Recommended DVD-R media for DVD Studio Pro

I've just upgraded my Mac to a dual processor 2.3 GHx G5, and I've been having trouble burning DVD projects to DVD-R media from DVD Studio 3. The drive will either spit the disk out or it will go through the burn process, and the "burn successful" will pop on the screen in DVD Studio, but the DVD will be blank. It doesn't seem to be consistently doing this, so I think it may be the media I'm using, but I can't find a list of recommeded DVD-R brands.
My SuperDrive is a Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A:

Not totally. RW discs are great for proofing and personal use. It's always a good idea to have a player that can play ±RW discs as it saves you having to use ±R media...
But yeah, you might have wasted the money, they aren't that much these days though... there are plenty of worse ahhhhh situations in dvd authoring,

  • What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006)?

What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) model? I would like to
add more hard drive space by utilizing the three available slots. However, from my understanding,
Apple does not produce hard drives for my older computer so I'll need to turn to a third party.

You are very much over-due for some new larger more efficient drives.
the most common best approach goes something like this....
    SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and  put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
Probably want to add or replace FBDIMMs you have, these are excellent and price in the last year has fallen.
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $29
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
    WD Black 1TB $93

    WD Green 3TB $149 - backup

    WD VR 10K 250GB $103 200MB/sec boot drive :

Those last and last and make a nice boot drive.
    SSD: Samsung 840 128GB

Over-due to upgrade and replace the graphic card most likely it sounds like also:
    ATI Radeon 5770

Your OEM 7300GT isn't helping now and with Lion or the X1900 dust magnet and out of date too. If you have a functional 8800GT still working you are lucky and no need.

The MPEG2-DVD preset also produces a DVD spec-legal file.  If you use the generic MPEG2 preset, you can too easily create an out-of-spec file that will have to be re-transcoded by En.

  • Can anybody recommend an anti-virus for my macbook pro

Can anybody recommend an anti-virus for my macbook pro
I have started to get attachments to my fsmail account from known sites but when opened I'm greeted by a a sentence in French that has the words orange and virus in it. Unfortunately I cannot speak French so are unsure what it is. I believe that my email and possibly my computer has been attacked?
Any views recommendations would be most welcome.
    Trevor

This forum is for questions about the Communities themselves. You'll usually be more likely to get a quick and helpful answer if you post in the  forum dedicated for your product. Anyway, my standard antivirus spiel:
At this time there have been no confirmed Mac OS X viruses (subject to the semantic debate about whether the old iChat exploit, now long since blocked, was properly classified as a virus or a trojan horse, and not counting the Word macro virus that can affect Office v.X or non-updated copies of Office 2004), very few trojans and no adware or spyware. I therefore do not feel that antivirus or antispyware software is necessary at this time as long as users are careful about what they download from the Internet or accept as attachments via email.
The most common exploit is a recent outbreak of "scareware" that people are encountering while web surfing. This "scareware" pops up and claims that your system is infected with viruses, prompts you to download their "scanner", then tells you that you need to purchase their paid software to remove them. These fake applications, appearing by many names including Mac Defender, Apple Security Center, Apple Web Security, and many others, do nothing at all other than turn off the fake warnings once they have your money. DO NOT fall for these.
Security precautions for Mac OS X mostly are common sense: don't download and run files from sites you don't know, don't fall for any "you have viruses" messages, don't double-click on attachments in emails you aren't expecting and/or from people you don't know, and make sure you password your system with a non-trivial password and keep that password secure. In addition, don't leave your system available in a public place and unattended where someone unauthorized could use it and potentially install malware (such a policy is also a precaution against theft).
It is possible for a Mac user to inadvertently forward a Windows virus to a PC user though you'd have to do it manually so the above precautions would probably prevent such virus-spreading, and said Windows virus cannot infect the Mac.
If you do decide you wish to run antivirus software, I think that the donationware clamXav should be more than enough. iAntivirus has also been recommended by others, though I have no personal experience with it.
If you are running Windows on your system, either via BootCamp, Parallels Workstation or another solution, then that copy of Windows is subject to all the myriad exploits common to the Windows world, so you need to take full precautions, including running both antivirus and antispyware software.
    Regards.

  • Anyone recommend reliable DVD-R media for big run?

    Hi All;
I have a couple LARGE jobs coming up in the next few months , 100 disc copies per, and wondering what you all have had good luck with as far as dvd player compatability? (ie returns due to ' skips in my dvd player etc ...') I encode at around 4-5mbs with AC-3 audio... the program is roughly 95 mins on 1 disc.
I have been using Maxell DVD-R's for last few small runs and have had good luck... I have a bunch of Ritek's coming from Ebay to test...
    thanks in advance...

What a GREAT resource for information! Thanks for the post...
We've been in the DVD business for almost 10 years now and in the early days, the only discs we used were Pioneer. Always great luck back then, but then again, discs were $100.00 each when we first started! Hey, the burner was $10K!
Now, we stick with Maxell media. Also great luck. We've used Kodak with only a few bad spindles and I just purchased TDK for the first time. Great price at our local Costco.
Good luck with your project. Buy high quality and pay more, but suffer no headaches in the end.

  • How do I obtain product recovery media for my Satelite Pro A100?

When I purchased my A100, I was not given any product recovery media. I assumed that it would be pre - installed on a partition on my hard drive. Seems not to be the case.
I wish to resize my primary partition to enable me to install linux on the space that would then be available. Whilst Linux will do that for me, just in case there is an error, I need a copy of the product recovery media for XP and other pre-installed software. Toshiba's contact details on the site are hard to locate.
So I wondered if anyone can point me in the correct direction? I am a UK user.

    Hi
If the recovery disk was not shipped with the notebook, then you should be able to create an recovery disk using the preinstalled tool called Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.
I think you didnt read the user manual after you have received the notebook
Anyway usually the Recovery disk could be ordered here:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
But not all recovery disks would be available especially if the notebook series has been discontinued this means that you could not order a recovery disk if the notebook series is too old You could also try to contact an local ASP (service partner) in your country for a help and could try to order such disk there.
Otherwise you have to use an original MS Windows disk all needed drivers are downloadable from the Toshiba European driver page.

  • DVD Media for DVD+/- RW 16x Double Density?

I've got a eMachine C3070 with a DVD+/- RW 16x Double Density, wondering whats the cheapest media to buy for backup data/music/movies, etc?   I've got a friend that just bought a new pc, needs to dvd's to backup his vista image (system restore cds), so I'm gonna give him a few, too.
Which would you recommend the, for example, the $7.99, 25pack of DVD-R's are those ok?
    crashstar2000

actually Verbatim is still made by Verbatim (Mitsubishi Kagaku) although it is true that more and more is being OEM'd  primarly by MBI and Ritek.   Especially duplication grade.
TDK has not made anything for a long, long time (OK they have a plant for BD-R but that will not last long).   Most of that is made by CMC and Imation (if Imation makes anything anymore,  LOL)
The way to tell is look where it is made.  Verbatim made in Singapore is excellent, Japan, excellent,   India: MBI and Taiwan:  CMC and Ritek .
There was a time when TDK was made in the United States down in Georgia.
Taiyo Yuden is still made by Taiyo Yuden for now.     Stamper codes are not a good indicator of who made them, especially DVD
That is who made the stamper and not who produced the media.  If I'm OEM  I would be using a TDK stamper, or for that matter a Verbatim one, not MBI, Ritek or CMC unless it was their own brand

  • DVD will not burn in Studio Pro 2

I am somewhat confused. I have burned DVD's for several years without a problem, but now when trying to burn a dvd it does Muxing track, then when it goes into "Recording", it doesn't. It just tells me the Media had found a Power Calibration error. I have tried reloading the software, but it still does it.
    Can anyone help?

That message is nothing to do with DVD SP.
Try a different burner or disc brand.

  • Can Apple supply replacement DVD drives (IDE) for 2008 Mac Pros?

I have tried to find replacements for two faulty internal Superdrives on-line, with no luck.
Today I went into my local Apple Store and was advised to call with my serial number.
After calling & waiting I was told I needed to be put through to the technical department.
That turned out to be the Applcare line.
My Applecare expired a while ago & the office was closed anyway.
I haven't been able to find out directly from Apple if they can still supply replacement drives, does anyone here know (anyone actually got some)?
Please help me clear the junk of my desk and rid me of tatty plastic Samsung drives....

yeah, I think you nailed it there. technically Apple does still provide service for the 2008 Mac pro's but you'd have to take it in and wait.  Your mileage may vary-As you (and I) have found out, it'd be cheaper and easier just to go out, buy a new drive, and install the darn thing yourself. Besides, Optiarc (the original drive makers) aren't in business anymore, and....yeah....you'll probably find E sata  DVD drives 97% of the time, so probably go with that. I bought from MCE tech... an Atapi Blu Ray drive, which I had to buy because my superdrive bit the dust,  and a new DVD burner would have cost at least 50, so, I figured why not. In a pinch, you can use an ATAPI/IDE dvd burner from a PC  with no problem. Just plug 'er right in, and make sure the jumper is set to 'cable select' .. as for Pioneer, I know that OWC has the Pioneer blu-ray drive, but I haven't been able to find any plain Pioneer DVD burners, at least not around here.
So, i guess in answer to your question: technically, yes, but you'd have to bring in your mac pro and pay their prices.

  • Recommend A Hard Drive For My Mac Pro ...

    Hi,
I am trying to troubleshoot some problems I am having with running FCP on my Mac Pro and it seems that I need a dedicated hard drive. Can anyone recommend one?
Is 500GB enough or am I just going to regret not having gone straight for the 1TB a year later?
    Thanks in advance.

I'd buy from newegg.com. They're not the cheaper online seller, but they're reliable and they make RMAs simple and easy.
Also, you'll know what make and model you're getting before it arrives on your front porch.
The installation of a hard drive or three in your MacPro is extremely simple and easy. Pull the drive carrier out, screw in the four semi-captive screws that are contained in the carrier into the bottom of the drive and push the carrier/drive back into the slot. Close up, boot up, and go to Disk Utility to format the drive as Mac OS Extended. You can do that from either the Erase or Partition tab, but the Erase tab is a little more simple.

  • How can I obtain reinstallation media for my Macbook Pro?

I recently got a 2008 Macbook Pro with no installation media and the previous owner put Linux on it.  Will Apple send me new media?  I can't seem to find a link to contact them about this.  I guess I could just go to my local Apple store, but if I can do it all online, that would be great.

  • Compatible blank DVD-R9 Disc for DVD Brenner on HP DV7-3190EG

i just bought this jumbo, quite satisfying but those new Intel icore processors getting warm a little bit too faster. but my real problem is compatible DVD-R9 blank disc to burn lage amount of data. i've tried a bunch of them without success.
do you guys have exprerienced such problems when burning???
i'll be really happy if i could finally burn from my Laptop, not always from my old Desktop PC.

UPDATE: After hours of searching and reviewing this problem, it appears it may be due to third party burning programs, however this poses another problem. My laptop came with Roxi EMC 8 which i removed some time ago, it appears using other third party burning software causes comfilcts which may be causing my problem. I contacted Roxio but they have taken the "we are not able to help" stance due to the software being an OEM and came with teh laptop and they say I need to contact HP, which i obviously have with no success so far. Due to me removing Roxio and not having a disc to reinstall Roxio to see if this corrects the problem (and at this point i would just use the Roxio software reluctantly just so i can have my laptop back) I am stuck and it appears no one knows anything on how to fix it, Roxio will not help but I am hoping HP will since according to Roxio, this needs to be supported through HP. HP, can you please help me, i cannot use my CD/DVD drive most of the time and it appears you are my only hope. Here is what i got from the Roxio website about how it needs to be handled by the manufacturer, in this case HP: "If you have an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of Roxio software, please note that it is supported by the vendor that bundled or installed the Roxio product with their hardware or software. For more information about OEM support policies, please read the article What is OEM software? " Please help HP, you have to have an answer to this, is there a place I can download the Roxio software that came with my laptop or is there a Roxio Uninstaller that would completely remove the program as there are bits still threre, my laptop is a HP DV7-1245dx. please help.........

  • Can anyone recommend a good paperback for beginners Logic Pro 9?

    Hi guys,
This question has probably been asked countless times, however...
Just purchased Logic Pro 9 and wouldn't mind getting a paperback tect book that will take me through the ins and outs.
I've jumped on Amazon and had a look but thought Id get a recommendation from the community before purchasing.
My interests are in electronic music production if that helps.
    Cheers!!

I never looked into the user manual (sorry for not being very helpful) but if you dont use it you wont learn it. Your best bet is to find what type of music your looking to create... and then search on youtube. That is how i learnt and i am now a whiz. http://www.youtube.com/user/SFLogicNinja - this guy has videos for every plug in and every synth and even more which is really helpful and it is also free.

  • Lost media for Final cut Pro X

I finished a project on final Cut Pro X and started on a new one downloading new footage.  I ran out of Disk space so I started to delete events from my iphoto library. (All is backed up)  I also deleted events and files that where being used in my previous project.  When I go to open the project they have obviously dissapeared and I am confronted with 2 different looking boxes.  One, with the usual 'Missing File' (Mainly photo's I think) with the red background icon, but also a lot of video which is replaced with a blue box with the linear look of a video and audio segment.  As I say I have all the footage backed up and have re uploaded back into iphoto.  I dont know how to make the program reconnect with the files I have reinstalled.

    Hi MC Hilton,
I found the following information that may be helpful in relinking lost media to a Final Cut Pro X project:
