Recommended way to start a merge replication with big database

Hi all
I need to install a merge replication on 2 diferent stores with Sql 2012 server, that are connected via 2 mb vpn and the database is about 4gb. due to the fact we have 2mb for the initial sync and the database is big, What is the recommended way to do that
without using the snapshop agent step? Can I take a backup of the db and restore it in the second server and setup the merge replication ? If so, where I tell the wizards that the databases are already there and do not use the snapshop agent and just start
to replicate ?

Create the publication and snapshot. Zip up the snapshot and send it via FedEx to the subscriber. Apply the snapshot on the subscriber by pointing to the unzipped snapshot using the altSnapshotFolder parameter of the merge agent.

SQL Server Compact 3.5 Merge Replication With SQL Server 2012 - Causing IIS App Pool to Crash

Hi, I may be the only person in the world doing this but I wanted to give this information to anyone else who may follow this path in the future, and hopefully avoid a headache, or at least a paid support call to Microsoft.
My original scenario was we had a SQL Server 2008 Server using Merge Replication through and IIS (web server) to several Windows Mobile 6 devices. This has worked fairly well for a few years.
Recently we upgraded our SQL server to version 2012 SP 1. After moving the database over to the new server, and re-setting the merge replication stuff, we couldn't get merge replication to work on the Windows Mobile 6 handheld devices. The replication
would appear to start, and then we would get a message saying that the device could not get to the web site. The message on the handheld device was this:
"The IIS service is not available."
After doing some more research, we found that the start of the replication process was causing the Thread Pool that was running the SQLCESA35.dll to crash.
The SQLCESALOG.txt file had this information:
Date Time == SQLCESA Version ==> 3.5.8088.0
Date Time Hr=80004005 ERR:Couldn't find existing RSCB 1
After 2 days of trying to figure out the issue on our own, we gave in and called for paid Microsoft support. They eventually found a known issue where a cumulative update was able to fix the problem.
We installed the update on the IIS server and everything ran smoothly again.

Recommended way to start db on oracle10g asm in cluster

We have a oracle 10g asm instance running on Solaris 10 cluster. During maintenance activity, we shutdown the database using cluster but startup of the database is carried out by DBA & not thru cluster. We then start the cluster service of the database after the manual startup. Is this fine & we can continue this practise or the recommended way is to start db thru cluster?

you can enable the database to startup automatically and test it by adding the asm database in the Oracle Clusterware.

Correct way to start dynamic link project with PPro

I tried and failed to correctly initiate an After Effects project using dynamic link to a PPro project (this is the Production Premium CS5 package I'm talking about here). I could see and edit the PPro project in AE, but couldn't see the AE changes in PPro.
In CS4 and below, dynamic links were one way streets, so this behavior would be expected. Supposedly, in CS5 and above, dynamic links are two way streets, so I should be able to move back and forth between applications seemlessly. More or less. At least without having to render. Yes?
So... how do I actually do it? Darned if I can figure it out from endless days of reading the manuals and looking for tutorials to explain it.
What I'm wanting to do, in the end, is to do my edits in PPro, then move to AE to color grade and add motion graphics (like lower thirds, maybe some titles). Depending on the needs/desires of customers, I might have to re-edit and re-correct several times (iteratively). So I want to learn how to make interative editing/effects with PPro/AE work as Adobe seems to think it should -- a two way street.
How do I do that? What are the steps in PPro, and in AE, and in what order?

There are a three of ways you can do this.
1. Right click on a selected clip or group of clips and select "Replace with an After Effects Composition"
AE will open up and ask you for a name for the composition. Make sure that you put the AE project in a folder that's related to your Premiere project so that it can be found easily and so that it can be archived. Make sure that you save the composition. You will then see the composition in the Project window in PPro but it will have the default Untitled Linked Composition 01 name. You can change the name if you like but it's not necessary.
Now everything you do in AE will show up immediately in PPro. Rendering of the project will take place in PPro using the sequence settings or the Media encoder settings.
2. Go to File>Dynamic Link>New After Effects composition
If you have AE open with a current project it will add a new untitled comp to AE. You can set the comp settings to anything you like, add any footage you like, and then go back to PPro and drag the new composition to the timeline and treat it as any other footage. Once again, everything you do in AE will show up in PPro.
3. Go to File>Dynamic Link>Import After Effects composition
You will be taken to a window that will allow you to pick your .aep file in the left side and then pick the composition in the right side of the UI.
That should get you started. As long as you have the system resources to handle running both apps this is a very efficient way to work. The biggest danger is that you'll forget to save the project, exit, and loose a bunch of work.

Recommended way to design a book chapter with a set of fixed layouts?

I am starting on a book and am trying out Indesign CS6.
This is a science book, and the bulk of it uses only a couple of layout formats, typically with 3 images and some text frames at fixed positions. Each page content is independent of each other (i.e. text does not flow to the next page)
I could design the layouts (or templates) for the left and right facing pages and even set them as master pages. However, any individual page could be on the left or right facing page and the image positions are slightly different due to the gutter. Even if I override each item properly, inserting a single page at the beginning shifts all the pages from left to right and vice versa, leading to mispositioned text and images. If I had a 2-page spread master page, it would end up with duplicate objects instead. I'm trying Master Pages now because I might foresee slight adjustments to the page layout midway through the project, and don't want to reposition/resize everything over again. Ideally it should be adjustable from a single location...?
Is there an elegant way to resolve this? I am familiar with Javascript but have not dealt with it in Indesign yet, so I'm very open to using it if necessary.

Thanks Ankit. I have actually gone through several Master Page tutorials and am already overriding objects from the various Master Pages I am using.
The problem is, if I have a 2-page spread for a Master Page, inserting a page before the spread (quite common during this project) that uses the Master Page will result in duplicate objects on each page. i.e. the page will contain BOTH my overridden objects from the left side plus the master page components on the right side. It becomes a complete mess.
If I had a 1-page Master Page for a particular layout, it would only be for the left facing page, and I would face the same problem when inserting pages again.
From what I see now, Master Pages are meant for completely static components on the page and not for fixed layouts.

Way to start family share plan with 4 lines

Im extrememly new to this & right now I would like to start a family share plan with 4 lines. Will I be able to get 4 smartphones at a discounted price? I heard that you if you want 3 lines there has to be 1 basic phone along with 2 smartphones & 2 basic 2 smart for a plan of 4. I need a little confromation since it was really hard looking for info on my exact wants online. Also right now I'm already on a grandfathered family plan with a friend but I don't mind paying the ETF since the line was suspended last month & my friend won't be able to pay the bill pillage until next month(I have paid my portion of the bill for this month also even though it wasn't enough to reconnect the lines) & I can't deal with not having a phone any longer! If you are a new customer then yeah you get the phones at a discount. You would be a new customer if you were under someone else's plan I assume. Whose name was the account under?

I tried to set up a new folder but that will reside on my computer. Is it possible to configure transaction and merge replication one database as a publisher?

We have a requirement to configure replication between the servers and its plan is as fallows:
A------>B -- One way transactional replication --- Already Configured
A------> C --Merge Replication (Both ways)--- This is in plan
1) Our requirement to configure Merge replication is to allow multiple users to access both publisher and subscriber databases. Configuring Merge replication with a combination of Transactional replication is correct or do we end up facing issues?
2) A to B transactional replication is already configured so if we configure merge replication between A to C will effect existing replication?

is there any way to add article in already configured publication in merge replication with out snapshot of entire database.
as per my query it take snapshot of only newly added article not for entire db.
for example:
the distance between publisher and subscriber is 1200 km.
db size=50 gb(it's already configured in merge replication) after that as per our requirement I added one new article(size 1 gb) for that database, if I run snapshot agent it take whole db snapshot it's time consuming.
when I add one article in transaction replication it take snapshot of newly added article only. like that any way in merge replication.

No, this is not possible with Merge Replication. You must generate a full snapshot, however, only the newly added article will be synchronized with existing subscribers.

Merge Replication: subscriber database error

Hello
We have a principal application database running on SQL Server 2005, which has 300 GB information.
This database is synchronized with multiple subscribers using merge replication agent, allowing changes at both the publisher and subscribers.
Client applications connect to the subscribers and not the publisher, so the information is loaded in the subscribers.
Last week, one of the subscribers had storage level error (broken discs) that caused corruption in the file system of the server.
Then, the merge replication with this server began to fail due to bad sectors of the file system. But the database remained online, and the application continued to function normally, so new information was loaded in database.
Because disk errors, it was not possible backed up the affected database or copy databases files to save the information. Subscribers regular backups were NOT performed.
After resolving disk errors and repaired the file system, database was restored,
but had consistency errors which were repaired by the DBCC CHECKDB command with
repair_allow_data_loss option.
Comparing the number of records before and after repair, we estimates that some records were lost in the database.
Replication has not been restored yet.
Now we have the following questions:
- What happens with lost data in the subscriber database if the merge synchronization is reactivated? We estimate that the lost data will be replicated to the Publisher, and want to avoid that.
- Is there any way to sync (download) data from the Publisher to the Subscriber to load the missing records again? Avoiding of course the upload from the subscriber to the publisher.
- If the above point is possible, may you then make the upload to the publisher to sync the information loaded into the database subscriber?
- If these actions are not possible, have we another ways to sync the information, to avoid losing data in the subscriber?

You can configure the Synchronization direction in Article Property. Right-click the Publication, click Properties. In the Articles page, set the properties of the articles. See the image:

Best or proper way to Use a Mophie Helium with iPhone 5s

What would be the recommended way to use a Mophie Helium with a iPhone 5s? Use the phone battery as primary and recharge from the Mophie as needed or use the Mophie battery first and then the iPhone? The later is what Mophie shows in their ops manual but I would like to hear Apples opinion on the issue.

Based on this http://www.mophie.com/shop/iphone-5/juice-pack-helium-iphone-5, it would not appear that using the Morphie first is what is recomended. since it is essentailly a charging mechaism, frankly, that wouldn't make any sense.
BTW: this is a user-to-user forum, so Apple will not offer an opinion here.

Network Domain Migration - Merge Replication

My company was recently acquired by a different Parent company. We are currently in the process of migrating from one Domain to the new one using a Microsoft tool called ADMT. I currently have Merge replication with pull subscriptions setup. These have been
working for several years. The distributor is a SQL 2005 box and is on the old domain. I have several SQL 2005 express subscribers with Laptops and another full SQL 2005 box in another city connected over an MPLS line that is a pull subscriber as well.
Has anyone migrated a distributor to a different Domain using ADMT before and had any problems? The SQL agent does not run under a domain account, but rather a standard Windows account using pass through authentication. I would hate to lose the Replication
setup on the Distributor. I could reestablish / reinitialize each subscriber, if I had to.
Any thoughts?

Establishing a connection with a database

Hi,
can you tell me in which way I can establish a connection with a database?
I'm working on NetBeans 5.5 and I put a database called "Object List" in its databases editor. I established a connection in that editor, but I don't manage to call that database from the source program and work with it. I'd need the statements and methods to do it.

I can't tell you the exact statements because you do not share which DBMS you are using. But the classes to look into are:
DriverManager
Connection
Are you using the Derby module in Netbeans by any chance?

SQL Server upgrade with merge replication

We are planning to upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2012 and both the databases will be hosted on two different servers. SQL Server 2005 has around 25 merge publication and have around 400 laptops that subscribe to these publications. The new SQL server
2012 will also have same replication setup as the old server. The data base size on the existing server is 66 GB and takes about 1.5 hrs for initial sync up.
Due to various business constraints we can't move over to new server in a single switch. Instead we need to keep both the servers running for a month or two. During this process, we need to replicate (uni-directional) data from SQL server 2005 to SQL server
2012 on a daily basis. To achieve this we have tried the following approaches so far:
DB backup and restore from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 server - In this approach, the publications are dropped by SQL 2012 after we restore.
SQL native replication - Could not setup Transactional, Merge and Snapshot replication due SQL server constraints. Cannot setup merge replication between SQL 2005(publisher) and SQL 2012(subscriber)
Microsoft Sync framework – Sync fwk expects identify column or primary key for the sync to work but database has 76 tables without any primary key
SSIS – DB consists of 170 tables and will require significant effort to write and maintain the package to sync update and delete operations on the DB. Insert operations on the other hand are easy to support.
We are looking for different options to setup server to server replication with given constraints.

You will need to use some form of change tracking to gather the changes up and replay them on the SQL 2012 server.
You can hack into the msmerge_Contents and msmerge_tombstone to do this. It will be fairly laborious to set up, but it is doable. You can do this as a batch operation so you can run it nightly to do your syncs.
A lower tech way of doing it would be to run tablediff between the two servers and then replay the script nightly.

Is there any way changing the priviledge after starting the managed server with the other user

Hi,
is there any way to change the user privilege after i have started the managed
server with one user.....say for example ....i have started one of my Managed
server as "root" ...but after that i wanted to make this instance work under as
"inet"
how do i do this OR is it possible ????
please advise ....
