Recommended Wireless PCMCIA cards for IBM laptop w/ Airport Extreme network

Does anyone know the best performing PCMCIA card for use on an Airport Extreme wireless network?
I have an IBM R40 laptop.

RHESKE, Welcome to the discussion area!
Does the WinXP laptop have wireless capability? If so, what have you tried and what were the results?

  • Recommended 802.11n cards for PCs w/ AirPort?

For PCs, are there any recommended wireless N cards for the AirPort? I know most of the generic vendors (Linksys, etc.) recommend you use their brand of NICs as well.
As Apple doesn't have PC NICs, what brands are recommended for maximum performance?

Any wireless card should work, providing that it is "n" capable. Of course the vendors want you to buy their stuff.
The letters (b,g,n) all indicate versions of the same wireless protocol.

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

  • Linux driver for wireless PCMCIA card CD54G2

I puchased a wireless PCMCIA card - doesn't say who produced it, but is says: "Marketing name: CB54G2", so I guess it is made by MSI.
I have dual boot laptop - WinXP and Linux Suse 9.1 Professional. I have no problem using this card under WinXp, but I am looking for a Linux driver for this card. Any idea where I find it?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Download and install the driver for Realtek wireless RTL8185L from  here.
Use the Windows 7 driver. If there will be problem with the installation process then use the Compatibility mode.

  • Wireless internet card for powerbook 1400

Can anyone recommend a wireless PC card for the Powerbook 1400? (I know...an anchient machine but I want to throw it in the kitchen for looking up recipes and other light futy stuff.) I think it needs to be a PCMCIA card or something like that. Thanks.

    Richard,
You can run an 802.11b 11Mbps PC card on the 1400 with the correct wireless drivers and this is dependent on which version OS you have installed on the 1400. The card you want is the WaveLAN or Orinoco wireless PC card. And if your 1400 were running OS 9.1, you could use Apple's AirPort 1.2 software.

  • Getting Wireless PCMCIA card to work

Attempting to get a Linksys wpc54G wireless PCMCIA card to work on my 1.5Ghz G4 PB.
I verified that the card works, by plugging it into to a PC.. ( works fine)
Plugging the card into my pcmcia slot, on nothing. No lights.. nothing.
I get the PCMCIA icon on the menu bar, three options
    unknown vendor <-grayed out
    Network controller <-grayed out
    Power card off.
I read where there might be some hack that I have to do to get PCMCIA support running, but no clues after that.
    Any help is greatly appreciated...
    Larry

    Hi,
When I got my PCMCIA wireless card (not Linksys) it came with an install CD. The G4 maybe wouldn't of known what it was or what to do with it on it's own, needed the install feature.
Works fine once installed. Did you get an install CD for it from Linksys? For the Mac OSX? If not, it might pay to check their web-site for one.

  • Wireless pcmcia card runs badly in Arch but fine in Wolvix (atheros)

I've got some differences between the way my wireless pcmcia card runs on Wolvix when compared to Arch and I'd appreciate any advice on getting it to run better.
Basically on Arch it sometimes cuts out or stalls for short periods when downloading, but mostly it just does not reach the same speeds as I get when running Wolvix on the very same machine (or windows for that matter). It's fine for browsing in firefox, but for any sizable download the difference really shows. Both installations use Wifi-Radar to connect to the internet and madwifi for the drivers.
Ath5k is disabled in Arch, and does not even try to start-up in Wolvix - so it's a non-issue. I no longer have the network module loading at start-up in Arch (I'd been going through the guides for ages going over my config files and then decided to stop using as many of them as possible - and instead just let wifi-radar connect for me using pretty much the same settings as Wolvix, so that as much as possible was the same as in the Wolvix install)
The main difference seems to be that madwifi and wifiradar are both about a year out of date in Wolvix, but are the latest ones in Arch. The output of iwconfig for both installs is shown below. I've highlighted a couple of differences I spotted.
    On wolvix:-
    root@wolvix ~ # iwconfig
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    eth0      no wireless extensions.
    wifi0     no wireless extensions.
    ath0      IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:"FinniX"  Nickname:"FinniX"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.447 GHz  Access Point: 00:0D:88:ED:45:25
              Bit Rate:24 Mb/s   Tx-Power:16 dBm   Sensitivity=0/3
              Retry:off   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
              Encryption key:AB46-DF38-CDEB-89CA-23FB-67DE-47   Security mode:open
              Power Management:off
Link Quality=24/94  Signal level=-70 dBm  Noise level=-94 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:215  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0
    and on Arch:-
    [root@FinniX ~]# iwconfig
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    eth0      no wireless extensions.
    wifi0     no wireless extensions.
    ath0      IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:"FinniX"  Nickname:"FinniX"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.447 GHz  Access Point: 00:0D:88:ED:45:25
              Bit Rate:5 Mb/s   Tx-Power:16 dBm   Sensitivity=1/1
              Retry:off   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
              Encryption key:AB46-DF38-CDEB-89CA-23FB-67DE-47   Security mode:open
              Power Management:off
Link Quality=20/70  Signal level=-74 dBm  Noise level=-94 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:40  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0
There are pretty much no differences between the outputs when I give the ifconfig command or for lsmod | grep ath. inet6 is not up as default on Arch and is on Wolvix (I followed some advice I found on a post and blacklisted it on Arch to see if it helped), but running with inet6 either up or down on arch makes no difference to the speeds, I've tried both.
I'm unable to change the Sensitivity of the wireless card (says I cannot change it on this card when I try) and have no idea how to go about changing the max link quality from 70 to 94. Yet these are the only two unchanging values that are different between the wireless set-up of the two installations.
I think the next move is to replace my current version of madwifi on Arch with an older version that matches the one installed in Wolvix, so that both installations use the same drivers for the card to see if it helps. But I'd really appreciate any input on why the same card functions so much worse in Arch than it does in the slackware based Wolvix.

Thanks for the reply Zenlord I've used ndiswrapper before on another PC for a wireless USB dongle, but I never thought it'd be needed for this card since it's proven to work with madwifi in the past. But it might be worth a try anyway.
As for the card, it's a Kcorp KLG-520 pcmcia card. This is the sites spec page for it:-
    http://www.kcorplifestyle.com/products/ … LG-520.htm
Under chipset they give these two results:-
    RF: AR2112
    BB/MAC: AR5212
and in Arch I get this:-
    [root@FinniX ~]# lspci | grep Atheros
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212/AR5213 Multiprotocol MAC/baseband processor (rev 01)
I'll have a look to see if the other distro gives the same output later.
    Edit:-
    Wolvix output:-
    root@wolvix ~ # lspci | grep Atheros
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)

Yes, check out http://firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-2sm2-e/ The PowerBook wouldn't use the same one as a MacBook Pro would... different slots. But they're made for both.

  • WIRELESS NIC CARD for HP6126UK.

Hi I would like to know what WIRELESS NIC CARD for HP6126UK would be suitable, as i would like to connect to a wireless connection.

    Hi:
The easiest thing to do is to purchase an external usb wireless adapter for your PC.
That way you don't have to be concerned with what will specifically work for your PC.
All external usb adapters should work.
    Something like this:

  • How can I convert a coaxial internet feed to an ethernet for connection to an AirPort Extreme?

I'm interested in purchasing an AirPort Extreme but I'm not sure how to convert the coaxial internet cable to ethernet to connect to the airport. Does anybody know of a good converter?

If the Internet feed is provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) you will need an outboard cable modem that accepts the coaxial signal and converts it to Ethernet for use with the AirPort Extreme.
Contact your Internet Service Provider to learn what modem they recommend for use with their service.

  • Ibook G-3 with old airport card can't see New Airport Extreme Base Station

I have been trying for a week now to get my G-3 ibook set up on my Airport Extreme Network. No matter what I do, I can't sign on to the network. When I put in the password I get an error message 3151. I have no idea what this means. I have read everything, restarted base, changed network password, trashed all airport and prefs on G-3 and reinstalled. Although my network shows up in the control strip, it doesn't show in the setup assistant. Please help if you can, I'm about to go crazy! Thanks.

Dear Duane, I did have 802.11b configured, but I had the WPA instead of WEP enabled. When I reconfigured my network, the clamshell was instantly able to join and use the network. I have many many questions about how to use the network to allow both computers to communicate, but I'll read up on it and I'm sure the answers will be there. You saved me $240.00 for the 1st hour and $160.00 for anything over that Techserve was going to charge me to come and set it up. I can't thank you enough. Everyone tells me not to waste money, but to save for a new ibook with System X, but I love my old clamshell and I'm going to get it a bigger hard drive so it can be upgraded to run OS X. It's the old 4 Gb one. I can't thank you enough for your solution! Now I can work on the laptop in my bedroom! I love Mac stuff and I knew the Extreme base station would work, regardless of what all the posters have been saying.

Connect to the Airport Extreme Network
Use the Airport Assistant to configure a new base station and configure the AX to join an existing wireless network (either use client mode, only extend your network if you need to do so).
