Recommended online (offsite) backup service for Leopard?

I have searched the Apple Discussions and have only seen mention of Mozy. Does anyone know of any other good online backups? I have an external HD backup but want an OFFsite backup as well.
Thanks!

Thanks, but...for instance:
I just signed up for a trial version of dot mac. I have done a sync with my idisk to backup contacts, mail accounts, etc, but don't see anything on my idisk.
This doesn't make paying for dot mac sound that good to me. if i am using it as an offsite backup solution i do need access to my data and if i can't see it that is not good!
I assume these problems are because I am not using the application correctly. Any help appreciated...

  • Re: Online Backup Services for Mac?

pc users have online backup services such as carbonite to choose from. Is there an equivalent backup service for Macs?
My pc friend says he pays $50/year for his online service which makes more sense than having an external drive next to your computer. Good when your hard drive craps out, yes, but not so good if both get damaged due to fire, water, etc. or disappear due to theft.

There are a few, but I have only been experimenting with .Mac so far (which mostly for the other features). You can do a search for : online backup for mac : and several show up. I have heard good things from others about Mozy. Note the file transfer for any online service will be limited by your network bandwidth and availability.

  • Azure backup services for Object Storage

I'm investigating using your Object Storage services for our on-premise application. I see there are replication options for this service but I assume all the replicas are near real-time. I want to be protected from something horrible like an application
defect corrupting or deleting our BLOBs.    The Azure backup service seems to be for backing up on-premise data to the cloud. The Object Storage BLOBs I want to back up will already be in the cloud. Even if I can use Azure
Backup for this, I'd like not to manage it myself. Is there a backup service I can use with the Object Storage service that allows me to have backups but not have to deal with managing/monitoring them?   If so, where can I get pricing information?

Azure backup supports files and folders backup to Azure. if there are Windows VMs or machines using Object Storage services, then install Azure backup agent in the Windows machines to backup the relevant files and folders.

  • Recommended list of image services for image longevity?

I am a fan of screenshot threads but I get sad when I see image links to ompldr or dropbox which are inevitably broken.
Presumably Arch servers cannot handle the image bandwidth so we must depend on third party services.
Perhaps we should compile a list of recommended services to upload to and also actively discourage services like Dropbox, whose links seem to be dead (because user delete/moved the source?).
Imgur looks like it will survive for a while but I hate their interface to view full resolution images, so I probably wouldn't recommend them.
    What do you guys recommend?

When I upload pictures to imgur, I just make the link point to the image itself.
It's easy to do. Just add "i." before "imgur.com" and add the original filename extension (such as ".png") to the end.

  • Help needed for choosing Cisco recommended VM Backup solution for UCCE & CUCM 8.5

    Hi
We are planning to install a reliable backup solution for our UCCE platform ( ESX(i) 4.x & 5.x  )
if someone can share the details of Cisco recommended VM ware backup solution for UCCE 8.5 , it would be really helpful .
    Regards
    Renni John

    Hello,
    -    Snapshot procedure of VMs is not supported by Cisco for UCCE servers.  Please refer table "VMware Feature Support for Contact Center 8.0(2) through 10.x" on below link:
    o    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_VMware_Requirements#Supported_Editions_and_Features_of_VMware_vSphere_ESXi.2C_VMware_vCenter_and_VMware_vSphere_Client
    -    Same above link refers to use "Copy" feature of VM to take backup of servers, but it is a very lengthy procedure which requires extensive command line knowledge of UCS.  Moreover VM should be shut down for this procedure.   This can be used as one time backup of server; but cant be used as scheduled back up method.

    Hi,
Could you try the following command ? Seems like some dependent Windows DLL is not being loaded..
    sbttest foo -libname <abs-path-of-directory>\oraopc12.dll
This will output the reason why oraopc12.dll can't be loaded.

  • Encrypted Offsite Backup Solution

I've been thinking about how to implement an encrypted offsite backup solution for data. I've come up with a solution but I'm wondering if anyone has any comments or other ideas I might consider.
The solution I came up with is as follows:
Use AES to encrypt the data. This means keeping hold of a secret key. It would seem to be inappropriate to just store the secret key on the remote system, as that would be insecure. Likewise, it is inappropriate to store the secret key on the local system, because if you really need your offsite backup, that means your local system is toast. This lead to the idea of using a password-based key (PBKDF), as the only place left to store the key would seem to be in the user's head. This seems okay, but what if the user wants to change their password? This would seem to put an undue hardship on the remote system, as the entire backup would need to be re-encrypted every time a password is changed. This in turn lead to the idea of using a generated secret key that is used to encrypt the data, then use a password-based key to encrypt the generated key, then store the encrypted generated key on the remote system. Therefore, if the user changes the password, the system need only replace the encrypted key on the remote system.
Anyone have any thoughts on this solution? Does it seem reasonable?

    Skotty wrote:
Anyone have any thoughts on this solution? Does it seem reasonable?Be careful, encryption is not a panacea; in this case it may be more like a pandora's box. My first suggestion is to avoid encryption and place the security burden contractually on your backup provider. If you must encrypt, bear in mind that the crypto is another potential point of failure. Passwords get forgotten, HSMs can and do fail, and for some encryption modes a single bit error will render everything encrypted after it unreadable. By encrypting the backup, you have now coupled two hard problems, crypto engineering and backup engineering.

  • Offsite Backup Server

I have got a client who wants to set up an offsite backup server for SAP B1. I would to know how to do it. May you please help.

    Hello,
Accordingly to [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152531(SQL.90).aspx|http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152531(SQL.90).aspx] there are 3 possible scenarios in order to implement Replication using MSSQL Server:
    1. Transactional Replication
    2. Merge Replication and
    3. Snapshot Replication
I am afraid that I have to say that nothing of the above is supported as described in note [942923|https://websmp230.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMSZ3PTU4ODAwMDAr)/bc/bsp/spn/smb_searchnotes/smb_index.htm]
I think it has to do with the internal links SAP Business One uses within a DB, which might get destroyed when using replication functionality of MSSQL Server.
    Kind regards

  • Informal poll: breaking raid as offsite backup

this isn't specific to os x server, but i was wondering what other people think about breaking a mirrored raid (external or internal hot swap) and swapping in a spare as a means of providing easy offsite backup.
thanks for any feedback. i'll post my thoughts in a bit but am looking for others' take on this.

The following discussion has a lot of good information you may want to read:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6266460
I've seen this method mess things up a few times, so I wouldn't rely on it. RAID1 was intended for redundancy in case of drive failures, not for backups. There are several things that can go wrong when you break the mirror, especially if the system is live.

  • What's a good offsite backup?

What is a good on-line backup service for 2+ TB?

I would use physical backups using this information (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3107) and keep a thrid copy that you keep at a friend's house and rotate through.  2 TB downloads are slow enough for smple files, and I do not like relying on ethernet for my perosnal files anyway.

  • Do i need to open port for crash plan online backup service

do i need to open port for crash plan online backup service?

Possibly. I would start by checking out this CrashPlan support article. CrashPlan does require certain ports on both your computer's and network router's firewall to be open in order to communicate properly.

  • Bypassing proxy for online backup service

BM 3.8.5 w/patch 1; NW 6.5.8. I'm trying to evaluate an online backup service that doesn't support proxy servers, bizarre as that may be. Is there a way to let a program on a workstation bypass the proxy server? Also, though not germane to this forum, if anyone has any suggestions for online back that are compatible with NW and BM for a small office (under 10 computers), please chime in.

bm proxy is normally only for port 80/443, when using the forward proxy.
If this program access port 4282 and 4280/4285, then it depends how you
internet connection is set up. If bm is the default gateway for the
internal hosts and filters are applied, then you will need a filter
exception for this ports and enable dynamic nat to allow this traffic to
reach the internet. So bm proxy is not involved here.
If bm is not the default gateway, then this program will use the default
gateway defined on the PC to reach the internet and then is there where
you have to allow this traffic.

  • Which Mac Mini Configuration Recommended for Leopard??

I'm about to purchase a new Mini to replace my (beautiful!) G4 Cubes, and would appreciate any comments/recommendations on which configuration to order. I'm planning to get the upgraded 2GB of memory (more is always better!, and my guess would be that the 2.0 GHz processor with a 120 GB HD + SuperDrive should be a nice ticket - or would you recommend a bigger HD? (I don't do intensive graphics or any gaming, but I want to be able to run OS X and MS Windows simultaneously (with Parallels?).
Also... I currently have 2 G4 Cubes networked to run on a single DSL service using a FriendlyNet Ethernet Hub and 2Wire modem. Any problems simply substituting the Mac Mini for one of the Cubes in this network?
Final question, please: With Leopard plus Parallels on the new Mini, what is the minimum Microsoft package I would need to buy in order to open and work with basic Excel, PPS, and Word documents?
With your comments/recommendations, I'm ready to add my contribution to Apple's gross and net income for the current quarter!!..... Thanks!... CaptDenny

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The requirements for Leopard are sufficiently low that even an old Mac mini should run it well, let alone one of the new Core 2 Duo models. As such, the 2.0 model with 2Gb RAM should be more than adequate. Leopard's only notably heavier demand is drive space, now requiring close to 10Gb. Clearly the 120Gb drive standard in the 2.0 model would be adequate to that task, plus allow for use of Windows also. As such, a larger internal drive wouldn't really be recommended, though you may wish to consider adding a good sized external, preferably a firewire connected drive, for extra storage and backup.
Where running Windows is concerned, Leopard comes with BootCamp, so you could use that as opposed to Parallels. The downside is that while BootCamp is free, it doesn't permit the running of MacOS and Windows side by side. At boot, you have to select one or the other. If that meets your needs, then it's a better bet in many ways, since it allows the entire system, memory and processor to be dedicated to whichever OS you need at any given time, rather than shared.
On the other hand, if you need or want to run both MacOS and Windows simultaneously, and switch between them, Parallels is the option that would allow that, though both MacOS and Windows will suffer in terms of absolute performance since RAM and CPU are shared between them.
You should have no problem substituting a new mini into your home network using the same setup as you presently have on the soon to be retired Cube.
To run Excel, PowerPoint and Word, you'll need a copy of MS Office. The current version for Mac is still 2004, which is not Intel native. The updated version to closely match MS Office 2007 for Windows will not be out for Mac until 2008. If you buy a copy of MS Office 2004 for Mac however, you'll get an upgrade to the new version when it is released. Upgrading at that point would be advised since while the current version is not Intel native, the new version due is. If you are a student or teacher, you will qualify for the Academic version at around $150, otherwise it's a little expensive $400 list price.
