Recommended imaging/cloning method for Windows 8.1 system

Can anyone recommend a reliable way to completely image/clone a windows 8.1 based system?
I've tried 3 different methods with mixed success:
1. My old faithful method uses EzGIG-III, but the BIOS setting for boot configuration needs to be changed to CMS because the tool is DOS based. The cloning operation takes forever (~12 hours for my machine with a 750GB HDD that only uses 200GB). I've tried it twice. The first time I got a boot error when booting the clone, but Windows managed to automatically repair the boot issue. The second time I had no errors at all.
2. I've tried the free version of Macrium Refect three times. First time was from a bootable USB version and I don't recall any issue. Second time was from within Windows. When I swapped the drive and tried to boot the clone, the boot failed and I got a nasty error message about winload.efi missing. I did some Googling and found a command line procedure to rebuild the missing file, which seemed to work. Third time was also within Windows and everything worked ok (I'm using the resulting clone right now as a matter of fact). Nice thing is the cloning operation only took 2 1/2 hours (compared to 12 hours with EzGIG). Also, I had trouble cloning in the opposite direction - just couldn't get it to work.
3. Third method is the System Image utility that's built into Windows 7/8/8.1. It failed right away claiming the destination location had insufficient space for the image even though the capacity was much greater than the source. I'm working through this right now and am hopeful to get it working. The down side of this method is that two separate operations are needed; one to create the image and a second one to restore it. Also, I wonder if the image will include non-windows partitions (as in Linux dual boot).
I'd appreciate any positive stories about successful cloning / imaging.

I've had mixed results with cloning. But restoring from an image always works. If you want reliability, do it that way.

1. That problem occurs because the perverse backup program wants to write to each partition on the drive being imaged. See this thread for the fix.
   Cant backup 8.1 using system image backup! Error 0x80780119
2. As I said, I've found imaging to be more reliable than cloning. How often would you restore? We image all our computers daily (3am) and retain images for ten days.
3. The image includes all the partitions on the disk - at least mine does.
In case you want to use the built-in imaging program, I can give you a shortcut to it in Windows 8.1.

  • CS3 for Windows on Mac System

    I´ve bougth CS3 for windows and I have been using it.
    I´m thinking about to get a MAC... can I use my dvds to install????

    You can install Boot Camp, Fusion or Parallels and install Windows under
    either of those three systems. Then you can install CS3 for Windows.
    With Parallels and Fusion, you can run Windows CS3 and have your Mac OS
    running in tandem. You can copy and paste between the Mac and PC sides.
    In fact Windows CS3 will run better on the Mac than running the Mac
    version of CS3 under Leopard. There are far fewer problems. The speed is
    very good while running under Parallels or Fusion. The speed under Boot
    Camp is as good as running it under any comparable PC.

  • Corrupted regsutry recovery problems for Windows XP on system restore

    Hi. Had a spyware (Trojan) killed by the virus cleaner but upon restart it gave me a famous lsass.exe error about an application, which could not be terminated. Went on and read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 but when tried to start recovery from Windows XP CD-ROM,  the command "copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system" did not work. Eventually was able to load the system from the CD-ROM but then could not pass part 2 (safe mode after rebooting) as the administrator password has been changed. I have run  NT Password and Registry Bootdisk from USB to remove the administrator password but when tried go back to recovery console from Windows XP CD-ROM, the computer powers off right before I select "R"-option to start the recovery console. When I do not use the CD-ROM and try to power on in a safe mode, it gives BSOD. How do I get to corrupted registry if I cant get to recovery console and system restore?
    Any help is appreciated. I have run a system diagnostics and start-up test has passed but on hard disk test I get to 10% of comprehensive only and then it seems to take indefinite.

    How to do a Manual SYSTEM RESTORE in XP, this should fix the missing or corrupt config file.
    A. Connect your non-bootable hard drive to another computer, as a secondary drive or use a usb adapter or enclosure, If you can see your data on the drive, back it up Now, then follow the rest of these instructions.
    B. Open Windows Explorer. Click on Tools|Folder Options|View. Check the box beside "Show hidden files and folders". Apply your change.
    NOTE
    D: may not represent the hard drive you connected to your PC, it may be E: or F: or G:, it all depends on how many other drives (including cd/dvd) you have in your host PC, So substitute the appropriate drive letter in the instructions below.
    C. Navigate to the D:\System Volume Information folder. You will see a folder named something like _restore{.........} the dots represent an alpha-numeric sequence.
    In this folder you will see folders named RP0....RPnn. Find the one with the highest number.
    These are your System Restore points. In the highest numbered folder you will see a folder named snapshot. In this folder are registry hive files which you need to recover your system:
    _registry_user_.default
    _registry_machine_security
     _registry_machine_software
    _registry_machine_system
    _registry_machine_sam
    D. Create a subdirectory; i.e, D:\Windows\TMP. Copy these files to the TMP subdirectory. Rename them to:
    default
    security
    software
    system
    sam
    Note Be sure to lose the period (.) in the file named _registry_user_.default
    E. Delete the files in the D:\windows\system32\config subdirectory with the same short names.
    F. Copy the D:\windows\tmp files to the D:\windows\system32\config. subdirectory.
    G.Put your drive back in its original system. Your system should start normally. If you get the same error repeat the procedure and choose another folder ( RPnn) (next highest number).
    You can repeat this procedure choosing lower RPnn numbers until you get it booting again.
    If you are denied access to any folders you will have to take "Ownership" of the folders first. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
    If this procedure fails to work you need to repair or reinstall Windows.

  • How to get the CanGoBack property and GoBack() method for windows 8 store app

    Hi Everybody,
            I m working windows 8 store app with webview. Here I have two buttons for go back and go forward. But i didn't have default  property for goback and goforward. How can i achieve this?

    Thanks Rob Caplan
    Actually I want solution for XAML.
    I achieve this by using list and maintaining the the current item position of current URL.
    See the Sample code:
    In webview loadingcomplete event track the url navigations
    private int _bacListPositionElevate = -1;
    webView.LoadCompleted += (object s, NavigationEventArgs e) =>
    _currentUri = e.Uri;
    if (_currentUri != null)
    if (_currentUri != elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate])
    elevateNavigationStack.Add(_currentUri);
    _bacListPositionElevate++;
    Now in the back button decrease the position like this:
    _bacListPositionElevate--;
    webView.Navigate(elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate]);
    BackButton.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate != 0);
    FrwdButton.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate < elevateNavigationStack.Count - 1);
    Now in the forward button increase the position like this:
    _bacListPositionElevate++;
    wvElevate.Navigate(elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate]);
    imgElevateBack.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate != 0);
    imgElevateFwrd.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate < elevateNavigationStack.Count - 1);

  • Which DVD to iPod Method (for windows) has the highest quality?

    Hi everyone! This is the first thread I have started! *pats himself on back*...
    ...O.K. down to buisness...
    Does anyone know or tested which dvd to ipod conversion method is best? I have looked at most of the threads here about the conversion methods, and I was wondering which had the highest quality picture, quickest conversion time, and taks up the least memory. Feel free to post your opinions, but I feel tested responces are more helpful. Thx for your time...

    'dvd decrypter' is phenominal. all it essentially does is takes the '.vob. file off the dvd. it takes up alot of space, but the quality is perfect. somewhere on videora.com there is a link... its free too. as for a converter, ive tryed most of them, and totally preferred videora, onyl because it converts any type of file.

  • What is the recommended image resolution (dpi) for best result in a A0 (plotter) printing?

    Is the 300 dpi resolution good enough (images>24bit>1680X1050 pixels) for best printing result in A0 (plotter)?

    It sounds almost a trick question.  'How can I use a pen plotter with bit map images?' sort of thing.  Plotters are designed for vector artwork, and more suitable for use with Autocad than Photoshop.  However there are apparently workarounds, but the question might be more like 'how to convert bit map image for pen plotter?' rather than what resolution you need.
    Is there a particular end use for this graphic that requires a plotter?  Like laser etch, wood cutter etc. or is it just that the pen plotter can manage A0?

  • Tutorial For Windows Application Help System RoboHelp 8

    Hi,
    I'm using Robohelp 8 and I've created several web based help projects.
    I now need to create a help system that will be part of a Windows application. A local help that will install with the app.
    Are there any tutorials on how to do this?
    Thanks

    Hi and welcome to the forums!
    I wrote an article for Adobe's Developer Network which you may find helpful on how to implement context sensitive help with a web application using the WebHelp API. It was written for an older version of RoboHelp, but the concepts are virtually the same.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet-archive/robohelp/articles/context_help.html
    In additional you will find more information regarding application help from these two resources. Some of what you need will depend on the language and platform of the application (.NET, C++, C#, PHP, Java, etc.) These are covered in the documentation:
    This is the online help topic for context sensitive help on Adobe's website.

    In addition, if your developers are using C++ language to develop their applications, you may find a new automatic feature in Adobe RoboHelp 9 to be useful.

  • To install Windows 8 OS on a new iMac using Boot Camp, what size "partition" should I allocate for Windows on a system with 3TB Fusion drive?

    I am trying to install Windows on a new iMac w/3TB Fusion drive. The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing???  So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively?  Is "more" better??? or just over-kill?  And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work?  Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
    I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.
    Regards....?
    P.S.  I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz.  When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead.  Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule???  I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.

    It depends on your uses. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321 Windows 8 works properly in Boot Camp, always that your iMac is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US You can only use the 64-bit Windows 8 edition.
    Respecting to your processor, you may want to contact with Apple, as they may have sent you the iMac with a wrong processor
