Recommended memory for Aperture?

I will soon be ordering a new iMac and was wondering what memory people recommend for Aperture?
Thanks!

Hi John,
I finally have everything setup and a card full of images to test with. I'm pretty new to Aperture so I'm not really sure what tests would be ideal, but here's what I've done.
My SD card had 1774 (raw + jpeg) images, and I popped the SD card into the internal iMac SD slot. I created a new Aperture library for the purposes of testing, first on the iMac and then on the MBA's hard disk attached in target disk mode. In both cases it took only a few seconds, but it seemed to take a little longer on the MBA's drive and I saw a spinning beach ball momentarily.
Then I imported images as managed files into the new library. In each case I had restarted the iMac and had nothing other than Aperture running. I opened the Activity window and timed it from clicking the Import button. I checked the time when it had completed the "copying files" task and again when the "processing" task finished.
iMac internal disk: Copying files finished @ 21 min, 24 sec; Processing @ 31 min, 38 sec
MBA target disk: Copying files finished @ 23 min, 09 sec; Processing @ 33 min, 11 sec
For my own interest, I put the SD card into a USB card reader and attached it to the MBA directly, opened aperture and imported them to my existing library (referenced).
Copying files finished @ 22 min, 7 sec; Processing @ 25 min, 13 sec
So I have no idea what the "processing" step is doing but its interesting that it's faster on the MBA! I even ran that test twice to confirm.. Anyways for the MBA target disk scenario, it would seem that there's a small delay introduced by the MBA target drive.
I also had bookmarked this thread about testing Aperture performance:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/13386837#13386837
So, using 100 raw files from my D7000, results are as follows:
Auto Enhance All:
iMac internal disk = 2 min, 1 sec
MBA target drive = 2 min, 7 secs
     MBA = 8 min, 27 secs
Generate New Previews:
iMac internal disk = 1 min, 16 secs
MBA target drive = 1 min, 15 secs
     MBA = 7 min, 48 secs
Export Full Size JPEGs:
iMac internal disk = 3 min, 17 secs
MBA target drive = 3 min, 17 secs
     MBA = 6 min, 48 secs
So overall I think the delay introduced by the MBA in target disk mode seems insignificant compared to the improvement in image processing time. Since I'd like to keep the option to use my Aperture library remotely on the MBA I think it's a good option!
If you can think of any other useful tests let me know, I'd be happy to run them.
And I set up a clone of the MBA drive using CCC, copied ~130GB in around 50 mins. Nice!

  • Recommends memory for Equium M50-164 does not fit

I have the Equium M50-164 in its original configuration.
I wanted to add more memory so, on the recommendation of the Toshiba Product Support page, I purchased the Toshiba PA3411S-2M1G memory module (from eBuyer).
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/individualOptions.do?service=UK&OPTION_ID=118626&t oshibaShop=true&selCategory=4700
On attempting to fit the memory module into my machine, I found that it does not fit! The plastic 'divider' between the two contacts in the laptop does not match the position of the notch between the two sets of pins on the memory module.
    Tosh recommends Part Number: PA3411S-2M1G 1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4300 DDR2 (533MHz)
The memory that arrived has PA3411S-2M1G 1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4200 DDR2 (533MHz) on the box.
Someone in the forums says PC2700 PA3313U-2M1G is the part number.
The manual that came with the M50 states that PC2700 memory is required.
Does anyone know the correct part number, or a suitable alternative by a different manufacturer?
I'm quite annoyed, as the support helpline suggested I phone their Sales department! So they can sell me more incorrect memory modules?!? Now looking forward to the running the returns gauntlet with eBuyer...
    Cheers,
    Andy

    Hi there,
I believe its annoying since they told you the wrong information. I wish you good luck for returning the memory module, maybe you can also try to sell it to another ebayer.
Regarding your memory: I agree with Ghost UK, you have to use DDR1 memory and not DDR2.
Dont forget to assign some reward points to GhostUK, I think he would appreciate it. ;)
    Cheers guys

  • Recommended CoreDuo2 for Aperture 3

I read just in the spects, that Aperture 3 runs on any IntelMac, but they recommend a CoreDuo2 processor. Does that mean, it will run so lala on my MacPro?

Core Solos are a different matter -- They are single core processors (though they too are 32-bit processors). The only machine ever shipped from Apple with a Core Solo processor is the first Intel Mac Mini, and that was the lowest-cost option (the higher-end model had a Core Duo).
The differentiation here is between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo (thank Intel branding for that). The former are 32-bit (and ONLY in the January 2006 MacBook Pros), the latter are 64-bit.

  • What's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in UI) for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit OS?

    Hi gurus
In resource based throttling, what's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in the resource based throttling tab of the UI) for a 64-bit host
    on a 64-bit Windows OS?
    According to MS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee308808(v=bts.10).aspx):
    "By default, the
Process memory usage throttling threshold is set to 25. If this value is exceeded and the BizTalk process memory usage is more than 300 MB, a throttling condition may occur. On a 32-bit
server, you can increase the Process memory usage value to 50. On a 64-bit server, you can increase this value to 100. This allows for more memory consumption by the BizTalk process before throttling
    occurs."
Does this mean that 100 is the recommended setting for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit Windows?
    Thanks
    Michael Brandt Lassen

    Hi Michael,
Recommended setting is the default setting which is 25 .dot.
If your situation is abnormal and you see message delivery throttling state to “4” when the following performance counters are high or if you expect any of you integration
process could have impact on following counters, then you can consider the suggestion by Microsoft. Don’t change the default setting.
    High process memory
    Process memory usage (MB)
    Process memory usage threshold (MB)
You can see these counters under “BizTalk:MessageAgent”
You can gauge these performance counter and its maximum values if have done any regression/performance testing in your test servers. If you have seen these counters having
high values and causing throttling, then you can update the Process memory usage.
Or unexpectedly you’re process high throughput messages in production which is causing these counters to go high and cause throttling, then up can update the Process memory
    usage.
The above two cases where I know my expected process usage (by doing performance testing) or suddenly my production server processing has gone high due to unexpected business
hike (or any reasons) which caused throttling, then do changes to default throttling setting.
Just changing the default setting without actual reason could have adverse effect where you end up allocating
more processing capacities but the actual message processing message usage ever is low means you end up investing in underutilised resources.

  • Nvidia 8800 GT not the best for Aperture use?

I've been reading from barefeats ( http://barefeats.com/harper10.html ) that the 8800 GT is not the best graphics card for Aperture. Actually I don't think they actually tested Aperture, but Motion 3. The Nvidia is a more expensive option than the ATIs, yet it would be worse for Aperture? Has someone specifically benchmarked Aperture 2 (not another pro app, and no synthetic tests of core image) with the 8800 GT against the other cards? Would Apple update Aperture to make it take better advantage of the 8800 GT's strengths (when available in a system)? I hope so. I already got the Nvidia, and am waiting to get a Mac Pro in the summer.

Here's my prelim findings (as posted in another thread). Will come back with more detailed comments after I have a chance to test some more:

I've just put one in my first gen mac pro, too. I can confirm a great deal of improvement over the stock 7300 gt. My prob was when an image had been straightened, cropped etc if I then attempted edge sharpening it was just awful - beachballs in abundance, crappy panning, slower than Capture NX. Now, though, it is fast and pleasant to use. That's the good news. The bad news is either:
    1. Apple put such a puny graphics card in a Mac Pro (sic) in the first place (although it copes with everything except its own Pro photo software)
    2. Apple wrote such idiosyncratic software (leaning on the on-graphics card memory so much) that meant Mac Pro (sic) machines hardly more than a year old couldn't cope without a new graphics card when running Apple's own pro photo software. That and the 7300 is still on the "recommended" list of cards for running Aperture 2.
    Ho and, indeed, hum.
    Cheers

  • Processor speed and RAM for Aperture? Comparing MacBook Pros.

I'm about to purchase a macbook pro and thought it best to ask people who are actually using aperture and other image editing software this question. I need to know if a boost in processor speed and video card from the 2.16 to the 2.33 MBP is noticable enough to make a difference. I'm just getting into RAW editing and my iBook can't handle aperture because of the video card, and I don't want to have any problems in the future. Is the price worth the difference?
I've tried posting in other places and have had little response, so I would appreciate it a lot considering I need to purchase today or tomorrow!

All in all, I'd recommend the 2.33 for Aperture. You'll likely keep this laptop for a 2-3 years, so what do the extra dollars give you?
The modest speed bump between 2.16 and 2.33 is OK ... Aperture will use it, esp. since there are 2 x procs. It's really 2 x 10% uplifts, theoretical. You will feel around a 5-10% improvement I suspect.
The bigger reason is the video card VRAM .... 256Mb v 128Mb. VRAM WILL BE USED BY APERTURE and cannot be upgraded later. You soon notice when your RAW's or scanned images are paged from VRAM to main memory and back. Aperture moves the image into VRAM for processing image data using the GPU. More is a good, good thing..... esp. if you ever hang a 2nd monitor off your laptop (which is very common practice).
The additional 1Gb RAM is also needed. Aperture runs like a dog with 8Mpixel plus RAW's on 1Gb RAM and really starts to cruise on 2Gb.
So, you'd need the extra Gb RAM anyway, $175 add-on. That leaves a net of $325, or less than $10/month over the life of your laptop.
All in all then, I'd recommend the 2.33 v 2.16 for Aperture.

  • How do I get more memory for my Macbook Pro Spring 2010 13-inch with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?

How do I get more memory for my Macbook Pro spring 2010 13-inch with 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Apple says no memory currently available for that model. I have 4 GB memory and 3.99 used. Help!

    $45.99
Also what do you mean that actual memory is 16GB but with Apple it's 8?
When I go to the "About this Mac" it says Memory 4G 1067 MHz DDR3, then when I go to System Report it says
     Memory Slot
    Bank 0/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
    Bank 1/ DIMM0 2G DDR3 1067 MHZ OK
Sorry I'm clueless. Just don't want to buy something that messes up my machine more than it already is.
The Crucial site appears to have recommended the correct spec 4gB RAM stick for your model. Please note that you will need to remove the existing sticks of RAM to install new, so you will need 2x4gB to get to 8gB.
When your model of computer was designed/built, it was tested with readily available 2x4gB (8gB). After release RAM retailers have tested it with higher amounts, and Apple didn't update their quoted specs.

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

Where can i buy original memory for my macbook pro 13inc mid 2012 and how much is this ?

"Memory sold by the Apple Online Store is guaranteed to be compatible with your Macintosh."
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/memory
Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. You'd be paying Apple a lot more than either one of them, and you don't have to.
