Sync synchronizes DPI settings for Gmail

I set up Firefox Sync on a computer with a large monitor (a TV actuall) and I had to increase the DPI in the Gnome monitor settings in order for text to be readable on the large monitor. Now, using Firefox Sync on a laptop with a much smaller monitor, it appears the DPI settings have been synced for Gmail. Gmail somehow stores this information and Firefox has synced it. Is there a way to avoid this? Perhaps I should ask Google instead?

nokia messaging email is supported in your device. Install it using the settings wizard(if preinstalled in device) or go to nokia messaging email site and choose your device and enter your phone no to get a link to download the app. Using the app you can choose to setup your multiple accounts in a single app to access all your mails together or you can set up a manual mailbox in messaging folder that delivers messages manually for a single account that you choose for.

  • X60 factory and recommended BIOS settings?

Service guy changed some BIOS settings from factory default said it saves some energy and reduces CPU heat. My system overheated, previous service forgot to clean the inside, congratulations.
So my question is what are recommended BIOS settings for the X60, recommended changes from default? Service guy forgot to tell me what he changed so if I reset I can't get back to the settings he  implemented.
So preferably I would need the original settings printed, too, so I can compare it with the changes.

    Thanks for the reply.
The BIOS shows the modules are running at 1333.

  • Change DPI Settings

Is it possible to let users change the DPI settings on a terminal server running Windows Server 2008 x86 ?

    Hi Nik,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Regular users (and users in a remote session) can adjust many UI elements individually however, using the "Window Color and Appearance" in the Personalization Control Panel applet. In Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, the settings are accessed via "Advanced
appearance settings...", after choosing "Windows Color" in the Personalization window. In Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, the settings are accessed via the "Advanced..." button, after choosing "Windows Color and Appearance" in the Personalization window.
    More information.
The DPI adjustment is not available in a Remote Session (RDP)

  • SVG DPI settings

    Good afternoon,
I am under the impression that the default / ONLY DPI setting when saving as the .SVG file format is 72 in all CS# versions of AI, however does AI have the ability to save in any other DPI settings, (72/90/150/300) & if so, how can I use them?
    Kind regards,
    Symon

The development team is working on an application that must respect all SVG DPI settings, at present some SVG's are being rendered in said application larger or smaller than expected, thus we came to the conclusion that AI may have been setting DPI to a different value other than the Default 72, We are not Designers, but we need to support the SVG File Format with all it's usable settings.
    Kind regards,

  • Xorg.conf DPI settings VS. fonts DPI settings - Confusing!

I honestly have to admit, that I don't get it. Having a ThinkPad T42p with a 1600x1200 LCD with the visible dimensions of 304 x 228 mm, I have set that in xorg.conf ("DisplaySize  304 228"), which results in Xorg setting up 133x133 DPI on start (without specifying this DisplaySize setting, it defaults to 75x75 DPI).
133 DPI results in fonts displayed way too large, although I remember WinXP (which came preinstalled with this laptop) setting 133 DPI as well, which also gave large fonts, but not that large as seen with Xorg.
I am now using KDE (specifically funkyou's KDEMOD), and I have set "Fixed DPI: 96 DPI" in font-settings, which means, text is displayed in a reasonable size with 96 DPI, but Xorg is still set to 133 DPI:
    $ xdpyinfo | grep res
    resolution: 133x133 dots per inch
I really don't understand this font vs. Xorg DPI setting. How does this fit together?
Why are fonts shown way too large at 133 DPI, if that's the correct DPI setting for my screen size & resolution?

Why does it need to scale properly, if Xorg should already have set DPI to the correct value calculated from the display size?
How did you determine, that 100 DPI is the correct fonts-DPI-setting for your display?
This is just weird, because setting the DPI setting for fonts does not influence the DPI setting of the X server (that's what I mentioned above, selected "Fixed DPI: 96" in KDE's font-settings, and xdpyinfo still reports 133 DPI).
Concerning my LCD, 133 DPI seems reasonable for my 15" laptop-display with relatively high native resolution of 1600x1200, so the Xorg setting surely is correct. But why do I then need to set 96 DPI for fonts to be displayed in a proper size?
Even more confusing is, that the settings for the ATI Radeon open-source-driver offer even more options concering DPI:
    #Option "MergedDPI" # [<str>]
    #Option "ConstantDPI" # [<bool>]
As seen, I have not enabled these, but that makes altogether 4 different settings for influencing DPI.
Fact is, 96 DPI in KDE's fonts-settings seems to lead to the desired result, although that value should not be the proper one for my display-size & resolution, as well as I have no idea, what the X server resolution (133x134 DPI) is all about, especially because it does not seem to be of any importance if font-settings are forced to a different DPI setting (which means, it does not seem to matter, if the X server resolution is set to 75x75, 96x96 or 133x133 DPI, as long as the option for force fonts at 96 DPI is selected in KDE's fonts-settings).

  • RRM Neighbor Message/RRM Neighbor Message dBm threshold/Recommended TPC settings

From reading Cisco’s Radio Resource Management under Unified Wireless Networks (Document ID: 71113) and the following Post (https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10747596/configure-rrm-wlcs-avoid-interferences), I have a few questions which I am trying to get some clarification.
    Questions
What is the default dBM an AP needs to receive/ “hear” a Neighbor Message at? Towards the beginning of the document, it states “…WLCs will add neighbors to their lists given they are heard at greater than or equal to -80 dBm and will only then remove them once their signals dip below -85 dBm.”  However, towards the middle of the document, it states “the RF Group Leader will apply the TPC algorithm on a per-band, per-AP basis to adjust AP power transmit levels downward such that the third loudest neighbor AP will then be heard at a signal level of -70dBm (default value or what the configured value is) or lower and the TCP hysteresis condition is satisfied.”
When a Neighboring AP is no longer “heard” at -85 dBm or better, is the RF coming from the AP considered interference, co-channel interference if the two APs are on the same channel, Foreign Interference, or noise?  I think it is co-interference but I am not sure.
What are the recommended settings for the power?  Is it best practice to go with the defaults (Max 30 dBm/Min -10 dBm)? Reading the following post from Araon (https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10747596/configure-rrm-wlcs-avoid-interferences) he recommended -74dBm based upon the output from the show ap auto-rf 802.11b <Cisco AP Name>.   I am open to suggestions. (Please note:  I do see this AP does not “hear” three other APs at -85 dBm or better. I understand this does affect RRM.)
    Thank you,
    T.J.

    Hello Philip,
    Thanks for your valuable inputs.
Tweaking in max & min Tx power would certainly help us keep tab on upper on lower transmit powers that we want our APs to be working in.
I was looking for a solution wherein rrm is influenced such that the power is lowered approximately one step down so as to contain co-channel interference. Tweaking in 'transmit power threshold' really came in handy for me. Got the expected response from a test setup( https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/message/461855#461855 ). Will be putting it into production and sharing here the results.
Now the only concern was no having all the APs with 'transmit power threshold' changed from default. Want to keep it an hybrid environment, few with -75dBm and others with default -70dbm.
Would AP grouping/ rf profiling come in handy for me?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Adnan

  • Where do I change the dpi settings for creating a jpg in Bridge CS5?

I upload jpgs to an online site to be viewed in a browser. I've been using Bridge CS5 to batch process the jpgs from high quality pdfs. The settings I see when I do the settings to create the jpgs will only give me Maximum settings and the option to set it on 12 but when I open the jpg that's created in Photoshop, it's still 72. I would like to have at least a 150 dpi setting. I've searched and can't find any help online. What am I doing wrong, or isn't there any place to give me the option to change the settings to a higher dpi in Bridge? If this isn't possible, what do you suggest to make the process go faster? I'm using the Adobe CS5 programs.
Thanks in advance for any help.

"Maximum" and "12" usually refer to compression (influencing image quality and jpeg file size in bytes); and as Curt wrote, dpi is meaningless for display by and viewing in web browsers.  (It could be a different matter if you are uploading the jpeg files for someone to download from the web to print.)
What are the sequence of steps that you and your batch processing take from Bridge?
You can use call Photoshop's Image Processor from Bridge to create the jpeg files  (Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor).  In the Image Processor you can set jpeg compression, pixel dimensions if desired, also convert to sRGB (good idea for web display).  In my experience the image processor leaves unchanged whatever dpi is set in the source file; or, if none there as might be for a pdf, it will set the dpi value in your New Document Preset Print Resolution (from your Photoshop Units & Rulers preferences).

  • Recommended Word Settings

    Hi All,
I am searching for a document or documents that provide recommended MS Word settings in the options of MS Word.  I have a user that can view a WWI report from template once and then any subsequent reports just hang and never open.  This problem is isolated to that users computer.  That is to say, she can use my computer with her credentials in SAP and has no problems.  I cannot see anything out of the ordinary in any of the settings.  We've reinstalled her front end and MS Office with no luck.  I would just like a document that details the correct settings as a base line.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
I found below few SAP notes which may be useful in this case
