Recommended Reading for App Development in iOS 5

Good Afternoon...
I've recently installed XCode 4.3.2 on my MacBook Pro as I am interested in learning application development for the iPhone and iPad.
The extent of my programming experience is BASIC. I've browsed the on line tutorials and the books available at the local B&N. There is plenty to choose from but before I purchase anything, I thought I'd better ask.
Can anyone recommend reading? I'm guessing that BASIC programming experience translates into no experience where this is concerned. I'd also be interested in hearing about any training courses on the subject.

Apex Listener config recommendations

Our DBA is installing Apex Listener 1.1.2.131.15.23 for the first time, and had a question regarding some setup. Right now it's just a stand alone copy. In the JDBC Settings, what are your recommendations for the following settings?
Initial Pool Size: 3
Maximum Statements: 10
Minimum Connections: 1
Inactivity Timeout: 1800 seconds
Maximum Connections: 10
Abandoned Connection Timeout: 900 seconds
If there is some recommended reading on how to determine the best way to set this up, that would be great.

it's hard to give you actual values. These settings concern, more or less, your load expectations. The numbers you need are
- average number of concurrent sessions (work load)
- maximum number of concurrent sessions (peek load)
Some settings might as well depend on your applications.
Recommended reading would be the Table A-1 of the Installation and Developers Guide, where the parameters you picked are described among other configuration parameters.
Just some thoughts on connection handling:
The APEX Listener uses a pool of connections to the database that is shared among all users. Usually it would be a waste of resources to have a dedicated connection for each application session, as there are usually times when there's no user activity, e.g. when a user is reading a report. So you want to make the pool size as small as possible without negative impact on your user experience. To achieve this, you may initialize your pool to be able to serve your average work load and allow it to grow to the expected peek. You may want to set the minimum number of connections below that value, so resource consumption is reduced in times of low charge.
The timeouts concern the reduction of the pool size due to reduced load (inactivity timeout - a connection isn't needed any more) or failures or unexpected long database reaction times (abandoned connection).
Statements caching can reduce database load and response times, but increases resource consumption of the Listener and may result in inacurate results if cached values are outdated.
If you have more practical questions on that topic, don't hesitate to ask.

Can anyone recommend a good color laser printer for under $500?

We have a small business that needs one. We’ve been using an Okidata C5300 for the last 6 years and it’s worked really well, but starting to have some issues with it, more so after Snow Leopard. I’m thinking it may be time to switch to a more modern design and driver. We need something that prints reasonably quickly, but doesn’t have to be a speed demon. Would like the cost of toner to be relatively reasonable, it’s amazing how that stuff adds up.
Would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

Based on your needs I think the OJ Pro series would work well.
It prints at about 35 PPM so 150 -200 pages a day wouldn't be much work for it at all.
The model I specified can connect via USB, Wi-Fi or Ethernet so you can easily connect to your network. It also does all of the functions over the LAN meaning print, scan, copy and fax and will do two kinds of jobs simultaneously. For example if user A is printing, user B can be scanning (or faxing or copying) at the same time.

It also does auto duplexing printing, scanning & copying.
It was designed specifically for people with needs similar to yours. There is a myth that Lasers are cheaper than Inkjet based on very old information.
BTW I don't work for HP or sell HP products I'm just a satisfied end user. I'd recommend reading the reviews, looks like customers really like it.

Displaying the PDF in the Acrobat reader?

Hi all,
Is it possible to display/Open the PDF that was generated in the SAP R/3 by using the following Function Modules from Portal BSP page?
CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF
QCE1_CONVERT
I know there is a function module for e-mail the created PDF from R/3 "SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1".
In the above process after using the FM "CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF" and "QCE1_CONVERT"
Is there any Function module that I can use for opening the PDF from the BSP page?

If you already have the PDF, then you only have to pack it into the outgoing HTTP response. This has been discussed here many times. The search function should deliver answers.

Recommendations for a simple, fast GUI LAN chat application? [Solved]

We now have 4 ArchLinux machines scattered throughout the house. (My wife is an Archer now!). I am looking for a simple fast GUI LAN chat application. I looked at "qchat" but it is a bit cumbersome and doesn't have the option of a small applet to the panel. Any recommendations appreciated...

Translating Copy in FCP: Process recommendations?

Hello all,
I need to translate some titles in Final Cut Pro. In terms of text, I'm simply duplicating the titles, placing them above one another, and disabling (hitting 'V') each one that I do not want at the time. For translated graphics (such as the mottos in logos) I haven't found a good solution.
Does anyone have any workflow recommendations for handling translated text and graphics in FCP that doesn't involve duplicating the project?

Training course recommendations in UK?

Firstly, I'm aware this probably isn't the best place to be posting about training course, but didn't rally think it fitted anywhere else.
My company have asked if I would like to go on a Web Development course. Obviously I said YES!
But now I am tasked with working out what would be the most useful things to learn and where?
I would class myself as a great graphic designer / beginner to better than average web designer. The type of things they would like my to be able to implement is online surveys, gather customer information, customer databases and so forth. Basically I would be implementing the marketing departments, well, marketing!
So I thought I should be looking at PHP & SQL? Maybe some XML? What would others say? Also I'm looking for a reliable company, any suggestions?
Ideally in the Bristol, Gloucestershire or Birmingham area, however London would be fine.

I'm the instructor for the Dreamweaver CS4 - Getting Started three-day course offered by Highlander (http://highlander.co.uk), an Adobe authorized training centre. I normally teach at Highlander's training centre in London, but also do training off base (in February, I taught a course in Leeds). The course I teach is described as "designed for those with no previous experience of webpage / application development". As a result, it starts from the basics, but gets into quite advanced territory by the end of the three days, particularly if participants already have a reasonable knowledge of web development (as many of them do).
Highlander also offers a PHP/MySQL course. Although I specialize in PHP/MySQL, the course is not taught by me. However, Highlander has discussed the possibility of me doing a more advanced Dreamweaver course that includes PHP/MySQL. Offering such a course would depend on sufficient people signing up for it. You might want to ask your company to inquire about arranging such a course, even though it's not currently listed on the training schedule (the person to contact is the Managing Director, Andy Gardiner).
In case you don't know who I am, I'm an Adobe Certified Instructor for Dreamweaver and the author of a series of books on Dreamweaver, PHP, and MySQL (http://foundationphp.com).
Of course, there are other training companies in the UK that others might be able to recommend.

How to read flashinstall.log

Hello, I cannot figure out why the fFlashPlayerPlugin_11_3_300_271 is not able to apply the silent autoupdate to version 11.4.402.265

I have not found any documentation regarding what these codes mean.
A Systinternals Procmon trace does not even show FlashPlayerUpdateService.exe generating any network traffic when it's running ( start from tasksch or manualy start of the Adobe flash update service.)
Any suggestions would be appreciated

To deploy 11.4 via the silent auto update, you'll need to setup a server internally. Please see our 11.4 admin guide (page 19) for details. In addition, I'd recommend reading this blog post.

Check read/write acces to a certain folder without throwing exceptions

Can somebody help me in finding a method for getting the read/write acces status to a certain location?
I need to have a function wich return me true when I have acces to read inside a folder for instance.

I'm not certain the code you are attempting to use could possibly do that. I tried accessing that link using http and ftp from a browser but nothing was found or returned.
It's more than likely you would have to use some sort of webrequest of ftp capability to attempt to get that information if that folder exists. And I would suppose an account would have to be logged onto or something in order to access that location as I
can not do it with a webbrowser nor am I asked to logon to access that location.
Are you certain that location exists on that website?

What camera do you recommend?

I have been shopping for a new digital camera. After reading these discussion boards I've come to realize that my Nikon 3100 has caused me some problems with storage on my iMac.
I haven't been happy with my camera in a few ways... slowness, X3 optical zoom and not very good in dark conditions. My family does a lot of sports and formal dancing (often in dark conditions.)
Since I'm not shooting to make road signs or billboards I think a 5mp would suffice. But please tell me if this isn't true, and what has worked for you or others.
I've considered a Canon S2, but am very open to suggestion.

The average point and shoot camera has a slow response, but some are better than others. I would recommend reading what Consumer Reports has to say about digital cameras. You want at least 3x optical, but more is better.
Now the slow response is not present in digital SLR cameras such as Canon's Rebel XT or D20, nor on any of the other SLR's such as Nikon D70. However, by the time you have paid for one of these cameras, you would have spent from $1,000 to $1,400 (depending on which one you buy). Any of these cameras come with a kit lens (around 28-55mm), but you can buy the body alone and add a lens of your liking. The kit lens is the cheapest for the camera, and costs around $150.00.
You can do a lot with the kit lens since you can zoom from approximately 28mm to 55mm, but you will eventually may have to buy a couple of telephoto lenses, perhaps a 70-300mm lens or a 100-400mm or so. These lenses come in two forms: Image stabilization, and none. The ones with image stabilization cost from $1,300 to perhaps $4,000, while the ones without image stabilization cost from $170.00 to $400.00.

Txt-reader (not really a database question)

I am able to use this class to read text from a file, however, the swedish characters ÅÄÖ are causing trouble in the output text. Is there any way to add support for these characters in this class?
I know very little about file management, I was simply looking for a finished class to do the job for me. since I am not capable of solving this problem by myself, I need your help!
is there a way to avoid the trouble I am having with the foreign characters, or is there a better way to display text from *.txt files? My quest is to display text in a JTextArea.

Read from insert?

Is it possible to query the database from a create statement? For instance, when the create service is called, an SQL statement is executed and those results are included in the insert. If this is possible, what is the general approach?

You can write a create procedure in XQSE that first reads and then calls another create procedure. Any procedure can be designated a create procedure, but in order to be a primary create procedure, it has to adhere to the parameter and return type convention.
Here is an example that only adds an address if none exists for that customer, you can add it in the RetailDataspace to Normalized/Customer/Address.ds:
