Recommended set weirdness

1) If you run install_cluster in the latest S10(sparc) recommended set, the
first time through it will install most of the patches. If you run it again, it
will install another one (maybe two). How odd is that?
2) The main kernal patch 118833-36 won't install because patch 119042-10
won't install. Now, 119042 won't install "due to a failure produced by pkgadd".
A look at the log file shows a claim that the pkg in question was already install,
which kills the overlying patchadd.
Has anyone encountered this or have any hints? Thanks.
PS Didn't we already decide that putting /usr/lib/sendmail in the kernal patch
was a BAD idea?

1) Not odd at all. Some patches depend on other
patches being previously installed AND operational.Hm, thought that is why they had a patch order file in the cluster. :-)
So you are suggesting that it should be standard practice to always run
install_cluster TWICE to make sure all the proper patches are installed.
Thats new for me, but if that's what it takes.

depend on what you need or what your security policy says for my lab gear i use 60 minutes. because i know how can access this. if you have gear outside in insecure space set it to a minimum or disable the console. everybody how can access your gear can break in. simple restart and boot w/o config. and you are in.
it realy depends how secure is your space and how much security you need.
and than the settings for policy have to match, what sec do you have if your console login and logout is secure. but when you restart you can simple break in by starting w/o config and than load it.

I tried deleting FireFox and reinstalling it multiple times, and a message pops up sometimes that says FireFox may not have installed correctly, so I follow the steps, but all the extra icons on my desktop don't go away. This has happened every time I have downloaded FireFox. The browser itself works, but I need to know how to get rid of these icons, but still be able to use FireFox. This is on a new computer, with Windows 7.

I think he means to set up the main extreme as the main router or "main base station", and then use the express to "extend" the network.

In resource based throttling, what's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in the resource based throttling tab of the UI) for a 64-bit host
on a 64-bit Windows OS?
According to MS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee308808(v=bts.10).aspx):
"By default, the
Process memory usage throttling threshold is set to 25. If this value is exceeded and the BizTalk process memory usage is more than 300 MB, a throttling condition may occur. On a 32-bit
server, you can increase the Process memory usage value to 50. On a 64-bit server, you can increase this value to 100. This allows for more memory consumption by the BizTalk process before throttling
occurs."
Does this mean that 100 is the recommended setting for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit Windows?

Hi Michael,
Recommended setting is the default setting which is 25 .dot.
If your situation is abnormal and you see message delivery throttling state to “4” when the following performance counters are high or if you expect any of you integration
process could have impact on following counters, then you can consider the suggestion by Microsoft. Don’t change the default setting.
High process memory
Process memory usage (MB)
Process memory usage threshold (MB)
You can see these counters under “BizTalk:MessageAgent”
You can gauge these performance counter and its maximum values if have done any regression/performance testing in your test servers. If you have seen these counters having
high values and causing throttling, then you can update the Process memory usage.
Or unexpectedly you’re process high throughput messages in production which is causing these counters to go high and cause throttling, then up can update the Process memory
usage.
The above two cases where I know my expected process usage (by doing performance testing) or suddenly my production server processing has gone high due to unexpected business
hike (or any reasons) which caused throttling, then do changes to default throttling setting.
Just changing the default setting without actual reason could have adverse effect where you end up allocating
more processing capacities but the actual message processing message usage ever is low means you end up investing in underutilised resources.

What is the recommended set up for Final Cut Pro with regards to Scratch Disk etc.
I have a lot of projects and at the moment they are all over the place on various external HDDs etc.
I just bought a new Firewire 800 External HDD and want to get everything straight but I'm not quite sure where to start...

Media Manager (available from the File menu bar item) will consolidate all elements of your project together with a linked copy of the project file to a single folder in a location of your choice. There are various options to leave out unused footage, include handles etc. Safest way is to copy the files. Delete the originals when you are sure the copy works.
The user manual has a detailed description of how MM works.

Recommended set up?

Okay. So I know I want to get some kind of set up to use for work, school, etc. I would like a laptop and a display of some sort, so does anyone have a recommendation? I'm choosing from a MPA 11, MBA 13, MBPr 13, or MBP 15 for the laptop (I'll be traveling with it a lot, so none of the original MacBook proa with the regular display). For the display, I need to choose an iMac 21 or 27, or a 27 inch Thunderbolt Display. I'm mainly using it for multitab web browsing, a lot of work on iTunes, iMovie, and Adobe Auditions since I'm a radio DJ and need to edit music. Thanks for your help! And if you included the configurations for the items when checking out, like extra flash, I would love you for the rest of my life!

Please do yourself a favor and get another brand (NOt M-Audio0 their drivers are worthless, and will cause you to commit suicide within a few days of trying to get their products to work.

As far as monitors, get the best you can within your budget. there are plenty of good brands out there, I suggest you actuallt go to a music store, and LISTEN to many different brands, before settling on ones. Remember they will still sound different in your actual room.
As far as amixer / monitoring setup, please make a list of what you expect to do day in and day out, and this will tell you what you need, as far as audio routing / mixing is concerned.

Export Media from DV Pal to AVI: Best recommended setting for Output file?

I have a project in CS4, on Windows, in DV format (original videos were M2t).
What is the optimal setting for export (and possibly for the sequence settings too) for the best quality and then smallest size?
If my input is M2T files - is the best settings to work in Premiere is DV 1 for Pal?
I always use Progressive Interlace - is that required or is the default of Lower field OK as well (I am not sure exactly what is the impact of using just one field, but from previous versions of Premiere Progressive always improved the video image)?
Is the frame rate of Pal as 25 FPS must be adhered in the sequence setting and export to avoid re-rendering?
As for the Export side:
Is using the DV Pal is best for quality without going uncompressed?
Is starting with 16GB of DV as m2T and ending with 20GB of DV reasonable?
Is the method of exporting to DV and then compressing it using a 3rd party is the best way going about the creation of the movie and then compressing it for distribution?
What is the the recommended tool for compressing - and with which format?
The end result is meant to be consumed as an AVI on people's desktop. Not on mobiles or YouTube or DVD.
On BitTorrent I see many files that are in HD but have an amazingly small size of less 1 GB - what do these guys use to achieve such small sizes yet amazing quality?
What is the best tool and codec to achieve a compression based on a file size?
Is DivX better than XVid? And is "Multipass nth pass" is the way to configure the DivX for best results?

Dual CS4 CS5 install wacom setting weirdness

I have PS CS4 (64-bit) and PS CS5 (64-bit) installed on a wintel machine running Win7. If I try to adjust the wacom (Intuos 3) settings for PS CS5 it has no effect, it will only access the settings I've put in in CS4. I'm sure someone else must've experienced this problem. How do I get CS4 and CS5 to recognize their wacom settings respectively?
I've experienced this before and I remember remedying it but I don't remember how I accomplished it, but that was on an XP rig, too...

Thanks for your help. I know I've fixed this before but I don't remember how. Figuring out how to even word my query makes it difficult to research. The problem is weird because the two photoshops are in discrete folders. It just occurred to me that possibly this is a naming issue? Perhaps, the wacom settings aren't savvy enough to differentiate two different .exe files that are named the same, even though they are in two different locations? Maybe, if I rename the CS5 .exe to PhotoshopCS5, or Photoshop2? I'll try it and see if that works.
...well, that was a bust. It must be because it's early still? Of course I couldn't just rename the .exe file, that would break all of the connections to it and make it unusable. Duh. So much for that hypothesis.

First you need to make sure your project is long enough then you can adjust the play range (in/out). To make sure the project is long enough:
1. From the project properties (command-J) go to the Duration field and enter a new duration.
2. Click on the down arrow icon to the right of the current time, there is an option to show the project duration. Once set to this you can double click the number and type in a new project duration. I'd recommend setting it back to show current time when done.
3. Of course you can also change the duration of a project when it is first created, in the project browser.
Once you're sure you have a long enough project you can adjust the in and out range. You then use the zoom controls in the bottom of the timeline to show more of the timeline and adjust the play range as needed. Best Practice: DAG and AutoDatabaseMountDial Setting

Hi,
I am working with management in my organization with regard to our DAG fail over settings. By default, the fail over setting is set to 'Good Availability' (missing 6 logs or less per
DB). My organization did not feel comfortable with data loss so we changed it to 'Lossless'.
Of course, we had a SAN failure and we lost a DAG member and nothing failed over to the surviving DAG member. Even eventID 2092 reported the same log sequence for many databases yet the
surviving DAG member did not mount. Example:
Database xxxmdb28\EX-SRV1 won't be mounted because the number of lost logs was greater than the amount specified by the AutoDatabaseMountDial.
* The log file generated before the switchover or failover was: 311894
* The log file successfully replicated to this server was: 311894
Only after the SAN was restored and the surviving server came back did another 2092 EventID get logged stating the log sequence was not 311895 (duh! - because the database got mounted again. )We opened a support
case with Microsoft and they suggested no databases mounted because the surviving DAG member could not communicate with the non-surviving member (which is crazy to me because isn't that THE POINT of the DAG??). Maybe there is always a log file
in memory (?) so AutoDatabaseMountDial set to lossless will never automatically mount any database? Who knows.
In any case, we are trying to talk ourselves back into setting it back to 'Good Availability' setting. Here is where we are at now:
     2 member DAG hosting 3000 mailboxes on about 36 databases (~18 active on each node) in same AD site (different physical buildings) w/witness server
     AutoDatabaseMountDial set to lossless
     Transport dumpster is set to 1.5x maximum message size
What level of confidence can we expect we will not have data loss with the properly configured transport dumpster and a setting of 'Good Availability?' I am also open to other suggestions such as changing
our active-active DAG to active-passive by keeping all active copies on one server.
Also, has anyone experienced any data loss with 'Good Availability' and a properly configured transport dumpster?

Personally I have not experienced loss in this scenario and have not changed this setting from "Good Availability". I know that setting the transport dumpster to 1.5x is the recommended setting. Also there is a Shadow Queue for each transport
server in your environment which verifies the message reaches the mailbox before clearing the message.
To make an example for mailflow (assuming these are multi-role for this example, it still applies to split role). you have Server1 and Server2 with an external user sending mail to a user on Server1. The message will pass through all your external
hops, etc. and then get to the transport servers. If it is delivered to Server1, the message has to be sent to Server2 and then back to Server1 to be delivered to the mailbox so that it hits the shadow queue of Server2. If the message hit Server2
first, then it would be sent to Server1 and then to the mailbox.
If either of your servers are down for a period of time, then the shadow queue will try to resend the messages again and that is why you wouldn't have any data loss.

Required setting for Locale values for Arabic db in oracle 10g

I want to create a new db in Oracle 10g for storing the arabic data.
My client machine is Arabic Windows XP.
What are the steps that i will need to follow to make the db arabic supported.

The database character set should be AL32UTF8 for Unicode support. This is a recommended setting.
As far as NLS_LANG is concerned, this strongly depends on how your client application is written (what technology, which Oracle access API). For example, for SQL*Plus, the NLS_LANG must be set to AR8MSWIN1256, as SQL*Plus does not support Unicode on Windows, only the ANSI code page. For SQL Developer, the NLS_LANG does not matter at all.
