Reconfigure iPod from mac to Windows detrimental?

Have: video iPod, G4 w/current iTunes library, new PC
Don't have: DVD burner, network for the 2 computers.
Trying to get iTunes library from G4 to PC. Would like to use iPod as hard disk, but configured to mac. Can I reconfigure iPod to Windows for the transfer or will that adversely affect iPod long-term?
With no network connection, DVD burner, or other storage (external hard disk, flash, etc.) Is the only other option to burn CD's for transfer?

1. Reformat your iPod as FAT32 with Disk Utility.
2. Move your iTunes Music folder to your iPod in the Finder (Default is Home->Music->iTunes).
3. Import your music into your PC's iTunes library (using "Add to library..." in iTunes). Make sure it's copying the music from your iPod to your PC's hard disk, which it should do by default but I'm not certain.
4. Plug your iPod back into your Mac and reformat as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Hope that works.

How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Formatting 3rd Gen ipod from Mac to Windows

    Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

Sounds like you first need to get the stuff OFF your iPod and onto a hard drive on your friends Mac first...

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

"if backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?"
Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. If you only have the songs on the iPod, and have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • Switching ipod from mac to windows

I previously used my iPod with my Mac and Powerbook. Now I have purchased a PC. My computer recognizes my iPod but none of my songs appear under my iPod. What's wrong? Any help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Nothing is wrong. As the other poster said, since your iPod was previously setup with a Mac, it is in Mac format. Your new PC will not be able to read your iPod as it is.
There are 2 possible ways to make your iPod work with your PC:
    (1) Restore the iPod using the Windows version of the iPod software updater. This will erase everything on your iPod including your previous songs but the iPod will then be readable by your PC. Note that you have to install iTunes first, and then the iPod software updater. Download them from the given links if you do not have them.
    (2) Get some special third party programs such as Xplay, which allows you to read your Mac formatted iPod directly with your PC. You can then access the songs on your iPod. The software is not free, however.
What do you want to do?

  • Ipod from mac to Window

    Hi everyone,
I have an Ipod program on a macintosh computer. Now I don't have anymore this computer I have presently a window PC. I want to format my Ipod on my new cumputer without losing all my files and songs. Is it possible.
    Thanks for your answers,

HFS Explorer should let you get access to the files on the device, after which this section from my previous post will tell you how to extract the files and get them into a usable iTunes library.
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Need Help Converting iPod from Mac to Windows

Hi, I have a 3rd Gen iPod and I just gave it to my friend who has a windows xp machine. I had a Mac OS 10.3.9 system. When he plugged the iPod into his windows, it told him that it needed to be configured to windows and that he should connect it to a power adapter. When he did this, the iPod just gave an icon resembling the plug that connects to the bottom of the iPod. Now his iPod won't turn on and when plugged into his computer, it says that there has been a malfunction and his computer does not recognize the USB device. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

That generation iPod requires a combo USB/Firewire cable. It simply won't work with USB alone. It also needs to be re-formated for Windows and that can be done within iTunes. Along with that cable, he will need the A/C power adapter.

  • Trying to reformat ipod from mac to windows but it won't even sync on the computer to do so

also i can't restore it because of this
occasionally it will show up on the screen and say something like drive needs to be repaired, then says this is successful but its not. ipod screen will say something like connected but won't show up on itunes
i think i rather naively tried to reformat and have broken it. its kind of broken by itself like sometimes it resets its own date

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Switching from Mac to Windows with no CD

Yes, I too fell in love at first sight with the nano, and will be giving my mini to my boyfriend (who got it for me in the first place). He uses PCs and Windows.
I did a search on reformatting the mini from Mac to Windows but all the answers seemed to involve installing the iPod for Windows software. I don't seem to have this anymore, and Apple helpfully doesn't provide it for download.
Sooo...how is my boyfriend to reformat my mini for PC? Will just plugging it into a machine loaded with iTunes for Windows do it?
Sorry if this is an often asked question; maybe what I should be asking is where or whether I can get the iPod for Windows software. Will whatever is provided with the nano work for the mini on a PC?

Download the latest version of iTunes and the iPod software updater onto the PC. Install iTunes, then the iPod software updater. Then run the iPod software updater, connect the mini when told, and choose to restore.

  • Changing an ipod from Mac to PC

Is it possible to reformat a classic ipod from Mac to PC? My mother has rejected my old Powerbook and wants to keep her pc(!) but her ipod is synced to the powerbook.
I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc. Can it be done? Appreciate any and all advice.
    Thanks

*I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc*
If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. You can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
*and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc*
Once you have the contents of the iPod saved to the PC you can restore it in iTunes for Windows. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Windows version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Copying files from Mac to Windows-invalid file names

Unfortunately, my boss likes Windows more than Macs, so we have puchased some new Dell computers to replace older G4 Macs.
I'm having trouble copying existing files from a Mac (OS 10.4)to the shared drive on the Windows XP computer. I'm getting an error message:
"You can't copy the item 'filename' because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk can't display." Sometimes it doesn't give a filename, it gives a similar message "Some items couldn't be copied..."
I assume the person has used some "illegal" file names such as "Meeting minutes 10/7/07" Or maybe we have too many folders inside of folders.
QUESTION: Is there a correct/better way to copy large quantites of files/folders from Mac to Windows? Or is there a program that will look at the Mac files and alert me to wrong or too long files names?
Other ideas to copy these files?
    thanks,
    Bill

You can use a freeware utility like Renamer4Mac or BatchRename'em both of which have built-in filters that will rename files for Windows compatibility.
Thank you... This sounded to me like it would fix the problem, so I downloaded both and looked at them. However, the manual/help file is very sparse, so I don't know if it will do what I want to and how it would do it.
    1. I couldn't find any option in either program to: Look at all files in selected folder, and list any invalid file names for Windows.
    2. There doesn't seem to be an option to "rename files without bad Windows characters" or "Remove invalid for Windows characters"
I just couldn't find any explanation of how it was offering to rename the files. I can't rename all files to sequential names, that would make it hard to find a file later.
    Thank you,
    Bill
