Reconnecting Media to offline clips

Hi all,
I have an interesting situation with a client.  Never seen this problem/scenario before.
Here is the setup....
--> Client is logging all footage on her computer.
--> I provided her with a formatted Excel document that will allow me to import a batch list.
--> I converted her Excel logs to a txt document, then successfully imported the batch list into FCP.
--> After importing the log, FCP appears to like the log information.  Everything is in its proper column,  the clip icon (still with a red slash through it) and all of the necessary info (Clip name, Media Start and Media End, Log notes, Reel, etc) are all properly placed.  FCP Even calculates the duration of the clip for us.
The problem is, when I try to "Reconnect Media" in an effort to connect the log information in FCP to the actual clips, it is a massive fail.
What I am seeing when trying to Reconnect Media....
--For starters, I notice that all of the logging entries in the browser are checkmarked as offline.
--When I try to Reconnect Media, the RM dialog is asking me to search for the NAME of the individually logged clip, rather than the REEL.
--RM cannot successfully reconnect media.  At best, I turn off the Match Name option (Even though the REEL name is spelled perfectly in comparison to the actual video file), then manually select the clip to reconnect to.  Interestingly, upon reconnecting, FCP has renamed the REEL in the browser as "0", rather than using the actual reel name.
Any help as to how I can import the clients log files(36 pages of info) and connect them to the actual video files?
Thanks,
Matt

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • HELP How to Tell FC Media isnt offline

Can someone help me. I'm editing a music video in FinalCut Express 3.0 and when i got to work this morning i forgot to connect to the external HD before i opened my project, so my clips were "offline"
I shut FC, connected to the HD and reoppened FC but theRed Media Offline screen is the thumbnail for all of my clips in the browser and timeline . When i click to reconnect media on a clip, the online box is checked. I can make changes, render, and play my timeline, but i cant see the thumbnails either in the browser or timeline. of t when I "show audio filmstrips" the filmstrips show up, but the first one is still the Evil Red Screen.

    Try this:-
Go to the FCE Menu, select System Settings and reset the Scratch Disks. Your HD must be switched on of course.
You should then be able to reconnect your media.
In future if you forget to have the FW HD on when you open FCE simply switch on your HD. Then click on the "Reset Scratch Disks" button in the warning window and follow the instructions.

  • Cant locate offline clips after deleting unused media using Media Manager

    Hi,
I recently used Media Manager for the first time to clean up an old project of mine, and delete unused media to save some space. Having read and re-read all manuals/help I proceeded with the 'Use Existing' command in the Media Manager...and now a big portion of my files are offline.
There was no option to 'save to a location' but when I go to 'reconnect media' the pathway for these offline files is -
    Macintosh HD:private:var:tmp:folders.501:TemporaryItems
and the clips are labelled with '-2' or '-3' after their name.
Ive used spotlight and searched through my HD and lacie - and I cant find the location above at all! Im getting worried, as i need to go back into the project to make some really minor changes but cant face re-capturing material then eye-matching the shots ive used, it will take days! These clips must be floating around somewhere on the system?
    Please please help! Thank you!!

Thanks Chris - I can go back to my source material although dont know if I can batch capture ok as the source material was captured in an old version of FC Express and had been moved over to my new FCP 4 - dont know if this might cause problems...i hope not!
Regarding the backup of source material - just wondering if theres any other way to make those files smaller - it seems a waste of valuable storage space if Ive captured say an hours worth of footage but only ended up using 20 mins of it in my end sequence (for example). Is there no way to get rid of that extra 40 mins of media that ill never use again?

  • Reconnect offline clips

I used the tagging of PSE5 to tag my video clips (same as photos). I also used the move/copy method to store the material (avi files) offline on to DVD's. Due to a glitch in the PSE6 ability to recognize offline files from PSE5 I am bringing all my material back online to external hard drives. Everything has gone fine. I've just about filled up my first 750GB hard drive from the offline material.
My issue at this point is I have hit some DVD's that the Move option under File dropdown in PSE5 doesn't recognize the DVD's I put in. This may be a DVD cataloging issue. My computer can see the files in the DVD, so there is no problem for the computer to deal with the files. It is just that PSE5 can't see the files for restoring them to an online location. I'm looking for suggestions on alternatives to bring this material on line and still retain the tags I have for them and have PSE5 recognize they are online.
    TIA,
    Bob D

    Apple Discussion- reconnecting offline clips
    Hi Tom
I have all the media connected except the voiceover. I even find the voiceover clips and I drag them into the browser then I try to reconnect them without luck. I can manually drag one at a time from the browser to the time line to replace those off lines, so I just have to work around it. The reason why I move them around at the first place? Because I need the space in my internal drives for a new project, therefore I want to save the project (including the medias) in my external drive for future editing. Apparently, I am not smart enough to handle it.
    Thank you

  • Reconnect Media - Will only do one file at a time. (all files is checked)

I found one Google search that said this may be a bug... http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1047891 and it's really bothering me since I have about 500 more media files to connect.
When I select multiple files in my Project File Browser, right click, hit Reconnect Media... It opens the Reconnect Files window. Then I hit "Locate", navigate to the folder holding the files (Reconnect All files in Relative Path is checked), select the file, confirm, then hit connect... Only one file (the first one selected) reconnects.
It's worse than that for me, now the file is Connected in my Project File browser, but it still doesn't reconnect in my sequences. So now I have to go in the sequence and right click on the individual clips, and manually reconnect those as well.
At this point it take 6 plus clicks per file missing, times two because I have to reconnect these clips in the sequences as well... times 500 because that's how many offline files I have.
My lord, I've already done this to half of the project, I can't do it any more... where am I going wrong or is this a bug? If so, please tell me there is a workaround.
The file I'm working in is a feature film, so it's huge... I can't start over at this point.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

The only multiple files it will reconnect are the ones that are already connected.
I hope I figured it out but need more advice. It may be that the files that won't connect do not have a visible file extension ".mov". How can I get these files to shoe ".mov" at the end of their names without manually renaming them all?
And the reason this is happening is I was using reference files to edit a movie, now I've been given new hard drives with the final uncompressed footage but same file names for each clip... plus the new hard drives I'm using have different names.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Disconnect/Reconnect Media (replacing low res stock)

I have a handful of stock video in a my project.  I have been using the watermarked preview files from the stock media site, and now I have my purchased non-watermarked files that I need to replace in my edit.
What is the easiest way to do this?
FCP7 I would simply swap them out by "reconnecting media" and point it to the new file and it would connect to it fine since it had the same duration.
I can't seem to figure out the best way to do it here.
    Thanks in advance!

You should be able to relink, so that the library clips point to the new files - assuming both versions have the same type of video and audio in them.
Where is the media stored? Inside the library? Or on a separate folder?
If the watermarked versions are on a folder and not inside the library (what is called "external media") you need only delete them - which will cause the clips to appear as offline (a red rectangle with a yellow warning triangle). Then just use the Relink command and point a folder containing the new versions.
If they are inside the library, then you need to basically do the same thing. The clips will be inside a folder called "Original Media" inside a folder for the event, inside the library package. The easiest way to locate them is to control-click in the browser and choose "Reveal in Finder". Then you can delete them as before - but since you'll be changing the contents of a library in the Finder, you should make a backup of the library just in case.
If you have created optimized or proxy media using the trial versions, you'll need to delete that as well (File->Delete Generated Event Files... or File->Delete Generated Library Files...)

  • Strange Reconnect Media Problem

I recently moved my computer to a new residence and had to disconnect my external media drives from my computer. When I started up FCP yesterday, I found, not surprisingly, that all my clips were disconnected from their media files. So, I proceeded to try to reconnect them. Just as a test, I selected one video clip file in my browser and hit reconnect media. But when I did this, the only "file" that showed up in the list was the character ". Just the quotation mark. So, I am unable to reconnect " to any file, because I have no file named ". The strange thing about this is that if I close this project (which is a close copy of another project) and open the original project, all my files show as connected to their media. For a variety of reasons, I don't want to use the original project file. I want to use the copy. Any ideas why this project (which I've used for 6 months with no problems) is suddenly not connecting to the media but instead is giving me quotation marks?
    Thanks!

I echo the posters above. This is a major bummer Apple! How is this fixed? In my scenario, I started a project on my raid, had to pull in clips from a network drive , which ended up becoming offline. When it was placed online again, the clips had to be reconnected, and instead of there being clip names for these in the reconnect media window, there is only " any attempts to get around this either by selecting multiple clip names or single ones are met with "
Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

  • Reconnect Media - Unable to Reconnect All Files in Relative Path

I have a project that I have restored from a DLT backup. The project file and the all the media are now on a SAN which I access from my G5. Since this project originated on a different editor's computer all of the clips in my project are ostensibly offline within my project. All of the media files are located in a single capture scratch folder on the SAN with the same filenames and reel numbers. As such, I figured that when I used "Reconnect Media" with "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" checked, all of the files would automatically relink. However, everytime I attempt to do this, the only file that is reconnected is the original file which I manually selected to establish the file path to the rest of my media. If I use the "Search" functionality and instruct FCP to search the capture scratch folder one file at a time, without fail, it will automatically find the media and reconnect it. Yet, I cannot seem to batch reonnect, as it were.
My question is this: If all of the media files are located in the same capture scratch folder (i.e. same relative path), why won't FCP automatically reconnect all the files in that folder to the corresponding offline clips?
I have attempted to reconnect the media on two different machines. The same issue arose on both machines. This leads me to believe that the problem may be a result of some issue with the filesystem on the SAN. Also, I have run FCP rescue and attempted a reconnect with both a clean backup and entirely new preference files, to no avail.

    Hi Nat,
I don't have a direct solution, and you might you've been doing this already. Although you didn't describe this. I think that what I would try to do is:
    - Copy the project (backup).
    - Open the project, and when it tells you that 132 clips and 714 render-files are offline, I'd select the checkboxes in order to 'Forget' the files.
    - Hit OK.
    - FCP 'forgot' all the links to the original files. So you forced errors from that perspective by doing this.
    - Try to reconnect again.
    Just a thought...
    All the best
    Rienk
PS What version FCP are you running?

  • Reconnecting Media

I'm having a confusing issue with reconnecting media. I just moved a lot of my media from the desktop to an external hard drive. Now when I open a project, I get message: "385 files offline", but it only lists about 20 files for me to reconnect. Then when I go into the timeline, various clips read "Media offline" and yet these clips still play when the playhead goes over them. What's going on?

Last part of your question first: you are looking at the render files, not the source material.
What you should have done: Use the Media Manager to copy your project(s) to the new location. This consolidates each projects media into a single folder and generates a project file that references the new location.
In the long run, it might be simpler to copy the material back to the Desktop (yikes!) and redo everything with Media Manager. I think it is pretty much self-explanatory, but there's a dedicated section in the user manual if you need help with it.
Test the Media Managed project thoroughly before trashing the original.
    "385 files offline"
Maybe you have 385 individual clips that are smaller parts of 20 or so larger clips. There are several possibilities here.

  • Reconnect media dialogue not working properly after advanced pulldown rem..

i'm running a macpro with the latest version of FCP (5.1.4) and tiger (10.4.9)
i have a project where some of the footage is 24Pa, but was captured as regular 29.97 ntsc footage. because it's 24pa it's creating some interesting banding when i try to export out with out removing the pulldown. in an attempt to remedy this problem i decided to remove the pulldown and export everything as a 23.98 file (it's going on the web)
I selected all the clips that needed to have the pulldown removed and used the "remove advanced pulldown" from the tools menu. fcp went through and processed everything as it should, but when it finished it only reconnected a couple of the clips, leaving the rest offline.
I then selected the offline clips to manually reconnect them, and the reconnect dialogue opens, it lets me choose the files, but it doesn't show the file in the bottom half of the window, but it will continue to let me choose the next file down, the problem is when i hit the end of the list of files to reconnect, it still shows all the files in the top, and none in the bottome, but the "skip" "locate" and "search" button are no longer available and the "connect" button at the bottom is also not available.
i've checked the processed files with quicktime and they all read as 23.98 files now.
I made a copy of all the media files beforehand, so i have all the raw captures as 29.97 clips just as a forethought.
any ideas as to what the issues are? and why the reconnect dialogue is acting so strangely?
    2.66 macPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2gb ram fcp 5.1.4

This shouldn't work. What the proper way of doing things is to capture, reverse telecine, THEN import into FCP and begin editing. You cannot, AFAIK, edit, then reverse telecine and have it connect. This is because all the original clips are linked to 29.97 media, and you are trying to connect them to 23.98 media...and it doesn't want to because the frame rates differ.
Remove pulldown BEFORE you edit, not after.

  • Trying to reconnect media...Some attributes do not match..

    Using FCP 7
    Hey all,
I'm trying to do some color grading for a friend.  She gave me the raw video files and the fcp project files on a hard drive.  When I opened the project file, all the media was offline, so I assumed I needed to reconnect them.  However, when I find the clips and try to reconnect it says:
"Some attributes of one or more of the files you have chosen do not match the original.  This may cause problems within the sequences that are dependent on them.  The attributes that differed are as follows:
    -Rate
    -Reel
Would you like to try to connect them again?"
Is this a big deal?  What exactly are "Rate" and "Reel" referring to?
And how do I fix this, or do I even need to worry about it?
Just for clarification, all I'm doing is bringing it into final cut so I can send to color and color grade what she has edited together.
    Any help would be wondreful

It looks like you are using legacy FCP. This is the FCP X forum. You'll probably get more adequate answers in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • ??? can BRIDGE helps PREMIERE reconnect media ???

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3 (also have Bridge). I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media.
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if BRIDGE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone got any idea how to use Bridge in this case ?
    Thank you.

Nope. Just like Premiere, AE will interpret your offline files as the proper sources and require you to reconnect each of them manually. Even using proxies would have no benefits here as it does not update the timelien structure. I'm wondering, though, since you both use Premiere, can't you just export an EDL or AAF and then re-import? I rarely use Premiere, but seems exactly what you would want to do. Would be simple on Avid systems...

  • Reconnect media attribute change

I am trying to revise a project and have moved the media from my MacBook Pro to an external drive. When I try to reconnect the media I gat an error saying "Some or more of the files you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original".
The attributes in question are the reel and rate. I have not changed anything, just moved them.
    Any ideas?

so, what you're saying is that you duplicated the contents of the capture scratch, from Disk A to Disk B
thats fine of course, but unless you've instructed to your FCP project to use the duplicate copy as the media source, then your project will still stay media is offline if you don't mount Disk A, because it doesn't know anything about Disk B ...
then again, you seem to be suggesting that Reconnect Media... is not letting you redirect the offline clips (on Disk A) to the new copies (on DIsk B) ?
the procedure that ought to work is:
in the Browser window, select all the offline clips, then choose File > Reconnect Media...
in the subsequent "Reconnect Files" window, click "Locate" and navigate the "Reconnect" browser to the new clip location on Disk B.
when you've selected the new copy of the clip, make sure the "Reconnect All Files in Relative Path" checkbox is ticked and then click the "Choose" button.
that should take you back to the Reconnect Files window, and the list of files in the upper pane should now have moved to thelower pane ... click "Connect" and you should be done.

  • Reconnect media links lost

"Media Offline" message appears spontaneously in my timeline on several frames (@15 in 54 min video). The media file there on my external HD where it's always been. I can find it. When I go to reconnect, the message in Search is: " is missing. This is new! Somehow it doesn't see or know the file name although it is on the frame (such as "scan003"). What is going on? It has been doing this for about three weeks and getting worse and at first it did recognize the file and I was able to reconnect the link by hand, but even then it would lose the connection the next time I opened the program or spontaneously-probably with autosave. FCP5, Dual G4, 10.4.5 Seemed to start with the OSX automatic update from Apple and got especially bad with the last one this week. That's about when the "is missing message began to show up.

i have exactly the same problem. On one of our 3 systems projects seem to gradually be becoming infected with this problem, and i think it makes it impossible to reconnect media once it has forgotten the clip names.
i have tried trashing preferences and still seems to be happening.
another person has this problem here: http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newreadpost.cgi?forumid=8&postid=885666
But in my case it is happening with entire sequences. When trying to reconnect the "Files to reconnect" window simply says:
    Offline Files:
    " is missing.
    and nothing else.
We had a G-RAID drive self destruct recently and perhaps this has caused some corruption somewhere, but this is a new project with sequences copied in from systems that were fine.
