Recompose in PE 12

I am trying to change a landscape 4x6 photo to a portrait 4x6 using compose in ps element 12 and it doesn't seem to work.

Are you selecting the 4 x 6 preset to start with?
Note though that using Recompose to convert 6 x 4 to 4 x 6 will most likely result in severe image distortion. I'd be more inclined to use the crop tool and crop to 4 x 6. You could go bigger if there are elements you want the recompose tool to get rid of during the process, but even then crop to something that is initially more portrait than landscape, before entering Recompose, for best results.
Cheers,

  • Problem with recompose in PSE 11 trial version

I am trying to determine whether to purchase PSE 11. I currently solely use Lightroom 4. I have attempted to use the recompose tool several times on several different pictures marking different things and generally have failed results. On the odd occasion that part of the photograph is saved, it is the part I have painted red. I am not saying that the problems with recompose is a deal breaker for purchasing the software, but this was one of the tools I really liked (at least the idea). Someone please enlighten me. Oh, and I am using a duplicate background when trying the recompose tool.

The green areas are protected areas. That's what gets saved if you have protected all the important features.
Take a look at this video tutorial.

  • Focus points are clustered in the center causing constant "focus & recompose"

It would be helpful is there were some outer focus points, I am constantly focusing and recomposing. Not so much an  issue when handheld but a major obstacle when on a tripod.

First point: this is just a forum hosted by Canon, they don't actually read these posts with any intent on gathering user feedback.  The forum is mostly supported by Canon users.
As your post: while ‘more’ is always better, there has to be reasonable allowance for advancement of technology.  The 1Dx and 5D3 have a significantly larger portion of coverage compared to other Canon models.  And even the lower end models are slowly increasing in coverage.  While I have no doubt that Canon limits this technology somewhat to encourage higher-end sales, they still are no doubt evolving their AF technology.  I would prefer to have more coverage across the horizon of the image to cover moving objects, as is done in the 1Dx and 5D3, than the upper and lower parts where I rarely have my subject.  If it was simply an option of having more, then sure add them in, but I’d expect that these AF systems become increasingly more complex, and thus expensive, as they increase the number of sensor points.

  • Content aware move tool and recompose do not work.

Content aware move tool and recompose do not work. Nothing happens...What can I possible do wrong?

There is not Content Aware Move or Recompose tool in Premiere Elements.
Have you tried taking this question to the Photoshop Elements forum, Dion?

  • Where is the protect/erase brush in recompose.

I followed the directions in guided mode in "recompose" to protect/remove. All I get is the little cross hair curser. Is there suppose to be a virtual "brush" like the directions speak about? I am using the supposedly "fully functional trial" version of Photoshop elements 11.

Did you adjust the brush size to see if the cross-hair turns into a circle?
Also, check that your Caps Lock is not on.

  • Re: Recompose Tool

Being new to PS Elements 9, I tried the recompose tool on my own.  It worked well and I achieved the correction in my photo.  I went to save it and noticed that the extension on the file name was changed from a .jpg to .psg  I did not know what to do and tried to change it to a .jpg extension.  When I hit SAVE, I got a strange image on my screen which replaced the amended photo that I'd worked so very hard on.  Have I lost that amended photo?  It shows up in my organizer but doesn't appear as the amended photo.  Can it be retrieved?  And what does this image mean - it looks like a torn photograph. The guide book I had been using did not mention any warnings about saving an amended photo.  I can start from scratch but would rather not.

    Hi lushkie
The process I outlined is so that you still have the psd file (with its layers) in case you want to do more work on it.  But you will also end up with a jpeg (also known as jpg) file to send or print etc.  To flatten means to flatten all the layers so that you just end up with one.  It may be that you only have one layer in the first place anyway - you can press f 11 if you want to check this and a box will pop up on the right to show you.  Pressing f 11is a toggle switch so you can hit, to hide, and again, to show.
Anyway back to flatten.  Go to layers pull down menu and it is the very bottom item.  If you have layers showing then when you flatten you will see them all condense into one.
Barbara Brundage's missing manual is great.  Have been dipping into it quite a bit in the last month.  She is very thorough.  I love Scott Kelby's book on PE11 but he does not write much on layers whereas Barbara has heaps about them.
From what I have seen in written form you have made the right choice with her book so stick with it.
Let us know how you get on.  If anything unclear come back with details.
    Good luck !

  • Using the recompose tool

What am I doing wrong? Using the recompose tool I highlight areas in green to keep and highlight areas in red for deletion but when I move the sliders everything is still in the photo. What am I missing?

If you moving the threshold slider , then I would like to tell you that moving this slider decides how much recompose you want to apply to the photo. For eg 100% value of this slider means 100% recompose while a 0%  is equal to a simple tranform of the image.
You have to drag the handle on the sides of image to apply recompose or you can also choose a preset from the preset dropdown in the option bar .

  • Can't focus/recompose with my 5D MkII

I've had my 5D MkII for about 2 1/2 years now, and a few months ago it inexplicably quit locking focus for me. Nothing happened with the camera, have been using it like always - no damage, etc. Just started realizing that when I focused on an area, then re-composed, it wasn't holding the original focus point. So I turned on the focal point setting so I could see during and after a shot where the focus had been. Any time I focus/recomposed, the focus was never on the original point of focus. It happens with all of my lenses, at any camera setting.
I've read my manual thoroughly and can't find any settings that may be causing this, so I'm really hoping it isn't a camera malfunction. Thoughts?
Also, I am no longer able to set my ISO at 100. The lowest I can set it is 100.
With both of these issues, I welcome and greatly appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, or similar experiences.

Yes, I keep wishing it's just a setting, or something I'm doing wrong, but it's looking more and more like it has to be some malfunction. Unfortunately, I can't be without my camera for as long as it would take to send it in and have it evaluated.
Maybe I'll try your idea on the factory reset, but I agree - not likely it will fix it.
As for the ISO thing, it was solved in another online Canon users forum. Turns out it was the highlight tone priority setting - apparently I had somehow inadvertently turned it to "enable" rather than "disable," and this setting doesn't allow for any ISO under 200. So at least THAT was an easy fix )

  • Elements 10 recompose problem

Hi I have an Elements 10 recompose problem. I unlock the background layer, choose the recompose tool, mark the elements I want removed red, but when I squeeze the picture together, the red marks immediately disappear and those formerly marked red elements do not disappear. Can anyone help? Thank you so much, I really need this feature, Thomas.

I'd first try resetting the Recompose Tool by clicking on the small white downturned arrow (far left just above the toolbox)
and then click on Reset Tool.
If that doen't work then resetting the pse 10 editor preferences might.
Hold down the Shift+Alt+Ctrl (Shift+Cmd+Option mac) keys just after starting the launch of the pse 10 editor.
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the photoshop elements settings file.
    Press Yes because you do.

  • Recompose, content aware move tool and move don't work

recompose, content aware move tool and move don't work. It seems that the selected area keeps jumping back to its original position. What do I miss or what is going wrong?

Well, you haven't told us what version of PSE or what platform, but does this sound relevant?
Photoshop Elements doesn't respond when you use editing tools in Mac OS X 10.10

  • Batch Recompose?

    Greetings,
    Re: PE10
When using the Process Multiple Files command I know I can convert files to any size but typically I would want to "Constrain Proportions" to keep the same aspect ratio and look of the photo. If I use the Crop\Recompose tool I can take the same photo and convert it from a 4:3 to 16:9 for use in an AVCHD movie as well. It does alter the photo of course but it still is acceptable for what I am doing and does not look stretched.
But the question is would there be a way to process multiple files converting them from 4:3 to 16:9 and not stretching them to where they looked terrible. These particular photos are currently 2832x2128 (230dpi and 1.0 pixels). Whether I can do this in Batch or not (I could download a utility to do it if PE10 doesn't) can you recommend a 16:9 size I can recompose them to so they would work well in an AVCHD movie?
    Thanks much,
    Joe..

Yes you can do it by cropping or batch processing but you will probably lose the parts of the image you don’t want to loose or humans will look too fat or too tall. I always do this myself in the video editor. Scaling frame by frame is tedious but is the only way to guarantee pleasing results. But once the hard work is done you can export to a wide variety of formats. The only alternative is to accept the black bands rather than filling the monitor/TV screen.

  • Add hyperlink recompose document

    Hi,
I receive documents from a third party company that uses specific hyphenation plug-in of their own.
I have a script that adds hyperlinks using :
         - linkDestination = myDocument.hyperlinkURLDestinations.add
         - linkSource = myDocument.hyperlinkTextSources.add
         - then myDocument.hyperlinks.add(linkSource, linkDestination, {name : hyperLinkName});
It causes the recomposition of the text with different hyphenation as I do not (and shall not) have the specific hyphenation plug-in.
Is there a way to create hyperlinks without the document being recomposed (in fact no text or style has changed, there is no need to recompose) ?
    Regards,
    Lionel
    PS : I use indesign CS5.5

Yeah, much to my dismay I saw this happen on otherwise complete documents: adding a simple XML or hyperlink markup -- which should have been fully transparent to the actual text -- suddenly made the text re-compose.
A possible solution for Lionel is to create rectangles on top of the text, and assign the hyperlinks to these instead. These rectangles could be created on a layer of their own, so they can easily be removed if the text gets edited.
A small drawback is that you can measure bottom, left, and right of text -- but not the top! However, you can sort of fake it: make the rectangle one leading amount high and move it down by about a 1/3th of its height (eyeballing result).

  • PSE 8 recompose tool

I installed PSE 8 three days ago and I used the recompose tool. I am trying to use it now and it will not work. I try to color the items that I want to save with the green color marker and it does not show up. I select the red marker for the remove and it does not show up. I have reset all tools and it still does not work. I was going to try a reinstall but when you put the disc in it will only try to uninstall.Any help will be appreiated.

I guess that I found the solution. For some reason the Bamboo Fun tablet works for everything except showing the color. I tried my regular mouse and it works fine for the color.

  • Recompose not working

I have a panoramic picture (443 mb .psd) which is a large landscape with a small car in the middle foreground. I have tried numerous times to remove the car with no success.
    I open the image
    select the recompose tool
use the red remove tool brush to paint the car
grab the middle handle and drag upwards
    the red selection mark disappears
I click the green arrow in the lower right part of the image
    the recompose status bar appears
the operation finishes and the car is still in the foreground
What am I doing wrong or what additional steps need to be taken the remove the car. I am using:
PS Elements 9 (only app open)
Dell XPS with Intel i5 CPU, 4 GB RAM
    Win7 (64bit) OS
    Thanks for any help, Bill

It depends on the photo as to whether recompose will work well or not and there are other ways to remove small objects that work better
    than recompose.
Posting a low resolution (downsized version of your image) here would help us give better instructions.
