Recommended Video Conversion program (AVI to MPEG-4) and Settings?

I'm looking for a good AVI to MPEG-4 video converter and wondering what settings I should be using when converting? I notice that some programs have a dummified "best quality" setting but not all of them.
Also, is MPEG-4 the best quality format to use? I saw a format called h264 which seemed like it might be higher quality?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Unfortunately AVI is a container type and not a video codec, so we can't really guarantee that any particular software will work for you. You might want to give mpegstreamclip a try, or better still tell us which codecs are used in your files. See This to learn how to find this information.
Mpeg 4 is the only format that you can use, although h264, otherwise known as AVC or mpeg 4 part 10, is also a form of mpeg 4. You will be much better off using h264.

  • Video Conversion Programs

Hi all.  I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with a video conversion program called Format Factory 2.0.  It's a freeware program that converts video files from one format to another, including converting files to .flv or .swf.  My goal is to take short video clips with our Sony digital camcorder, which saves files as .MPGs, then convert them to .flv and insert them into Captivate.  I tried a couple of files and it seemed to work pretty well.
Is there another application that would work better?  I'm basically looking for something cheap - free is better.
    Thanks for any input.
    Mister C.

Never used Format Factory but used the 'Super Converter' for several conversions and it works well (though never specifically tried it to FLV though, since I have Flash for converting video to FLVs)

It's confusing to find the download link. Scroll to bottom of first page for a link somewhere, then a link toward the top of the next page, then back down to the bottom of the third....and will finally see a link for the .exe

  • Creative Vision:M, best video conversion program(freeware or softwar

I recently got a creative vision:m and love it, but i cannot figure out whether or not my recently purchased "23 Copy DVD Gold Edition" software is worth the fifty bucks i had to pay. Does anyone know of online freeware etc that works well and produces good quality video conversion (esp. from .mp4 to .avi etc.). I know there is a free converter that comes with the program but when i tried it the videos played slightly choppy on my vision:m. When i used .avi format, there was no such problem. Thanks

Problem apparently solved: Last night, I downloaded and installed the free program, SUPER. My husband has not had a problem so far; been working beautifully! Ravenquille

  • Video Conversion flv avi

I have an assignment to download and edit various YouTube clips together and this is new to me. I installed "Any Video Converter" and used it to download to HD FLV files (only other option is Mpeg4 (which I cannot import to project). The program gave me a way to convert them into AVI. The quality seems worse with AVI. Any suggestions here? What am I missing?
    Thanks

You'd get much better quality if, when you negotiated the rights to use the various video clips from their respective copyright owners, you also negotiated that they provide the footage in a less compressed, more edit-friendly format.

  • Video conversion from .avi to .mp4

Now that I am resigning to the fact that the bright decision of Apple is to only allow playing of one format, which is the best tool to convert avi and mkv files into a format the intelligent iTunes and AppleTV can work with?
Tried Handbrake. It doesn't recognize .avi files as "Source" (Command + O). Does nothing. Insists on working only with DVDs.
Tried VisualHub. This works and converts mp4 file, but that file is not recognized inside iTunes.
    Now what?

Visit and download Vuze - http://www.vuze.com/app
This will convert almost any video format into an mp4 and place the new file into your itunes library.
Very quick and painless piece of kit.

  • Is there a better free video conversion program than handbrake?

I wanna be able to make videos into the iphone format or convert .flv files to a watchable format and I usually use handbrake but lately it seems to only successfully finish converting 1 in 50 files I attempt, so is there a better, more reliable and most importantly free way to convert file types?

    No, there is not.
There are other ways to rip homemade DVD's and convert, but not an all in one universal converter.
Are you using the most current version of handbrake?
Have you gone to the handbrake forums, posted your problem with an activity log?

  • Help joining avi's, mpeg's and editing into burnable format

I have 'come over' from windows some months ago. I have a bunch of avi parts (.001, .002 etc) and some mpeg videos I want to burn onto a disk. For ex, I have about a 35 minute video in avi that was of a small town 'Christmas Truckers Parade'......What is the best (and inexpensive) program with which I can import, convert, join and burn to a dvd that I can play on a typical home DVD system?
    TIA,
    Fred

MPEG Streamclip is far more versatile than older generations and will play just about anything. If you have a slew of AVI files that are all the same size and bitrate use the batch mode and select the join files option while exporting to high bitrate H.264 MPEG-4. Use the one resulting MP4 file in Toast. Or in iMovie then use iDVD.
You can use the standard copy, paste edits with QT Pro if these files play OK in QT Pro. Learn the keyboard shortcuts and you can select all , copy and paste to the endof the last file at quite a clip.
However the MPEG-1/2 files cannot be used in QT as you lose the audio. So export those from MPEG Streamclip to the same size MP4 format.
If you can stand multiple titles on one DVD you can use the MPEG files in Toast. Converting all to one format enables you to use QT to make one long file first then use that to make a DVD.

  • Losing Audio in Video Conversion m2ts mp4

I am using a video importing device and software that creates a "m2ts" file.   I can play the created "m2ts" file perfectly using VLC.
However, neither QuickTime 7 or QuickTime 10.3 will play this file.   When I tried to use MPEG Streamclip I was presented with a pop-up suggesting I need to purchase an additional plug-in, (which I am happy to do). It suggested I go here to purchase.  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2
I tried that, but was redirected here http://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/components.html
I have no idea if the software I need is at this redirected website.
The plot thickens.   The importing software has the ability within it to convert video file to a mp4.   I tried that because I have found mp4 to be more compatible.
Unfortunately,  I lose all audio (the video is perfect) when I try MPEG Streamclip or VLC.  With QuickTime 10.3 I get perfect audio and video.  So, I drag the mp4 file into iMovie 06 (aka iMovie HD) and it begins converting into something. When the conversion is complete the audio is gone!
I have dumped many mp4 files into iMovie 06, and never had a problem until now.
    Thanks for reading, suggestions appreciated.

I thought I would report my progress.  ( I have sound now, BUT !! )
I purchased a video conversion program from the Mac App Store.   It is called “AnyVideo converter HD".  It is well reviewed.
So, I dropped in my "m2ts" file.  I set the conversion to "Computer MOV 720p HD".  "AnyVideo converter HD" converted a 1 minute video in about 15 seconds to a "mov".   The converted file had excellent picture quality and sound, it played perfectly using QuickTime.
Then the trouble started.  When I dropped this 60 second clip into iMovie 06 (set for 720p) it's conversion process took 35 minutes ?!?!   The result was flawless!  However, a two-hour video conversion would not be complete until about the time Capt. Kirk joins Starfleet.

  • Is there a way to shorten iMovie video conversion ?

baltwo - thank you for the expert advice.
I did as you instructed and the situation is better but I don't believe it's solved.
I still get 3 versions of Photoshop when I right click on a PSD.  I also get Dashcode and Textwrangler - which are the oddest associations.  All together I get 25 apps responding to "Open With" on a PSD.  And this is an improvement.
Do you think I would get even better results if I ran the same command again?
    Thanks again.

  • Appraisal Conversion Program

while trying to appraise the business event, the following error is displayed:
       Appraisal Conversion
Error in T77S0 SEMIN EVAPA or SEMIN EVAEV
can any help on this. also give some insight on "Appraisal Conversion Program"
apt inputs are appreciated and rewarded.

Have a look at OSS note 214834\
    Symptom
The conversion of the appraisals is started and the system displays error message: Error in T77S0 SEMIN EVAEV and SEMIN EVAPA
    Cause and prerequisites
As of Release 4.5B, appraisals must be converted in Training and Event Management. The report to be carried out (RHUMAPPR) must be started in each system (development system, Customizing system, production system ...). The Customizing generated by this report (appraisal model, forms of appraisal, scales, T77S0 entries) should preferably not be transported!
The error message states that the two entries of table T77S0 'SEMIN' 'EVAEV' and 'SEMIN' 'EVAPA' were transported from another system.
    Solution
Set the entries for SEMIN EVAPA and SEMIN EVAEV back to your orginal value again. Note that these values must have four digits before the conversion (for example, 0001, 0002, 9001 ...).
After the conversion, the eight-character appraisal form is then displayed in this field.
You may not be able to maintain the values because a check is being carried out on the appraisal form. In this case, use Transaction OOB1 to maintain a 'dummy' appraisal form, maintain the T77S0 values and delete the dummy appraisal form before starting the conversion again.
    Thanks,
    Puneet

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • How can I change the default video conversion applied when I copy an AVI file from my PC to my Android HTC One M8 phone?

    Here's the situation...
I have an Android HTC One M8 phone which I connect via USB cable to my PC, then I use Windows Explorer to drag and drop an AVI file from my PC onto a target folder on the phone. When I would do this after I had first purchased my phone a message box
would come up with the heading "Convert and Copy" and ask me  "Do you want to convert <filename> before it's copied to your device?" and give me the options "Yes, convert and copy (recommended)" or "No, just
copy Your file will be copied, but might not play on your device."
If I chose to convert it converted the file to MP4. No problem, that's what I wanted.
The problem I now have is that after doing some work with other video applications a while ago where I was outputting WMV files I now find that the default conversion for the above described copy from PC to Android phone now converts files to WMV.
I simply want it to go back to converting video files copied to my phone as MP4, but I can't seem to find where I can set this!
It appears that the copy/conversion process in Explorer is being handled in the "Portable Devices Shell Extension" dll - WPDSHEXT.DLL
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to set the default video conversion back to MP4 ???
    Thanks

    Thanks Rob.
I actually had no clue what the core problem was caused by. So it's Windows itself...that helps some.
I'll resubmit there. It might actually have saved time for it to simply have been moved to there instead of off-topic, though I suppose you have to follow protocol.

  • AVI Files conversion in PE - Colors are weird and video is not smooth.

    Hi,
I have an issue with AVI files. I have Sony Digital 8 Camcorder and through a different program I downloaded the tapes and made them into AVI files.
I was trying to make a movie with premiere 7 using these AVI files. The quality was poor. There is no smooth motion of the movies, it was kind of moving frame by frame and also at the end of the movie faces and surrounding colors was weird (as if they are negative etc..)
I chose the out put video quality to be high and format to be NTSC. I have a 3gig ram, Windows vista laptop.
Am I missing something in movie making setting. Can someone help
    Thx...

I have had a similar problem with sony dvd cam.Trying to read old files which were in ima format. accidentally I found the same files stored as MPEG, but Prel El 2 could pick up the files with clarity.
I have found a freeware site winff.org which converted the problematic MPEG files to DVD files with great success.

  • Video conversion software recommendations. MOV to MPG, WMV

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive video conversion software package? I'm trying to convert a QTMOV to MPG or WMV for Windows users without QT installed. Any help appreciated. I'm a recent Windows convert.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quicktime Pro ($30us) is an excellent value video tool which can handle editing, layers, transparency etc etc. It can export to a variety of formats (although not WMV for obvious reasons). I'd be tempted to wait a couple of months though as QT8 will probably be around soon and will require a new key to be bought.
Also check out these applications on MacUpdate.
