Recommended Software

So I've installed Arch. Things are a little different than what I'm used to. Searched around the forums a little and havn't really found any threads about recommended software.  So lets start a list. So what are some recommended Text Editor, Terminal, IDE, Media Player, Archive Managers, Rippers, Converters, Video editor, Recording software, Games, Image Viewer, Image Editor, Video Capture, Desktop Search Engine, ect ect.

What are you used to?
If you are used to something like Ubuntu, you could always just install those same applications. (start by installing the entire GNOME collection)
If you are used to Windows or Mac OS, how did you find software for those? If you would go to a website that allowed you to search a collection of Windows or Mac OS software, you can pretty much do the same thing with the pacman package manager.
You can find all of the Arch packages online here: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/ Pacman (and that website) can show you a link to the home page of any software project, where you can get more information about it. It's super quick to install anything with pacman, find out you don't like it, and then uninstall it. Repeat until you find something that suites you.
If you are used to BeOS, Syllable, or MenuetOS, I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you, but you rock!
If you are coming from MSDOS, then I'm sorry, I still can't help you. And you don't rock.

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message saying my startup disc is full.  I have an Intel-based desktop with 1GB memory.  What can I safely remove?

In attempting to install recommended software updates I get a message that my startup disc is full.  I have an iMac (intel-based) with 1GB memory.  I suspect my iTunes library is using up much of the space (I have no movies installed and have already copied most of my photos to a DVD to free up space).  If I follow the instructions to move my iTunes library to an external HD (can I use a flash drive?) will I have enough working memory to plug it back in for use when I want to access the library?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Moving libraries off the boot disk while doable is not very viable.  It creates many new problems in backing up your data, as now you have more than one source to backup.    See my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
My suggestion is to get at least two copies of all your essential data in one manner or another, and get a larger boot hard drive to replace what you currently use to be able to consolidate your libraries.
As for cleaning space, see my FAQ*:

  • I am using Microsoft office 2011 for mac, publisher is not included, meanwhile I have publisher files saved from windows, is there any recommended software I can install on the mac so that I can open the files?

How can I be able to use my Windows publisher files on my Mac computer, since Microsoft office 2011 for Mac doesn't have Publisher? What's most recommended software to use for this purpose?

Just an FYI here Allan, and clinton.
Version 4.0 or newer of Libre Office can open and edit Publisher files, this is fairly new, you may not have noticed it yet,
I tested it last week for another OP, it works very well, so finally there is a Mac application that can replace Publisher.
Here's a link to the post.
VikingOSX deserves the credit for finding it.

  • New MBP-17 and recommended software

Ive just ordered a new MBP-17 (yesterday) for photographic work. This is my first mac but also have a sony-vaio. Ive ordered Aperture.
Is there any recommended software (freeware or buyware) that people can recommend so i dont have to trawl through the crap stuff thats outhere.
Doesnt have to be photographic / grahic software.
    Thanks
Mac Book Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Sony Vaio

    Check out a site: freemacware.com
They have a lot of great things.
Basically if you google search something, you can find whatever you want for mac.
Another great resource is going to www.apple.com, click on the MacOSX tab, then click downloads.
This shows you new releases of many apple products: Demos, Freeware, Shareware, and Updates.
You can also check out versiontracker.com for the latest versions of 3rd party software.
Congrats on your purchase. If you're into Video editing I would try out Final Cut Express HD, it is initially difficult to use, but very powerful once you figure it out.
    Good Luck!

  • EMET GPO Default Protects for Recommended Software conflicting with Application Configuration GPO

    Hello,
I am trying to have Excel15 launch with the -EAF mitigation removed, but also have the "Default Protections for Recommended Software" policy Enabled. This is to allow the Microsoft Power Query Ad--In to function using Excel 365 Pro Plus x64.
It seems that the "Default Protections for Recommended Software" is taking precedent over the manually configured  "Application Configuration" Enabled policy.
I have the  Application Configuration Enabled and looks like:
    - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\excel.exe -EAF
    - *\Microsoft Office\OFFICE15\EXCEL.EXE -EAF
    - *\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\excel.exe -EAF
Any help would be greatly appreciated to get Excel launching without the -EAF mitigation.
    Thanks,

if I understood correctly from talking to EMET feedback team last time, they said  App Config settings don't actually override any the default app or popular or IE protection profiles. (it really seems like App config settings override the other profiles
from the manual, hey? I thought so as well)
Sooo, it sounded like we'd need to extract the recommended or popular app list, convert it to the path + mitigation not included format for the app config GPO and then just use app config to manage it.
Needless to say it sounded surprising and laborious and not management by exception at all.
Rinse repeat for new versions of emet and XML policy files .
p.s what would be really helpful in the admin guide is some real world examples of contoso.local where they apply the recommended apps + a few exceptions for all + custom exceptions for a separate class of  machines or groups of users. hmeh.

  • Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors

    Hello Apple Community
Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors/defects/corruption?
I've been having problems with hard drive for months and it finally froze on me so I reformatted and restored from Time Machine.
Everything is fine now but I just have a feeling I will see the same problems occur because I simply restored to the exact moment from where I was having problems (i.e. Finder crashing/permissions issues/Volumes unmounting/Trash not working/Random error messages/Computer crashing when opening or saving PNG).
I read that sometime Disk Utility doesn't always pick up on a defect or corrupt hard drive.  The whole time I was having problems Disk Utility said HD was ok.
Is there software that can do a better job of scanning hard drive for errors and let me know if I need to get HD replaced?
    Thanks
    Brad

I agree with both.  Most important though is you backup your data frequently*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
That way if a problem should arise, and it is a result of the hard drive actually dying, you won't accidently kill the hard drive in the process of trying to detect errors.

If you have Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Reader) the program can perform an OCR on the document you acquired.
In the past I used ABBYY FineReader

There is no really satisfactory substitute for iDVD to burn video files from iMovie.
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.

  • Looking For Recommendation - Software/Service to Print Payroll Checks

My company is looking to replace our payroll check printing software.  The vendor no longer exists and 3rd party support is troublesome.  Can anyone recommend a good vendor, with or without online features?  We are using Oracle 11i HRMS, and don't have plans to move to a newer version any time soon.  Any suggestions, leads, or testimonials would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello!
Thank you for using MOS Communities! I will move your question to the Oracle HRMS community for targeted assistance.
    Have a great day,

  • Can anyone recommend software for converting mpeg files to FCP compatible files?

Currently working with FCP 10.1.3. Would like ability to re-edit / cut and slice mpeg files from other movie editing software (i-movie and studio 15). Would appreciate any recommendations for conversion software that I can download via the app store. Thanks

MMPEG Streamclip. Depends on what kind of MPEG, 1, 2, 4 and whether it's muxed or in VOB files or some other wacky concoction.

  • Recommend Software to Get Rid Of Duplicate Photos

    Help !!!
I now have duplicate to triplicate photos in iPhoto and Adobe Organizer & Lightroom. What software programs can you recommend that are easy, preferably free to find the dups? I anxiously await your replies. Thanks !!!

You can use my app Decloner free of charge for 30 days. It can find and delete duplicates in iPhoto. Decloner doesn't officially support Lightroom yet, but if you know where the photos are located, you can choose that folder and look for duplicates across both your iPhoto library and Lightroom pictures folder at the same time. Email me if you have any problems with Decloner.

  • Recommended Software for YouTube video download

    Hi
What is the best software out there (bang for buck), free or fee that allows you to download youtube videos easily on your mac and eventually burn to DVD or other formats/hardware? I've run into TubeSock. One of the formats is a save to "Mac" but will I in turn be able to burn it on DVD afterwards? Thanks.

    Hi Tonden,
Your recommendation was right on. Thank you! I used TubeTV to download then MPEG Streamclip to convert for play on my Mac. I'd like to take these video files and burn them to my DVD. What is the format I should covert to in Streamclip for this? Can I burn multiple video clips to DVD? Do I use iDVD for burning? I guess I'm kind of confused between iDVD and imovie HD. Thanks.

  • Recommended software for cleaning unwanted files, etc...

I am currently running the latest Yosemite(V10.10.2). My Mac Desktop and Laptop are running slow. I have never tried to run a cleaning software for either, mainly because I'm confused to which one best works, as their is so many out there claiming they are the best. Can someone, please recommend a good software that will speed up both my Macs?

[Cleaning Software] ... which one best works
NONE of them. The Mac does not accumulate filth.
They do not work, they cause problems, and some users find they need to re-install Mac OS X because "cleaners" throw away important System files.
Any slowness should be solved by looking at the root causes, and addressing them directly. Running third-party software you download will NOT improve your Mac. If such a thing were helpful, it would already be included in the box with a new Mac. (and it is not.)
Etrecheck is a reporting tool that allows the examination a lot of potential problem areas all at once. Sometimes this turns up the issues quickly and easily. Sometimes more "industrial strength" diagnostic tools are needed, such as Linc Davis scripts or System log lists.
