Reconnecting Media and Render Files

I am wondering how to reconnect files that were copied from a client's external hard drive into one of my internal ones. I am hoping to do so quickly, rather than going through one at a time, which is the only option FCP seems to allow. I am certain that there is a way. Thanks!

  • Reconnect media and render files

    Hi!
I need advice. On my G4 and four different external LaCie hard disks I have five different Final Cut Pro 4.5 projects running, i e they are finished but I would like to keep them a bit more before I throw them in the bin. OS is 10.3.9.
I thought I had control but I hadn’t. When I look around I notice that my projetcs’ different folders have been created in other places than I thought. Furthermore in some of the folders (Render folders and others) there are more than one project’s files.
I haven’t dared to do anything about it but I want clean up during this summer and so I wonder: Would it be possible to move all the render files, the captured files etc so everything is in neat order, and then open the projects in FCP and reconnect all the media files that I have moved?
I’d be happy for your views on this matter, Björn Obenius, Sweden

    Yes it's quite easy.
First you need to set up your scratch disks in FCP preferences. Where did you want to save all you renders, audio, media files, and even back up project files.
This will automatically create new folder to that location.
Next, transfer the media files to the those new folders created by FCP. The folder name Capture scratch/(projectname)/.
For the render files, you can either delete them and start fresh or transfer those to the new folder created by FCP called Render Files/(project name)/
You can condense all of these. When you go back to FCP it will ask you where the files are and you can reconnect them there.

  • Deleting Capture scratch and Render files

When and how should one go about deleting capture scratch files and render files?
seems alot of folks say to transfer them to disc.... do you have to save them?
i mean if you save the time line project (to re-edit later) and save a dvd proj, and a disc img. and even a copy of the movie/media as qt file -----why do you need to save all the cap scratch and render files???????
    please educate me.
    thanks
    tim

Whoops - only half your questions answered, so I'll try harder:
    > i mean if you save the time line project (to re-edit
    later)
It's the Media Files in the Capture Folder that are the heart of the project. If you delete those, the Timeline will contain only Offline Clips with nothing to re-connect to.
    > and save a dvd proj
Same answer as the QT Movie - only worse! The DVD version will be highly compressed and you'll lose a lot of quality if you re-edit it.
If the project is very small, you might be able to put your FCP project file and the Media Files on a Data DVD - but it will have to be VERY small. The Media Files are BIG.

  • Delete project and render files etc

Is it possible to delete a project and all render files related to the specific project?

Sure. Delete the project from the hard drive. Delete the render files from whatever location they are set to in system settings. You'll probably also want to delete the media from your capture scratch if you're finished with it.

  • Is there a way to compress media and project files into something small

I have a 2TB hard disk where all my FCP files - project files, media files and rendered files are stored.
I am not sure I will reopen those projects but still to be onthe safer side I do not want to delete them
but keep the compresed so that in case I need to open them some later time, I can open the project and do the edits.
So is there a way to compress the files and store that I can reuse in a later stage but still take less space now.

You can delete all the render files, since they can recreated when needed.
And you can also delete the optimized or proxy media, if you have any, for the same reason.
I doubt that you'd get much space back by using compression, since video files are already pretty much compressed.

  • Media Mgmt - Render Files, Original Media

    Hello,
    Running FCP X 10.1.2
I wanted to verify a few things with the community about media mgmt that the white paper really doesn't explain to well. My archiving procedure is as follows:
I import media to an Event to offload footage from camera/card. I then close FCP X, open the finder and open the library and "show package contents" and then pick the original media folder. I then copy that folder to another offsite drive I have dated by year -> folder.
Example: 2014 - Footage from Colorado.  (I do this to always store my original media outside any project I'm working on for future reference. This is ok, correct? Is there a better way?)
Second, I learned the other day that if I want to archive/backup libraries or even clean up the library,it is good practice to remove all rendered/transcoded media files. It is pretty simple from the "file" menu to do this. Question, if I just removed the rendered media, how long does it take again before FCP X background tasks starts working/rendering media again? Do I stop this somehow so I have time to backup the library? I thought this process was automated after a few seconds?
    //Cheers

The archival/media management of X leaves a lot to be desired. Combine that with the pretty terrible design of the new MPro and the reliance on Thunderbolt drives versus direct storage and one must get creative in order to keep editing. Anyway, here's what I've done over here and it works quite well:
I edit a lot of different properties here, so I create a new event for each client. Almost all of those clients are repeat customers, so I also create an "Archive Events Library" for each client. (Show1 Library, and Show1 Archive Events Library) Then I either attach a thunderbolt drive with the associated media, or create a folder on the desktop with all of my source footage for the individual projects.
Depending on what I am doing - the process changes from here. If there isn't a TON of media:
I open X, open the associated "working" library and create a new event for a new project, and open the project/timeline. Then I use finder to locate the source footage and just click & drag the media into the event I just created. This leaves the source footage in place, and doesn't transcode it into PR. You're using original footage - not optimized. Make sure the timeline specs are set to the desired end-product - and not set to autosense and adapt to the footage you drop on the timeline. Edit away, publish. Then once the project is done, move the EVENT (just drag it) to the "archive library", and close the library. Unplug the external drive and store it, or move the desktop file to your storage media. When you need it again, open the archive library, find your event, and reconnect the media. Done.
If there IS a ton of media:
Use the import tool. Still keep your media in one location. Make sure "leave files in place" is checked, but also tick "create optimized media" and/or "create proxy media". Import and do your thing. Then once you're done, follow the same archive process as above, and once you've moved the event to the events-archive, select the event, and use "file/delete generated event files" to clear out space. Your original source media is still safe and sound on your external drive - you're just deleting the proxy and optimized stuff.
The reason for the archive library is that X gets really, really slow if you have a few libraries open, or even one library with multiple projects. This way, the program stays snappy because the only libraries I have open are the library for the client I am using right then and there, and then maybe another "bits and pieces" library open with logos, music and gpx that I regularly use. I found that when I had one client library with a ton of timelines/projects contained therein, my new trashcan MacPro was slower than my old box.
The re-creation of your renders/transcodes should start within 10 seconds or so of you stopping any other work in X. This duration can be changed in preferences. As soon as you start editing or even move the mouse, the background tasks will suspend until you stop using the program and the counter starts counting down again.

  • When group-working from SAN, where is the best place to store Cache Files, the Cache Database, and render files?

I have a small post production house, and we are spinning up into editing our first series. We're all working from a SAN, and sharing projects and sequences via the Media Browser. It's working great so far, but we've been having issues (could be user error) with trying to figure out where best to store the Media Cache database, the cache files, and the preview files so when a project is moved from one machine to another, it doesn't constantly have to re-conform all of the media in the project.
We have a very large master project, as this is a documentary style show, so there are hours and hours of clips.
When I open a project on a new or different machine it has to conform EVERYTHING in the project again.
Where should I store all these conform and cache files so that new people can get started working without having a machine literally be unusable until the conform process finishes?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jon,
I have a small post production house, and we are spinning up into editing our first series. We're all working from a SAN, and sharing projects and sequences via the Media Browser.
Glad it is working for you. Just to let you know, this workflow is not officially supported so your mileage may vary based on the kind of system you're working with. There are a lot of variations to the quality of these kinds of systems. Some are turn key, some home built - so I think you understand.
It's working great so far, but we've been having issues (could be user error) with trying to figure out where best to store the Media Cache database, the cache files, and the preview files so when a project is moved from one machine to another, it doesn't constantly have to re-conform all of the media in the project.
While it's possible to have the cache files (and the database) in a central location (I only know of one place that pulls that off, and it's a very, very large place), the systems that have this data stored locally are far more reliable. You can work around all the reconfirming by avoiding moving the project data around. You really don't need to move the project around from place to place. Have one computer as the "hub" for inputting data from other workstations. Wouldn't that work?
When I open a project on a new or different machine it has to conform EVERYTHING in the project again.
Can't you just have the master project on one machine and work on shorter sequences of your doc on the other machines? When done, just import to the master machine.
Where should I store all these conform and cache files so that new people can get started working without having a machine literally be unusable until the conform process finishes?
Premiere Pro simply must have those cache files in order to work. Sorry, there's no way around this problem unless you change your workflow.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Unable to conform and render files

    I am using Premiere Pro cs4 version 4.0.0 314 (MC:160820).
I am trying to edit files that have been previously been created but when I open the files (MTS files, ai, files etc) they won't load, and when I try to render them (render effects in work area or render entire work area) it either does nothing or I get this error message:
I did a software update but this didn't do anything. I have never had this problem before and it's happening to quite a few files that I'm trying to open. When links are missing it will always ask me for 'Where is file 'Rendered - 413039-49059-696873.mpeg'? for example but this never used to be a problem. I can't even start from scratch as when I import files it is doing the same thing..
If anyone is able to help that would be much appreciated!

    Might want to read this.

  • How do I reconnect media after changing file name?

The original file name is 1001.WAV I changed it to Take1 . How do I relocate the files? I use Pluraleyes to sync all my files.
    Cheers, Greg

Change it back.  NEVER change file names in the Finder level if the media is in an FCP project.  Change it BEFORE you import it into FCP...or change the name IN FCP.  What you did was bad bad wrong wrong. Expecially since you already did things like sync it up with pluraleyes.
Change it back.  Then change the name in FCP.

  • Reconnecting render files

each time i have a crash or a hangup and go into the auto-save vault for the last saved project files (i backup every 7 minutes), the media files connect but all the renders must be done from scratch. this can take up to an hour depending on the project. Nothing has changed in my settings. Why won't the render files reconnect? I am on fcp7.  i don't remember this happening in the past before i upgraded to osx 10.8.3.  is there a fix? when i right click on reconnect media, the render files tab is always grayed out. thanks.

good question. each time i scrub the timeline with an effect using FxFactory (unrendered), I crash. Trashed preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled FxFactory. Not sure what the issue is. Have 11TB free on my capture scratch. HD has enough space, 16 gb of memory,  project settings are correct, etc. etc. Its a mystery and it happens at least 5-6 times a day. it is a real issue. i try to render all my effect immediately, but i still run into trouble.

  • Prevening Project Render file creation and backup

I would like for FCPx to not create Render files for projects unless I request it. Also, I would like to block TimeMachine form backing up those render files without having to navigate to each project and excluded the render directory.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Frank

... same for Event Transcoded Media and Render files.  I know how to prevent them from being created but don't know how to prevent them from clogging up my TimeMachine drive.
    Thanks!

  • Render files missing-after duplication and also after moving

I have to replace a drive, which is still working well, so i went ahead and tried to move libraries with all its content (Events, projects, reneder files), which doesnt exist as an option... as far as i was able to figure this out....
then i went ahead to move events, where as one in 5 was movable the others would only have copy as an option.
which strikes me as oddity already...
after this was done i compared the content of libraries between the 2 drives, and was in shock.
the render files were all missing, needless to state here, that i wil NOT re-render weeks of work again...LOL
so i went and googled this, and came to thousands of answers on how to move or copy events to a different location , but always on the same HD.
there was absolutely nothing about moving Libraries with the Events and Projects and render Files all together explained ,....  ANYWHERE!
is there anyone out there who knows how to do this, so the render files actually move over to a new HD and ,...of course,...are reconnected there propperly and usable?
manually moving these render folders will NOT reconnect them to the projects,.... just as a FYI ...
why is there no instructions in the FCPX help menu on moving " Everything "..??
but thousands of article on how to move only parts and pieces .....

using disk utility to do a clone of the old drive to a brandnew   drive... would this have done the trick?
you know the restore to destination trick....
or would have these renderd files still not connect since the drive might have a unique manufacturer id number...
yes ...the new drive would have been called the very same as the old drive...
the old drive has a clicking noice so seagate replaced it...
and i am in a challenge to move all stuff over now...to the new drive...

  • Odd Reconnecting Media Behavior

Apologies, one more question. When I use the "Reconnect Media" option in the browser to have an image or clip point to a different file, that change is not reflecting in FCP, the Viewer, Canvas and Timeline are all still showing the old file. What is odd is when I use the "Reveal In Finder" option is the image/clip is pointing to the new file. So it looks like the change of the file is applied, but it is not showing in FCP. Why would FCP show the old file, but both "Reconnect Media" and "Reveal In Finder" be pointing to the new file.
    As always, thanks!
    lance

I have actually had this happen on my system a couple of times. Since upgrading to FCP7, haven't seen it. It was an intermittent thing that I never completely diagnosed.
My solution was to rename the new file slightly (Map.pct to MapX.pct) and then drag the newly renamed file from the finder into the bin. Click on the new clip in the bin, hit command C to copy it. Then click on the clip you want to replace in the timeline, hit option V and deselect everything but content, and paste the new content in. You now have your new clip into the sequence without disturbing anything.
This is/was not a solution to the problem, but rather a way to keep the edit going.
    Good luck!

  • Disconnect/Reconnect Media (replacing low res stock)

I have a handful of stock video in a my project.  I have been using the watermarked preview files from the stock media site, and now I have my purchased non-watermarked files that I need to replace in my edit.
What is the easiest way to do this?
FCP7 I would simply swap them out by "reconnecting media" and point it to the new file and it would connect to it fine since it had the same duration.
I can't seem to figure out the best way to do it here.
    Thanks in advance!

You should be able to relink, so that the library clips point to the new files - assuming both versions have the same type of video and audio in them.
Where is the media stored? Inside the library? Or on a separate folder?
If the watermarked versions are on a folder and not inside the library (what is called "external media") you need only delete them - which will cause the clips to appear as offline (a red rectangle with a yellow warning triangle). Then just use the Relink command and point a folder containing the new versions.
If they are inside the library, then you need to basically do the same thing. The clips will be inside a folder called "Original Media" inside a folder for the event, inside the library package. The easiest way to locate them is to control-click in the browser and choose "Reveal in Finder". Then you can delete them as before - but since you'll be changing the contents of a library in the Finder, you should make a backup of the library just in case.
If you have created optimized or proxy media using the trial versions, you'll need to delete that as well (File->Delete Generated Event Files... or File->Delete Generated Library Files...)

  • Reconnecting Media FCP does not see?

I am going through lessons in the book and have copied media and project files from the hard drive. On some macs, everything seems to open fine, while on other macs, some of the media opens fine, however, some clips do not show in the Timeline, even though they appear in the Browser with a red line through them.
When I check the hard drive, the media is clearly on the hard drive.
    1. Any idea why it might be doing this?
    2. When I control click on the clip in question in the Timeline, and choose Reconnect Media, it works fine after locating the clip on the drive. Is there a way to do this for multiple clips rather than doing it one clip at a time?
    Thanks!!!!

in the Reconnect Files window, when you press Locate and get the Reconnect dialog, there should be a checkbox saying "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" ... if you enable that one it should find all other files in the same path without having to do it one by one
