Reconnecting lost clips

I've got several events on a large external drive.  Apparently some of the clips are still on another (original source) hard drive. I know this because when I turn that drive on, the entire timeline is fine.  When I turn that original source drive off, then I get missing clip warnings.
The thing is, even with the orginal source drive off, I can click on a "missing" clip and select "reveal in finder" and it shows me where it is on the new external drive.  It's there, but FCP X doesn't recognize it or find it.
I can't find the commands for "reconnect media."  How do I get the FCP X timeline to recognize the new location of the clip?  These are finished edits, I just want to be able to erase the original drive.

There is no re-connect media feature in FCP X.
FCP X expects the clips to be right where they were.
So if you move them, (outside of FCP X) you have to move them back.
If you remove the drive they were on, you have to remount the drive.
If you rename any of the folders, you have to rename them.
If you change anything, you have to change it back.

  • Lost clips after adjusting date and time??

I just updated to iMovie 10.0.3 and adjusted a buch of events in iMovie. All of them were incorrectly placed in wrong years when viewing in "by date" format. After adjusting the date and time with the event highlighted, I come to see either all or some (a clip of two) of the event is lost. The good old "missing file" is what I get in the playback window.
I want to go on an anti-iMovie rant as this version has caused me NOTHING but headaches sence I installed it last year but it's MY fault for not having a spare iMovie 9.0 laying around so I cannot revert.
Is there any solution here besides wiping my iMovie library clean and restoring from TM?
    Thanks.
EDIT, I just looked in each event in the file system and the original media is not even there anymore but the library size hasnt changed. Wow. I don't get this at all.

There seems to be a serious bug here that has been introduced with iMovie 10.0.3, and reported by several posters.   I would recommend you report it using Apple feedback at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
There is probably a particular infrequent set of conditions that have to exist for a clip to be deleted after using the adjust time and date function, but I've seen no posts yet that have clarified this.  Any further details you have would be worth reporting - for example did you change the date/time to earlier or later?  If only some date/time changed clips have disappeared, do they have anything in common, not shared by the clips which havn't disappeared?
You could restore your library from Time machine or, if there are not many lost clips it may be simpler and quicker s to re-import (or drag and drop) the clips from a backup and correct affected projects.  (Maybe you can change their date and time before importing them).
As for the library size were the clips big enough to make a visible difference to the library total?
Have you searched for the missing clips by name?
    Geoff.

  • Reconnected sequence clips just repeat ove

    Good evening all
After losing the original media for a multi layered sequence due to a firewire drive crash I am recapturing and reconnecting the media to the sequence clips. I was experiencing some success although I am now experiencing a quirky problem.
The sequence clips of one particular layer just repeat a short and limited video with each subsequent sequence clip. The media file for the clip plays back fine as a QT and the properties of the DV/DVCPRO - NTSC file seem in order.
The media file I am trying to reconnect does post the message "one or more files did not have enough media to reconnect some clips. Some edited clip items have had their out point adjusted." during the reconnect process although this file is in its entirety and well beyond the small repeating visage.
    Any clues on this one?
    Dave Rudolph

Michael you are right about the head banging possibilities. Fortunately I did come to realize that I could superimpose the correct clip from the browser above the original timeline edits and quickly recut them using the old sequence clips in a lower track as the template. I now have a broader understanding of the reconnection process as a result. I still have now idea what the inherent problem was though.
You suggest matching the timecode. I did and do generally sync overlying angles in the timeline by dragging or sometimes slipping a clip until it matches the frame action of another. Am I missing an elegant alternative?
As for the cautions… I do use capture now as I find the timeline a much smoother and quicker way to edit out the unwanted footage (I have never actually used the logging process). Is there a standout issue with the "capture now" process? I did not have the "abort capture…" setting enabled but I do now.
    Thanks! You nailed it!

  • Reconnect offline clips

I used the tagging of PSE5 to tag my video clips (same as photos). I also used the move/copy method to store the material (avi files) offline on to DVD's. Due to a glitch in the PSE6 ability to recognize offline files from PSE5 I am bringing all my material back online to external hard drives. Everything has gone fine. I've just about filled up my first 750GB hard drive from the offline material.
My issue at this point is I have hit some DVD's that the Move option under File dropdown in PSE5 doesn't recognize the DVD's I put in. This may be a DVD cataloging issue. My computer can see the files in the DVD, so there is no problem for the computer to deal with the files. It is just that PSE5 can't see the files for restoring them to an online location. I'm looking for suggestions on alternatives to bring this material on line and still retain the tags I have for them and have PSE5 recognize they are online.
    TIA,
    Bob D

    Apple Discussion- reconnecting offline clips
    Hi Tom
I have all the media connected except the voiceover. I even find the voiceover clips and I drag them into the browser then I try to reconnect them without luck. I can manually drag one at a time from the browser to the time line to replace those off lines, so I just have to work around it. The reason why I move them around at the first place? Because I need the space in my internal drives for a new project, therefore I want to save the project (including the medias) in my external drive for future editing. Apparently, I am not smart enough to handle it.
    Thank you

  • Possible to reconnect lost data ref's?

this is an addendum to my archiving question, which I found a strange workaround for.
I have a project file which has "lost" its video and audio due to a botched "save as...with copied audio and video." I say "lost" because I actually have all the original files, just don't know what order they go inside the slideshow. Is there any way for a "lost" project file to be redirected towards the original movie files? They existed on my desktop in a folder named a certain way but now live on an external hdd. Isn't there some way to reconnect lost files?

I don't know for sure if this will work as I have never had to try it. Before you do try it, make a copy of the Keynote file just incase it ruins it somehow you can still go back to your copy.
In the Finder, right click the file and choose "Show Package Content" (if you don't have that option, see below). Then copy your "lost" video and audio files into the folder. Close the folder and try to open it and see if it works.
If you don't have the option to Show Package Content, follow these steps:
Go to the Finder and find your Keynote, select it and command i to view info
Change the extension to .zip and then click the use .zip in the dialog box that comes up
Double click the new .zip file and it will change it to a folder
Open the folder and you will see all the files that make up your Keynote File
Close the folder and add .key to the end of the name and click Add in the dialog box (this will change it back to a Keynote file)

  • Reconnecting Lost Video Files!

I am working on a research project using FCP 6.0.4 to segment a long video clip into about 600 individual sequences. Unfortunately, the drive that I was working off was recently erased, so when I open up the FCP file, the video file is offline and not present (although the original sequences and audio still remain). I understand that you can reconnect it if the file is available, but it is not. My question is as follows: If I re-do the log and capture process from the original source tapes, and in effect re-obtain the video files that I lost, can I just reconnect to these new video files?
Will these video files appear in the sequences I have edited?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    -P.

    Ok.
I am new to FCP, so would the procedure go something like this:
    -Connect mini DV camcorder.
    -Open FCP.
-Choose "batch capture" for the respective tape I am using.
    -Execute?
In doing that, will FCP essentially "fill in the gaps" to what I had lost?
I am extremely grateful of your help, thank you.
    -P.

  • Lost clip question

I was working on a project and the clip's file had become corrupted somehow and so the link between the project and the clip itself has disappeared. I found a backup of the original clip and tried to replace the "bad clip" with the "good clip" in the place that the project was directed to (deleted the old clip). I tried to reconnect the media file, because the clip was named the same, but when I open up the reconnect media menu, the area that usually tells me what files are offline is blank. There are some words there that indicate that it knows I have an offline file, but the file name doesn't appear.
I am lost. Somewhat of a novice on this stuff so any help would be great.

No. This is a new issue. I actually found a backup to the clip that the other post is referring to.
I could do what you had suggested, but the problem is that the entire project consists of one clip cut into many pieces. Therefore, if I delete the offending clip, I delete the entire project and all in and out points as well as color treatments that I worked on. Is there any other way to get the project to associate the sequence with the original clip?

  • Reconnecting sound clips

I did something a little bit stupid in the my sequence and am wondering if there is a magical little button that will help me out!
I orginally dragged clips into the timeline with the idea that I would be redoing the sound from these clips in post as it is pretty dodgy sound from the camera's mic, and then when editing, unlinked the sound from the video and deleted the sound clips.
I would however, now like to use some of that sound from the original clips and was wondering if there is a way to "reconnect" them to their video clips.
The long way would be to find the IN and OUT points for every single clip again and this is going to take forever as I took mulitple IN/OUT points from the same shot in the viewer when editing, and there would be at least a thousand to go through. Is this my ONLY option??? Bascially, i'd be editing the scene(s) together all over again
    Thanks

Put the playhead at the start of the first clip to fix
    Hit "F" to match frame
    Hit F10 to overwrite edit
Hit the down arrow to move you to the start of the next edit
    Rinse and repeat.

  • Lost clips

Several times, I have imported clips from a cd or an Imovie file into FCP 3, then quit the program only to find the clips missing when I return. When this happens, I get a Media Offline message in the timeine where my edited clip used to be, but the name of the clip is now replaced by gibberish, and the clip is nowhere to be found, not even in the original Imovie media folder that I imported from. Any suggestions?

Final cut is non-destructive. (in a sense)
It only points to media. If the media moves - then it will show up as offline.
I would never import media off of a CD. A CD is not fast enough for FC to work with. If you take the CD out, then it will obviously be offline.
Also, if you are using the same media for FC and imovie - can be pretty wierd also.
Copy all of the media that you need to work with into ONE folder. import all of that into your FC project. Trying to use media scattered across your computer (or CDs) is scary.
If you haven't had problems before - you will - and they will only get worse - until you make the effort to manage your media.
Final cut is not going to remove media out of your imovie folder. Imovie might (i don't know imovie). Or another program might have messed with it.
If you can find the media, move it all to one folder - and reconnect to the file in Final Cut. [file][reconnect media...]

  • Media Manger won't reconnect Merged Clips

I have a project that has tons of merged clips (Video synced to Audio .wav files). All is well within the project, but if I try to use Media Manager to copy media and duplicate it into a new project, it cannot reconnect the Merged Clips. Video comes through fine, but audio is missing --- getting an unknown error when trying to reconnect clips to the copied file. Any idea what might be going on here?
    Message was edited by: DM

A few other pieces of info that might help-- the clips DO have reel names (I notice lots of talk about Media Manager problems if there is no reel name). Also, if I try to Reconnect the .wav Audio file to the missing Audio in the New Project, I get a message saying there is not enough Media in the clip to Reconnect.
Also-- i'm running 6.0.2, perhaps there is a glitch in this version? I'm in the midst of a major project right now, and am extremely reluctant to upgrade until it's complete.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Reconnecting merged clips???

    Hi guys,
Had to transfer rushes from one dodgy lacie to a good one. The rushes have been merged to provide sync......but I can't seem to reconnect the merged subclipped files.....any ideas...naturally the normal clips relink okay

What does happen when you try to reconnect the media for your merged clips?

  • Reconnecting Slowed Clips.

I noticed a lot of people are having problems with multicam edits falling off sync when reconnected. I do projects with both slowed clips and multicam edits. My problem is as soon as the media goes offline and reconnected, the slowed clips fall off sync. No filters no cross dissolves.
This problem NEVER happened with 5.1.4. It started happening when we upgrading everything to 6.0.1. ITS STILL happening, and were all upgraded to 6.0.2! Even brand new project files with brand new footage. Am I doing something wrong here?? Or is it FCP 6???

Possible workaround: Can you remove the speed change before reconnecting and then reapplying after reconnecting? You can even copy and paste this attributes between clips.

  • Lost clips by "cutting"

I wanted to move clips from one project to another so i selected and cut them and went to paste them but paste was not available and now they are gone! they aren't anywhere ... what happened? can anyone help me?

If all else fails, quit iMovie, look in the Media Folder in your Project folder and you will see the original clips. If you click on them they will play. If the "uncut" version of your clip is still there duplicate it and give is a new name, or Clipxx copy might suit you.
Now relaunch iMovie and it will tell you there is an extra clip, take the option to put it on the clips frame.
You should have it now an your on your own to do the necessary.

  • Difficulty reconnecting clips from second project

    Hello,
Have recently had problems reconnecting clips I would love some help with!
Have a project comprised of about 20 sequences each with its own bin of clips. Copied 10 of these to a separate drive for a friend to help with the editing. Used Media Manager and all things seemed copied over including the appropriate media files. When he finished working on each sequence I was hoping to simply have him send me his project file and 'reconnect' his sequences and clips back to the original clips on my external drive. _ i asked him to not rename any clips and they all seem to match what they were originally. ( He has added in and out points and subclips)
Anyway some of the material reconnected but the majority did not. What can I do to fix this problem? (have tried the reconnect option with the match names option de-selected -that didn't work)
Or is this workflow not going to work? ie: Can two separate projects not reference the same media files?
Confused...and bug eyed after individually reconnecting 300+ clips ...
    Thanks!!!

Are the two of you working on identically set up Mac/FCP systems?
You should be able to make this all work.
I don't know if Media Manager caused some issues. After running the Media Manager function, did you confirm that the project (from that process), worked on your system, prior to sending it to your cohort? Did you add some identifying appendage to the original project file, which you sent to your cohort...something like 'Project 01_copy'
Let us know exactly how you utilized Media Manager.
