Recommended programme to wipe my machine?

I have treated myself to a new iMac and want to give my old one to a friend. It's a 2006 intel processor model.
Can anyone recommend a good programme to clean up the machine and take all my personal stuff off?
Thanks in advance

Hello Tracey:
I would erase and then install OS X from the software install DVD that came with your system.
Disk utility>erase also has a secure erase (takes awhile). If this is a friend of yours, the secure wipe is probably not necessary.

how do I view the photos ? I backed up with iPhoto closed as recommended but when I enter the Time Machine and click on iPhoto library it calculates there is 11gb in there so files must be present but when i click on open with iPhoto nothing happens ? any help welcome please !!??

The external hard drive must connect to your Mac using a USB or FireWire connection.
Note that the hard drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work correctly with the iPhoto Library and be backed up to the Time Capsule and with the backups of your Mac.
We are really talking about iPhoto uses here, so you should post in the iPhoto Support area for more details about this. The link is just below.

  • Is LDAP or AD as a external identity store recommended in ISE implementation for machine authentication

    Hi Experts,
I have question about External identity store integration in ISE . I had chance to go through the cisco doc for ISE configuration especially for external identity store .
there are two ways to configure external identity store.
    1) AD
    2) LDAP
Which one is actually recommended ? technically which one would be convinient to configure to set-up machine authentication. do we have any limitation in terms of functionality in either of one ?

    Hi Leo,
its not duplicate post , I have created one more post where you have linked that is for client policy enforcement . I want to understand how certificates will be pushed to client.
This post is to understand the LDAP & AD intergration with ISE .
I have requirement where client is asking to intergrate machine database using LDAP.
I am quite new for LDAP intergration that is the reason I have created this discussion.

  • Recommendations for reasonably priced Time Machine back ups on my iMac?

For example, will the SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 (64gb) USB work?  Can you recommend an alternative if not?  Some of the options for sale in the Apple store are really expensive, and overkill for the amount of info to be back up on my computer....
    Thank you!

A Time Machine backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of your computer's hard drive. I doubt a flash drive will suffice. Check out OWC for some reasonably priced external hard drives.

  • What does everyone recommend for a multi-function machine

We have a small office but need high speed printing and more importantly high speed scanning.  We currently have a xerox workcentre that have been decent but is in need of repair.  Instead of spending the money on that it is time for a new machine.  I would like to stay away from xerox as I called them to help fix current machine and the only advice they would give me over the phone was two power down the machine for 15 seconds.  Obviously this did not work and then they wanted $275 for the the 1st 15 minutes for a tech to come out, ridiculous.  Anyway, what do you guys recommend?  I am looking to spend around $2,500.

Call your local office equiptment service and sales, they can recommend the best product for your circumstances as they have exposure to many different machines and problems.

  • Wipe my machine

I need to wipe my Macbook Air, however I know by doing this I will loose my iTunes software which in turn means I have to wipe my iPhone.  How do i wipe my computer without either having to wipe my phone or if there isn't a  way to do this how do i backup my txt messages etc.
I hate the fact that when needing to wipe my computer my phone gets dragged into the process!
I'm not sure if this is in the correct section.
    Thank you for your help

can I ask what would be the process you would follow if you needed to wipe a computer but didn't want to have erase your iPhone after reinstalling the oppersting system and iTunes please.
    Thanks

  • My macbook pro is slow and gets the loading wheel often - Tried everything, been recommended to start using time machine

Hey, my macbook pro started going slow out of nowhere and gets the loading wheel often, I can't close it without the charger attached otherwise it heats up real bad. I've been told to get a hard drive and back up everything through time machine and then reinstall it but wouldn't that just carry over whatever problem I'm having. I've tried everything that I've found on here like going into disk utility and repairing anything broken, I checked my memory and all that and it was good but I deleted anything unnecessary and put all my music and movies onto an external hard drive.

If you don't already have backups, and you have any data that you want to keep, shut down the computer immediately and don't turn it on again until you have at least one external hard drive to use for backing up. Then see below.

  • What har drive is recommended to work with Time Machine smoothly?

What hard drive - other than Time Capsule - works smoothly with Time Machine? I'm looking for one that is a little less expensive that Time Capsule but will work as well with Time Machine.
    Thanks for your help.
    Vernon

Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
Most drives come formatted for Windoze, but most of them can be re-formatted on your Mac to work with it. See item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Also note item #1 there for size considerations; and items #3 and/or 4 for using with other data and/or other Macs.
If you think you ever might want to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive (some WDs aren't). Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB.
Depending on what ports you have, FireWire 800 is by far the fastest; FireWire 400 next, and USB slowest (F/W 400 and USB 2.0 are rated about the same, but since your Mac's CPU has to do more of the work with USB, actual throughput is usually less).
Many folks think USB is less reliable than FireWire. If you do get USB, be sure to connect it to a port on your Mac, not a keyboard (that's USB 1.0). Try to avoid hubs, too.
It's usually best to get a drive with it's own power supply, as taking power from your Mac can be a marginal proposition.
Take any advice for or against particular makes or models with a grain of salt: all makers (of just about anything) can have a "run" of bad components, or a relatively few early failures. Plus, by the time any really good trends are noted, the model has probably been revised or replaced anyway!

  • Recommendations for switching between two machines and one monitor

    Hi,
I have a MacMini and a MacBook Air, both with Thunderbolt Display ports but I have one monitor. I'd like to switch between the two without having to unplug and plug the monitor back in every time. Any recommendations for some sort of switch or Thunderbolt hub would be greatly appreciated.
    Best,
    Chris

This should work if the display use display port/mini displayport inputs. A mini display port connectors plugs into the Mac's Thunderbolt port for video

+"Programming in Objective-C is a concise, carefully written tutorial on the basics of Objective-C and object-oriented programming. The book makes no assumption about prior experience with object-oriented programming languages or with the C language (upon which Objective-C is based). And because of this, both novice and experienced programmers alike can use this book to quickly and effectively learn the fundamentals of Objective-C. Readers can also learn the concepts of object-oriented programming without having to first learn all of the intricacies of the underlying procedural language (C). This approach, combined with many small program examples and exercises at the end of each chapter, makes it ideally suited for either classroom use or self-study..."+
It will help you get to know about programming starting from Objective-C. It uses C programming as does/can Objective-C. Please try that for books.

  • Can I Wipe a new machine that came with Leopard and install Tiger

I like Leopard at home but at work on our network Leopard does not play well. I have a dual 3.2 Quad Core. Can I do a format and start with a fresh install of Tiger?

My question was answered. I can not wipe my machine clean and go back to Tiger until my IT department decides to embrace the fact that the graphics departments within our company use MAC's and always will. All was well with Tiger and our network or at least we had worked through all of the issues we had and then me and the guy I work with got new machines with Leopard on them. We have one guy in IT that claims to be the go to MAC guy but sometimes I wonder, seems my partner and I know more about MAC's than the IT department but our suggestions when we give them do not seem to be welcome. Thanks for the answers.

  • Time Machine Crazy

Since upgrading to 10.7.3 (combo upgrade) on my iMac Time Machine has been causing crashes or kernel panics if it happens to come on while I am using iMovie, iPhoto or Photoshop Elements. I then cannot restart even in Safe Mode and have to force a shut-off and pull the plug.
I have been trying to wipe out all traces of Time Machine and going back to SuperDuper and SmartBackUp which always served we well before.
I switched it to "off" in system preferences, removed it from the menu, reformatted the external hard drive and selected NOT to make it a time machine backup, and trashed the time machine preferences. But there has to be one more thing to do because in spite of all that time machine continues to try to start up - I get messages that it cannot find the backup drive, that the backup is delayed and then the beach ball comes back and everything crashes.
Can anyone advise what else I must do to completely wipe time machine out of the operating system?
    Thanks.

3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Again, I really appreciate all of this. However I may have done something already in brashness which I may live to regret. My son-in-law (a Microsoft employee - sorry) recommended I get "Find Any File" which allows me to find invisibles. I did a search for "timemachine" and came up with over 30 files which Spotlight had not brought up. In mad desperation I trashed all I could, except for several which would not allow me because they were "used by other programs" etc. I restarted all right but haven't had the chance to see if it is going to work or not. Haven't been at the computer long enough.
But here are the responses I received to each terminal entry. My problems all began with OS 10.7.2

  • Recommendations for Rebuilding my Mini Server

I recently upgraded my Mini to Mavericks Server, and ended up destroying the most crucial service on the machine: File Sharing. Ever since the upgrade, I’ve been plagued with permissions issues, destroyed Photoshop docs, and a complete disruption in our day-to-day workflow.
My plan is to completely wipe the machine and start from scratch. All attempts to fix the permissions and ACL’s have failed, so this is the next (hopefully) logical step. My hope is to outline my steps and see if any of you have any feedback.
Make certain Time Machine is up to date.
    Detach all external drives.
Perform clean install from Mavericks USB stick.
    Re-establish GoDaddy SSL certificate.
    Create Groups and Users
Here’s where I start to get a bit confused. My biggest concern are the files that I have stored on our Promise Pegasus thunderbolt raid drive. This drive contains all the files and folders that we are having difficulty accessing. Is there something that I should do to the drive before I perform the clean install?
Also, if I continue to use ACL’s, then do I even need to add users and groups in the File Sharing settings?
Another weird thing we’ve found: Multiple listings of _www or World Wide Web server on select files and folders. I added _www to our web files, but now they all show multiple listings when I check the permissions. What would cause that?
I appreciate any and all help in advance.

"Thanks for your advice. If I clear the ACE's on the Pegasus, will it also reset or affect the POSIX permissions? From what I've read, Adobe Photoshop disregards ACL's and looks to POSIX. I may just need to change how my team accesses Photoshop docs."
What version of Photoshop are you running?  I have not had issues with ACLs since versions 5 or before.  If you are using an older version, then you are correct, PS will ignore the ACL and rely on the POSIX group permissions.  I recommend modifying the umask on the Mac systems to ensure that users are writing all files and folders with rw on the group.  Customized umask can be implemented for the user level, protecting the OS from potential security concerns.
Another question: In Server.app, if I enable "Show System Accounts" in Users or Groups, I see that there is both a user and a group for "_www". I need to give Apache access to our web files. Should I give the '_www' user access, or should I make '_www' a member of Group "World Wide Web Server" and give that group access?
So you really should not need to explicitly define the www user for the files.  Apache will be fine as long as the POSIX everyone bit is we to read.  Standard umask should make this work fine.  For example, if you look in the default site, the files are not owned by www not the www group:
    -rw-r--r--   1 root    wheel  102749 Feb 18 17:10 Server.png
    -rw-r--r--   1 root    wheel    7782 Feb 28 07:26 favicon.ico
    -rw-r--r--   1 root    wheel     269 Feb 28 07:26 info.php
Yet they are served fine.  The piece of importance is the final r-- on the files.  POSIX is broken in to three chunks, the user, the group, and everyone else.  So above, the user root has rw-, the group wheel has r-- and everyone else has r--.  There should be no reason to explicitly define the www user unless you are attempting something I am not aware.
Last, I am aware of the SMB connection issues. However, the SMB connection is forced when I connect through the finder, even though I deselected the Share over SMB in the Server app. Forcing the AFP connection (afp://...) through the Connect to Server function is hit or miss. Some of our team can connect and others cannot. Not sure what to do about that one.
The recommended way is to use the Connect to Server dialog from the Finder.  Using the sidebar is a Bonjour connection and is also, as you stated, defaulting to SMB.  Remember, you can also customize your Shared Folder and disable SMB access to the share.  At this time, AFP is faster, more reliable, and better supporting case and extended attributes and ACLs.
For the systems that are giving you fits, make sure your DNS is correct, then check in the user's home folder for extra .GlobalPreferences.plist files.  These are not visible in the Finder so you will need to use Terminal:
    ls -la ~/Library/Preferences
If you have a bunch of .GlobalPreferences files, get rid of the extras.  This has been known to cause slow server connections.

  • If i back up my mac using Time Machine and an external hard-drive, can that same hard-drive be used on another computer and on a PC?

    Hi!
I hav just got a macbook pro and am used to using a HP pc and am a newbie! I have backed up my macbook with my elements external hardrive and was wondering if i can transfer the music i have purchased and is now on my external hard-drive back onto my other laptop purely because i use both laptops for different things and want to use my music on both. how do i do this? and do i need a particular software to do so?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated
    thanks
    alex xxx

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do it, but it's not recommended to use a Time Machine volume to store other files. In this case, you can create a second volume on the external drive, so you will be able to use it to store data and transfer it to other PCs.
As you are going to use the external drive with other PCs, you can make the volume and format it in "MS-DOS (FAT)" with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Finally, you will be able to copy files to the external drive.
If you copy files to a Time Machine disk, you may damage the Time Machine file structure, so you shouldn't do it. It may not happen, but it's better not to try that. Also, you won't be able to read the Time Machine drive in a PC

  • How many Instances can I install on one machine?

    Hi Folks,
Do you know how many oracle instances I can install on my Win OS machine.
I already have three different instances. Typically how many instances Oracle recommends to setup in one machine to ensure performance improvement?
I use Oracle 9 and oracle10g both. In fact, Oracle9 in Solaris and oracle10g on win.
    Regards,
    Amir

In general, it recommends one instance per server
in a production environment, for a variety of
    reasons (maintainability, backup/recovery, easier to
tune, better use of resources). If you have 100 productives databases, it is very probable that you won't be able to have one server per database.
Again, it depends on your number of users, processors and ram... But if you 16G ram and 16 processors, you should well be able to able to have 20 databases with not too much activity.
The number of 20 here means truely nothing. I admit. But recommending one instance per server is not ok.
Many applications require to have a separate database. It is the double administration necessary, but it is better than the troubles generated when 2 software vendors are sharing the same db.
For development, I have some systems with over 50 instances running with 16g ram and 8 cpus.
