Recommended order for Arch's 2012 update manual interventions

Well, sending my laptop off for repairs has forced me to use my old laptop which has been sitting around gathering dust since April 2012. As we all know, a bunch of fun stuff happened with Arch Linux just after that. I don't want to re-install and I seem to remember that, after we got through that mess, someone posted a recommended order for handling each of the changes for computers that needed to do all the updates at once. I'm having trouble finding that info. Does anyone remember the proper order or have the link to that info? The computer already has systemd installed.
By my count, I will need to handle:
udev -> systemd-tools
filesystem manual intervention
the libc debacle
fontconfig manual intervention
consolekit -> logind
the later filesystem & libc update: on its own it was simple, but compounded with the problems from summer 2012, it might be painful
Bonus level: replace GRUB with GRUB 2
The filesystem and libc ones are the main things to worry about, I think.

Go though the news and try to fix it.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162765 is a recent topic about updating an old Arch install.
Yes, I got my to-do list from the news page. The only reason for this post is that I remember someone saying that, if all of them need to be done at once, there is a recommended order to doing them. I'm trying to find that info. Otherwise, I'll just go in chronological order.

  • Recommended order for running clean-up wizard in wsus upstream / replica hierarchy

    Hi :)
    Is there anywhere documented recommended order for running clean-up wizard in wsus upstream / replica hierarchy ?
    Should I first run on Upstream and than on Replica or vice versa ?
    I've found on this blog
    http://www.madanmohan.com/2010/10/sms-wsus-synchronization-failed.html that clean-up should be run always from bottom (replica) to the top (upstream).
    Also, is there any news for WSUS 4 :) ?
    Best regards

    YES,you'd better run the WSUS Server Clean-up Wizard from the bottom of the WSUS hierarchy to the top and NEVER from the top down.
    I totally disagree! The Server Cleanup Wizard should be run on the upstream server first, to ensure that
    updates that will be deleted are no longer synchronized to the downstream server. Furthermore, if you run the SCW on the downstream server first, and it deletes updates that have had status changes on the upstream server that need to be replicated,
    this may throw a synchronization error on the downstream server. The downstream server should NEVER be intentionally put in a configuration that makes it different from the upstream server, and running the SCW on a downstream server before running it on an
    upstream server would do exactly that.

  • Is there a recommended "order" for displaying CSS shorthand attributes?

    When using shorthand (for background tags, for example) is
    there a
    "preferred" or "recommended" order of displaying the
    attributes?
    background: url(filename.jpg) no-repeat left top fixed
    background: no-repeat left fixed top url(filename.jpg)

    It's safer to assume that the order is important than to
    assume that it's

  • Tecra A10 - Installation order for XP, additional Windows updates and JRE

    Hello,
    Sorry to post a new thread but the old one " [Tecra A10 - Installation order for XP|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=45611] " being closed and my question relates to the same topic.
    I got hold of a Tecra A10 PTSB0A-002001 and I would like to install XP SP3 on it so the order in which to install Toshiba additionnal drivers is very useful. Thank you Ivan25 for that information.
    Toshiba also include a Java Runtime Environment 2 package which I was planning to replace by a JSE 7. I would like to know in which order it has to be installed?
    Furthermore, after installing XP SP3 there are still hundreds of Windows updates to apply, should those Windows updates be installed straight after XP SP3 setup or after Toshiba drivers?
    Thank you in advance for your help
    Cheers

    Hi Francesco_1,
    Thank you for you reply. I did install JRE 7 in fact because JRE 2 is a bit out-dated.
    For information, the "ALPS Pointing-device Driver" returned errors but all went fine when Iinstalled Vista 32bit driver instead of XP 32bits
    Another question, is with regards to "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager(iMSM) ". Since, we have to install SATA HDD drivers during Windows XP setup, is it necessary to run again the "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager(iMSM)" which might overwrite the SATA driver installed at the beginning of the setup?
    I agree with you that WXP might not be the best choice, but I need to run some older software that do not work yet under W7, especially under W7 64bits! I am planning on having a boot lodaer anyway, which will allow me to start MS-DOS, XP, W7 or Linux depending on the need.
    Cheers

  • Changing Sales order Status (Z-Status Profile) without manual intervention

    Hi All,
    I have a  Z-Status Profile created for Sales Order. There are about 6 statuses in this profile. An enhancement requires change of particularly two statuses only by the user exit after certain calcualtions and not manually by any user in any case.
    Can anyone suggest a way to handle this case? If authorization object should be created then based on which fields should this authorization object be created? If not, this there any other way to handle this.
    Thanks,
    Sophia Xavier

    Hi Pete,
    Thanks for your reply. The usage of the User Exit and the Function Module is quite clear. My question is how do we control the change of two statuses only by the User Exit without any manual intervention, i.e., no user should be able to change these two statuses manually,only the program should be able to do this..How do we handle this scenario?
    Thanks,
    Sophia Xavier

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux 2012-01 (32bit-64bit) Request

    Could you guys make new iso image, because looking at the arch news there is three brick walls now.
    This is time consuming when installing on many servers/desktops. Here is a few know issues from the news.
    -- Users of unofficial kernels must enable devtmpfs support
    -- filesystem upgrade - manual intervention required
    -- initscripts update - manual intervention required
    Also this would of used latest kernel 3.1.7 and other up to date packages without the need to upgrade about 500mb of files.
    Thank you for the best distro ever
    Last edited by TuxLyn (2012-01-07 02:04:00)

    Get the official dualboot net install ISO, it should work just fine.
    * The filesystem upgrade will be taken care of during the installation: it will install the latest version directly, so there's no need for an upgrade process like on an existing installation.
    * Same thing applies to the initscripts.
    * The devtmpfs issue only applies if you are building your custom kernel, and an installation ISO wouldn't change the slightest thing there - there is not a single Arch installation ISO that comes with a custom kernel. As such, it is pretty much a non-issue.
    The three 'issues' you listed aren't related to a clean install in any way. Hence there is no need for a new ISO. If there is, you can be sure the issues at hand are acknowledged (like with the switch to Linux 3.x and the subsequent renaming of kernel images and initcpio images) and a new ISO is provided.
    TuxLyn wrote:lso this would of used latest kernel 3.1.7 and other up to date packages without the need to upgrade about 500mb of files.
    Another moot point. Defaulting to the net install makes sure you don't need to pull in hundreds of megabytes needlessly. It's good practice, and it's kinder on the Arch servers or mirrors as well. There's no point in providing a new ISO just because it comes with the latest and greatest; Arch is rolling release, you're supposed to update anyway.

  • Generating sales order for semifinished product

    Hello every one. I am finding difficulty in creating a particular planning scenario. I require to sell a semi finished material which is assigned to a finished material. Finished product strategy is 50. Semi finished has strategy group with main strategy 70 and another strategy 50. While running mrp for finished material everything is running perfectly. But if i generate sales order for semi finished it is generating without errors, but requirements are not generated for the semi finished in MD04. Please provide solution.

    Hi Sayak,
    MRP can not generate sales order. It is an element which is being created manually after the customer is giving us PO. Against a sales order planned/production/Purchase order can be created.MRP will create production/procurement element. Not the sales order.
    If you want to create sales order for semi material, create it manually(Or create CIR). The availability check should be 2 for the semi. Then it should appear in MD04 screen after putting the semi material in input screen.
    Your concept is the semi should be consumed for finished product as well can be sold also.
    In that case you have to create sales order separately. If some requirement is generated (PIR etc) internally, then MRP can take care of those requirement. But not the sales order.
    If you are talking with sales BOM, that is a different concept.
    Hope I made it clear.
    Regards,
    Krishnendu.

  • Sort order for "News"

    I have the "News" Layout Set running.
    The sort order in the portal display is oldest top, newest at the bottom.
    Is there a way to change the order the other way around, without "Manual" intervention, i.e. not moving the news around by hand?

    Hi Holger
    To Roberts answer I can add that you should choose "Descending" in "Sorting Mode" (click "show advanced options" in the collection renderer to see this option).
    At the same time you should consider if "modified" as sorting-property meets your requirements. Often when working with news items, it makes more sense if you use "created". The problem with "modified" is that an edited news item will turn up as the latest news - even if you only corrected a spelling error or the like.

    hi , i have a bad english , but i hope that you will understand me
    i don't undersand why it don't have an etc-update for arch, because if you don't see regularly your .pacnew file , you can't see new stuff like for the last initscripts with the @ for the daemons or for the /etc/group.
    So yesterday i wrote a litle script (i very beginner with bash ) wich try to do like the etc-update of gentoo :
    fichiers .pacsave
    1 ) ./fam/fam.conf.pacsave

    you can find it here :
    http://home.tele2.fr/geekitus/trouver
    it certainly possible to increase the speed and to add some new options , if anyone can continue this script and to "clean"  it ... (i have separate .pacnew and .pacsave to try to inscrease the speed )
    *arf, sorry i forget to translate to english some word in the script like "fichiers -> files"
    if anyone have suggestions or idea ... say it

    Nice!
    I have several times thought making such script. I haven't check my /etc for months not wanting to take the trouble manually going through the config files. With your script I don't mind keeping my system updated.
    I will download and let you know how it works.

  • Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3042553)

    Hello,
    Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3042553) has been advised to be critical update to deal with Vulnerability in HTTP.sys which could allow remote code execution.
    However due to some reason I am unable to apply the patch to any of the Windows 2012 R2 servers. It errors - The update is not applicable to your computer, when tried to install manually / locally.
    I tried to push it via WSUS and the patch is not getting detected by the servers.
    Regional language settings are set to match Windows display language (Which is English).
    Is anyone else experiencing this issue too? If so is there way to get this deployed please.
    Thank you.
    Kumar G

    Hi Kumar,
    I suggest you check the file version of Http.sys and compare it with the one documented in the KB article below:
    MS15-034: Vulnerability in HTTP.sys could allow remote code execution: April 14, 2015

  • Documentation Project for Arch [UPDATE]

    I read this topic about the popularity about Arch and it kept me thinking for a couple of weeks.
    I'm really devoted to Arch and I'd like to start a professionally-aimed Documentation site for Arch Linux with an appropiate installation guide and other guides for installing X.Org, Servering, Desktop-stuff etc.
    My question is: how would you feel about it? Anyone who wants to collaborate? Tips? Suggestions?
    Upon your responses I will post my 'plan' with a concept lay-out and system based on your input and my thoughts within the next two weeks. I'm only able to do Dutch and English.
    :arrow: [UPDATE #2: Contents]
    Ok, I've taken notice of all your comments. Many thanks! However, I was wondering which categories "slash" manuals their should be. I was thinking about the following:
    1. Guides
    * [AInsG] Arch Installation Guide
    Covers the Arch Installation from retrieving an ISO to the bash-prompt.
    * [ADskG] Arch Desktop Guide
    Covers the installation and configuration of software desktop users mostly use like: Gnome, KDE, Cups, Codecs, Gimp. Stuff like that. Installation from Bash Prompt to X.Org with software.
    * [ASvrG] Arch Server Guide
    Covers the installation and configuration of software that servers run, like: NTP, Apache, MySQL, PostegreSQL, PHP, FTP, SSH, etc.
    * [APkgG] Arch Packaging and Maintenance Guide
    Covers the deep internals of Pacman, ABS and buildpkg. How to maintain, update, install, make packages etc. What to do if things fail, etc.
    * [AKnlG] Arch Kernel Compilation Guide
    Discusses how to compile your own kernel. I think it just should be there for user convenience.
    * [ADevG] Arch Developer Guide
    Covers the installation of software developers use.
    * [ASecG] Arch Security Guide[/i]
    Learns the user how to secure your Arch installation thoroughly.
    2. Categories
    * Guides
    Guides like I've listed above.
    * Howto's
    Maintained Howto's and a link to ArchWiki for unmaintained Howto's.
    * Advisory
    When you maintain a linux installation you come across many odds and weirds. Newcomers don't know these things cause they haven't experienced these odss and weirds yet. So we could place that here for convenience. For example: XFS works perfectly normal, but Grub may hang. Or the fact that on some systems Ati drivers are unstable. That kinda stuff.
    * Community
    References to other parts of Arch Linux, like the BBS, Wiki and Homepage and the policies for writing documentation etc.
    Conclusion
    So, this is what I come up with. What do you all think?
    :arrow: [UPDATE #1: Why no wiki & quality notices]
    I've taken notice of the first four posts and I have to make something clear. The wiki is not the way professional documention should be taken care of. I'm really thinking about a 'Documentation Project' rather than a dumpplace on the net where every moron can simply post his experiences. Just look at the wiki. Just look at it!
    What I was thinking of is to build (Me, PHP/MySQL dev) an Arch Documentation webapplication (or deploy and customize an existing system) and form a project team consisting of a couple of really devoted people, including myself, to write and maintain documentation.
    And if people have comments on the docs, they can discuss it at Arch BBS here, perhaps a new room for Arch Documentation Project?
    In my opinion the quality of documentation should be highly improved and I don't think letting everyone collaborate is a good idea. Especially not if I look at the Arch Wiki.
    :!: Oh, and one last note. I don't hate wiki or want it to disappear. I think there should be two places: one place for us all where we can freely collaborate (wiki) and one place (Arch Doc Project) where official and maintained docs are held.
    So, any thoughts upon this? Let me know please. I'll keep on track.

    The advantage of having a documentation team is that its possible to enforce high standards and strict quality control. As a result, you cover important topics that are always up to date. The documentation can cover Arch, GNOME, KDE and Other WM's installations as well as other guides relating to the ABS and managing your Arch install. This falls under the category of "Official Documentation".
    In contrast, I think its important to maintain a separate wiki where members of the community are free to contribute. A documentation team could NOT keep up with every possible guide. For documentation other than the "Official Doco"  that I've described above, I think the Wiki is appropriate. Gentoo follows a similar model with their official documentation and a separate Gentoo-Wiki (Which is completely 3rd party AFAIK). Gentoo is renowned for its excellent documentation, and through a dedicated documentation team we may be able to produce a similar, or even better result.
    This doesnt change the fact that the existing Wiki needs some cleaning up in areas. I'd also propose a "Standard" of how Wiki's should be layed out, and an example of a "Good" and "Bad" entry. In addition, you'd need a watchdog to issue quality notices where appropriate.
    I'm no programmer, so I'd love to be able to contribute to the Arch community in some form, and documentation seems ideal for me. Therefore, I'm putting forward my interest in this project. I've always heard various other people complain about the documentation on Arch, and I think it's an appropriate step.

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2014/04/03/understanding-the-adk-for-windows-8-1-update-and-configmgr-osd.aspx
    How does this update fit in the upgrade process (add step 7 and install this update on the SCCM Server) , or is it better to leave this update because windows PE5.1 is not supported yet.
    I hope someone can give me some good advice
